Nerds in Love

The second of my Valentine’s Day manis (there will be 5 in total) features something near and dear to my heart: nerd culture. Mostly because I am a nerd. As is my husband (who is as I type this watching youtube videos of people playing various Zelda games…which he has already beaten. Repeatedly).

I wanted to combine two stamps from two different Bundle Monster plates, the nerd culture words (which feature such phrases as ‘trekkie,’ ‘jedi,’ ‘sherlockian,’ ‘whovian,’ ‘potter head,’ ‘sith,’ and my personal favorite ‘browncoats’). The other plate just has 8-bit hearts, much like you might get as lives in older video games.

The base polish here is another of the new polishes that I won from Nail Polish Canada, Blake from the new Zoya collection. I have to say, I don’t know that I would have picked out this polish for myself (it is a dark blue and I already own 6 or so dark blues) but I love it. It is a very deep midnight blue, almost black, which is opaque in two very thin coats. It also has a fine golden shimmer running through it, which makes it even more awesome.

Oddly, in the 21 polishes that I received from the nail art contest, 4 are dark blue! Additionally, 7 are purple. I always figured winter/holiday collections would go heavy on the red and green, but I only received two reds and no greens. Go figure!

Overall, I am pretty darn happy with how this came out! My poor white polish is beginning to truly dry out (and I cannot find it anywhere, my local Rite Aid stopped carrying the full line of Sinful Colors polishes!) so picking up some of the finer lines was…challenging. Regardless, I hope you enjoyed this ode to nerd culture!

Darkened Desert

This mani isn’t quite winter-themed, but I think the dark colors work regardless. Also, I really couldn’t think of what to call this mani but the colors remind me of the Southwest so desert it is!

What you see here are two coats of O R’YLEH (which, how do I correctly uncapitolize? O R’yleh? O R’Yleh?) by Great Lakes Lacquer. This polish really could have been opaque in one coat but I didn’t know that, so my application was uneven. That said, the polish is a bit thicker than I expected and you need to work fast or it will dry and drag.

The polish itself is beautiful, with a dark green base with lots of holo shimmer. It also has a multichrome shimmer to it that shifts from bright fuchsia pink through copper and to gold. It’s a chameleon! Unfortunately, it was also a Polish Pickup Pack October exclusive, so as far as I know there is no way to buy it. But if you like the concept, think about joining the PPP before this month’s offers are gone too!

~ Rose gold: Essie – Penny Talk
~ Orange: ULTA – Sun of a Gun
~ Yellow: KBShimmer – Orange You Glad I Didn’t Say Banana?
~ Teal: Zoya – Wednesday
~ Stamp: BM – XL205

I don’t know exactly how I ended up with this color scheme, but it doesn’t look half bad. I wouldn’t typically mix orange, teal, and yellow (ewwww yellow) with something like a deep green. Or a rose gold!

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed, and happy almost New Years! I don’t plan at this moment to have a special New Years post, but maybe I can find something I haven’t had time to post that I sufficiently glittery. If not, I’ll just kick off my “top 10 of 2017” posts with regards to my favorite polishes and nail art.

Snowflake Multichrome

Snowflake time! I figured it was about right to start posting some real winter nail art. However, I am also sick so these almost didn’t get edited since I slept half the day!

The design was inspired by Sveta Sanders <<>>, because I keep stalking her instagram and finding new awesome things that I need to replicate. Now, she used chrome powder and I used multichrome nail polish, but the result was the same. Next time (and there will be a next time, I rather love this), I will use a slightly more consistent design than snowflakes.

I am also glad that my nails are much less stained than they used to (I think I have the interview season to thank for not being able to wear any bright blues or dark greens), so I can actually have some naked nails! This will never happen again, sadly.

I have at least two other snow-themed manis coming up at some point, I hate painting snowflakes but I love stamping them! I should, at some point, buy a dedicated snowflake plate.

Hope you enjoyed!

