Nerds in Love

The second of my Valentine’s Day manis (there will be 5 in total) features something near and dear to my heart: nerd culture. Mostly because I am a nerd. As is my husband (who is as I type this watching youtube videos of people playing various Zelda games…which he has already beaten. Repeatedly).

I wanted to combine two stamps from two different Bundle Monster plates, the nerd culture words (which feature such phrases as ‘trekkie,’ ‘jedi,’ ‘sherlockian,’ ‘whovian,’ ‘potter head,’ ‘sith,’ and my personal favorite ‘browncoats’). The other plate just has 8-bit hearts, much like you might get as lives in older video games.

The base polish here is another of the new polishes that I won from Nail Polish Canada, Blake from the new Zoya collection. I have to say, I don’t know that I would have picked out this polish for myself (it is a dark blue and I already own 6 or so dark blues) but I love it. It is a very deep midnight blue, almost black, which is opaque in two very thin coats. It also has a fine golden shimmer running through it, which makes it even more awesome.

Oddly, in the 21 polishes that I received from the nail art contest, 4 are dark blue! Additionally, 7 are purple. I always figured winter/holiday collections would go heavy on the red and green, but I only received two reds and no greens. Go figure!

~ Blue: Zoya – Blake
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
~ Red: City Color – Masquerade
~ Stamps: BM – 601, 602

Overall, I am pretty darn happy with how this came out! My poor white polish is beginning to truly dry out (and I cannot find it anywhere, my local Rite Aid stopped carrying the full line of Sinful Colors polishes!) so picking up some of the finer lines was…challenging. Regardless, I hope you enjoyed this ode to nerd culture!

Hippocampal Neurons

I had another scientific conference to go to, which mean more nerdy neuron-themed nails! Sadly, only two people even noticed them, but my talk went over well so I suppose I don’t feel too bad :-p

What you see here are hippocampal neurons (which is to say neurons that live in the hippocampus in the brain, the places where memories are encoded). They have a very well described look to them…smallish cell bodies with long axons and dendrites.

This particular design was inspired by PhD Nails with a little of my own flair! She used a stamp which I don’t have, so I free-handed everything. The red dots are synaptic markers, which I don’t study but no one wants to see little tiny transferrin receptors!

I meant to turn the cell body blue (DAPI, which is blue, is commonly used to stain the nucleus of cells) but I completely forgot. Oops!

~ Black: Zoya – Storm
~ Green: Essie – The More The Merrier
~ Dark green: Sinful Colors – Exotic Green
~ Red: City Color – Red

Hope you enjoyed some neuron time! Tomorrow we go back to regular nail art.

Sky Dragon

I’m playing fast and loose with the OMD3 prompts! It’s fun. Today’s prompt was “love” so I decided to work with something I love rather than painting hearts. And, I love dragons! (this really shouldn’t surprise anyone). I also have this awesome dragon stamp from the Born Pretty Store to test out, so it was a win-win situation 😀

The sad part is I had a whole post typed up and it magically deleted itself, so you are left with this somewhat shorter one because I am pressed for time (and sad that my post self-destructed). Anyway, I love dragons, and the Born Pretty Store was kind enough to send me a dragon (and flower) stamp to review!

I started off making stamping decals out of different parts of the dragons body, since it was far too large to fit on one nail. I didn’t plan to end up with the dragons face on my thumb, but it was the only nail big enough for most of it! You can see what the decals looked like before I put them on my nails below.

I made a background of “sky” with a blue creme under Snow Much Fun, avoiding the snowflake glitters. The base looked awesome when I was done, but I didn’t figure on the larger glitters distorting the dragon image when I placed it! or with them somehow darkening the dragon a bit (because the base wasn’t white).

