Summer Flower Gradient

I painted these in January. It was cold, there was a sleeting icy mess outside, and I decided it was time for some bright sunny colors. If the outside world would not cooperate, I would just have to make them happen myself! And that is how this manicure was born. Of course, its more fitting to post them in spring so here we are!

IMG_9448

I have been on a kick of adding highlights with my few not-quite-opaque pastel multichromes, and it makes me very happy. This time I added some Rainforest over the center of the flowers just for a bit of variety! You can’t really see it in the sunlight (for example, the second photo) but indoors it was glittery and added just a little kick that I think helped overall. Hope you enjoyed 😀

Neon Blossoms

Oh wow these nails ended up bright. Fun, very colorful, but eye-searingly bright. Which I suppose is what happens when I reach for one of the brightest corals in my collection! This design was inspired by @nails4cocktails. I wanted something with bright colors and cherry blossoms, and this caught my eye! Hillarously, I actually did both of her cherry blossom manicures without knowing they were by the same person, within a week of each other :-p

Hope you enjoyed the further flowers! Sadly the actual cherry blossoms outside are starting to fall off, although my allergies are pleased by this change (for now, until even more flowers show up to set them off again)!

Sunset Skittle

This was just me testing out stamping plate designs for nails to wear to a wedding! You will see what I picked (spoiler: I picked the wrong design) in a while :-p Looking back I honestly enjoy what was on my thumb the most, both because the design is elegant and because I really liked the underlying gradient. I picked something more…floral…and regretted it!

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed! If any of you are looking for some television to watch I strongly recommend the series Firefly! I don’t know why I decided I have the right to give out television recommendations but there you go.

Planets in Orbit

Space!! Space is the best. I don’t remember why in retrospect I made all the various space things purple instead of varying the color scheme, but the end result is more uniform than I had remembered! Regardless, this was quite fun to wear 🙂

Nothing much else to offer today. Hope you are all finding something fun to do (perhaps nail painting?) in this time of staying inside and away from friends. Regardless, I hope you are all staying entertained and good luck avoiding virus exposure!

Expanding Mauve Blooms

What to do with a mauve base? Use grey? Purple? Gold or silver? I never know! For whatever reason I used a purple topper on this, and the end result is thus a lot more purple than mauve. Not half bad, despite the color shift!

I actually really like this stamp, which is why I thought it might be able to overcome my dislike of pointed/rounded nails…but I was wrong. I need to get over myself and just cut my nails short when I lose a corner of a nail. This nail shape looks awful! I think this is the last rounded-nail manicure I have, I haven’t broken my nails this badly in a while. Hope you enjoyed despite the nail shape!

Shifting Berry Swirls

What is better than a multichrome magnetic? How about one stamped with a vibrant berry holo?! Unfortunately, since I stamped with a bright berry purple, you can hardly see the orange-yellow shift of Astral Realm. At angles you can see the swirls in purple over the yellow, but its hard to pick out, sadly!

This was double stamped, first in magenta then in black. Of course as mentioned only the black shows, but it still looked cool! Magnetic polishes are so much fun! And they make for easy and pretty art. Hope you enjoyed 🙂

Faintly Floral

More to nude nails! I painted these months ago, when the hospital was, for some reason, cracking down on colorful and long nails. So for a few weeks I felt the need to blend in as much as possible. They work well for my valentines day theme though, even if these are flowers not lace!

IMG_3091

I think my favorite part about these nails are the nude glitter that i used in the center of each flower. Otherwise I think this manicure would be boring…the glitter elevates it just enough! Hope you enjoyed :-p

Glowing Thai Patterns

It has been a while since I posted a glow-in-the-dark manicure! I actually painted this one some time ago, and it has been sitting in my unedited folder, oops! But here we are all the same. Instead of starting with a white base (as I usually would) I started with a glow in the dark polish (that has a yellow base to it, as far as I know Dayglow was the first true glow in the dark polish on the market, at this time there are many different ones including some with white bases but this is all I have!) that I did a stamping gradient over. I couldn’t make up my mind if I wanted to do yellow to red or yellow to blue…so I did both? And then that didn’t seem to be enough so I also added swirls 😀

IMG_2080

The glow to this polish has remained incredibly strong despite being >5 years old. Most of my older thermal polishes have lost their color shift, and my solar-reactive polishes don’t shift at all anymore…but this polish still glows! Score 1 for Serum No 5.

IMG_7477

That’s it for today! I recommended that all nail polish folks have at least one glow in the dark polish – it is a lot of fun to freak my husband out with my glowing nails in bed :-D. Hope you enjoyed!

