Day Challenge 2015: Review

Hi all! It’s a Friday and I want to start my one-week-of-nail-fails on a Monday (which is to say next week you get to see all the manis that didn’t make it into the 31 day challenge). So, I decided to do a nail art review, which is to say just go through all the manis I did in the last 31 days. And be glad its DONE!

This is rather bittersweet for me…I know I will be back working in the hospital by July of next year, so this is likely my last 31 day challenge (maybe I’ll be back for 2017 but I really have no idea). I tried to do my best as I went through, there are a few days that I’m not 100% happy with, but overall I think this was pretty awesome!

My only other bit of frustration is that most of the girls who participated through instagram didn’t post their photos to the inlinkz, so I couldn’t easy see their manis, as I don’t have instagram! And some of them were stunning 😦

Without further ado, 31 days of nail art…

….oh wow. Which was your favorite??? Everyone seemed to go for the Dalek nails from half-moon day, but I prefer the Avengers from supernatural and The Hungry Caterpillar from book day!

Confetti

Today’s prompt was “inspired by nails you love” so I went with something I had been meaning to try, an awesome cut-out mani by Manicurator.

IMG_7758

My nail beds are still bit wonky, so instead of doing a slightly shimmer over nude nails, I started with a yellowish-nude holo base and placed cut up pieces of creme polish over it.

IMG_7760

Realistically, I should have cut my creme polishes into thinner and tinier pieces! Oops. I made them by painting my stamper with polish, removing it when it was dry, and then cutting the polish into strips and shapes.

Colors
~ Nude holo: SV – Gilded Lemon Drops
~ Pink: Sinful Colors – Pink Forever
~ Coral: L’oreal – Orange You Jealous?
~ Orange: Wet n’ Wild – Sunny Side Up

~ Green: Essie – The More The Merrier
~ Blue: Zoya – Rocky
~ Purple: L’oreal – Royalty Reinvented
~ White/blue glitter: WOW – #317
~ Pink glitter: Paint Shop Polish – Caroline

IMG_7791

They key to this mani really is the glitter topper…the whole thing looked a little odd without the teal, white, and pink glitter! To be fair, I added the pink glitter piece-by-piece because the base for that polish has now been stained pink (not to mention is very thick).

LAST DAY OF THE CHALLENGE! I can’t believe I actually kept up with this! I’ll be posting a review of all the manis I did tomorrow, and regular posts will resume next Monday. Next week will probably be a week of fails from this challenge (although I only really have 3 of them). Enjoy!! And thanks for sticking with me 😀

Muted Water Whisps

My tutorial from last year might be one of my favorite manis ever. I couldn’t think of anything to top it, so I decided to somewhat re-do a mani I did a few months ago, that a reader asked me to make a tutorial for. Voila!

IMG_0173

My last mani using non-marbled water involved bright colors. Since it is officially fall, this time I went with more muted darker tones, although I kept the rhinestone bright!

IMG_0174

IMG_7705

Colors
~ Nude: Zoya – Charlotte
~ Green: Zoya – Shawn
~ Pink: Zoya – Ciara
~ Blue: Zoya – Ling
~ Purple: Zoya – Monica

IMG_7748

I used all zoya polishes because I know that zoya cremes marble well together. I did in fact test that before I started my mani, because you should ALWAYS make sure your polishes marble before you start!

31dc2015-prompts-3

And now for the tutorial!
1) After using a base coat of your choice, paint your nails white, or the lightest color you are marbling with. White will make your colors pop more, while using your lightest marble colors will tinge everything that color. If I am doing a gradient within one color (for example, all pinks) I tend to paint my base color the lightest pink. If I am using a collection of different colors, especially brights, I will use white as my base. In this case, I used my lightest color (a nude) because I wanted a more somber manicure. Add top coat and let it dry.

IMG_7664
2) Coat your fingers with some type of liquid latex (I’m using KBShimmer) or tape. Honestly, tape is faster, easier, and less wasteful…but I thoroughly enjoy peeling off liquid latex so I used that. Regardless of your preference, make sure your fingers are covered so when you dip and remove your nails you don’t spend 2 hours cleaning polish off your fingers!