Honestly, I liked the decals better than my nails when I was done! Maybe if my nails were bigger and I could fit more of the dragon…because the dragon was awesome. But my poor nails are tiny 😦

~ Gold: Salon Perfect – Gold Leaf
~ Red: City Color – Red
~ Copper: Pure Ice – Magic
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ White: Salon Perfect – Sugar Cube

If you love dragons like I do, head over to the Born Pretty Store and get this stamp! It’s pretty awesome. I need to play with the flowers next. This plate is $3.99, with an additional 10% off with the code LY5X31. Enjoy!

Ozone Sunbreak

Not much to say today! I wanted to play with purples and oranges, so I did. The water marble on my ring finger came out rather less exciting than I had hoped, and the one on my thumb ended up looking like some crazy modern art piece.

I’m pretty sure I’ve done this design with different colors before, so here it is again! Minus my thumb. I really don’t know what to make of it. Like it? Hate it? I think I can recreate the style if I try, but it took some effort!

~ Orange: Zoya – Thandie
~ Red: City Color – Red
~ Pink: Zoya – Veronica
~ Purple: Zoya – Monica
~ Glitter: KBShimmer – I Only Have Ice For You

Hope you enjoyed! Now I just need to decide which mani I should post tomorrow…rainbows or butterflies! 😀

OMG GLITTER. So much glitter. Little tiny glittery rainbow! This mani was designed around Glitz by Mentality, which is basically a sparkly rainbow in a bottle (but with more teal and red than the other colors). But basically, GLITTER!

I couldn’t convince myself to cover the glittery goodness, so I only did an accent nail with Glitz. Despite being 100% glitter in a clear base, it only took 3 thin coats for full coverage. What’s more, the control was great (think Shimmer polishes)! There was 0 clean up with this polish. The glitter density also makes for great glitter gradients (see my thumb)! I did put glue down as a base coat, because I imagine this would remove like, well, a glitter :-p

The primary colors in Glitz are tiny glitters in shades of red, purple, teal, silver, and maybe some light blue. Somehow, you get flashes of green in there too, although I don’t actually see green glitter! So I accented the whole thing with a fishtail 🙂 It has been a while since I did a nail-braid!

~ Glitter: Mentality – Glitz
~ Red: City Color – Masquerade Red
~ Teal: Petites Color Fever – Figi
~ Silver: Revlon – Metallic

I don’t usually do super-glitzy party nail, but when I do, I can’t imagine I won’t grab for this polish. Easy application and so much colorful glitter! If you want to add Glitz to your stash (and oh god the name is perfect), you can pick her up for $6.50 at the Mentality shop. Happy polishing!

Violet Beauregard

A week or so ago I asked if anyone had any nail art requests…and I actually got one response! One of my readers wanted me to do some Violet Beauregard nails, from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. As creepy as I find that movie (seriously, “is it raining is it snowing is a hurricane a-blowing” used to make me shudder) I though it was a cool idea! So, some Violet nails and a tutorial 🙂

Although Violet is famous for becoming a human blueberry, I figured nails were a bit too small of a canvas for an expanding person. I just made her dress! As it turns out (through copious google searching) Violet actually wears blue. Go figure!

~ Blue: Zoya – Tart
~ Dark blue: Maybelline – Midnight Swim
~ Red: City Colors – Red
~ Gold: Sally Hansen – Liquid Gold

This is also the most you will ever see of my naked nail. My nails are kind of a mess! I don’t think they like being this long…but I like them this long. So I will deal and you shall see no naked nails.

Step 1: Paint the nails a true blue (I used a slightly metallic blue for added shimmer). Don’t forget to first apply base coat, blues can stain!
Step 2: Using 100% acetone, remove a half-moon from your cuticle. This will create the neck scoop of Violet’s dress
Step 3: Using a darker blue polish, create two semi-circles around the half-moon. These will become her collar.
Step 4: Using a bright red polish, add a thick band near the free end of your nail to create her belt.
Step 5: Using a thin nail art brush, create a rectangle out of gold polish around the center of the red belt band. This creates the belt buckle.
Step 6: Using a small dotting tool (unbent paper clip for me!) and gold polish, add 3-4 buttons in a line between the middle of the blue collar and the belt. Top coat and enjoy!

