May I now reveal my first ever successful RAINBOW DRAG MARBLE. I liked using my cell-making polish and just moving it around on the mat or stamper head, but once I found the key with making a drag marble, the game changed. Look at this rainbow. And these cells. In order to figure out which of my three cell-making polishes (nude, blue, or red) to use in the design, I made a bunch of decals using different combinations! The one that worked best was red, but blue looked really good as well. The nude looked a little muddy through the otherwise bright polishes, and was only used on my thumb in the end. Overall, I absolutely ADORE how this came out, and I imagine I will be coming up with ways to make more drag marbles with cells in the future!
Colors: ~ Light pink (base): Zoya – Jordan ~ Red cells: Dance Legend – Spot It Red ~ Blue cells: Baroness X – Atlantis ~ Nude cells: Baroness X – Sand Ahoy! ~ Pink: Essie – Sunday Funday ~ Yellow: Emily de Molly – LE 196 ~ Green: Zoya – Josie ~ Blue: Zoya – Ling ~ Purple: Zoya – Landon ~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black ~ Silver: A England – Excalibur ~ Stamp: Floral BP – X43
This ends my rainbow, sometimes glittery, frequently neon, birthday week nail extravaganza. I have mostly exhausted the rainbow nail backlog in my unposted folder (other than the one I am holding out posting until the 31 Day Challenge in September, if anyone is even doing that anymore), so I will need to make more before next year! Of course, I am wearing some NOW since I just turned 34 (yikes) but that will not be enough. More rainbows!
Second post of RAINBOW WEEK! I wanted SO BADLY to make a set of gradient nails that progressed down the rainbow with different rainbow sections on different nails. Technically, this accomplishes that. Realistically, my ring and pointer finger look very similar (one is purple-pink-yellow and the other is pink-yellow-green but you can hardly tell). Ultimately I should have flipped the gradients on my ring and maybe pinky fingers to make things more interesting but I was having a hard enough time keeping straight which part of my very long gradient on the makeup sponge went where. I do love the taping design I came up with though! Overall not terrible, but not perfect. I will have to do MORE NEON GRADIENTS (oh no)!
Colors: ~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White ~ Hot pink: Zoya – Kelsey ~ Bright orange: Zoya – Thandie ~ Hot yellow: Love & Beauty – Yellow ~ Neon green: KBShimmer – Race Against Slime ~ Blue: Zoya – Ling ~ Purple: Zoya – Landon ~ Fuchsia: Sinful Colors – Dream On
This also reminds me that I should go and figure out if Sinful Colors still sells Dream On. It is a fantastic color (over white at least) and is incredibly pigmented…and my bottle is 90% dried up because I bought it early in my 12 year nail art hobby and polish just doesn’t last that long. Time to hunt! Hope you enjoyed, and more rainbows coming Friday!
My birthday is tomorrow! Which means that this is the official RAINBOW WEEK! I have had a tradition for the past few years of painting my nails with crazy awesome rainbows on my birthday, because rainbows are just the best. This week will show three of my rainbow nails in honor of my birthday 🙂 including my birthday nails that I actually wore last year (because heaven forbid I actually edit nails in time to post them within a week of painting them).
Colors: ~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White ~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black ~ Pink: Revlon – Bubbly ~ Orange: Zoya – Thandie ~ Yellow: OPI – Never a Dulles Moment ~ Green: Zoya – Tilda ~ Blue: Zoya – Yummy ~ Purple: Zoya – Malia ~ Gold: Zoya – Ziv ~ Gold holo: FUN Lacquer – Million Dollar Dream ~ Stamp: Nicole Diary – 156
Today’s manicure was approached with the thought: what would Claire Estelle do? She has stopped posting, but back in the day she had the BEST rainbow neons, glitters, and random bits of color. I browsed her IG for a bit (not that I don’t already have most of her posts favorited, because again, rainbows) and settled on this idea! It took some effort but wow was it ever glittery! I started with a pinwheel stamping rainbow (basically going clockwise around from pink through to purple) and gradiented a different orientation of that same pinwheel on each nail. The end result was a somewhat random looking array of rainbow colors. I then added the black stamp, the gold through the line at the middle (both a simple glittery gold and then a chunky gold holo on top), and finally some black dots with gold centers. Voila! Hope you enjoyed…and stay tuned for more rainbows!!!
