Wild Ripples

Super straightforward but still pretty! Mostly because putting awesome teal flakies over slightly darker teal-blue polish is a recipe for nail happiness ūüôā

IMG_1929

Unfortunately I broke a nail prior to painting these, so my free edge is curved. I briefly¬†thought¬†about cutting my nails shorter but flat‚Ķbut to cut them flat would¬†have¬†been to make them VERY short and I didn’t relish that thought! So, here we are.

Square Scales

Beautiful polish and simple art! I do wish I had more stamps that actually looked like scales, I don’t think this stamp does this polish justice! Oh well, still came out pretty :-p

IMG_1286

What you see here are three coats of Princess of the Underworld by Rogue Lacquer from PPP Jan 2019. This polish is stunning! It appears to be a green jelly-based polish with a very strong red-gold-green shimmer, filled with large and small iridescent flakies that shift orange-gold-green. The overall appearance is a red shimmer on a murky green base with flashes of gold. Again, stunning. Also super easy to control!

IMG_1241

It is a bit harder to see with all the rose gold bits on my nails after stamping, but the underlying polish did have a really stunning shimmer/shift to it that was apparent in low light and sunlight. It might have been closer to armor than scales!

That’s it for today! I do feel the need to prepare you all, Friday’s post is significantly less awesome. I tried something, and it failed :-p

Orange Snake

This is a bit of an odd manicure. I wanted to show of my new thermal a polish, but I may have gone a little overboard? The design was cool, but the thermal polish is hardly the star of the show with so much else going on!

IMG_0857

What you see here are three thin coats of POP Polish Leaves of Gold. This polish is overwhelmingly filled with flakies. Tons of flakies. Swimming in them. The polish color is a bright yellow (almost a green) when warm, which turns into a bright orange-red when cool. The flakies show up more distinctly in the yellow state but are obviously also very visible when orange. The color shift was easy, but not as dramatic as I expected despite the colors being quite different! For me, the polish mostly sat in a pale-orange state.

IMG_0808

The design was made by stamping with the snake stamp, and then grabbing a red jelly polish and just coloring in part of the design. There is a part of me that wishes I had also added some gold, but that would have been even MORE distracting!

Hope you enjoyed! I think this should be the last thermal post till Fall, there isn’t much color shifting happening in the summer!

Cracked Garnet

I couldn’t decide if this mani reminded me more of golden tree branches (which was the intention) or a broken gemstone (which is equally cool), so I went with gemstone! Either way, these nails ended up beautifully sparkly.

IMG_2416

I seldom reach for my pure flakie top coats. Honestly, I feel like they overwhelm the color under them (which I suppose is the point) but I feel bad covering up my base color! In this case I used a purple I don’t like much, which made me feel overall better for the focus being on the flakies :-p

Happy Friday, and I hope you enjoyed! Its >90 degrees in St Louis right now, and absolutely miserable with humidity. I don’t understand this weather, it was in the 40s less than a week ago!

Golden Highlights

Kinda 1920s, yah? Honestly, if I had been thinking about it more I would have reversed the stamps, I like the idea of the spread fan shape coming from my free edge better, but too late! Also, my gold stamping polish has official run out and I will need more.

IMG_0196

Honestly, I just wanted to play with 212 again, it is a¬†subtle¬†yet pretty polish, and one of the first I ever bought when I got into nail polish in 2012. My obsession with various types and finishes of polishes have¬†varied¬†over the years, and the dark vampy jellies with subtle shimmer and flakies (ok, I think in that particular family I really only own two polishes) don’t get worn very much at all! So here is some love, 212.

Top 10 Polishes of 2018

Time for a top 10 post! Every year I do two of them: my favorite 10 new polishes of that year (some of which will be new to me but have existed for a while, and this year about half of which are from the Polish Pickup Pack because that is where I keep getting new polish), and a second post that is my top 10 favorite nail art from this blog in 2018! I always look forward to other bloggers top 10s as well, so I know which polishes to buy! Here we go:

10. Zoya – Isadora
I think this is the only Zoya polish on the list, but it was close between this and Kelsey (a bright pink that I have used a bunch in nail art but only once by itself) but really I felt that I wanted to reward Zoya for making more beautiful metallics. I own a lot of purple metallics, and Isadora is just so pretty!
IMG_8586

9. Polished for Days – From the Land of Oz
I have worn this polish probably 4 times since I got it from the Polish Pickup Pack, which given just how many polishes I own is really impressive! It is purple, blue, teal, and made of flakies, just how I like it! The colors and finish comes together nicely, and Polished for Days appears to make the best flakie suspension polishes. I think off all the new brands I discovered this year, PfD might be my favorite! I keep stalking their website waiting for a sale :-p
IMG_7659