IMG_7685
3) Marble your water. I used two techniques for this mani:
3a. Simple water drops. Drop the polish sequentially into your water cup. Do not drag anything through the polish, just let it spread. This will create a pattern like you see on my pinky and pointer nails, a cool spreading half-moon appearance. When the polish is sufficiently spread, pick your favorite part and dip your nails! Use a q-tip or cleanup brush to pull the unused polish out from your marbling cup, and then remove your nails from the water. shake your hand to remove excess water stuck to your nail, and remove the tape/latex from your finger. Repeat!

IMG_7680
3b. Do the same as 3a except use a toothpick or thin brush to drag some of the pattern in the water outwards, creating a starbust. I wanted the nude at the base of my nail on all nails, so I dragged outwards from the nude polish so it spread nicely.

IMG_7694
4) Clean up any polish that got onto your fingers from the marbling.

IMG_7697
5) Add top coat and a gemstone. Ta-da!

IMG_7723

Notes for water marbling:
– Room temperature water is best. I find I have the best spreading if I leave my water cup out overnight before I use it. If your polish isn’t spreading well, use warmer water, or move your toothpick/marbling tool around the edge of the cup (where there isn’t polish) and you will see the polish clumped in the center of the cup spread out. Make sure you have 3-5 drips already in the cup before you try this, or it will dry out too much!
– If you end up with bubbles trapped between your base polish and the marbled polish, use a q-tip to dry them gently. You might need to go back by hand and add polish to cover up the gap caused by the bubble.
– Be careful when you remove your nail from the water; any residual polish in the cup (or hanging off your nail onto your cuticle if you haven’t pushed your finger all the way into the water) can pull back and get stuck onto your beautiful design! Make sure the water is CLEAR before you pull your nail out.
– In my experience, cremes/jellies marble very nicely, shimmers make a mess and do not end up being particularly opaque, and glitters simply don’t work. Metallics are hit-or-miss. Good luck!

Avengers

I was wracking my brain for thoughts of what to do for the “supernatural” theme. Unicorn? Pegasus? Dragons! And then it came to me…superheros! So I started browsing the internet, and came upon the truly fantastic mani by The Nailasaurus and just went with it! I happened to cut my nails fairly short right before doing this, so getting inspiration from the queen of short nail art was perfect!

IMG_0170

I am actually impressed with myself. Interestingly enough, the hardest nail was the Captain America one…drawing stars on nails is freaking difficult!! Second hardest was the SHIELD logo (no surprises there). Black Widow and Thor were downright easy 😀

IMG_7679

In case you are unfamiliar with the Avengers movies (which please go watch them, they are actually really awesome. Except Thor 2, which was rather pathetic), I will go through each nail/character! From pinky to thumb we have the Black Widow (the only female in the Avengers and a total badass), Captain America, SHIELD (aka one-eyed Samuel L Jackson), Iron Man, and Thor.

I don’t even like the gold I used here, it is super yellow-toned, but it totally worked as an Iron Man faceplate! Win. I am thinking of making a whole separate page for nerdy nail art…then again, I am also thinking of completely changing the look of the blog. We’ll see if either idea goes anywhere! Hope you enjoyed 🙂

IMG_7666

…I also somehow forgot that today was my 3-year-blogging-anniversary. Wow. I guess I’ll be having a giveaway after the 31 Day Challenge ends!

31dc2015-prompts-3

Pride

Today’s challenge theme was “flag” and I really couldn’t think of anything more appropriate than the gay pride flag. I’m not the type of person to put a rainbow haze over my profile picture on Facebook, but I will show my support for the Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality through art!

IMG_0132

So, here is my support flag! Also rainbows. This was totally free-handed, thus I can somewhat safely say that I can pull off straight lines at this point 🙂

Hope you enjoyed! Happy rainbows 🙂

Comic Book Nails

Today’s prompt was “artwork.” I spent a long time thinking about famous art I could re-create…but nothing struck me. I decided to look through my stamping plates, and realized that the 2014 Create Your Own Bundle Monster set had a whole nerdy plate with comic-book-like patterns! And comic books are totally art…

IMG_7596

This mani had really high hopes and fell just a tiny bit short. I started with a nude base. I meant to stamp my patterns in red, but I already had my black stamping polish out and I COMPLETELY FORGOT and just grabbed the black! So then I had black-on-nude which is boring. So, I just went for it and stamped the red OVER the black and it looked awesome! But comic books have yellow and blue and all these other colors too, so I grabbed a yellow and added some random dots. So far so good.