Ok, I like this. Partially its because I know how I created it, and partially just cause it honestly looks cool. This entire design was free-handed: I thought about how long it would take to make all of these various intersecting lines with striping tape and just noped out of it. The end result, despite being freehand, looks pretty crisp to me!
Really, I wanted to play with one of my new polishes. This is three thin (I could have gotten away with two thicker) coats of Odette by Cadillacquer. I am currently having a mild love affair with shades of grey (did this mani give it away?), and this one is a stunner. Odette is a light grey with silver shimmer, small silver glitter, and larger silver hexes. I think there might even be some scattered holo in there. Overall, the effect is subtle but absolutely stunning. The glitter is easy to get out and does not need placement.
Of course when I painted these I did the whole thing then top-coated…and realized that I absolutely should not have top coated after adding textured polish if I wanted to retain the texture! So I re-added another layer of textured polish after top coat. Ooops. Luckily you really cannot tell at the end, but multiple layers of textured polish were a pain to remove!
Happy new year! And happy birthday to my middle sister :-).
The start of every new year means some top 10 posts, so here are my top 10 favorite nail art designs from the last year! I also scoured through IG for ones with the most likes, and there was ~50% correlation. So I am (as usual) ignoring IG and posting what I like instead. Let me know which was your favorite!
I adore this design. I will probably try to do something similar again with a different foreground because this was awesome. I was inspired by @alittlegreenpolishbottle who took her inspiration from a watercolor by @artbysinch. I actually went and watched the making of the watercolor to have an inkling of how to paint this. I had intended to start with a black background, sponge on white, and then sponge (neon) color over the white…but the idea was watercolor! So instead I started with a white base, loosely sponged on some very bright colors, and then added the black for the sky. The last step was the foreground (mountains and trees) and the white/grey highlights in the mountains. It took a few hours but I think it was worth it!
Colors: ~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White ~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black ~ Grey: WOW – #333 ~ Holo glitter: China Glaze – Fairy Dust ~ Pink: Zoya – Morgan ~ Orange: Zoya – Thandie ~ Yellow: WOW – #301 ~ Green: KBShimmer – Race Against Slime ~ Blue: Zoya – Yummy ~ Indigo: Zoya – Danielle ~ Violet: Zoya – Margo
Honestly, I think picking bright colors/neons for the sunset was really what made this. It would not have worked nearly as well with more muted tones. Next time I will try for a few more fingers like my ring finger, the transition between the green/blue and the orange/pink/purple looks epic! I am posting this today in particular because I can think of no better nail art I’ve made in the past year that fits “inspired by art” the way this one does for the 31 day challenge. Enjoy!
I had been staring at this design on the stamping plate for SO LONG and I just had to use it. I had to. The biggest struggle was how to make the dragons stand out. The stamping plate has the dragons as part of the design, but I didn’t want them to be just black. So, I stamped over the black with multichrome (and then went back in and added more multichrome by hand because shifty dragons just make sense)!
I started with a bright green base. What you see here are two coats of OPI’s Did It On ‘Em. I hate the name, but the color is a beautiful pale grass green (a yellow-leaning bright pale green). I had been looking for a replacement for Essie The More The Merrier, and I think I have found it! Its a nice polish.