Embellished Green

I wanted to use a multichrome that I hadn’t touched in a while, and so re-discovered Mutagen! This polish is so old that it is still in the ILNP round bottle. Anyway, I decided that since mutagen looks variably light or dark depending on if you get the deep green or the pink/silver flash, that it made sense to do a pastel-to-dark stamping gradient. I do honestly love how this came out, it was subtle but depending on the angle of the nail you could see different parts of the design.

I wasn’t thinking about this when I made the design, but it almost looks like ornaments on a christmas tree? If you squint? Anyway, hope you all enjoyed! Happy Friday 🙂

Shimmer Leaves

Happy almost Thanksgiving! You guys almost didn’t get a post today because I almost ran out out of to edit my nails! As it stands this is going to be a bit less polished than usual (hah, nail polish puns) because there just wasn’t time! It’s pretty anyway, and hopefully you will all be too distracted by the epic color shift to notice anything else :-p

The colors for this were just perfect for fall! I don’t know why I never thought to stamp in dark blue over red/orange before, but it is one of my new favorite color combinations. Somehow it just contrasts a bit better than black! Anyway. By the time I get out of the hospital it will be tomorrow, and then there will be Friendsgiving time! My husband is abandoning me this year (he gets time off to go home) so I get to eat with all the other wonderful people in my life who want to potluck with me! Hope you guys enjoyed the nails, and have great meals wherever you are!

Rainforest at Dusk

This might be simple stamping, but the end result was really cool looking! That is 90% up to the base color (Nerida Singer is stunning), and 10% the stamp working nicely. This makes me think of someplace humid and swampy as the sun goes down. Don’t ask me why it makes me think of Thanksgiving as well (green/brown/red?) but it does!

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed! I am a litttttle behind on my nail art editing at the moment, but hopefully I catch up and you will see posts later this week as well! If not…then you know why :-p

Fall-themed Roses

I went to a wedding where the bridesmaids were all dressed in different fall colors, and it was stunning! My assigned color was red, but the colors ranged from coral and orange through a deep plum. Of course, I painted my nails to match :-). Oddly enough, the only roses in the actual bouquets (which I helped make) were orange! Go figure.

Hope you enjoyed! It feels like I should be moving on to winter manicures…its been below 40 for the past few days even though Thanksgiving hasn’t happened yet!

Sharp and Soft in Red

I have no idea what else to call this manicure, it was kinda off-the-cuff make-it-up-as-you-go but people LOVED it. I am talking people stopping me to comment on how cool my nails look. Given how often I paint my nails, that happens surprisingly rarely, so this was a pleasant surprise!

IMG_5842

What you see here are two coats of Ragnarok You Like a Hurricane by Chirality from Polish Pickup Jan 2019 over black creme. I feel like I haven’t posted a new polish swatch in so long! Although to be fair what with my in-hospital time picking up, I havent had as much time to devote to picking over polish to buy! Anyway, Ragnarok is a black crelly with fine green/silver glitter and and a mix of tiny, small, medium, and large (yes, 4 sizes or so) of red glitter. Its really striking! I also love the name.

That is all for today! Let me know what you guys think about this randomness. Was it worth as many comments as it received? Is it just ok (my personal opinion)? Should I be doing this random mix of stamping and freehand swoops more often?

Exploding Pastels

I have failed, slightly. I managed to make every day of posting line up with the corresponding day of the 31 Day Challenge, except this. The final day, and I have failed! Really, I just did not have time to make a tutorial, so I decided to instead go with the 31st day of the Challenge prompt, honor nails you love.

IMG_3774

This nail art was inspired by @urbannailart and other than not having the best hand at curlicues yet, I actually think I did it justice! I need a grainier black holo, apparently. I adore most things that Urban Nail Art puts together, they are both colorful and innovative!

Of course, the sun did not cooperate, so there are not as many photos as I would like, sorry! Overall, I hope you enjoyed my nail art for the 31 Day Challenge as much as I enjoyed creating them! The next few weeks will be not nearly as pretty; all my good art is used up :-p. Phew! Also, apparently yesterday was my 7th blogaversary. 7 years of Flight of Whimsy! I am almost impressed with myself!

Dry Marble Firemaze

So, this was a LOT of fun. I know the prompt is water marble, and this is a dry marble, but it was incredibly fun to put together and the two water marbles that I made for today both came out rather poorly, so you get this instead! After, what is the 31 Day Challenge about if not weird pretty new things?

IMG_3968

I started with a yellow base, and dry marbled the rest of the colors using a fan brush. I think this might be the first (or second) time I have ever even touched my fan brush. The red and dark orange got overwhelming (fanning on colors was so fun!) so I added some additional yellow at the end. After all that, I added a maze stamp. Voila!

I think this is the first year I haven’t posted a real water marble for water marble day, but you guys will just have to forgive my dry marble replacement :-p. Next Monday’s (assuming I get it put together) will be excellent so be excited!

