Black Block on Blurple

This mani is almost cheating – I did this while on vacation so I didn’t take any non-iphone photos! Ergo the photos are easier to edit (for whatever reason my iPhone sunlight photos need a lot less color correction than my indoor photo camera, even if the details are better on that one). ANYWAY. Purple glittery goodness!

There isn’t much to say here. I used a fantastically sparkly polish and just stamped over it. The stamping plate was not quite thick enough to not be able to see the glitter through the black polish but I actually quite like it!

That’s all for today. Lets see if I can keep up this posting streak! My life gets a lot easier next week in terms of time, so I am hopeful :-p

Pink Along the Circle

I have no idea. I just started playing with things and ended up here? I wanted grey, red, and pink, and somehow wound up turning to this pattern.

I started with a light grey base and layered one coat of a glitter polish overtop, to give it some flakies. I then stamped, and dotted the rest of the pattern. The only really fun part of this design is that I mixed red and white and just swirled them together, so the dot color is variegated.

That’s it for today! A bit of an odd design with a bit of an odd collection of colors, but overall not terrible :-p.

This manicure makes me happy and sad, which is unusual for something as simple as nail art! But looking at these, as much as I hate my nail length, I like how they ended up!

Once they were done, they reminded me of a stone so I went looking for something appropriate on the internet. Apparently, serpentine is a deep green stone with flecks of color and beige-gold veins. Perfect! I wish I could say I was TRYING to make a pretty rock, but I was mostly just having fun with flakies and stamps.

I wasn’t initially going to post these because I broke three nails (omg so sad) and my nails are painfully short and slightly misshapen as a result. However, I liked how the design came out, so I am posting them anyway! Maybe those of you with short nails will find inspiration.

That’s it for today! Hope the middle of the week isn’t terrible for anyone else (I am on call today so I left at 6:30am and likely won’t be home until 11pm), but oh well!

Sapphire Divided

I bought this particular polish on a whim, mostly because I wanted another polish in this collection and felt like placing and order for a single polish was silly. Jokes on me though…I actually like this one even better than the one I initially wanted! That always seems to happen :-p

This is Sapphire by KBShimmer, from the birthstone collection (I also got Ruby…which I posted about back in December). I cannot resist polishes that are jewel toned, saturated with metallic silver shards, and have holo in them. I now own 5!!! Sapphire is probably the darkest and most pigmented one in my collection though, since the other three non-KBShimmer ones are gold/silver/rose gold in tone.

This polish took two thin coats to cover (I probably could have gotten away with one if I applied it thicker). It dries down remarkably smoothly given all the glitter in it as well! The best part: removal wasn’t even that difficult! Maybe it’s because the glitter is in shards rather than hex shapes, and so catches my removing pad better? I don’t know why, but I am grateful! Regardless, Sapphire is a beautiful deep blue-jean/sapphire blue. I should have taken a photo with my  sapphire engagement ring! Whoops. Either way, it is stunning.

I am a bit sad that I added the rhinestones before top coat though, they always go from hexagonal and shiny to looking matte with regular top coat. I think I’ve finally figured out a work-around for this problem, but since I actually painted these back in October I wasn’t thinking too deeply about it a week before the wedding. Whoops!

I didn’t want to cover too much of the polish with a design…so I turned to my best pretty-but-minimal stamping plate (EdM 03) and just picked one. Ta-da! Hope you enjoyed!

Blue! And teal! I am sooo glad I wrote down all the names of the polishes that I used when I made this, because there is no way I would remember them now.

This was the base of the mani that I used for my pshiiit-inspired design from Nail Art Fashion Week. As I was putting together the teal an blue splotches and glitter and flakies I really liked how it looked…so I took some photos! I usually only do that if I’m afraid that I’ll mess up the final result and an intermediate step looks good…in this case it gets it own post!

So anyway, lots of teal. I used the stamper smush (technical term) method to get the colors on. It worked great this time, but I’ve actually tried it again since and it looked awful. Some colors work and some don’t I guess!

Also, adding Sparkling Garbage to the top of ANYTHING makes it magic. My friends and I made some dragon eggs (more about that later) a week ago and we ended up topping a dark green metallic with Sparkling Garbage…it was magic.