The Jester

I saw a short 4-panel tutorial about how to make jester nails, and just went with it! Unfortunately, I saved the jpg and it has no identifying info. So whoever you are, I’m sorry I can’t link back!

This was really rather easy and fast. Red base. Tape. Black half. Black outline and then white filling for the collar. I then added some white glitter, which may have been overkill. The boyfriend thought it was a crown!

So, what do you guys think? Cute? Strange? Also, my Bundle Monster Create Your Own 2014 just arrived (because one of my designs was chosen) and ITS SO COOL! I’m wearing two of the stamps (including my own!!!!!) right now. I don’t know that I’ll have them up by the end of this week, but certainly by next week you guys will start seeing some new stamps! So, if there are any in the stamping set you are particularly curious about (if you wanted to know before you bought a set) just let me know and I’ll try them out! 😀

Set Fire To The Rain – 31DC2014

It’s song day in the 31 Day Challenge! I had the hardest time picking a song this year…I wanted (again, like last year) to do Fireflies by Owl City, but realized a different song had been stuck in my head for days. I present the nail art interpretation of Set Fire To The Rain by Adele.

I swear, I am trying really hard to learn all the lyrics to this song. I just love the way Adele sings, and for some reason I know most of her other songs and just missed this one! Oops.

Honestly, this looked better in my doodles. It is harder to draw flames with my non-dominant hand than I had anticipated, and I should have moved the raindrop further down my nail so I didn’t run out of room for the fire! Live and learn.

~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow Me White
~ Light blue: Zoya – Rocky
~ Dark blue: Maybelline – Midnight Swim
~ Red: City Color – Red

Golden Feathers

I love feathers. Possibly my most common hand-painted art is feathers. But I wanted something fast and easy today, so I went to nail stickers! And something about gold on a marbled red background just…gets me.

The stickers I used are from the same 12-pack I got from the Born Pretty Store a few months back. I love them. These feathers are the only non-flowers on the sheet! They are also ideal for (very) long nails…this is the first time I thought I could fit them!

The base for this mani is a marbled mix (saran wrap method) of three different metallic reds. I started with Zoya Isla, then dabbed on a darker red (Confetti Masquerade Ball) and a brighter red (City Color Red). I almost didn’t want to add stickers when I was done, the marble was so pretty!

For less than $5 (they are $4.73) getting 12 sets of awesome floral/feathered stickers is a pretty good deal! If you want some for yourself, check them out here and don’t forget to use my 10% off code LY5X31!

Tropical Tease

I put these nails together when it was pouring out. For days. I needed something bright and happy to cheer me up! What’s more, my original version of these nails is my most pinned design on pinterest. Despite being done so long ago that my nails look funny and I didn’t really clean up my design!

This was a fairly simple design…a gradient and then some matte rhinestones from the Born Pretty Store. I am loving these rhinestones! Oh man, leaf-shaped matte rhinestones? Yes!

The gradient polishes are not matte to begin with (I added a matte top coat, which is sadly beginning to accumulate little white specks that show up on my nails as the polish dries), while my black polish is matte. Which means it dried awesomely fast!

  • Orange: Sinful Colors – Courtney Orange
  • Red: City Color – Red
  • Purple: Sinful Colors – Fig
  • Black: Mentality – Rascal

If you want to play with some neon rhinestones, you can find them at the Born Pretty Store for $3.95. Don’t forget to use my 10% off code….LY5X31!

Night Outing

I love gold/black pairings. Last week, I showed you guys my “Night Out” manicure from a recent trip to New York. Todays manicure was worn…well…just to lab. My mice and cells got to see lots of glitter! The manicures are very similar in color, but I love them both!

