Purple Salvage

I need to label a few of my polishes “for toes only.” I own, as far as I know, four polishes which bleed so badly that any color you try and put over them, including METALLIC colors, will disappear into the abyss. For some reason, I forgot that this was one of them.

IMG_2738

I was attending a wedding the weekend I did these, and wore a very pretty bright purple dress. Now, I own two bright purple holo polishes, but decided to wear the one I never touch (Purple by Nabi) rather than the one I love (Berry Good Looking by Cupcake Polish). This was a critical mistake. Purple is very pretty, and is exactly the correct shade…and then I stamped over it with silver and a light purple creme. Initially, everything went well. I added some silver beads, took some photos, and then added to coat.

IMG_2762

Within 15 seconds I knew that was a mistake. However, one cannot wear a stamp without top coat, the design rubs right off! So I was in a bind. I was left with very ugly patchy looking patterns on my nails, some of which faded completely into bright purple and some of which stood out sharply. It was awful.

IMG_2789

I showed my husband, who said they looked “just fine” and promptly went to sleep. I almost growled. However, I then remembered that I just got a set of nail art brushes to review in the mail from the Born Pretty Store. Could I just paint over the design by hand?

IMG_2874

The answer, clearly, is yes. I ended up using two of the 5 brushes here, a cleaning brush (which does a very fine job at details, the edge of my nail never looked so pretty, but isn’t stiff enough to really remove large swatches of polish), and the fine detail brush. I love the fine detail brush. It is skinny, the perfect length, and wonderfully sturdy.

IMG_2908

So, I colored over the silver with a glittery fast-dry silver that I also never use because it dries to quickly to be useful. I then grabbed one of the polishes that I always plan to give away, a shimmery top coat that I use maybe once a year, and placed it over the light purple. Voila! This is why I should never give away polish…and also should have a dedicated space for “for toes only” involving polishes that bleed like it’s their job.

IMG_7845

Anyway, that is the saga of my nail art. I could post all the polishes here, but you can’t see half of them so whats the point? The nail art brushes you can find here for $4.59. Enjoy!

Shifting Silver Cracks

Another new polish! This one is super shifty and cool :-). I could hardly bear to cover it, so I did a truly minimal design!

IMG_7655

What you see here is two thin coats of State of Mind by Emily de Molly. When I first saw this polish online I knew I had to have it…precisely because I had absolutely no idea what the actual color of the polish was! It looked very different in various photos, but all of them looked awesome. As it turns out, the polish is a multichrome that shifts from a dusty pink, through copper, and to olive green. It is a deeper color than most that I own. On top of that, it has a bright pink-fuschia shimmer, as well as copper multichrome shards (you can see them in indirect light). It ALSO has an intense linear holo finish that glows bright purple (I don’t know how Hayley made the holo a different color than the polish, but its magical). Basically, this polish is confusing and super pretty.

IMG_1886

The design, such as it is, was inspired by MarnieLP but I might have to try this again with better tape placement now that I know how the spacing goes. I love the idea! Maybe the next crazy weird polish I get 😀

I wish my camera was better at capturing purples…the polish is a bit brighter and quite a bit more pink-toned than it looks under indirect light in my photos. I tried to color correct, but my fingers looked like zombies so I left it this way.

So, I painted my nails with yet ANOTHER new multichrome (I need to stop buying them!!) from ILNP…and then I was stumped. Do I do something bold and shocking? Something subtle? Freehand? Stamping? Decision paralysis!

IMG_8894

Then I realized that my nails are JUST short enough to use only half of one of my stamping plates. Now, this plate has a lot of cool designs that are meant to be centered, but I honestly like thinks that start at the edges of my nails better. So voila!

IMG_8835

After that it was easy: tone-on-tone (as much as possible for a crazy multichrome) and maybe a little 3D bit? Sure!

IMG_8880

The base color is Greatness by ILNP. Greatness is primarily a red-leaning pink, that shifts strongly to orange-gold and then green-gold at sharp angles. The bottle also shows hints of blue, but that does not carry through onto the nail. It is not the shiftiest polish that I own, but it it still quite stunning! A little more subtle than some of the others, but that might just be because pink-gold is less ridiculous than teal-purple.

