Elegant Silver Grey Overlay

This one might not have many colors, but it makes up for that with elegance! There are few monochromatic manicures that I actually enjoy wearing, but this was one of them. The stamp is lovely, and silver-on-grey works (at least sometimes).

~ Grey: Zoya – Dove
~ Silver: A England – Excalibur
~ Stamp: BP – L049

I feel like I seldom wear things that qualify as classy in anyway, but these nails made me feel fancy! They might not be as much fun as my usual style, but sometimes a girl just needs class over pizzaz :-p

A full 5 days into wearing the manicure I added some rabbits because I have a friend that loves them. I was impressed by how good the mani looked…but also, bunnies! So please enjoy the classing down of the silver grey-ness too 😀

Safari Sunset

Scenery plates make awesome nail art surprisingly easy. All I had to do for this one was gradient, then stamp! The gradient, of course, took longer than anything else, and the result was very fun to wear! Once the gradient was done I actually painted over the whole thing with a yellow jelly polish to brighten the red and oranges, since the base polish was red (rather than white or yellow which are my go-to in a gradient like this).

The base color is a new-to-me red polish called Sookie by Zoya. This is three thin coats. The polish is very pretty and quite bright (I don’t know that neon red is a thing, but this is close), and covers well. It also, shockingly, removed very easily for a red! Most of my reds turn my cuticles red as the polish comes off, and this one played nicely.

I am actually really happy with how my yellow stamping polish gradiented, I wasn’t expecting to get much yellow tone over such a bright red!

That’s all for today, hope you enjoyed! My formal neurology residency starts today (as opposed to the medicine intern year I have been doing for the past 12 months) so my time is going to become even MORE limited. I will try to keep posting, but if the blog has some random blank days, I’m sorry! Blame work :-p

Nemo and Dory

I painted these in May of 2016…so I should probably actually post them. I just wanted to wait until I had enough disney-themed manis to post them all in a week! Whoops.

This mani was inspired by Finding Nemo. Yes, these are super-stylized, yes I still think it’s cool!

I got the idea from Klo’s to me, although she used much brighter aqua for her underwater…I wish I had a similar blue but I just don’t! So mine is more of a teal-based blue. Either way, I loved her idea for the surf!

~ Light teal: Maybelline – Green with Envy
~ Teal: Zoya – Wednesday
~ Light blue: Zoya – Rocky
~ Blue: Zoya – Yummy
~ Dark blue: Zoya – Ling
~ Dory blue: Sinful Colors – Endless Blue
~ Yellow: WOW – #301
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
~ Orange: Zoya – Thandie

That’s all for today! Any other Disney or Pixar movies I should work on painting (I mean, and hopefully posting less than a year after they were initially painted)?

Hop On!

It’s the friday before easter! This only matters because it means I have to take a plane tonight :-p. Somehow, I’ve been wearing these nails all week and none of the fellows, residents, attendings, or patients noticed! My fellow med student did, at least!

The art was inspired by this pin. I just really like the periwinkle color coupled with the egg pattern! Of course, I had to add an easter bunny. The nails on my other hand don’t quite match (and don’t look very easter-y so they’ll be posted at a later point).

My ACTUAL easter nails are red, like the eggs used to crack each other at a greek easter party. It’s an odd tradition, since there are easily twice as many eggs as people at a given party and no one wants to eat them after they are all smashed up!

~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
~ Purple: Nails Inc – Regents Place
~ Teal: L’oreal – Not a Cloud in Sight
~ Pink: Revlon – Bubbly
~ Light pink: Wet n’ Wild – Tickled Pink
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black

Anyway, happy friday and happy easter if you celebrate! I’ll be busy trying to avoid chametz (bread things) since it is still passover, but hopefully there will be chocolate mousse or truffles for me to eat for dessert and not just cake!

Icy Penguins

Christmas and winter manis galore! Starting out this week with something more winter-y than Christmas-y, but we’ll get there!