Double geometry

This manicure is just really…blue? (I’m blue badee abadi) I decided that the correct thing to do for this manicure was start with a medium blue, and just keep layering on darker blues. I could have started with a lighter blue, or even used a light blue as a stamp! But no. So this is quite dark.
IMG_7435

In direct sunlight this mani was actually quite pretty, but for the most part I was, as usual, in the hospital where the quality of light is frankly abysmal. As a result, this mani was just not a pretty as I wanted it to be on my nails.

I hate to think that I have to wear manicures that will look good under awful hospital lights, but I suppose I should at least think about it before creating something this intentionally dark again! I feel like each mani this week has taught me a lesson (that I will likely promptly forget). Next week, the fun begins!

Abstract Sky

Ok, so this isn’t QUITE a fail, it just isn’t nearly as good as I expected. Of course, I now own the item I wanted to use (gold glitter for stamping) but I didn’t have it when I painted these! Oops.
IMG_1457

The base color here is two coats of Gaia by KBShimmer from Jan 2019 PPP. This is a deep blue jelly that appears cobalt due to all the glitters: iridescent shards that shift teal to purple and coarse silver holo glitters. Both are plentiful. This polish takes just a bit of spreading due to the flakie load, but it dries down nicely on the nail! I love it.

IMG_1411

The design was inspired by de_briz. So, I started with Gaia, then layered on some MORE flakies (just for fun) and then stamped some dots in black. Sadly, my plate with swirly dots does not stamp well! This is doubly sad because the swirly dot design is literally mine…I had done it years ago and when the “make your own” stamping plate series became a thing I submitted it, and it got in. So this pattern was designed by me…and this plate hardly stamped. So, I started in black (which is not visible at all) and then tried to go over it in gold…and it was patchy and awful. So I top coated and tried to convince myself it was good enough. However, if I am anything in the nail art world, I am the woman who adds too many dots…so I fixed it by going over every dot by hand. With the same gold. I have to say, it looks much better. I also didn’t bother top coating at the end since the gold polish is a quick dry that actually lives up to its name, and I do love vaguely textured nails!

That’s it for today! I’ll have to try something like this mani without spending an extra hour free handing the dots next time. Live and learn!

Square Scales

Beautiful polish and simple art! I do wish I had more stamps that actually looked like scales, I don’t think this stamp does this polish justice! Oh well, still came out pretty :-p

IMG_1286

What you see here are three coats of Princess of the Underworld by Rogue Lacquer from PPP Jan 2019. This polish is stunning! It appears to be a green jelly-based polish with a very strong red-gold-green shimmer, filled with large and small iridescent flakies that shift orange-gold-green. The overall appearance is a red shimmer on a murky green base with flashes of gold. Again, stunning. Also super easy to control!

IMG_1241

It is a bit harder to see with all the rose gold bits on my nails after stamping, but the underlying polish did have a really stunning shimmer/shift to it that was apparent in low light and sunlight. It might have been closer to armor than scales!

IMG_5887

That’s it for today! I do feel the need to prepare you all, Friday’s post is significantly less awesome. I tried something, and it failed :-p

Safari Sunset

Scenery plates make awesome nail art surprisingly easy. All I had to do for this one was gradient, then stamp! The gradient, of course, took longer than anything else, and the result was very fun to wear! Once the gradient was done I actually painted over the whole thing with a yellow jelly polish to brighten the red and oranges, since the base polish was red (rather than white or yellow which are my go-to in a gradient like this).

IMG_5823

The base color is a new-to-me red polish called Sookie by Zoya. This is three thin coats. The polish is very pretty and quite bright (I don’t know that neon red is a thing, but this is close), and covers well. It also, shockingly, removed very easily for a red! Most of my reds turn my cuticles red as the polish comes off, and this one played nicely.

IMG_1109

I am actually really happy with how my yellow stamping polish gradiented, I wasn’t expecting to get much yellow tone over such a bright red!

IMG_5836

That’s all for today, hope you enjoyed! My formal neurology residency starts today (as opposed to the medicine intern year I have been doing for the past 12 months) so my time is going to become even MORE limited. I will try to keep posting, but if the blog has some random blank days, I’m sorry! Blame work :-p

Cracked Garnet

I couldn’t decide if this mani reminded me more of golden tree branches (which was the intention) or a broken gemstone (which is equally cool), so I went with gemstone! Either way, these nails ended up beautifully sparkly.

IMG_2416

I seldom reach for my pure flakie top coats. Honestly, I feel like they overwhelm the color under them (which I suppose is the point) but I feel bad covering up my base color! In this case I used a purple I don’t like much, which made me feel overall better for the focus being on the flakies :-p
