Interlocking Chevrons

I love the concept behind this nail art, but I’m honestly not sure I love the execution? I think this design is busy enough that it would work better as an accent nail and not a full mani. So, just pick one or two nails and stare at them I guess!

IMG_2046

This mani was time-consuming because instead of using striping tape I used stamps and freehand to make everything. Basically, I stamped the initial gold triangle at my cuticle with Penny Talk and then filled in the design (which was hollow) with Juliette. Once that was top coated and dried, I did the rest. I stamped with a black creme polish the black chevrons, and then the rose gold chevron again (each was an individual stamp…so there are 4 stamps on each nail except my thumb which was 6). I then colored in the black stamps with Storm, and did my best to spare the crossing rose gold. I could have just stamped with Penny Talk after the black was all dry, but that would be ANOTHER layer of top coat and drying and I was feeling lazy. So I colored around it :-p….it probably took longer anyway.

IMG_2037

Again, needlessly complicated, but in the end kinda cool? I’ve been back on a bit of a geometric kick recently. I wish I had time for some freehand, I’ve been feeling inspired! That’s all for today, for Friday we get back to colors and some flowers! Hope you enjoyed 🙂

Highly Contrasted

So, being honest, I don’t love this mani. I was a little pressed for time and wanted to both stamp something cool, and use the colors that the nail polish base was designed after. Since the polish is called You Look Like Seafood in honor of Tamatoa from Moana, that meant fuchsia and gold. And unfortunately, this is where I ended up!

img_4672

This is three thin coats of You Look Like Seafood! by Dreamland polish. I love love  LOVE this nail polish…the blue base, the pink shimmer, the flakies, the whole thing is stunning. I also really only needed two coats, I added the third just for a bit more depth. That said, I hate the brush on the polish! There was no way NOT to flood my pinky as the brush was both wide and not curved. 😦

This was also the first time I played with the Moyra Cuts plate, I have used it many times since but I was still working with how to stamp large swatches here! Luckily my polishes were quite opaque :-p. Hope you enjoyed this more than I did!

Pink and Gold with Flowers

How about something pink and gold? I figure with the flowers it is suitably summer-y too!

IMG_2547

The design was inspired by Nails by Erin but my pink base is an AWFUL polish that takes 3 coats and never dries (I need a better barbie pink) and so I wanted to do more things with those nails. I don’t know if this  counts as over doing it, but I actually liked it!

IMG_9068

Using Erin’s nails as a template got me very excited about gold dots. I love adding dots to things. In this case, added too many gold dots to things…specifically my middle finger. Oops. it would have looked better with more white space 😀

Turkeys and Chevrons

You guys. I have a guilty and sad secret. These were my thanksgiving nails from 2016. Yes, 2016. I just didn’t get around to editing them until December so I didn’t want to post them at that point…I wouldn’t make any sense! So, I just waited a year.

IMG_4902

ANYWAY. Thanksgiving nails! I actually wore these while on my pediatrics rotation, and the parents and kids LOVED them. Hilariously  not a single doctor noticed (so I didn’t get into any type of trouble)!

IMG_3407

I did end up using a whole bunch of colors, between the turkeys and tail feathers and coarse chevron gradient. It does look pretty cool though.

So anyway, Happy Thanksgiving! I’ll try not to go a WHOLE YEAR without posting seasonal nail art again. Although it was funny.

Growing Flowers

Orange day in the 31 Day Challenge! I actually have other orange manis, but this used the MOST shades of orange so I think it goes here!

IMG_6657

Unfortunately, this mani had a lot of problems. Neither plate I tried to use (the zig-zags and the flowers) actually stamps well at ALL, and I don’t know why I wanted to make the flowers appear to be growing when having them all the same height on my nail would have looked better! Moreover, the peachy-orange base looked super strange on my nails.

IMG_9041

The Born Pretty Store sent me the floral plate, BP-L067 to use. And I LOVE the designs on it. That said, the first copy they sent me (the one I used here) was etched so subtly that almost no polish would work with it. I had to try with every black polish I own. I ended up contacting the store and they sent me a replacement (which obviously I did not have a chance to use with this mani) which is perfectly etched and makes me very happy. I don’t know that I’ll get around to posting it in the 31 Day Challenge, but if I do I’ll let you all know. The plate has some spectacular floral images, perfect for advanced stamping (aka coloring the designs in).

IMG_9026

When the OPI Washington DC collection came out, there were a few polishes I really wanted, and Freedom of Peach was one of them. I didn’t own anything like it! Unfortunately, there was a reason for that. This is three thin coats of Freedom of Peach. The polish did not self-level very well at all, and the color looks quite strange on my nails! Almost a nude, but with orange in it. I don’t like it. I imagine on other skin tones it would looks better, but with mine it is completely meh.