This design was inspired by badgirlnails. I just need to permanently bookmark everything she does. These are adorable!

I was actually brave enough to wear this to the children’s hospital while I was rotating there, and the few people who noticed them loved it. So, score!

~ Blue: Milani – Cyberspace
~ White: Wet n’ Wild – French White Creme
~ Black: Wet n’ Wild – Black Creme
~ Orange: ULTA – Sun of a Gun

Hope you enjoyed!

Summery nails! I actually wore these right around July 4th, just before I returned to the hospital. Poor long nails, I miss you!

The art was inspired by the awesome and wonderful combo of Chalkboard Nails and More Nail Polish, two of my very favorite nail artists! I took the stamp from More Nail Polish and the accent watermelon from Chalkboard Nails. Unfortunately, I neither have a black sparse glitter top coat nor an ant stamp…so I had to freehand my ants. My boyfriend insists they look like spiders. I hate spiders! These are TOTALLY ants…they only have 6 legs and spiders have 8. Ergo, ants!

The idea of stamping the picnic blanket was genius on the part of More Nail Polish, since hand-painting that would have been terrible! And this is adorable, I think.

~ Green: Salon Perfect – Escape to Neverland
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black

Hope you enjoyed! And I hope it cools down a bit here. It is quite frankly too hot to go outside, much less to picnic!

It has been a while since I’ve done a 100% cute mani, so I thought it was time! Thus, I present tiny adorable whales 😀

This mani was inspired by dry dammit. I even matted it, as I like the result matted! There is one pre-matte photo in the post, just so you guys can see how shiny the blue was before I made it un-shiny.

Maybe I should at some point try painting my beta fish. Then again, he is a ridiculous concoction of mermaid/peacock colors with a giant spiky tail…so maybe not.

~ Blue metallic: Zoya – Estelle
~ Teal shimmer: Julie G – Mermaid’s Tale
~ Grey: Maybelline – Bare Escape
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black

Hope you enjoyed!

Animal print day! I’ve already done a lot of zebra stuff, and I despair of leopard print, so I just went with animals. Namely, penguins!

I initially wanted to do a different accessory for each penguin, but it is summer and so a scarf seemed out of place…and I didn’t really think a necklace would look good and I was official out of ideas. So bow and bow tie it is!

After matting the penguins I went back and made their eyes glossy…matte eyes look creepy and dead and I don’t like it :-p

~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ White: Salon Perfect – Sugar Cube
~ Yellow: WOW – #301
~ Orange: Zoya – Thandie
~ Pink: Revlon – Bubbly
~ Dark pink: Zoya – Ciara
~ Dark red: OPI – Visions of Love
~ Red: Pure Ice – Siren

Fuzzy! I always find animal-themes to be some of the hardest to do, because I’m just not good at eyes, Or animals. Except butterfly wings, but I’ve done those many times at this point and it feels like cheating! So I hope you enjoyed these penguins 🙂

1 Fish 2 Fish

I’ve given up pretending that I’m not participating in the OMD3 Challenge. I want to be playing with caviar beads (again)…instead, I am painting fish. And these aren’t even good fish! ….ok, so my lab mates and my boyfriend loved this mani and figured out what it was immediately, so maybe I am just too hard on my own manicures?

I wanted to do One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish (Dr. Seuss) but apparently trying to draw tiny detailed fish upside down is just not a thing I can do. Either that or my skills have waned (which is also possible). Anyway, here are my somewhat anemic fish. …again, everyone else liked them? The white fish is wayyy too skinny and I can’t get over that.

It also doesn’t help that my “1 2 red blue” is arranged such that you can’t see the “1 2” part on my thumb! Darn curvy nails. And to be true to the book I had to use a yellow background :-(. On that note, any good yellow cremes out there that I should invest in? The one bright yellow I have is honestly rather muted (the one I am wearing…my only other yellow creme is a pastel). So, yellow thoughts?

So yah, fish. Enjoy I suppose!