IMG_7575

However, these are on my right hand. It was time to add the words within the exploding bubbles on my pinky, middle, and pointer fingers…but I am not good at tiny words at the best of times, and this was NOT the best of times. So I tried to write POW, BAM, and ZAP on my nails. It mostly didn’t work.

Colors
~ Nude: Zoya – Chantal
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ Red: OPI – All I Want For Christmas (is OPI)
~ Yellow: WOW – #301
~ Stamp: Bundle Monster – 601

IMG_0143

Despite that, I like the idea of these nails so I’m posting them anyway! So, comic book nails. And double stamping which totally worked. Enjoy!

31dc2015-prompts-3

Fall Foliage

Today’s challenge was “pattern” and I seriously considered normal patterns (dots, cross-hatches, checks) and decided that a leaf pattern was TOTALLY a pattern so I did this instead! It’s even season-appropriate given that Fall just started 😀

IMG_0119

The stamp I used here was sent to me from Lady Queen Beauty to review. The plate has 4 large patterns on it, and one small pattern in the middle. I’m fairly certain the theme is “ravenclaw” (as in the Harry Potter house) but I’m hard pressed to see how waves, leaves, and two different plaid-like patterns are ravenclaw! There is the house crest in the middle, but who knows. Regardless, I like this plate!

IMG_7456

The plate is deeply etched, easy to use, and transfers well. As you can see, the leaf design (and all the others) are large enough to make a unique design on each nail. Also, I really really hate hand-drawing leaves, so I am glad to have something like this!

IMG_7485

Colors
~ Yellow: Revlon – Electric
~ Orange: Zoya – Thandie
~ Red: City Colors – Red
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black

Hope you enjoyed! The 31 Day Challenge is almost over…as always, I’m going to miss it but NOT miss painting my nails this frequently! Yikes!

IMG_0123

If you want to buy this stamping plate, you can check it out at Lady Beauty Queen. They are also having a 99 cent sale for a lot of their stamping plates! Remember to use my code BPLC15 to get 15% off your order!

Asian Floral: Alexander McQueen

I don’t follow fashion, but there are a few designers I’ve heard of who I love. Ok, mostly just Alexander McQueen. Because he makes dresses with WINGS. Which is awesome, but I didn’t want to do butterfly nails AGAIN, so I found a different dress by him and painted that instead!

IMG_0113

The inspiration for this mani can be found here, and it is stunning! Black and nude, with gold and red flowers and feathers at the end. I initially planned to add black accents and chevrons, but I liked this how it was so I decided not to mess with it!

IMG_0107

Colors
~ Nude: Zoya – Chantal
~ Gold: Revlon – Hypnotize
~ Red: Maybelline – Forever Festive

IMG_7417

the only nail where you can actually SEE the nude is my accent nail, but oh well! Let’s be honest, colors >> nudes 😀

IMG_7395

Hope you enjoyed! Also, I have another confession…I messed up the original mani for today as well! I think the week after the 31 Day Challenge ends I’m going to post a week of failed challenge manis…aka you get a full week of what I consider bad nail art! *head desk*

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Book day! I love books, but since I am a sci-fi and fantasy nut, it is hard to paint the books that I enjoy reading. While looking for something fun to do, I stumbled on this nail art by truebluemeandyou and decided to run with it!

IMG_0025

The version of the caterpillar I chose to use is based more closely on the art from the children’s book, specifically from some clipart I found here. There are four colors of green/teal on the caterpillar, and I went with the leaf (rather than the butterfly) on my thumb because this mani was taking too long! Tip: If you want to do something like this, you need to alternate nails because trying to put a dollop of wet polish on top of an already wet dollop just messes everything up! Translation: I had to re-do my pinky twice before I learned to slow down.

IMG_7275

He’s so cute! I actually can’t remember the last time I read this book, but the picture was enough for me to tell what it was, so I figured it would work for my “book” day in the 31 Day Challenge.