IMG_8772

I actually ended up wearing this polish for A WHOLE DAY without any art over it. That never happens! Shifty goodness. I do like the art though :-D. The 3D bit is actually a rhinestone that I covered with another multichrome polish just for a tiny bit of contrast (and because the original gold of the rhinestone stood out too much for my tastes).

Colors:
~ Pink-gold multichrome: ILNP – Greatness
~ Magenta creme: Zoya – Veronica
~ Red-gold multichrome: Born Pretty – 212
~ Stamp: BP – L050

IMG_8862

I should take all my similarly-colored multichromes and paint one on each nail for comparison at some point. Maybe then I can convince myself I have enough? Unlikely! Hope you enjoyed!

Neon Chevrons

I saw these on pinterest (with a nifty tutorial) months ago, and have been waiting for the perfect time to attempt them myself. Ta-da!

IMG_6337

The design (and color choices) are lifted directly from Sassy Shelly. I’ve seen other people attempt similar things with results that I find mediocre…what struck me about these was the color combo and color order, so I tried to emulate that! I then went ahead and added a 3D glittery bit…because.

IMG_6352

Of course, I don’t own any of the colors that she used (nor do I own any Cirque polishes, sadly, as they are expensive), so I made do with what I had. The end result was pretty good! Her white stamping polish is much better than mine, and her peachy-ornage is darker (mine is a pastel neon). I also STILL somehow don’t own just a plane holo topper. I need to get on that. So I used a coarser one which doesn’t look quite as good. I also don’t own wavy stencils, only chevron ones, so my nails have sharp points. Otherwise, I think its a pretty decent replica!

IMG_5780

I basically just followed Shelly’s tutorial! It took a while mostly just to let the base colors dry, but was quite simple. This also reminds me that I should make more stamping decals! If I make them thin and use them the same day, they actually bend to my nail shape :-p

Lace Negative Space

This mani is a bit odd…it looked awesome in person, but the photos all came out weird! I’ve posted the ones that look best, but it still doesn’t capture how cool these actually looked.

IMG_5723

The art itself was inspired by Baroquen Nails, as all the best negative space manis are 🙂

IMG_5684

To make this, I started with two coats of a sheer nude, then two coats of a frankened sheer black jelly (making the right tone of jelly took forever!). Next, I stamped the lacy pattern, and then freehanded the red. Finally, I added the 3D bits!

Hope you enjoyed! I doubt you’ll be seeing much negative space in the near future, as of right now my nails are a blotchy odd mix of yellow and bright pink. Silly staining polish!

Refreshing Dry Brush

I’m pretty sure these nails are my first ever attempt at a dry-brush mani. I have to say, it was fun, easy, and looks pretty cool! I think I’ll try it again sometime 🙂

IMG_5497

The design was inspired by badgirlnails. I made up the design on my thumb, and it looks cool too. Sadly, my ring finger tape is a bit wonky, but I only realized that AFTER I added top coat, so too late!

This mani reminds me of the time between spring and summer, when the swimming pools open! Its the teal. It has to be. It also works pretty well for Easter 🙂

Hope you enjoyed!

Pretty Purple Floral

Finally, a post suitable for spring! I usually go towards either dark saturated colors, or very pale nude colors (for the hospital). This mani is just dark enough that I didn’t know if I’d be able to wear it in the hospital, but not so dark that I felt transgressive wearing it on the weekends! Especially with those rhinestones. However, I was safe! No one even noticed :-p

IMG_4553

The art was inspired by @lifeisbetterpolished, because I would never think of something with hand-outlined flowers. For good reason as it turns out…I am never hand-outlining flowers again. That took forever! The results were really satisfying, however.

IMG_4563

Painting these onto my right hand was incredibly challenging, but worked out ok as well! I really enjoyed wearing this mani, despite the lack of bold colors 🙂

Thus ends my week of awesome manis! Back to regular things next week…a mix of good and meh. But no more required classes and ridiculous exams for me! Happy Friday!