Bright Patchwork

It isn’t technically winter yet! Also, as of writing this, it has been unseasonably warm in Philly. So…fall themes are still appropriate!

Although, to be fair, I think I’d find a way to use rainbows no matter the season, but since patchwork designs somehow scream “autumn” I don’t feel terrible for postponing posting these until now!

I actually painted these back when I posted the fall-themed patchwork nails (the orange ones) but these were done with stamping decals to compare. Unsurprisingly, I liked the free-handed ones significantly more, but these were so much faster!

~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ Orange: Nubar – Hot Orange
~ Yellow: Love & Beauty – Yellow
~ Green: Salon Perfect – Loopy Lime
~ Blue: Zoya – Ling
~ Purple: Sinful Colors – Dream On
~ Stamp: BM – 607

That’s it for today! Also, despite all my chatter, the rest of this week is not themed in any way (unless “things that have been sited in my painted folder for months” is a theme). Hope you enjoyed!

Running in Circles

This is the companion piece to my Day 11 nails (dots) from the 31 Day Challenge. However, these have minimal polka dots and maximal stamping, so I didn’t think they’d qualify!

Since I had to wear this mani to the clinic, I needed to make sure my hands were close enough to matching that no one would notice on first glance. Of course, if I was really thinking, I probably would NOT have chosen a neon pink background if that was my goal…

Regardless, I stamped some fun concentric circles (which were part of a buffet-style plate so I had to carefully clean off the surrounding patterns) and then added some extra dots. The result was a little boring, so I threw on some glitter polish in random parts of the stamp as well!

~ Pink: Essie – Sunday Funday
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
~ Glitter: Sally Hansen – Diamonds
~ Stamp: BM – S101

That is it for today! Hope you enjoyed, even if it was a little redundant. Next week starts my fall-themed designs in ernest, so I needed to finish showing neon colors!

Angel Feathers

Apparently today is my 5-year blogaversary. I keep forgetting that it’s in September! I’ll have to arrange something fun when this challenge is over…This mani is a bit simpler than some of my other recent manis, but a lot of that is because I can never figure out what to do with the “supernatural” prompt for Day 29 of the Challenge!

This time, I settled on something related to an angel. I wanted to do a gorgon, but I am still seeing patients so I can’t really have green scaled nails. Angel it is! I didn’t have time to free-hand lots of tiny feathers and I didn’t own an angel wing stamp, but I did own a feathery stamp!

I ended up starting with a blue-grey base with gold flecks and lots of holo shimmer. I then advanced stamped (aka colored in) the feather image using a ridiculously shimmer-gold polish that is a muted white under indirect light. This polish was one of those that once I got it, I regretted it (although it was free, I got it years ago in a contest)…and now am really glad I held onto it! I’ve used it a number of times for coloring in stamps when I don’t want to go straight for insane gold.

~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
~ Gold shimmer: OPI – Ski Slope Sweetie
~ Stamp: BM – XL209

Only a few more days in the Challenge! And at least the last two prompts are easier than this. I think yesterday’s and today’s are my least favorite just due to ambiguity. I hope you enjoyed!

Grey Trimmed Lace

Ok, so this is super boring. Like really really painfully boring. That said, it came out nicely and no one noticed any of the art in the hospital so I’ll cal it a win. It also gave me a chance to use that darn stamp…its been staring at me for years and I never figured out why someone would need some angled lace pattern!

I don’t have much to say about this. Pink. White. Grey. Some lace. I sound like a broken record…I really hope my current stint in the outpatient clinics is more forgiving of manis! I think it will be (I am barely getting graded for this, it is for my own edification).

~ Pink: ULTA – Baby Doll
~ Grey: Zoya – Dove
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White

I hate posing for bottle photos with anything but Zoya or rectangular bottles. I don’t know why, but the shape fits well in my hand. This awkward straight-edged bottle? Not so much. So, thank you brands like Zoya and Emily de Molly for making easy-to-hold bottles :-p

Thats it for boring pink manis! There is one more subtle mani but at it least it isn’t pink or nude. Oy.