I think that does it! I had to stop myself from using even MORE shades of green, but I think that would have been completely overwhelming. So 4 shades and we’re good! Hope you enjoyed 😀

31dc2015-prompts-3

Pocahontas

“Can you paint with all the colors of the wiiiiiiind”. Today is movie day, and of course I had to do something Disney (well, or Pixar) and since my boyfriend is out missing (aka at work even though I painted this over the weekend) I thought I’d do a homage to his least-favorite disney movie, Pocahontas! In his words: it’s as if someone made a movie about the holocaust where the jews and germans made friends and no one died. So, I get it, but I still think the movie is beautiful.

IMG_7227

Unfortunately, I don’t own a color even close to Pocahontas’ skin tone, so I went darker rather than lighter. Despite that, I think the end product looks ok!

IMG_0016

From pinky to thumb, we have the end of her dress, her necklace, her arm tattoo, the top of her dress, and some semblance of hair in the wind. Or maybe the branches of Grandmother Willow, I don’t actually know which! Free-form wavy things.

31dc2015-prompts-3

Wicked

Today’s prompt was “song” but I decided to go with “musical” instead, because there are too many songs and I gave up trying to pick one to turn into a mani! That being said, I am (back) on a Les Mis kick (best musical ever) and wanted to paint at Les Mis mani but decided a French flag was dumb, so we get one of the many other musicals I love, Wicked!

IMG_9993

I have to say, the lighting in Defying Gravity is one of my two favorite light-induced moments in musicals ever (the other being Mirror Blue Night in Spring Awakening), but its easy to come up with something fairly straightforward to paint that is Wicked-related, so here we go!

IMG_9995

The inspiration came from a mani by Brit Nails, which was a great (and fast) idea to do most nails as a gradient! And since Elphaba is infinitely cooler than Glinda, there is no white-and-pink here.

IMG_7089

Colors
~ Green: Salon Perfect – Loopy Lime

IMG_7091

Simple yet awesome! And no I have “no one mourns the wicked” stuck in my head. Song accomplished! Enjoy!

31dc2015-prompts-3

Teal-drops

Like water droplets, but in teal! Today’s prompt was “inspired by a color”. Usually, I would just go ahead and do rainbows for this prompt, but I was feeling lazy. Instead, I grabbed Teal Opaque by Mentality and a stamp that I haven’t gotten to work due to tiny tiny lines, and went to town!

IMG_7190

You guys. THE STAMP WORKED. Turns out stamping polishes really ARE the best for stamping. Who knew? I usually get away with just using a thick older polish, but polish MADE for stamping takes the cake. This awesome droplet stamp by Emily de Molly had been making me want to cry for weeks, because I love it but it kept failing on me! Turns out I just needed stamping polish.

IMG_7154

All the teal in this mani is Turquoise Opaque by Mentality. I was technically sent this polish for review, but then Mentality decided to release its bloggers to the wild (*roar*?), so I feel included to use it but not to show you a swatch on its own. On my ring and thumb I used two thin coats of Turquoise Opaque, which went on surprisingly smoothly for a stamping polish. It is ever-so-slightly brush-stroky. That being said, it stamps like a champ!

IMG_7185

My other nails got one coat of Black on Black by Sinful Colors. The black stamping was done using Black Opaque by Mentality, since my previous use (a dried up Black on Black…I think have 3 bottles in various stages of drying out) didn’t work at all. Black Opaque worked though!

IMG_9979

I finished it off by adding diagonal lines of the stamping color (for fun) and then either black caviar beads or blue striping tape. Sadly, I don’t own teal striping tape, but this was fun anyway! Maybe I should have used silver caviar beads though, you can barely see them!

IMG_9974

Hope you enjoyed! Maybe by the end of this challenge I’ll have used all my EdM images. I doubt it, but there is a possibility! :-p

31dc2015-prompts-3

Robustly Red Marble

Well, I’ve already done my best water marble for this challenge, so now you guys have to endure my somewhat-less-than awesome one! Sorry!

IMG_6988

I kept pulling different colors for this, because half of the ones I initially wanted to use didn’t marble nicely 😦 so I ended up with shades of red and a nude, rather than an orange-purple-red-nude-silver combo like I wanted!