Just some cute simple baby pigs today! The last time I did pig nails was September of 2014 (woah), and these a pretty different!

My old lightest pink polish dried up (it was 70% empty anyway) so I went to get another…and they seem to have changed the formula! The polish used to take two thick or three thin coats to cover…and this was FOUR (two thin and two thick when it was clear thin coats did nothing) and I am rather pissed about that! So, that is why my nails look somewhat…thicker…than normal.

~ Light pink: NYC – Prospect Park Bloom
~ Medium pink: Wet n’ Wild – Tickled Pink
~ Dark pink: Sinful Colors – Pink Forever
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White

Also, the Rite Aid near my house has officially stopped carrying the NYC line of polish. Which is really rather depressing since I use their top coat! I was at Target a week ago (stocking up on stuff I thought I might need for the new apartment!) and luckily managed to grab 5 backup bottles of top coat. I have no idea what I am going to do when I run out…this stuff is <$2 and works fine, I refuse to buy a more expensive top coat!

Well, it turns out I forgot to write a post for today (oops!) but I did remember to edit the photos, so you get some art! And just a really short post :-p

These were my easter nails! My boyfriend is Greek, so he celebrates easter a week later than normal people, thus these are actually only being posted about a week late (rather than two).

I just wanted cute little chickies! I have been informed that the one on my thumb looks likes its being cracked into a pan. I promise no baby chickens were harmed in the making or planning of this mani :-p

Hope you enjoyed! Maybe I’ll even remember to write tomorrows post before I am supposed to post it!

Dinosaurs! This mani is dedicated to David and Andrea (although there is <1% possibility that David reads this!!). They came to visit and they LOVE dinos, so I had to go with it! It helps that Bundle Monster conveniently provided dino stamps 🙂

So, these colors are (obviously) not accurate :-p. But there are 4 types of awesome reptiles! My pinky has a pterodactyl (although it is unfortunately upside down…thats what you get when you rush applying decals!), my ring finger has a triceratops, my middle finger has what is probably a brontosaurus, and my pointer has t-rex! I did not bother to add feathers :-p

I made all of the dinos as stamping decals, which is why I ended up with bubbles on my nails. I still haven’t figured a way around this! If anyone has any tips, lemme know?

Rwar! Happy dinosarus!

Cute art time! I have been meaning to make cows for a while. My initial intent was just spots with a cow face as an accent nail, but this post by imichelley convinced me otherwise!

The accent nail is supposed to be a sultry she-cow…but it just looks evil. Apparently I can’t do cow eyeliner? That makes some sense…I can’d do human eyeliner either! (No, really. Don’t ask, I’ve almost poked my eyeball out more than once).

  • Pink: Sinful Colors – Pink Forever
  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black

My only word of advice if you want to try this, try to keep the pink layers thin! The polish was not completely dry even after a few hours and it wrinkled when I showered because it was so thick. Sad!

Today, we have the second of the new polishes from Paint Shop Polish: Bennett Witch*! Now, before I rush into this, I need to clarify that I LOVE GREEN GLITTER JELLIES. You have been warned. I also love cute things. Like sheep.

Bennett Witch is a new limited edition polish from the Vampire Diaries collection. It is a mix of various shades and sizes of green glitter, suspended in a blue-green base. I played with this polish on a swatch wheel before realized that it would take 3+ layers to be opaque on its own, and that I actually wanted to use it over a light yellow-green color rather than trying to tone match with a dark green. What you see here is three thin coats of Bennett Witch over one coat of The More The Merrier by essie.

This polish is awesome. It went on really nicely, and I got great jelly and glitter coverage. I worked with thin coats to avoid dragging, but I didn’t need to worry! That being said, I didn’t try fishing for glitter in this polish, and as a result did not pull out any large green squares that were floating around. They made it onto the brush once or twice, but never out of the bottle. I don’t feel bad, I really like the green hexes in squishy jelly! As with Wolf Boy, Bennett Witch only needed one coat of top coat to lie smooth. The glitters in this polish are light, medium, and dark green hexes of various sizes, a few bar glitters, and a smattering of green squares. Depending on what color you layer this over, I bet you could accent either the lighter or darker glitters!