This one particularly was inspired (yet again) by Wacky Laki, and features another new Cult Nails lacquer: Walk of Shame. I tried to get as close to Laki’s mani as possible, even using a similar base for the glitter! Unfortunately, I don’t have gold beads, so I improvised.

This mani was pretty easy to put together and very fun to wear! It was also distractingly shiny (mostly thanks to the holographic glitter in Walk of Shame). Again, I used a peel-off base coat so that this manicure would remove, but it lasted 4 days with minimal chips!

  • Grey duochrome: Essense – Chiq Reloaded
  • Gold glitter: Cult Nails – Walk of Shame
  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
  • Red: City Color – Red

Hope you enjoyed!

Duochrome Glitter

One lovely afternoon, two of my friends came over for a polish fest! One of them is an amateur lacquerista herself, and brought with her one of the kleancolor chunky holos (which are really chunky multi chromes) for me to play with!

I couldn’t decide exactly what to do with it, and honestly what I created is a bit…confusing. Too many colors!! I just played off the red primary tone in the kleancolor glitter and added some red tips with black dots. Because…why not?

  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
  • Glitter: Kleancolor – Chunky holo Bluebell
  • Red: City Color – Red

I do like this glitter though! Maybe next time I can plan better so my nails don’t look so messy!

Dancer the Reindeer

*Provided for review

Today, for your viewing pleasure, I present Dancer from Paint Shop Polish. Candi (the maker of these lovely polishes) sent me two bottles from her winter release…Dancer and Donner! I love reindeers 🙂

Dancer is a deep brick red shimmer. The polish went on easily, was opaque in two coats, and dried rather fast. Although the polish looked very streaky on application, it dried completely flat! I was impressed. This polish leans a bit more orange than any of the deep reds in my collection, and has a beautiful shimmer in the light.

I decided to compliment Dancer with reindeer! How could I not? And snow. Because reindeer and snow just make sense. I even have a reindeer tutorial that will show up on Nail It! Magazine soon!

  • Deep red: Paint Shop Polish – Dancer
  • Brown: Zoya – Louise
  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
  • White: Zoya – Purity
  • Red: City Color – Red

You can find Paint Shop Polish on etsy, Facebook, and twitter. There are so many lovely colors to choose from! If you don’t want to invest a lot of money, Candi offers both mini and full size polishes, including of Dancer.
I also have a 10% off coupon for you guys! Use the code PSP10 on your next order, and enjoy!

Nerdtastic Tuesday: Portal 2

As mentioned before, I am a nerd (in case you couldn’t tell from yesterdays post…or you know, most of them). One of my all-time favorite games is the two-player version of Portal 2. This mani is dedicated to that game 🙂

Those unfamiliar with the game will probably have no idea what’s going on here. My pinky is a turret (shoots lasers in the game) and my 2nd and 4th fingers are the orange/red and blue/purple portals (I always played the orange player). My middle finger is one of the main characters in the game, Wheatley. My thumb is the Aperture logo.

Even if you don’t play games regularly, I recommend this one! Its a puzzle-based game and it’s a LOT of fun. Honestly, the only other game I play is Mariokart (although I love watching lots of other games ranging from PacMan to Zelda. I just don’t like playing them). Oh, and Minecraft!

Ok, back to nails. These took a while due to the details, but are actually rather simple.

  • White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White / Julie G – White Orchid
  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
  • Orange: Nail Art – Orange
  • Bright orange: Julep – Natasha
  • Dark blue: Sinful Colors – Endless Blue
  • Blue: Zoya – Wednesday / Nail Art – Blue
  • Red: City Color – Red
  • Grey: NYC – Sidewalkers

These make me happy. Hope you enjoyed them!

Nerdtastic Tuesday: Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

This is the third installment in my nerdy nails agenda (there are many more in the planning stages). These nails are the embodiment of one of my favorite if wackiest book series…the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy!

