Creative musings in bright colors

Next time I want to do a splatter mani, I just need to remind myself not to. This took over an hour, due entirely to my inability to get the polish out of the darn straw (is there a better way? Ugh), and then clean-up. Yes, I taped my nails. Yes, I had saran wrap down. Doesn’t matter…the whole bathroom sink was a mess! And my other hand. I should have worn a glove. Ugh.

That being said, the end result isn’t terrible. I just know how much effort went into what is honestly a mediocre manicure. I need a better way to do this!

– Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
– White: Wet n’ Wild – French White Creme
– Pink: Sinful Colors – Pink Forever

On the plus side, I got to test my newest matte top coat, Big Matte by Sally Hansen. Although it doesn’t mattify as much as my trusted (and defunct) Matt-ly In Love by Hard Candy, it does do a better job than the NYC polish I bought two weeks ago. The polish still appears to have some depth, but since I can’t find anything better (Revlon looks the same when I tested it in the store, and essie was nowhere to be found), I think it will have to do! It does take quite a bit longer to dry (10 minutes as opposed to 2).

  1. Hi! Reasons to not give up practicing your splatter technique: – Because an homage to Dexter’s blood splatter expert is just cool. – Because an homage to Jackson Pollock is just cool. – Because skittles plus metallic polish is unexpectedly beautiful. – This happens to be the most beautiful splatter I’ve ever seen. You can see in the comments that I drilled Vicky about every last detail. She had tons of patience with me. 🙂 – Because sometimes “splatter” is going to be the prompt in a challenge you’ve entered and you’ll be happy because you’ve been practicing.

I like your color combination. I admit I’m a gloss lover instead of matte but you’ve put matter to good effect here! Take care, Delphi

    • oh my god i need to look at the links and not lose hope :-p. thanks!

      • I hope you do get inspired by those splatter manis and try, try again. You have so much freakin’ talent. It doesn’t make sense you wouldn’t be able to do a splatter you’re happy with sooner or later. I just read a blog post the other day from someone who had been trying watermarbles for years without success except on one nail here or there. She said she tried again with different polishes she’d never used before and it worked. Then she tried again with more different polishes. Hit the jackpot again. Again and again. She said now she’s obsessed with watermarbles and doesn’t want to do anything else. Please do read through the comments for the splatter at I was such a pain. I asked her the diameter of the straw and how far away she blew from! She was so kind, she answered those questions plus even volunteered how much polish she loaded in the straw and how she attempted to cut down on the cleanup needed after. You will rock splatter nails before long!

      • SO USEFUL. Will do.

  2. I really like your colour combination and how you did gradients with 2 colours and the splatter with the third!

  7. Well, I can’t imagine why you’d consider this mani a fail. It’s the first time in a long time I’ve popped onto a splatter mani page and said “Ooooh! That’s awesome!” Don’t give up, you’re much better at this than you think you are. 🙂

  8. this is a great colour combination and beautifully splattered too

  9. such a cool mani. I hope you don’t stop as I would love to see more