To make the base more grass-like, I dry-brushed on two more shades of green. When that was dry and top coated, I added my stamping decals, and then finished off with the multichrome dragons. I initially painted the blue sky directly on the nail after the stamp was finished, but I decided that was farrrrr to much effort and just turned it into part of the stamping decal after the first two nails 😀
Colors: ~ Pale green: OPI – Did It On ‘Em ~ Green: Zoya – Josie ~ Dark green: Zoya – Shawn ~ Blue: KBShimmer – I’d Rather be with Blue ~ Light grey: Zoya – Dove ~ Grey: WOW – #333 ~ Dark grey: Zoya – Evvie ~ Pale grey with black flecks: Cirque – Hatch ~ Red: KBShimmer – Chai-huahua ~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black ~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White ~ Brown: Zoya – Dea ~ Gold: Salon Perfect – Gold Leaf ~ Blue multichrome: ILNP – Birefringence ~ Stamp: Maniology – M035
Thats all for today, and fits the 31 day challenge of book, mostly because I love fantasy novels! I don’t have a specific one here, but there are so many who cares :-p. Hope you enjoyed!
This one was a lot of fun to make. Honestly, I just love painting scenes, and this was no different! I started with a nude base, painted on the yellow, orange, nude, red, and then freehanded the sand gradient. I think I left too much space for the sky, so I decided to add wispy clouds. Overall, I am quite happy with how this came out! The design was inspired by @ruthsnailart.
Colors: ~ Nude: Zoya – Chantal ~ Dark yellow: OPI – Never a Dulles Moment ~ Orange: OPI – Yank my Doodle ~ Red: KBShimmer – Chai-huahua (with a bit of Zoya Margo) ~ Dark brown: Zoya – Louise ~ Brown: Zoya – Dea ~ Light brown: Zoya – Flynn ~ Neon yellow: Love & Beauty – Yellow (over Serum No 5 – Dayglow) ~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
I did try to make the sun glow by using Dayglow over a bright yellow, but sadly I didn’t use it over a large enough area (or pile it on deep enough, I didn’t want a huge bump on my nail!). So no glowing sun. That said, I think this is considered a success! I think this is one of the last intense freehand scene I have painted in the past year? You guys will see another one during the #31daychallenge (yes, I plan those manicures ahead so I don’t get stuck playing catch-up), so stay tuned! But since all of my recent best manicures will go up in September for the, the next few weeks are going to be the sad rejects. Sorry!
You guys I am SO PROUD of this. This entire design is free-handed. And it came out pretty!! I just grabbed a neutral palette and got to work 😀 I am honestly shocked that the colors didn’t end up clashing, and that I was able to use the light pink over even the dark brown color without too much difficulty. Usually when I go for a set of colors that I don’t first spend time looking up online to ensure they will work together, I end up with at least one odd color out that looks silly. But these actually worked!
Colors: ~ Pastel pink: OPI – Be There in a Prosecco ~ Pink: Essie – Eternal Optomist ~ Dark pink-red: OPI – Yank my Doodle ~ Brown: Zoya – Dea
I cannot decide if I think overall I would have saved time by trying to use striping tape for all the lines, but I bet it was quicker to freehand. Especially with the overlapping pieces, trying to wait for each layer to dry to add tape would have been unbearable! Anyway, I hope you enjoyed!
Something about the pastel orange background just makes this manicure. I adore it, everyone else who saw it adored it, and it only took 2.5 hours (eep!) to make. Worth it! This scenic mani was also inspired by ruthsnailart, although I painted with polish not acrylic. That said, I think this is going to be the last use I get out of the pastel neon orange that I own, it is down to its last 1/2 inch of polish and is too gloopy to use! (Since I painted these some time ago I can say that my prediction was correct, and I now own a new almost-neon pastel orange instead).