IMG_6965

Colors
~ Silver base: Darling Diva – Diamond
~ Nude: Zoya – Charlotte
~ Light red: Pure Ice – Siren
~ Medium red : OPI – All I Want For Christmas (is OPI)
~ Dark red: OPI – Visions of Love

IMG_9943

I double-dipped my ring finger and had to re-do my pinky. Overall, this was a fail. I tried so hard too! A better marble is coming up on the 30th, I promise.

IMG_9965

Ah well, apparently marbling in front of my AC unit is not my best idea yet!

31dc2015-prompts-3

Moon, Waxing

I almost posted this for yesterdays Half Moon prompt, but decided not to. Instead, it is going up for Galaxy day! Because plain old galaxy manis are too easy.

IMG_6866

I actually started this with a light grey base, then saran-wrapped on white and darker grey before outlining the whole thing in black and covering the rest with a black holographic polish. It worked!

IMG_9882

The design was inspired by banicured_ who was in turn apparently inspired by aliciatnails, whose moons are farrrr more impressive than mine!

IMG_6886

Colors
~ Light grey: Maybelline – Bare Escape
~ Dark grey: WOW – #333
~ White: Salon Perfect – Sugar Cube
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ Black holo: Zoya – Storm

IMG_6888

Hope you enjoyed! I have no idea what the moon is up to tonight, but now I am curious 😀

31dc2015-prompts-3

Golden Daleks

My original prompt for half-moon day was a total flop. I tried to make a cute floral half-moon mani and just kept…adding stuff. I think I’m going to do a few days of “fails” after the 31 day challenge ends, and you’ll see it then. However, the awkward half-moons of sadness looked like someone barfed easter onto daleks, so instead I went ahead and made real daleks!

IMG_9953

The base color is a silvery-gold holographic polish from Sparkly Vernis called Gilded Lemon Drops. When Llarowe had its closing-up-shop sale in August, I picked up three polishes, and this was one of them. It covered nicely in two thin coats, and has a cool golden-yellow sheen in indirect light, plus a fairly strong holo flame in direct light. It is an almost silver gold, and I really like it!

IMG_6944

IMG_6942

Once Gilded Lemon Drops was dry, I added thin curvy lines in black (Sinful Colors – Black on Black) to make half-moons. See, it totally fits the prompt! I then added a somewhat thick layer of top coat and placed a blue rhinestone and small golden studs all over my nails. My thumb got an Emily de Molly stamp from plate 03, and then some 3D additions just for fun. I didn’t want to make the world’s fattest dalek!

IMG_9945

IMG_7052

I am somewhat glad we are over halfway done with this challenge…its getting challenging (ha!) to change my nails so fast!

IMG_7045

So, nerdy half-moon mani it is! I hope you enjoyed 🙂 Tomorrow’s is also fun and moderately nerdy 😀

31dc2015-prompts-3

Blurple Glitter Slices

This was easy, and came out quite pretty! When the prompt for “glitter” came up, I knew I had to grab another of my untried Mentality polishes with the new base, namely a teal/blue/purple/gold mutlichrome glitter mix called Vexare.

IMG_9761

Vexare was opaque in two coats, and covered nicely. Control was awesome :-D. Sadly, removal was rather terrible, but not as bad as larger glitter polishes. The multichrome was easily visible in normal light, and the polish did not need to be layered over black.

IMG_6508

The design was inspired by nailartsakura, and I went with it because striping tape is my friend. The white polish is Sugar Cube by Salon Perfect.

IMG_6483

I ended up adding white dots to my pinky and pointer because they looked a bit lopsided without some white on them! I love how this came out though.

IMG_6467

All this mani really made me want to do was go and use some of my ILNP multichrome polishes again. All the colors!

IMG_9759

Hope you enjoyed! Prepare for nerdiness over the next two days 😀

31dc2015-prompts-3

Lines and Circles

I have lemmed (I almost wrote lusted!) for this stamping plate ever since I first saw it months ago over at More Nail Polish. And now, I finally have it (thanks to a sale at Color4Nails) and I can replicate MNP’s work (oh this is awkward…turns out I have no idea what her name is despite following her for YEARS. Ouch). Anyway. Ta-da!