8. Ever After – Playing with Fire
This is another find from Polish Pickup, and it is a beauty. I wish I wasn’t stuck in residency so that I could wear this more frequently! I had been searching for a black-with-rainbows and had been disappointed in holo (because it never looks as rainbow as I’d like in a black base), glitter (too darn hard to remove), and settled on flakies…and this is just perfect. Technically the base is a very dark blue but I just cannot get over the combination of flakies. It is a perfect rainbow in a bottle.
IMG_6105

7. Painted Polish – Just One Look
Is this prettier than #8 and #9 on my list? No. But is it cool looking AND can I wear it to the hospital? Yes. So this pale periwinkle with medium and small holo glitters takes 7th place. This is yet another Polish Pickup shade (are you guys sensing a theme here?) but I know other brands make similar colors and finishes. I happen to like it because it is a stunning color, work appropriate, and glittery to boot!
IMG_3860

6. ILNP – Downpour
This polish. I got 4 new dark blue/teal holographic polishes this year and this one takes the cake. I have been wearing this on my toes since I got it and I regret nothing. Downpour has it all: dark blue, holo shards and glitters, and a metallic finish that makes it glow. That inner glow is really what sets it apart from the other of my new blue holos. I was on the fence when I first received it, but it has quickly grown to be the blue I reach for! The only caveat is that it takes 3 coats rather than 2.
IMG_5773

5. ILNP – Fired Up
The next on the list is also an ILNP polish, this time Fired Up. Last year, Rosewater made my top 10, and Fired Up is the orange sister to Rosewaters pink. I love them both! This polish is just so darn glittery and shimmery, but somehow still wearable. It just makes me happy.
IMG_6699

4. CbL – Frohe Feiertage!
If we are being honest Frohe Feiertage! and Fired Up are very similar. The difference is Frohe Feiertage! has a gold base and is a tad more subtle (aka more wearable in the hospital). I have worn this polish 3-4 times as well. It was my first (and thus far only) CbL but I can see why everyone loves the finish on these polishes! It was also a Polish Pickup buy.
IMG_5025

3. Born Pretty – Astral Realm
I think this is the first time a Born Pretty polish has made my top 10 list? And in the top 3 at that! This is a polish I was sent to review and I fell completely in love. I have ok luck with magnetic polishes, and had been lusting after a magnetic multichrome when I got this. And it just. Works. Its amazing. Even my old many-straight-parallel-lines magnet, which usually looks like a blurry mess, worked like a charm. Yes, this polish requires a black base. Yes it is in a small bottle. No I don’t care, if all magnetics were all this pretty I would never buy anything else!
IMG_1184

2. Emily de Molly – Traverse the Skies
I meant to put this polish on the top 10 LAST year but forgot that I hadn’t posted the nail art it went with! Regardless, this polish is absolutely stunning and has become my platonic ideal of what a shimmer with flakie shards should look like. I love it. If you don’t own this polish and like blue, purple, silver, or just pretty looking nails in general, go buy it. You won’t regret it.
IMG_9848

1. Polished for Days – Grey Opal
This polish made #1 by dint of being stunning, elegant, work-appropriate, and easy to remove despite its flakie burden. Kudos to Polished for Days! Unfortunately this beauty was another Polish Pickup special, but PfD makes a lot of similarly finished and colored polishes on their website. This polish was opaque in two coats, had perfect control on the brush, and was just overall wonderful to work with and wear.
IMG_5943

Thats my top 10 for the year! Moral: Polished for Days is amazing, join the Polish Pickup Pack if you haven’t already, and I am really into nude shimmers and blurples this year! What were your favorite polishes this year that I should invest in?

Swirling Flakes on Grey

I just keep wearing this polish! Grey Opal might be my favorite buy from Polish Pickup Pack (its from probably a year ago at this point), because it is amazingly shimmery and flakie-y, but it still just subtle enough to totally get away with in the hospital!

IMG_2830

I also finally used up my bottle of the original Excalibur (my go-to silver polish for just about anything), and about a year ago bought a replacement (this is the best stamping silver ever), but now it is “Renaissance” because they replaced Excalibur with some weird gold/silver flake combo which, while pretty, does not at ALL serve the purpose of the original bottle. That said, this formula is still fantastic ūüėÄ

Super simple, but quite pretty! And work-appropriate as long as no one notices all the colors hidden in the flakies. Win for everyone! Hope you enjoyed and happy Friday ūüôā

Stained Glass

I’ve been doing so much stamping (mostly due to lack of time) that I haven’t been using many of my inspiration photos recently! This is another stamping day, but this one comes with inspiration, and is super glittery.