Colors: ~ Orange: Maybelline – Bleached in Peach ~ Pink: Zoya – Jordan ~ Blue-grey: Essie – Rock the Boat ~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White ~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black ~ Light blue: Zoya – Blu ~ Blue: Zoya – Yummy ~ Dark blue: Zoya – Ling ~ Periwinkle: Nails Inc – Regents Place
My two biggest regrets with this admittedly awesome bit of art were 1) I cannot successfully make large circles (the sun is wonky) and 2) my palm tree stamp almost didn’t work! I also have NEW PALM TREES now so hopefully I can do something like this but also different (hah!) again soon! Hope you enjoyed this taste of summer 🙂
These nails are the BEST so I just needed to finish off the week with them! Omg. I wanted to make a rainbow reveal manicure but I also didn’t want to spend literal hours hand-painting every line of this particular stamp…so I came up with a great idea! I started with a somewhat pastel rainbow gradient on my nails. Then I painted the stamping decals (rainbow swirl center, white on the outside, and holo glitter topcoat on the lines) and stamped it straight onto my nails. The end result is super cool looking, if I do say so myself! I love the smooth background rainbow gradient, the bright vibrancy of the colors in the central swirls, and the holo glitter 😀 That said, I apparently need another blue creme (I only have like 9 of them, obviously that isn’t enough) because I used a shimmer for the blue color and it barely came through at all in the gradient!
Colors: ~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White ~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black ~ Holo top coat: China Glaze – Fairy Dust ~ Pink: Revlon – Bubbly ~ Orange: Formula X – Incandescent ~ Yellow: OPI – Never a Dulles Moment ~ Green: OPI – Did It On ‘Em ~ Teal: Zoya – Wednesday ~ Blue: KBShimmer – Id’ Rather Be with Blue ~ Periwinkle: Nails Inc – Regents Place ~ Purple: Zoya – Malia ~ Stamp: Moyra – 45 I Fill You
This ends out rainbow week! Hope you all enjoyed. And are prepared to see all three designs in my end-of-year roundup of favorite nail art posts :-p Happy friday!
For a few years now I have wanted to re-create one of the manicures that I tend to think of as my most iconic: the peeping rainbow design that is on all my blog icons. This time I used more colors and thinner lines…and while I do love it, if I am being honest, I think I liked the simplicity of the original (which was done in 2013, wow) better! The first time around I used 9 polishes. This time I used 10, but the colors were far more red/purple skewed! This batch is also much darker, originally I went with neons. I might have to try this AGAIN with my current neon collection!
Colors: ~ Pink: Zoya – Kelsey ~ Red: Zoya – Sookie ~ Orange: Zoya – Thandie ~ Yellow: OPI – Never a Dulles Moment ~ Green: Zoya – Josie ~ Teal: Zoya – Cecilia ~ Blue: Zoya – Ling ~ Indigo: Zoya – Danielle ~ Purple: Zoya – Landon ~ Dark pink: Zoya – Ciara ~ Black: Mentality – Rascal (wow, this is an incredibly old polish, before Mentality went off the deep end and tried to poison all of our nails)
This is also, I suppose, an ode to Zoya cremes? Probably 90% of my creme polishes are Zoya. I love their finish and they tend to play nice with my nails. I also don’t love how Zoya does most other finishes other than metallics, so cremes it is! I hope you enjoyed, and let me know if you preferred the original neon or the new darker peeping rainbow design!
It is time for rainbow week! Which is to say my birthday is today (wow I am really getting old…) and I love rainbows, and it is also pride month, so enjoy a whole WEEK of excellent rainbow manicures! This particular design is one I had been meaning to try for a while. I know the whole rainbow mermaid thing was big, and that I have missed that particular wave, but I cannot pass on pretty rainbows! The idea was for this to be pastel, and it certainly isn’t bright, but I would not call this pastel! I do love the white bits though. I tried something similar previously with “Scales of Many Colors“, but the scales were tiny and if I’m honest my stamping wasn’t up to par. Also, looking at the finished product, I should have gone with my gut and used green not teal, but my inspiration from Nails4Cocktails used teal!
Colors: ~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White ~ Purple: Zoya – Malia ~ Blue: Zoya – Rocky ~ Teal: Emily de Molly – Glee Ridden ~ Yellow: WOW – #301 ~ Orange: Forumla X – Incandescent ~ Pink: Sinful Colors – Pink Forever ~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black ~ Flakies: Picture Polish – Festival ~ Stamp: BC – 04
So, happy birthday to me! And happy rainbows. And hopefully just overall happy. Which is going to be slightly challenging since the new interns start today at the hospital, and I imagine there are going to be SO MANY neurology consults! Ah well. Enjoy!