IMG_6652

So, even though these are ridiculously complicated nails, I don’t love them! They are orange though, so here you go. If you want to buy the stamping plate (which again, watch for etching issues but the images are amazing) you can find it at the Born Pretty Store for $2.59. Enjoy!

Refreshing Dry Brush

I’m pretty sure these nails are my first ever attempt at a dry-brush mani. I have to say, it was fun, easy, and looks pretty cool! I think I’ll try it again sometime 🙂

IMG_5497

The design was inspired by badgirlnails. I made up the design on my thumb, and it looks cool too. Sadly, my ring finger tape is a bit wonky, but I only realized that AFTER I added top coat, so too late!

This mani reminds me of the time between spring and summer, when the swimming pools open! Its the teal. It has to be. It also works pretty well for Easter 🙂

IMG_5626

Hope you enjoyed!

Swirled Chevrons

Another of my recent favorites! This was something I never would have thought of myself (and I actually had to do a lot of touch-ups to the middle layer to make it look how I wanted) but was really fun to do!

IMG_5664

The design was inspired by @mymaynails although honestly I do like her colors better! I tried to color match but I don’t have a neon enough teal-blue, so I changed it up and did pale teal/hot pink/dark purple. I really need to get on a set of neons or bleached neons.

IMG_5658

Unfortunately, this was the first time I’ve tried dry-marbling using a stamper and my results did not look a stood as hers! I ended up re-smushing some more purple and blue tones, since the pink really wanted to dominate. It ended up pretty good though!

Pending Pink-fection

Another new polish! For some reason I’ve decided to post a lot of swatch photos this week. Maybe because I’ve bought a lot of new polish recently. Regardless, this was another polish that I had been lemming after for a while (although, a shorter while as it only came out this fall), that I decided to buy and then ended up adding 3 more polishes to the order. Whoops!

img_4722

This is Pending Perfect by Emily de Molly. It is a bright almost pastel neon teal color (thats a mouthful!) swimming with pink shimmer. It looks like its glowing, and is quite lovely! That being said, the polish was a bit harder to work with. It was thicker than most Emily de Molly polishes I have, although once I figured that out it was easy to manipulate. I needed three coats for coverage, but probably could have gotten away with two if I was paying more attention to how it was spreading.

img_2612

The design was inspired by twi_star, again something minimal because I didn’t want to cover up too much of the polish…although I wish I had stuck to her design a bit more closely!

img_4709

This isn’t a particularly wintery mani, but I wanted to post it now anyway since the color reminds me of teal icicles. Also, this has not been a very wintery winter….its been in the 50’s outside! I am so confused. GLOBAL WARMING EXISTS (well, obviously. Grrrrr).

Cresting Blue

Blue and sparkly, yay! Also, I think this might be one of my favorite single stamping images that I own. And I own a lot. But I’ve used this stamp a whole bunch of times!

img_2019

Anyway, I wanted to create a blue shimmery gradient and then a stamp that almost only shows up over the lighter tips. Goal achieved!

Wonderingly Purple

I’m alive! Sorry for the 1-week posting delay…I only had one nail art design pre-edited before the wedding and I didn’t get a chance to work on any others during the wedding weekend or last week. Sorry!

img_1345

Back in September I spent WEEKS painting my nails various shades of purple looking for what I wanted to wear to my wedding. I ended up with 10 different test designs…and I ended up picking #9, which is here!

img_1395

The actual nails I did for my wedding looked a tiny bit different…I left off the little leaves on the swirls and I made the light purple V-shapes deeper (my nails were also a bit longer). Overall, I think they looked quite good! Not subtle (since purple nails really can’t be subtle) but not super in-your-face. One of my friends even took a photo of my nails with the bouquet that I’ll post with the actual nails in the near future!

img_1368

Putting these together was also a bit weird! These were made in a way that was initially counter-intuitive to me…I started with the dark purple base! Then the light purple (striping tape to delineate) then the stamp (I blocked off the dark purple area with liquid latex). So, easy, but odd! It does work better than my old method though, for some reason.

Colors
~ Dark purple: Zoya – Iris
~ Light purple: L’oreal – Royalty Reinvented
~ White: Wet n’ Wild – French White
~ Stamp: BM – 607

img_4344-copy

So that’s it, the mock-up of my wedding nails! The rest of this week and most of next week will be more purple nails, the ones that I chose not to go with. The only one I have actually already posted was tested back in JULY because I am nuts…and went into the galaxy post for the 31 Day Challenge.

Pointed Gradients

Today begins a week of awesome manis! I don’t know why, but I enjoy clustering pretty manis into one week and less-than-ideal manis into other weeks. So this is an awesome week with some of my favorite manicure stemming back to March! Since I am me, that really means there will be a  lot of bright colors this week.