IMG_6184

Years ago, I saw this stained glass mani at Emily de Molly and I died inside. I wanted the polish and the stamp and the whole thing. I finally bought the stamping plate, and thanks to the Polish Pickup Pack, I owned the perfect polish. This mani makes me so happy!

IMG_8697

What you see here are three thin coats of Playing With Fire, which is a black opal inspired polish by Ever After. It is stunning! Black jelly base loaded with orange, red and a few green color-shifting flakes as well as tiny blue holographic hex glitters and even tinier green microglitter squares. I hope this polish is easier to take off than it looks, because it looks like a glitterbomb, but all the glitter is flakies!

IMG_6105

Unfortunately, the polish is no longer available since it was one of the January polish pickup options, but since I’ve been buying 1-3 polishes per month with polish pickup, I have no shortage of incredible new polishes to play with!

Psychedelic Flowers

Sorry you guys! My posting schedule¬†remains wonky‚Ķjust¬†because¬†I haven’t edited any photos yet! I’ll try to get back on track. In the¬†meanwhile, enjoy this really weird kinda floral mani¬†with a¬†really pretty base!

IMG_1994

I don’t really know what I was thinking with this¬†design. The polish I used as a base is super pretty but very busy, so I¬†decided¬†to throw three metallics on top of it? Not one of my best ideas.

IMG_7735

Anyway, the base here is three thin coats of From the Land of Oz by Polished for Days. Unfortunately, my camera is not capturing the lavender-purple base of this polish, the camera likes to think it is more blue. I only used three coats for more glitter depth, it was full coverage in two. This polish is from Polish Pickup, so isn’t available anymore‚Ķbut if you aren’t yet you should all go join PPU! This coming month is a revival of past favorites and a LOT of my very favorites are coming back, so if you missed something this would be a great time to pick it up!

So, that’s that! Again, sorry for the odd posing schedule, I’ll see what I can do about getting myself edited up!

Foiled Foliage

I think I am pun-y! Well, it isn’t a pun, the title is basically just alliteration but it still makes me happy. As does this mani! It is technically still autumn‚Ķand currently the ground in Philly is completely covered in leaves. It is pretty, crunchy, and utterly ridiculous. When I walk outside I feel like I am eating leaves!

IMG_3470

The base polish here is intended, I think, as a topper…but I wanted to make it opaque! This is three coats of Raging Fire by Born Pretty over one thin coat of a dark red base. Honestly, this polish was almost completely opaque at two coats! The final coat was mostly for my pinky, which I had painted more sparsely than the others. Despite looking uneven, the glitter was actually quite smooth after one coat of top coat. That said, the polish itself is thick and a bit goopy…good for dense flakie placement but it would have been difficult to get a light coat of polish.

IMG_3411

The flakies themselves shift from pink/red to orange/copper to gold and emerald green at sharp angles. Since the flakes are at slightly different angles to each other, it is actually easy to get the whole color shift! It was mesmerizing.

IMG_8033

I then made stamping decals using a left design from plate Floral BPX-L018 with Essie Good as Gold and colored in between the leaves with OPI Visions of Love. It looks quite fun and glittery! I know I could have instead just painted the leaves of the stamping decal with flakies…but this was so much more fun :-p

IMG_3462

And, surprisingly, this was pretty easy to remove! Since they are flakies and not true glitter, they dissolve with acetone. The dark red was more painful since the color tends to stain my cuticles. If you want to pick up this flakie polish for yourself, head over to the Born Pretty Store, where you can find it on sale for $3.69. Enjoy!

Flakie Overlay

I think the theme of this week is “things Eva matted.” However, unlike Monday’s post, I am really sad that this mani did not end up glossy!

IMG_2509

The design was¬†inspired by @kgrdnr, as many good things are. I mostly just wanted to use Ski Lodge by ILNP because it somehow found its way onto my desk. However, then I decided it wasn’t quite glittery enough, and I added some flakies over top. Voila!

IMG_2522

Despite being really simple, I think this came out rather awesome. I have missed working with dark greens (they are not an approved-of color in the hospital or on the interview trail), and holographic + flakie polishes are an awesome combination.

IMG_2617

~ Dark green creme: Sinful Colors – Last Chance
~ Dark green holo: ILNP – Ski Lodge
~ Green flakies: Lyn B Designs – The Speed of Light, you Know
~ Gold: Salon Perfect – Gold Leaf
~ Matte: KBShimmer – Oh Matte!