I decided (since it is spring) to accent this with some sheep-based nail art! My little barn now consists of 4 white sheep and one grey sheep. They are so cute!

  • Bright green (base): Essie – The More The Merrier
  • Green glitter: Paint Shop Polish – Bennett Witch
  • White: Zoya – Purity
  • Grey: WOW – #333
  • Pink: Sinful Colors – Pink Forever
  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
  • Top coat: Glisten & Glow – HK Girl

You can find Bennett Witch for $4 or $8 in the Paint Shop Polish etsy site. Go check it out! Especially if you like green 🙂

Easter Eggs

Hello readers! Today I have another easter mani for you guys…eggs and a bunny! Created this using two KBShimmer polishes so it could be entered into their facebook-based contest, so if you love me/the manicure/just feel like making my day a little better (I got 5 hours of sleep. Ugh), please head over to the Facebook page (here) and “like” my mani! It’s the last one.

Honestly, the eggs didn’t come out as sharp as I would like. If these were real eggs, I would feel a bit like a 5th grader! But they are still somewhat cute. The bunny on the other hand…adorable 🙂

And yes, I know, why is my pointer my accent nail? Because I forgot and painted my ring finger white. So all that was left was my pointer and darn it I wanted a bunny! Besides, this is nail art. Do I really have to follow rules?

  • Blue: KBShimmer – I’d Rather Be With Blue
  • Purple: KBShimmer – Plum Tuckered Out
  • Pink: Sinful Colors – Pink Forever
  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
  • White: Zoya – Purity
  • Yellow: WOW – #301
  • Orange: L’oreal – Orange You Jealous?
  • Green: Essie – The More The Merrier

Enjoy! And happy easter weekend.

Nerdtastic Tuesday: Psychic Pokemon

In honor of the somewhat recent release of the newest pokemon game, I am starting off my weekly “Nerdtastic Tuesdays” (where you guys get to see what nerdy concoctions I have come up with) with pokemon!

These nails were commissioned by my boyfriend for his birthday. He, predictably, wanted “pokemon!”.  When pressed for specific pokemon (rather than giving me his current team as I had anticipated) his answer was “psychic.” He then started listing specific psychic pokemon, with the instance that I have at least Abra. So…psychic pokemon!

As with my previous pokemon art, I wanted to stick to just faces. But I didn’t, mostly because I was unfamiliar with the pokemon I was using! Most of my fingers are just the faces…but my ring finger has the whole upper body. That being said, I am REALLY proud of my ring finger! Look at that detail!

From pointer to pinky, we have Natu (a small bird), Espion (cat-like), Gardevoir (ghost woman), and Abra (I have no idea. Rat?). My thumb has the ultimate in pokemon-catching, a master ball.

This nail art is 100% nail polish. Which is to say this took me close to two hours. Oops. I am not planning to list all the polish here, it would take too long. But if you are curious about a specific color let me know!

Ridiculously complicated nerdy nail art..I choose you!

Day 24: Book (3 Little Pigs)

I really struggled to pick an appropriate book for today’s challenge! I initially wanted to do Dune, but I didn’t have enough time to devote to making that mani as beautiful as it deserves to be. Then it occurred to me…I had been wanting to do pig nails for a while, and what better book than the Three Little Pigs?

I started off with a pale pink shimmer jelly polish, Calla Lilly by Revlon. This is two coats. This polish is far from opaque, which I usually hate. However, I wanted a mostly nude shimmer and I knew I would be covering my tips with color anyway. This polish would be perfect for a traditional french!

I then painted on three pigs, a wolf (which looks more like a confused puppy), and the final house (made of brick).