IMG_5491

This particular mani was just me going “fun with colors and gradients and striping tape!”. I wanted to add rhinestones below each gradient, but I didn’t have the right colors, so I just added a dot with my darkest gradient color. I love how it came out!

IMG_5485

I actually forgot to write down the colors I used for this mani! I think my notes app deleted my initial note (again…oy, this has been a recurring theme). I’m not going to write them all down, I have a pretty good idea what color I used for each nail, so if you are curious just ask!

IMG_5469

Unfortunately, the sun did not cooperate with this mani. Ergo, there are no happy sunlight photos 😦 Despite that, I’m alright with the quality of the ones I picked. Sun, come back and play!

IMG_5468

In other news, it was 95 degrees out all weekend and I am sad. In protest to life, I didn’t paint my nails at all this weekend *gasp* although I did manage to assemble all 140 wedding invitations *bigger gasp*. Busy times!

Delicate Dangles

I had my engagement photos taken the day after I painted these, and I figured that in 15 years I might not want to look back and see rainbow nails (I mean, honestly, I likely would but just in case…) so I have some pretty subtle dangly black and pink nails today!

IMG_8001

Most of this nail art comes from some beautiful water decals from Lady Queen Beauty. The decal is DS-189, and it is an array of half moons, pointed half moons (what I have here) and curly love words. These decals are super thin, which makes them sit nicely flush with the nail…but also makes them prone to folding on themselves. I actually had one fold in half and then rip and had to trash it, so although I love how these look they are a bit hard to work with!

IMG_8000

Regardless, I think these look nice without being overly boring! I almost went and used “love” on one of my nails as well, but that is a bit more kitchy than I was going for. Sometime later!

IMG_3223

Colors
~ Light pink: ULTA – Freshwater Pearl
~ Light pink shimmer: Revlon – Calla Lily

IMG_8002

The water decals are currently on sale for $1.99 at the Lady Queen Beauty shop, and if you have something elegant coming up in the future I recommend them! No one wants to hand-paint tiny lines and swirls :-D. Hope you enjoyed!

Blu Out

My friend just had a baby boy! I actually visited her while she was in labor…its odd to know that both of the women who helped deliver her baby (who are know in obstetrics) were in our med school class 6 years ago! I think that would make me uncomfortable. Anyway, I digress…

IMG_5304

These are actually the nails I wore to her baby shower. Boy, ergo blue! I didn’t want to paint baby feet (I find it creepy) so lots of blue it is! I also just love doing chevrons on short nails, and it’s been a while since I did a chevron pseudo-gradient.

IMG_2565

This is more-or-less proof that I own too many blue Zoya cremes. Seriously, its like a perfect gradient…with blue Zoya polish. I can even go one shade darker if I wanted to. I really ought to consider getting oranges and yellows instead of blues next time around!!

Splotches and Chevrons

Today’s prompt for Nail Art Fashion Week 2016 was “style icon.” Now, anyone who knows me knows I have 0 style sense (if it fits and has some type of glitter or pattern on it, I’ll wear it), and that I don’t care to get one. I wear sneakers with skirts and everyone else can just deal with it :-p

IMG_5365

So, I had to think of something else for “style icon” and of course, I ended up with nail art style icon! Which means I had to mimic something by pshiiit…she is not my favorite nail art blogger, but its a toss-up between her and Very Emily who’s overall nail art style I like best! Everyone else (myself included) tends to vary widely in what we do for art…but pshiiit (and Emily) have a distinct feel to their nail art that I just love! In pshiiit’s case, it tends towards chevrons and pops of color or glitter.

IMG_2576

Anyway, today’s nail art was inspired by pshiiit, so here we go! Lots of teal, some glitter, and some chevrons. And also a funny title because I couldn’t think of anything else.

Hope you enjoyed! Technically NAFW2016 goes through Sunday, but I never post on weekends AND I know nothing about the Fall 2016 collection (nor do I care that much. Fashion is wayyyy beyond me) so this is it!

Mint and Diamonds

I was sent some really pretty aurora borealis rhinestones to review from Lady Queen Beauty, and had to figure out a mani pretty enough to pair them with! I wandered upon this awesome piece from Sveta Sanders and decided to modify it to be glittery.

IMG_2340

I started with two nude polishes (an opaque but darker nude – Zoya Chantal – and then a coat of a lighter nude – Sephora X Marvelous) because I have decided that naked manis just look awful on me. Once my nude polish was dry, I added a swirly white stamp (BM – 201).