These were inspired by these excellently bright nails from Game ’n Gloss, which I found something like 5 years ago and STILL had not replicated! She calls them her “pin up talons” but all I see is Minnie Mouse! I decided not to make any of the telltale ears, just to make it slightly less obvious. These were really easy and I honestly love them. I debated going with a darker vampier red, but when I googled Minnie, it turns out she canonically wears an almost neon red dress? So neon it is!
Luckily, I recently purchased a neon red! This is three thin coats of LE199 by Emily de Molly. As all true neons do, it dried down semi-matte (aka rubber finish) and was slightly streaky on its own. It was honestly fully opaque in two coats but I didn’t like the streaky look…I forgot that adding top coat is magic! Silly me. I did not use a white base under this polish, it is just insanely bright on its own!
Colors: ~ Red: Emily de Molly – LE199 ~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White ~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
Part of the reason I love this design is how straight forward it is. Dots and some striping tape, voila! So what do you guys think, evocative of Minnie? Or should I have stayed with the pin-up/Rosie the riveter thoughts? 😀
This took hours to make, primarily because all of those tiny dots! I was inspired by @ruthsnailart to put this together. Her version has even tinier dots (omg) and honestly fewer flowers, but she also did hers in acrylic and mine is 100% polish so there are allowed to be differences! These took 4-5 hours to paint and honestly I couldn’t be happier. The shimmer in the sky, the variations of color in the sun and the grass and of course the flowers themselves. It was a LOT of fun wearing these!
The day I painted these my husband and I had just gone to home depot and bought a bunch of flowers to spruce up our garden including snapdragons and a rose bush, so I had to put them on my nails! I do love how this came out even if it took forever. I don’t think I have had as much time as I did the day I painted these in close to a year. Which is a bit sad, but also wow these were intricate! I am not going to list all the colors I used, there were 20+ of them. The green base is Josie by Zoya because I wanted a blue-toned green. There are a total of 4 greens, 5 pink, 4 purples, 3 yellows, 2 browns, 2 blues, and white. I think. If you have a specific question about a color, ask! But its like 80% zoya cremes :-p.
I hope you enjoyed these as much as I enjoyed painting them! I actually leave for a two week Hawaii vacation on Monday, so I will likely NOT be posting nails for the next two weeks. I may have some spotty time to do so but I doubt it. So, two week blog hiatus! I’ll be back at the end of April, see you guys then!
So I realize that is more of a description in the title than I typically give, but I don’t know what else to call this and I am PROUD of myself! I got Spot It Red and finally used it in a color combination that I WANTED to transfer to my nails! I had been playing around with it every week or so and the colors never came out how I wanted (of note: this was a year ago :-p). Then I just grabbed an entire set of complimentary colors and tried…voila! I guess the key is go as far from the other colors you pick as possible? Otherwise you just don’t get contrast. Also, I wish I had the white version not red, I bet that would add to contrast-ness!
Colors: ~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White (base coat) ~ Yellow: Spoiled – Mind Your Own Beeswax ~ Blue: Zoya – Ling ~ Grey: Zoya – Dove ~ Red: Dance Legend – Spot It Red
All I did for this was drip a bunch of polish onto the heads of three different stampers and then tilt them until I was happy. I let the decal dry and cut it into pieces. The ones on my pinky and middle finger come from one decal, my ring and pointer are a second decal, and my thumb got its own. I dripped the polish with yellow at the bottom, then blue, grey, and finally the red spotting polish. I used a LOT of the yellow polish, so I picked a polish I never use for actual nail art (in this case because it is just not opaque enough…and also I dislike yellow); honestly the fact that I picked a shimmer polish for the base ended up looking pretty cool! I now have two more dotted polishes (a nude and a blue) and this just reminds me I need to fiddle with them more. Hope you enjoyed!