Splotches and Chevrons

Today’s prompt for Nail Art Fashion Week 2016 was “style icon.” Now, anyone who knows me knows I have 0 style sense (if it fits and has some type of glitter or pattern on it, I’ll wear it), and that I don’t care to get one. I wear sneakers with skirts and everyone else can just deal with it :-p

So, I had to think of something else for “style icon” and of course, I ended up with nail art style icon! Which means I had to mimic something by pshiiit…she is not my favorite nail art blogger, but its a toss-up between her and Very Emily who’s overall nail art style I like best! Everyone else (myself included) tends to vary widely in what we do for art…but pshiiit (and Emily) have a distinct feel to their nail art that I just love! In pshiiit’s case, it tends towards chevrons and pops of color or glitter.

Anyway, today’s nail art was inspired by pshiiit, so here we go! Lots of teal, some glitter, and some chevrons. And also a funny title because I couldn’t think of anything else.

Hope you enjoyed! Technically NAFW2016 goes through Sunday, but I never post on weekends AND I know nothing about the Fall 2016 collection (nor do I care that much. Fashion is wayyyy beyond me) so this is it!

Multichrome Swoops

ALL THE MULTICOLOR CHANGING THINGS IN ONE MANI. This manicure was insane. I just gave up capturing it completely because that was NOT going to happen.

I started with one of the ILNP multichromes, so we already had pink-gold-green. Then I added a multichrome flakie topper that had the same basic color shift, but due to the nature of flakies shifted at random angles with relation to the nail. And THEN I stamped on the whole concoction. It was epic.

I tried to capture the pink-to-green shift, and also get you guys to see how the flakies played off the other colors. I don’t know that I succeeded but the photo is cool!

~ Magenta multichrome: ILNP – Masquerade
~ Flakie topper: LynB Designs – Here on Earth
~ Stamp: EdM – 03

Unfortunately, these colors were making my camera spazz, so some of the nail bed colors look a bit funny. I tried to color correct!

Hope you enjoyed! And happy almost New Years!

Pond Ripples

The application that I write my posts on needs to start behaving. I wrote a whole post (again) today and just went and disappeared! Ugh. Today’s prompt was “travel.” I thought about palm trees, but that was too easy. Then my new stamping plates arrived!!! Llarowe was having a sale, and I just had to get some of the Emily de Molly stamping plates, because they are stunning and I’ve never seen anything like them (well, ok, maybe Messy Mansion has some, and MoYou but I don’t own any of them).

This particular design caught my eye, because it looked like ripples in water, so I decided to turn it into a pond! That technically counts as travel since there are no ponds near me :-p. Anyway, the stamp rather failed…which is to say I used one of my newer black polishes. It turns out (and I only went looking AFTER I finished this mani) that stamps with super-fine lines like this need special stamping polish. I don’t own special stamping polish, but I do own some old mostly empty bottles of black and white that I use to stamp! So I’ll try that next time.

I did practice this stamp the day after I did this mani, and it works great on paper…with the aforementioned thick black polish. Oops :-(. I was really disappointed with how this came out, because the stamp was stunning and the base was awesome and it just didn’t come together how I wanted! Oh well.

~ Blue metallic: Zoya – Tart
~ Blue flakie: Zoya – Maisie

Anyway, the stamp is out of stock right now (usually it’s here) but some of the others are still on sale. No, I was not asked to review this (I wish!) but its cool enough that I’m sharing the link anyway :-p Enjoy!

Celestial Matrix

I’m back! But this is still a scheduled post because I am seriously jet lagged and there is no way I would have gotten up in enough time to post this and make it to work! Anyway, this is the other metallic flakie I ordered from LynB Designs, a pink-green-gold multichrome called Here on Earth.

Here on Earth is kinda awesome. I layered two thin coats over a dark blue creme, because while it looked good at one coat I wanted it super dense! I had no problems with the amount of suspension base, so maybe next time I’ll just do three coats on its own. This polish makes me drool…I had been lemming after Neon Rosebud from ILNP but I didn’t want to pay >$10, so this $5 polish makes me happy!