This took surprisingly little time and I’m really pleased without everything came out! Especially the house. I somehow managed tiny tiny lines 😀

  • Pale pink shimmer: Revlon – Calla Lilly
  • Light pink: NYC – Prospect Park Bloom
  • Pink: Sinful Colors – Pink Forever
  • Light grey: Maybelline – Bare Escape
  • Grey: NYC – Sidewalkers
  • Black: Julie G – Black Sheep
  • White: Julie G – White Orchid
  • Red: Revlon – Valentine
  • Brown: Zoya – Dea

Even if my wolf does look more like a puppy, I’m ok with it. I think you get the idea!

So what else did the girls in this challenge huff and puff and paint on their nails? Go look!

This nail art for Day 23 (Music) was inspired by the Owl City song Fireflies (one of my favorite songs just for the sounds…I love how they use instruments).

All of my memories of fireflies (since living in a city for a few years I haven’t seen any recently) are when dusk falls, against the backdrop of trees. So, I created a light green to dark green gradient, and added my fireflies over them!

My thumb and accent nail are intended to be disco balls, from the song lyrics “a disco ball is just hanging by a thread”. My sister thinks they look like I added enamel to my nails, like inlaying it into a tabletop! I might have to try and make that look intentional.

I love the holographic quality of my golden top coat, but I really struggled to get the holographic diamonds out! Its odd, my friend had the polish and her diamond glitters came out easily. My polish is much more fluid than hers, but I really had to dig (even after placing the bottle upside down for a few minutes before using it).

  • Light green: Essie – The More The Merrier
  • Dark green: Sinful Colors – Last Chance
  • Gold glitter: Sephora by OPI – I Found a Pot of Gold
  • Brown: Maybelline – Downtown Brown

Honestly, this mani didn’t end up looking like fireflies or disco balls, but I still think it looked cool!

After my success painting owls on my friend’s nails I decided to try on my own nails! Only…I decided to use my non-dominant hand (since my dominant hand’s nails had been reduced to nubbins and that seemed fitting for owls), did it late at night, and made it complicated. Oops. Regardless, they are animals, and today’s OMD Challenge stipulates an animal mani!

I still like the way these came out, especially my last two fingers. However, I think I could do far better using my dominant hand. This particular owl was modeled on a russian stacking doll owl (featured in the photos) that I got at a fair this winter!

Archimedes was the name of a great Greek mathematician/engineer, as well as the name of the owl in Disney’s Sword in the Stone (hence this mani title). It is also the name of my laptop 😀 I may be a total dork.

Birds of a feather…lots of birds! Ok. This mani was actually remarkably difficult, since I kept trying to outline things in black and add in tiny feather details! I might retry this with my better hand (the boyfriend wants me to).

  • Light brown: Wet n’ Wild – Private Viewing
  • Brown: Zoya – Dea
  • Dark brown: Maybelline – Downtown Brown
  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
  • White: Julie G – White Orchid
  • Yellow: Revlon – Electric
  • Orange: Sinful Colors – Courtney Orange
  • Gold: Maybelline – Bold Gold

I think my greatest success was my thumb, since it is such a large canvas. As it turns out, it is almost the size of the smallest of the stacking dolls!

What do you think, fail or success?

Owl of a Different Color

One of my best friends came to visit, and asked me to do her nails! At first they had to match her dress (she was in town for a conference) but then we got to have fun. She settled on owls, since she went to Rice for college. Rainbow owls. There is a reason we are friends 😀

I thought I would have trouble putting together something fun for her tiny nubbins, but these birdies looked so much better on her nails than they would have looked on my longer ones! …I’m still going to try this on myself, but I think I might stick to traditional brown owls!

I was not terribly happy with her first mani. I didn’t completely wait for the base color to dry, and it turns out that it’s hard to stamp on another person’s hand! It ended up ok, but not my best work. A fun stamp though! BM-315.

As she put it, she had “one short and squat owl, and one wonky-eyed owl” and the rest were pretty darn good.