A friend asked if I could make a red-based ocean manicure, and this is one of the two looks I came up with! I do love a challenge 😀 I named it after the way the ocean is always described in old greek literature as “wine dark”. I never really understood what that meant (and to be honest, I still don’t), but the red-to-dark-teal thing does look pretty! I started with a red creme base, then stamped in white. I then layered 1-4 coats of a teal jelly polish before adding silver dots and calling it done. It ended up remarkably elegant!
Colors: ~ Red: OPI – All I Want for Christmas (is OPI) ~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White ~ Teal jelly: Zoya – Frida ~ Silver: Revlon – Metallic ~ Stamp: BPX geometry – L020
Luckily for me, this fits with the challenge released by Whats Up Nails to create a Pond Mani (basically a jelly sandwich), so I figured I would post it now! It ended up looking really elegant and surprisingly simple, especially given that there are so darn many layers of polish (mostly teal jelly). Anyway, I hope you enjoyed! And if you read this far…what do YOU think about the phrase ‘wine dark sea’?
I love this! How cute is that snowman? And the reindeer might be *ahem* oversized but its still adorable. Its a reindeer-with-its-face-in-the-camera. Lets go with that. This is probably overall my favorite winter manicure from last year (yes, I post around a full year delayed. I do not have my life enough together to post just after I paint).
Colors: ~ Blue metallic: Zoya – Tart ~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White ~ Brown: Zoya – Flynn ~ Light brown: Zoya – Chantal ~ Dark brown: Zoya – Dea ~ Red glitter: KBShimmer – Ruby ~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black ~ Orange: Essie – Playing Koi ~ Green: Zoya – Tilda ~ Gold: Essie – Good as Gold ~ Red: OPI – All I Want For Christmas (is OPI) ~ Stamps: Nicole Diary – 120
Lots of colors and designs and I still cannot get over that snowman! Anyway, I hope you enjoyed! I am going to finish up with some winter/New Years manicures this week, and spend the early part of next week on my top 10 posts for both polishes and nail art. Hope you enjoyed!
This is one of the best designs I have made in a while, and it was for Halloween! Oh well, still worth it :-p. I saw these beautiful nails by @nails4cocktails and I just knew I had to recreate them! Sadly, I own none of the stamps that she does so it took me a lot longer to freehand everything, but it was very rewarding! I need to remember to do more freehand…when I have more time. These came out awesome and they only took a few (~2) hours!
Colors: ~ Yellow: KBShimmer – Orange you Glad I Didn’t Say Banana?| ~ Teal: Zoya – Rocky ~ Purple: Zoya – Danielle ~ Blue: Zoya – Ryan ~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black ~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White ~ Yellow jelly: Esmalta da Kelly – Yellow Soap Bubbles ~ Holo glitter: Wet n’ Wild – Kaleidoscope
Anyway, happy Halloween! I hope you all have safe and socially distant plans for tomorrow night, and that everyone gets to enjoy both candy AND not catching the plague :-p.
Well guys, I forgot to post yesterday like I meant to, but this post fits better with “inspired by nails you love” rather than “tutorial”, also it is the last day of the 31 day challenge. Also it is apparently my 8-year blogaversary (wow). Anyway, on to nails. I adore this manicure. This was fully inspired (read: copied) from Ruth’s Nail Art, only I managed the whole darn thing with polish and she used acrylics. This took hours to create but I do love the end result! It reminds me of the last time I went on an actual vacation (left the country) to visit Iceland almost a year and a half ago.
Colors: ~ Pastel purple: Zoya – Abby ~ Purple: L’oreal – Royalty Reinvented ~ Dark purple: Zoya – Danielle ~ Pastel blue: Zoya – Blu ~ Blue: Zoya – Yummy ~ Dark blue: Zoya – Ling ~ Pink: Love & Beauty – Pink ~ Grey: Zoya – Evvie ~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White ~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
The only thing not free-handed was the circle of the moon, which was ultimately painted over in a mixture of white and pale purple polish. Voila! Happy end of the 31 day challenge, and I hope you all enjoyed! Since this blog is probably only read by nail artists, I hope some of you participated as well! Some of my favorite nail art of the year pops up from other artists during this month :-D.