My thumb has three dolphins (famous for saying “goodbye and thanks for all the fish”), the second most intelligent species on earth. The first are mice.

From pointer to pinky: DON’T PANIC (as written large on the Hitchhiker’s Guide), the green blob alien from the cover, 42 (the answer to life, the universe, and everything), and Marvin (the paranoid android with a brain the size of a planet).

The base of the mani is a polish I got from the Sephora by OPI line sale, called 212-Sephora. Its a mix of glitter in a black/very dark brown base. It was opaque at 2-3 coats. I really like the mix of glitter! Brown, orange, green, and gold, with small glitter, medium orange flakes and glitter, and holo particles. It has an interesting shine! However, it was very gritty and needed two coats of top coat once I added my design to smooth it out.

  • Black glitter base: Sephora by OPI – 212-Sephora
  • Gold: Maybelline – Bold Gold
  • Orange: Nail Art – Orange
  • Green: Nail Art – Green
  • Red: City Color – Red
  • White: Julie G – White Orchid
  • Grey: NYC – Sidewalkers
  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black

Enjoy! (And thanks for all the fish :-D) [Btw Doctor Who fans, do not worry…this Friday my 50th anniversary nails will go up! I’m wearing them right now. Technically they are nerdy, but I can post two nerd manis in one week if I want!]

Day 14: Flowers (Lotus)

For Day 14 of Chalkboard Nail’s 31 Day Challenge, we are supposed to make flowers. My flower mani is the sister of my Day 1 (Red) mani, made using the other hand from my ‘ALL THE REDS’ nails. Here, I tried my hand at free-handing lotus blossoms! I think they came out ok.

My favorite is actually on my thumb, although I am less crazy about the simple red creme on that finger!

I think these would be prettier if they were more delicate! Oops. Live and learn.

  • Pure Ice – Siren
  • City Color – Red
  • Maybelline – Forever Festive
  • Zoya – Isla
  • China Glaze – Ruby Pumps
  • White: Julie G – White Orchid

Hope you enjoyed, and don’t forget to check out the other girl’s nails!

Cacophony of Color: Red

Ladies, and whatever odd gentleman has somehow managed to stubble on this blog (sorry!), today, for the first time in months, you get to see BOTH my hands! A friend of mine is getting married shortly, and I am going to be doing all the bridesmaids nails. The dress is red…so I decided to test out all of my red polishes and see which matched. (This not a nail art post…but I thought it was worthy of posting. If you want nail art, check back every day in September! I’ll be taking part in Chalkboard Nail’s 31-day challenge)

As it turns out, I have exactly 10 red polishes (go figure) and I might as well do a comparison post!

Out of all 10 polishes, I only have one dupe, or near dupe. My left hand has the metallics and lighter reds, while my right hand was given the glitters and darker reds.

Honestly, Isla and Forever Festive are almost identical. Forever Festive is slightly darker (or more blackened), but I certainly don’t need both polishes! Oops. I just love deep red glowing polish!

I don’t yet know what the verdict is on which color I should paint all the nails, but I will say that I love my reds! I think Blaze remains my favorite, but some of these are just beautiful. Any favorite reds out there?

If you like this type of post let me know…I have enough purples, teals, light blues….and I dunno probably golds to do a similar comparison. Happy weekend!

This is, hands down, the most expensive mani (polish-wise) that I have ever done. The base colors (Viper and Nouveau Riche) are $20 each, and I have a butterLONDON ($15) as well as Revlon, Sinful Colors, Maybelline, City Color, and Julie G on here as well (although those are more affordable).

The main base is Nouveau Riche, which only took two coats. I am not looking forward to removing this polish, but WOW does it sparkle! As I mentioned before, it looks like the offspring of Zoya Faye and butterLONDON Scuppered. Its a complicated mix of glitter, with gold predominating but pink and maybe hints of purple and green mixed in. The accent nail and thumb have two easy coats of Viper, a dark dark green with a bright green sparkle scattered throughout. Love.