I knew exactly what I wanted to do over this…one of the Bundle Monster stamps has been having a staring contest with me from my polish desk (because I keep meaning to use it), so here we go! My ring finger is actually double stamped (gold then blue) because the gold didn’t quite take. I got a new gold stamping polish since my old Maybelline is well and truly dried. This one is a glitter rather than a metallic, which makes me a bit sad and there was a two-finger learning curve (middle and ring) before I figured out how to make it bright enough (pinky, pointer, thumb). I probably stamp in a weird order.

~ Blue: Maybelline – Midnight Swim
~ Multichrome glitter: LynB Designs – Here on Earth
~ Gold: Sally Hansen – Go For Gold

Now I want to try to double-stamp this using only cremes! And also use Here on Earth in every mani ever. Pink/green multichrome polishes might be my kryptonite! Assuming I got back safely, I should have a new post for you guys tomorrow. If I don’t, assume I am trapped in an airport somewhere, or severely jet lagged, so sorry in advance!

Geometric Light

Just before I knew I was going to get all the awesome crystalchrome flakies from Mentality, I placed an order with LynB Designs for some metallic flakies! I didn’t own any, and LynB was having a sale…while ILNP wasn’t.

The first one I picked up is called The Speed of Light, You Know. While I wish it had a shorter name (seriously, fitting some of these things onto my swatch sticks drives me crazy) the polish itself is stunning. It is a more-or-less eclectic rainbow mix of colors, with an emphasis on bright greens and blues. However, I also see orange, pink, purple, and some indigo flakes! I painted it over a dark red creme, and I think the combo works nicely.

There are soo many colors here that it is hard to tell if the polish shifts much! Regardless, I think it’s stunning. What you see her is one coat, and I managed to get a nice mix of tiny flakes, small flakes, and a few larger ones. No problems with consistency of the polish!

~ Red: OPI – Visions of Love
~ Multichrome glitter: LynB Designs – The Speed of Light, You Know
~ White: Zoya – Purity
~ Stamp: Bundle Monster – 610

I dithered for a while deciding what to put on these for art, but I spotted one of the Bundle Monster stamps that I’ve never used before and something about the cosmic name of this polish…so we got stars and swirls!

Hope you enjoyed! I got this polish on sale for $5, and I don’t think there is still a sale. But even so, it is much cheaper than ILNP and I like it!

Metallic Mish-Mash

I had no idea what to do with this…because I put the last of the Mentality crystalchromes on my nails and just lost it. So this is basically inspired by the polish itself, and my desire to cover it as little as possible!

This is one coat of Panorama. ONE COAT. You guys. Holy crap. Remember how I told you all to wait before you bought any of these polishes (if you have $20 to spend on a polish…yes, I know, but LOOK AT IT!)? This is why. Because Panorama makes me explode a little inside! Rainbows!

I absolutely love the size of the flakies in this polish…I just bought another rainbow multichrome flakie glitter topper (wow, that is a mouthful), and the flakes are so much smaller…it’s fun, but different (you’ll see it in a few weeks? Maybe?).

As I said, I just went to town here. I initially wanted to add flowers to half my nails (like what is on my pointer) but I decided to just go with random patterns!

~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black

Hope you enjoyed! If you want to pick up Panorama (or any of the others…but really, Panorama) you can find her at the Mentality Shop for $20.75. Although, I wouldn’t blame you if you wanted one of the others…this one just blows my mind but I am a sucker for rainbows!

Golden Curls

Lots of things going on today! A golden water decal from the Born Pretty Store and another crystalchrome by Mentality! The design for this mani was inspired by Tartofraises.

The beautiful golden glitter here is one coat of Sideshow over a dark green creme. I think out of all the crystalchromes, Sideshow might be the most “useful”…which is to say it is a super versatile gold-to-green glitter that shines almost orange in some lights!

I think Sideshow could be opaque in 3 coats like the others, I just didn’t test it!

The decal on my ring finger is from the Born Pretty Store, and I love it. I honestly have no idea if it is supposed to be something specific, to me it just looks like a curly arabesque! The gold is super bright (which is to say it covers dark green without a problem).