IMG_9629

I really like everything about this mani, even down to the base color. So, I dug through my stash for something similar, and wandered on Sky Blue by Nabi…which I haven’t used in forever! I need to get this holo collection out and play with it more. They aren’t the brightest sparkly polishes, but the colors are lovely.

IMG_6048

I also have not quite mastered getting stamps on my nails with the lines appropriately vertical. Oh rectangular stamper, I do wish you had been sent to me 😦 My poor circle stamper just isn’t cutting it! That being said, I still like how this came out 😀

IMG_6039

Colors
~ Blue: Nabi – Sky Blue
~ White: Zoya – Purity
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ Stamp: EdM – 03

IMG_9610

All the stamps! Now there are even MORE double-stamp manis for me to play with….

31dc2015-prompts-3

Purple Jungle Flowers

I have so much to say about this mani. It both did and did not come out exactly how I envisioned it. Regardless, I am submitting it for the Day 15 prompt of “delicate print” because it kinda fits?

IMG_9771

I started with a base of two coats of Spree by Mentality, with the new-and-improved non-irritating formula. If anything, I like the new one even BETTER than the old one, because it is both shinier and denser…two thin coats was more than enough for coverage (it used to take 3-4 if I recall properly!). Spree is a pink matte with enough gold shimmer to drown in. It is a bit hard to remove, but quite pretty!

IMG_6445

My idea was to have the pink shimmery polish show out the edges of my flowers-and-leaves mani, which is a stamping decal I created using Born Pretty Store stamping plate L008. Unfortunately, (or fortunately in other cases but this one?) the stamps are HUGE and there really wasn’t any left over space to see the pink through, except a tiny sliver of my thumb! However, this plate is STILL a little fuzzy (I used it back for “gradient day” last week as well) so my images aren’t as sharp as I’d like.

IMG_6527

Regardless, I used 5 shades of purple, 4 shades of green, gold, black, and a holo silver to create this. Trying to curve the dark green and dark purple polish properly on the stamp so that my leaf outline wasn’t purple and my flower outline wasn’t green was hard! I think it worked though 😀

IMG_6531

I’m not going to post individual colors, because it takes too long. If you’re curious about any of them just ask!

IMG_6549

Hope you enjoyed! Tomorrow is even MORE stamps, but this time with sharp crisp awesome lines 🙂

31dc2015-prompts-3

Stained Glass Roses

I intended this to look like colored lace, but apparently that really isn’t a thing. Everyone who saw these thought they were stained glass! So, stained glass it is.

IMG_5932

The Born Pretty Store recently had a stamping plate sale…and I since I know and trust their stamping plates, I grabbed three of them! One of them is what I have affectionately dubbed the “lace plate,” which is where this stamp came from. Since I bought them myself I don’t really HAVE to do a review, but you guys read this so why not?

IMG_9599

The stamp picked up and transferred well, and I really like the white bottom cover that the plate came with! No fear of cutting my fingers on metal :-D. Once the stamp was transferred, I grabbed some of my more jelly-like polishes (wow, I need ones without glitter this is sad) and went to town!

IMG_5943

Colors
~ Nude: Zoya – Charlotte
~ Red jelly: Sephora by OPI – mini scented
~ Light green jelly: Sephora by OPI – mini scented
~ Pink jelly: Philly Loves Lacquer – On The Way To Cape May
~ Green jelly: Mentality – Mona
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ Stamp: BP – L020

IMG_9592

I have been eagerly awaiting this plate (and the other two) so now I just need to go on a stamping rampage! Wheeee 😀

31dc2015-prompts-3

Penguined

Animal print day! I’ve already done a lot of zebra stuff, and I despair of leopard print, so I just went with animals. Namely, penguins!

I initially wanted to do a different accessory for each penguin, but it is summer and so a scarf seemed out of place…and I didn’t really think a necklace would look good and I was official out of ideas. So bow and bow tie it is!

After matting the penguins I went back and made their eyes glossy…matte eyes look creepy and dead and I don’t like it :-p

Fuzzy! I always find animal-themes to be some of the hardest to do, because I’m just not good at eyes, Or animals. Except butterfly wings, but I’ve done those many times at this point and it feels like cheating! So I hope you enjoyed these penguins 🙂