IMG_4615

I tried two different stamps using my clear jelly stamper and neither picked up! But the one I am wearing now I have had good luck with in the past…and since centering the stamp wasn’t important I just grabbed my old hard stamper and used it instead. It’s such a different process with a hard stamper, but needless to say I am much better at picking up the image with a hard head.

IMG_2333

I then taped off a section of my nail and added a pale mint polish (Maybelline Green with Envy) around the taped off chevron. After removing the tape, I hand-painted thin lines with silver glitter polish (Revlon Metallic) and then added the studs!

IMG_4611

There are two sizes of studs on my nails, although the container has four sizes (the two sizes not shown are large and very large). I love the shimmery colors in these! I feel like I am looking at nail diamonds 🙂 You can find the studs at Lady Queen Beauty for $2.82. Don’t forget to use my 15% off code, BPLC15!

Fade to Blu

Studs, tape, and gradients, oh my! This was not the easiest mani, but the end result was pretty awesome!

IMG_1996

The design was inspired by Mary Monkett, who always has the prettiest tape manis! The list of hers I want to replicate is long.

IMG_1989

The new polish here is the pale blue base, Blu by Zoya (which I got as part of their New Years promotion). Blu is opaque in three coats, although it is patchy and likes to pull. Really, for a pastel this is pretty standard, but I was hoping for a bit more! The polish is thick but workable. Despite its issues, it is easily the best light blue I own (why are pale teals and greens easier to work with??), so you guys are likely to see more of it!

IMG_3213

Once Blu was dry, I added some tape (and blocked off the lower part of my nail with liquid latex, which is soooo much easier than tape!), and then sponged on the blue gradient at the tips. Voila!

Silver/Grey/Black

Welcome to 2016. Aaaand I start the year of without color! I don’t know why. But there is holo and glitter and 3D pieces so that totally makes up for it, right?

IMG_1541

The art is inspired by @badgirlnails, as many things are :-). I improvised for the thumb, since I didn’t know what she did initially!

IMG_1538

IMG_1414

The only colors used were Storm by Zoya and #333 by WOW. Everything else is big studs, little studs, and silver-grey hexagon glitter. Oddly, the glitter and studs lasted three days before falling off! Go top coat.

IMG_1566

Next week, I should have more color for you guys. Hope you enjoyed!

Chevrons and Trees

Here starts Christmas week! Well, almost week. I have three intentional manis, one somewhat unintentional mani, and yesterday which had nothing to do with Christmas but was still awesome. So, we get some chevrons and Christmas trees today!

IMG_1290

The art was inspired by this pin although I have no idea who the artist is! I went looking and couldn’t find a name, so thank you, unidentified artist, for your art :-p. This is why you should always watermark your pictures!

IMG_1347

I made the chevrons using tape, although the declinations between the red metallic and the silver were free-handed. Still works! And took a lot less time. The tree was also freehanded, and came out a lot better on my thumb (which I predictably did second).

Purple and Gold

I bought new ILNP polishes! Every time they release a collection I write a note about which polishes I want, so when I get a 25% off code every few months I can go and buy the ones I’ve had my eyes on. This time around I got a pretty purple-nude, a subtle blue shimmer, and a ridiculously bling-y gold. This is the gold!

IMG_0822

I cannot get over this polish. In direct light is a pale gold linear holographic polish. In indirect/indoor light it is a very light pale gold with both gold and silver flakies. And it is stunning. It also has perfect coverage in 2 coats, and is surprisingly easy to clean for a glitter…and the FLAKES and the HOLO and its just…wow. I am so glad I bought this. I’ve been trying to figure out which of ILNP’s “ultra holo” polishes I want, but I just couldn’t pass on a pale gold. Ugh. I drool.

IMG_0175

Once Fame was dry, I added chevrons with different sizes of striping tape (thin, medium, and thick, all from the Born Pretty Store) to make fun patterns. This is honestly one of the first bits of nail art I’ve done that I think would look better if my nails were shorter!

IMG_0222

IMG_0198

Glitter, so much glitter. And flakie. And rainbow. I went wedding dress shopping last weekend while wearing this, and all the bridal attendants wanted to know where I got my nails done! It was fun. (Also, why are wedding dresses so expensive? And why do so many of them have SO MUCH LACE AND GLITTER. I never though I would say this, but there is defiantly a such a thing as too much glitter!!).

IMG_0826

Hope you enjoyed!

Autumn Glitter

Stripes! And chevrons! I am easy to please 🙂

IMG_8776

I was going for a fall-themed color scheme, and I started with brown/orange/red/purple, but the brown was just a little too dark so I switched to pink. Now it is more bright than fall themed, but I like it all the same! The brown only makes a brief appearance on the edge of my thumb.

IMG_8746

This mani was super easy and super fast. Base color, striping tape, and ta-da! Do you think it looks like fall though? Or just glittery?