~ Green: Sinful Colors – Last Chance

You can find Sideshow at the Mentality Store for $20.75, and the golden decal from the Born Pretty Store for $1.99 (plus 10% with my code LY5X31). Enjoy!

Funhouse Goldfish

Lots of things for review today! I have a crystalchrome flakie by Mentality (named Funhouse) and goldfish framework stickers from the Born Pretty Store! I knew I wanted to layer the green flakie over a similar-colored base, so I went for a pale mint. It ended up looking a bit like a shallow tropical pool, so I grabbed the goldfish decals and went to town!

Much like the other crystalchrome flakies, Funhouse is a fairly dense glitter topper that would be opaque in three-ish coats, but is shown here in one coat. Funhouse is predominately an aqua-green glitter, that shifts golden green-green-aqua-purple at sharper angles. I love it.

The complicated part of this mani (because adding awesome glitter to a base is easy) was the fish. The Born Pretty Store supplied me with golden goldfish outline decals (check out the link to see what I mean), that you get to paint around and in to create a goldfish with a gold outline. I pulled out four polishes (purples/reds/oranges) and tried to create a cool looking fish!

Honestly, my fish don’t look quite as nice as the demo one on the Born Pretty Store website. Next time around, I’m going to basically make my own sheer jelly and use that so more of the gold from the decal outline is preserved.

Embarrassingly, I actually thought the outlines were water decals and tried to soak them off their white sheet in water….they are stickers. Very thin stickers (which makes them ideal for art and I really liked the thinness) but stickers all the same. Whoops!

~ Dark red: OPI – All I Want For Christmas (is OPI)

On a positive note, with these fish I did finally a use for my Julep jelly polishes! I don’t much care for them usually since they take 3 thick coats to be opaque on their own, and the bubble on my nails…but using them in fish totally works! To pick up the beautiful shifting Funhouse, head over to the Mentality Shop. For the goldfish decals, check out the Born Pretty Store (there are $2.21, with an additional 10% off if you use the code LY5X31). Enjoy!

Chromatic Gradient

Glitter and gradients galore! This is the first mani on my poor nubbins that I actually liked. When I got sent the crystalchrome flakies to review from Mentality, I knew I needed to put the blue one (Carousel) over black and play with the others.

Which is to say, this is the first mani I did with these glittery flakies! So today you get to see 3 out of the 5, although the other two will each get their own post.

Introducing Carousel, a ceramic/glass hybrid flakie topper that looks purple or blue depending on what you put it over! Shown here is one coat over a black creme. The flakie density is wonderful, and like the others in this collection would build to opacity in three coats.

I should probably also mention finish and removal. These flakies sit flat (all the ones from this collection do) but you will need to add top coat for a smooth finish. Removal is somewhere between a creme and a glitter…it does come off with acetone, but you need to scrub a little.

Once Carousel was on, I decided to do a blue-green-gold gradient using two of the other flakies in the collection. I just used the polish brushes and went to town. This mani took no time at all but was super glittery!

~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ Blue flakie: Mentality – Carousel
~ Green flakie: Mentality – Funhouse
~ Gold flakie: Mentality – Sideshow

Each flakie polish is $20.75 due to the cost of the pigment. You can find them at the Mentality Shop. Happy polishing!

Shifting Butterflies

I promised you guys butterflies today, so here we go! I absolutely love this mani…mostly because I love everything butterfly-oriented, but also because MULTICHROME and FLAKIES! Best combo ever 😀

I can’t take full credit for this…I got the idea from Very Emily because she comes up with some awesome ideas! She also has swatched just about every mutlichrome ever and I wish I had her nail polish life!

This the 3rd? 4th? time I’ve done butterfly wing nails, but its the first time I’ve done them from the free edge rather than the cuticle bed. I don’t like it as much, but it was worth trying!

I hope you enjoyed! Color shifts are the best :-D. The rest of this week is going to be some crazy mix of striping tape, free hand art, glitter…and who knows. I need to get stuff written!

Dotted and Flecked

Eeep. I went overboard. This mani started beautifully…blue metallic polish with multi-colored flakies on top. Then I tried to stamp. And mattify. And…yah. It looks odd.

