Creative musings in bright colors

The title of this post is inspired 100% by the polishes in this manicure, because calling something “gradient and zig-zags” just wasn’t cutting it. Introducing Carnival, an orange-gold crystalchrome by Mentality.

Carnival is part of the newest collection by Mentality called “crystalchromes.” These polishes are like nothing I’ve ever seen (and I own my fair share of polishes). They are a “ceramic/glass hybrid” and apparently the pigment is very expensive. They are NOT like the ILNP metallic flakies…if anything I’d say these are midway between those (which hold their color no matter what base they are over) and normal flakies (which change color dramatically depending on the base they are over). Crystalchromes have a unique color that they keep, but they also vary a bit over different bases!

Carnival is predominately a copperish-gold color, shifting red-gold-green at different angles. And I kinda love it. Shown here is ONE coat over dark blue (with a gradient made using the polish brush). The polish is slightly thick, but in a way that makes it easy to control rather than impossible to use, and one coat gets you excellent coverage.

I went ahead and layered on three coats, which made the polish opaque (you can’t see the blue base anymore!). At three coats the nail is a bit thick, but defiantly workable. I added zig-zag vinyls (from KBShimmer) after top coat, and painted over with a matte blue. This mani is fairly simple, but packs a pretty awesome punch!

The kick is that Carnival is EXPENSIVE. This polish sells for $20.75, which I admit is a hefty tag. However, it is a REALLY cool polish. There are 5 colors in this collection which I’ll be showing you guys over the next week or so…my advice is wait until you’ve seen all of them (or go look on one of the other blogs that swatches for Mentality) and pick one and just TRY it. Because this finish is really cool and is worth playing with!

In case you were curious, the creative minds behind Mentality had this to say about the cost “I believe that a direct correlation can be made to the larger fashion world. A hand-stitched Chanel Haute Coture dress will set you back thousands, while the rest of us live in the real world and happily make Target purchases. These polishes are the equivalent of a Louis Vuitton Wallet in your hand held out smartly while walking in the door to Saks Fifth Avenue. I hope that when you wear those polishes, that you feel special.” I just found that a really neat correlation! I am not into fashion (other than nail fashion) and I don’t really own high-end polish. I’ve sampled a few from friends/my sister, and usually, I don’t think they’re worth it (for things like creme finishes or jellies or even shimmers) because you can get the same darn result from a polish that is $10 or less. Here, I think Mentality might have a point…this collection is really really unique.

Sorry for the random rant, back to nail polish! You can pick up Carnival at the Mentality Shop. I believe this polish is in somewhat limited supply, so if you do want a crystalchrome you might not want to wait until Christmas to order it!