I then stamped using BM-215 to create the snakeskin pattern. I foresee using this pattern a lot with different colors…it was one of the reasons I wanted this stamping set so badly!

Finally, I hand-painted a snake face and tail on my accent nails. Unfortunately, I had to abandon my sister’s polish as I returned to my apartment for an evening (oh beach, how I miss thee), and so the snake and tail are made of a combination of golds that I own…namely Scuppered and Bold Gold.

Overall, I am really pleased with how this turned out! I had a hard time deciding what to do…initially I wanted to add snake eyes as the accent, but I thought it would just be creepy. I maintain that opinion!!

  • Gold glitter: Estee Lauder – Nouveau Riche
  • Gold glitter: butterLONDON – Scuppered
  • Gold: Maybelline – Bold Gold
  • Green glitter: Estee Lauder – Viper
  • Green: Sinful Colors – Last Chance
  • Yellow: Revlon – Electric
  • Black: Julie G – Black Sheep
  • Red: City Color – Red

Hope you enjoyed!

Remember Remember

Day 30 of the OMD Challenge is “Comic Book.” My favorite comic book (ok, graphic novel) is also one of my favorite movies…V for Vendetta!

As soon as I saw this day in the challenge, I knew what I wanted to do…I just didn’t know if it was up to it! This is the first time I have ever done a face and been happy with it. Look at Guy Fawkes! The mask face was based on a one I found at The Nailasaurus.

The scarlet carson rose on my middle finger was inspired by a 3D rose put together by work/play/polish for Minnie’s Closet. Unfortunately, I didn’t go back to look at hers (I just remembered red textured polish over black) so mine doesn’t look nearly as nice. I’ll have to try this again but do it PROPERLY next time!

The other three nails were just things that reminded me of the comic book that I free-handed…the cross symbol of the government, the red on black “V”, and V’s daggers.

  • Black: Julie G – Black Sheep
  • White: Julie G – White Orchid
  • Red: City Colors – Red
  • Red textured: Julie G – Hot Cinnamon
  • Grey: NYC – Sidewalkers
  • Pink: L’oreal – Orange You Jealous?
  • Silver: Nails Inc – Trafalgar Square

For such a cool looking mani (if I do say so myself), I used remarkably few colors!  Enjoy!

I am really excited for today’s theme…TV Show! I don’t watch much (ok, any) TV. The only shows I have ever watched more than 5 episodes of willing are Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Dollhouse (I love Joss Whedon), Dr. Who, Scrubs, and now Avatar: The Last Airbender. My sister and my boyfriend told me I would love it, and its oddly (and adorably) compelling! So, I used the symbols from the four nations in the TV show on my fingers, plus the arrow which marks an airbender master.

The four nations are (pinky to pointer): earth nation, air nation, fire nation, water nation. I am really REALLY happy without the fire nation came out. I didn’t think I’d be able to do it!

My thumb was super easy, just the arrow from Aang’s head. My boyfriend came in when I was done with my finger but not my thumb and goes quiet…”Eva, please do his arrow?” “Of course!” (I was already planning to do it. My thumb was already painted nude).

There are two new polishes in this mani, that I think you will be seeing a lot more of! My first dark blue creme, Midnight Swim by maybelline (one coat!!!) and a really interesting green crelly, Exotic Green by sinful colors. Two coats, but it looked squishy! I want to play with this more. My first crelly!

  • Green: Sinful Colors – Exotic Green
  • Gold: Maybelline – Bold Gold
  • Light blue: Sally Hansen – Breezy Blue
  • Blue: Zoya – Yummy
  • Dark blue: Maybelline – Midnight Swim
  • Red: City Color – Red
  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
  • Silver: A England – Excalibur
  • Nude: Wet n’ Wild – Private Viewing

Hope you enjoyed! These were fun 🙂