You can honestly tell how much I like any given manicure by how many photos of it I end up posting. I don’t like this one. I was hard-pressed to find even one photo that I thought was worthy of the blog, but so be it. In the future, I need to keep things simpler! I think its the flakies…I want to play with them but they always end up looking so busy!

~ Blue: Zoya – Tart

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this more than I did! I still need to find a use for the flakies that doesn’t overwhelm them. Blargh!

Racing Stripe Flakie

Today’s them in the OMD2 Challenge was “negative space.” This prompt had me worried, since my nails are kinda…um…stained. And pitted. And really there is a reason I always wear manicures! But I found a solution, one that exposes minimal nail surface and I had been dying to try…racing stripes!

The thought here is that you have two stripes of color up the side, something different in the middle, and a bit of exposed nail between them. I cheated a bit and used a nude shimmer over my naked nail, and then striping tape to delineate the sections. My initial plane was just to use my rainbow flakie, but it wasn’t dense enough after 3 rather substantial brush-overs, so I added my blue/green flakie as well.

Although many of the designs I see popping up over the internet matte this particular design, I actually rather like the shiny version better! I did matte it just in case, but still. That being said…my matte coat is dead. It is a dense thick gloppy mess. I bought a new one (it is on my pinky) but it doesn’t mattifying nearly as much as my dearly beloved and departed Matte-ly In Love polish. Does anyone have any matte top coat suggestions? I need a new one!

Over The top

This manicure is the tale of two dresses and nails gone wrong trying to match both. I had a beautiful red dress, and an equally beautiful blue one. I also had silver jewelry, a desire to use a flakie polish, and a need to create a french design for the OMD2 challenge. I should have known it was too much!

Blue nails, even holographic blue nails, look quite pretty with flakies over top. A silver deep-cut french looks ok. Red dots and a red tip highlight just look ridiculous. Oops.

  • Blue: A England – Tristam
  • Flakie: piCture pOlish – Festival
  • Silver: A England – Excalibur
  • Red: China Glaze – Ruby Red Pumps

You win some, you lose some! There is no way to put all of the things I wanted onto my nails and have them come out looking presentable. And I promise, the nail art gets better starting tomorrow!

Stained Glass

This manicure was inspired by a number of ‘stained glass’ type manis I had been seeing on pinterest. Unfortunately  I had neither the time nor the stamp necessary to recreate the ones I had found…so this is a pale imitation. I will try again when I have more time to freehand!

That being said, the star polish here is STUNNING. May I present, for your viewing pleasure, Festival by piCture pOlish. Oh man. SO MANY FLAKIES! I love flakie glitter, but I only own one other (Maisie by Zoya) and this is just amazing.

Blue, green, orange, teal, pink, gold….I don’t even know how many colors are in this! It did need 3 coats to get good coverage, but they were very thin coats and they dried fast. So many colors!

The look I was going for can be seen here. I ended up using bundle monster plate 206, which has thicker lines that I would have liked. The result is cool looking, but does not look like stained glass! Next time, thinner lines. I also need to see what this looks like mattified!

  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black

  • White: Zoya – Purity

If any of you noticed my little…mistake…I’m sorry. Yes, my pinky stamp is upside-down. It was late.    O.o

Green Glades

I keep seeing flakie polishes, and loving them. And yet, I almost never remember to use my personal flakie! I pulled out Zoya Maisie, matched her up with a similar color (to simulate the flakie-in-polish rather than flakie-as-topcoat appearance) and got to work.

Although the green flakies almost disappear into the greenish base, I actually really love this look. It is far more subtle than most of what I’ve tried, but its cool! This is also the first time I have NOT matted a flakie mani.

I then stamped over the design with BM 210, another stamp I’ve been dying to use! It transferred great. I tried stamping with a wet n’ wild metallic polish, but it didn’t work. So I used A England. It is a pity they are so expensive, the polish is AMAZING for stamping!

I’m really pleased with how this came out. Maybe next time I’ll try to make the stamps uniform across my nails, rather then reversing it and messing around. But I was feeling whimsical!