IMG_7770

Regardless, you can also see why I am sad I matted this! Usually I am all-for matted flakies, but I ended up removing some of the depth in the design and certainly in getting rid of the awesome holo inherent in Ski Lodge. Oops! I’ll likely try a similar design with a different color, and I just need to remember to keep it glossy ūüôā

Shattered Foil

Day one of the 31 Day Challenge: Red! These nails are a mix of red and black and I don’t even know what, but I figure that they count ūüôā

IMG_9090

Both the deep red polish that I used as a base and the flakies that I put on top of it are new. The flakies were sent to me from the Born Pretty Store for review, so here we go!

IMG_9122

The flakies themselves are these small¬†iridescent¬†shards with¬†irregular¬†boarders. Some are larger, and some are mostly just dust. The ones I that I got are primarily red,¬†but shift through gold and to a bright emerald green with little provocation. I applied these using regular polish. Basically, while your top coat is tacky (about 30 seconds after application of a thin coat, if you are using quick-dry top coat), gently pat on the shards using the tip of your finger (finger into the pot of flakies, and then onto¬†nye¬†nail). Repeat this step until the nail is as covered as you’d like it to be.¬†Of note: do not get your dipping finger wet (in water or polish) or you will pick up too many flakies and end up with a white iridescent patch (as on my pointer finger) rather than the colors you intended. Monolayer of flakies is best!

IMG_9062

The other new item here is my red base, an OPI polish that I picked up on sale from ULTA. This is two thin coats of Magala Wine, a beautiful dark pink-leaning red. In direct light is a deep pink, while in shade it is a burgundy red. I really like this color! It also applied really smoothly.

IMG_6644

Oddly, in direct like the flakies faded away, so I am glad I did the red-to-black gradient! In indirect light though you could barely see the base color, it was awesome. You can pick up the flakies from the Born Pretty Store for $2.59 for 0.2g.

Stay tuned for Day 2: Orange tomorrow!

Festooned Feathers

Friday begins the 31 Day Challenge! I have quite a bit of a back log (…most of which I will be clearing with this challenge), but I figured for today and Wednesday I should post a few of my older manis that I consider complete fails! So, have a peacock fail.

IMG_5699

As it turns out, every time I try to stamp peacock feathers, I end up disappointed! I really want to like these, but I just can’t quite get myself there ūüė¶ The background is just the WRONG shade and the colors of the feathers‚Ķmeh.

IMG_5716

I started with two coats of Charlotte by Zoya (one of the mini’s from a free thing a while back), and sponged on the flakies from Festival by Picture Polish. They don’t pop nearly enough! Also, they are impossible to clean out of cuticles.

IMG_6183

I then stamped on the peacock feather design from plate JQ-L20, using three of my favorite polishes: Tristam and Saint George by A England and Berry Good Looking by Cupcake Polish. Pretty color combo (I need to play with it more) but the feathers pop almost too much!

IMG_6186

Anyway, I tried and I did not succeed to make something feathery and fantastic. I think I might go back to hand-painting some feathers using these polishes‚Ķ.in the eventual future where I pretend I have free time to attempt something as time-consuming as freehanded feathers! *sigh*.¬†I did not enjoy these, so I won’t ask if you did! Stay tuned for an even WORSE fail on Wednesday! Then the good manis start, I promise.

Tri Tri Angle

I love how this came out! I had been waiting to use this stamp for months, and here we go :-D. Something about all the triangles and tiny lines just called to me.

IMG_9441

Unfortunately, I had a litttttle more trouble picking up the fine lines on the stamp than I anticipated, and I was in just enough of a rush to not have time to go back and redo any nails. Whoops!

IMG_3670

IMG_9468

It still came out looking pretty awesome. Shifty and triangle-y and edgy. Mutlichromes are the best chromes!

Skittles in Gold

Well, this was fun! I just picked up a new gold glittery polish from ILNP and got some stamping plates to review from the Born Pretty Store…and they arrived on the same day! Which means I just need to use them together.

IMG_0373

My inspiration for this manicure came from BankAnita, which is apparently a protected account but the pinterest pin is here. I don’t actually understand why someone would make their nail art blog not accessible to the wider community, oh well! But regardless, I used her concept as a launching point and ran with it.

IMG_0340

The new polish here is a delightful nude gold holographic with gold flakies called Clockwork by ILNP. It covered nicely in two coats, and dries smooth despite the ridiculous amount of glitter in it. ILNP lists it as a bronze and a beige, but it really is a nude-gold (I know, odd description). At some point soon I am going to need to do a comparison between my three ILNP UltraMetallics, but not for this mani! I love them all ūüôā

IMG_0334

The stamps are all from the Born Pretty Store, although there are two plates represented here. The water marble designs (middle and thumb) are from L005 while the lines on my pinky are from BP-X06. Everything picked up nicely and stamped well! I do wish there were a few more whole-nail designs on the water marble plate, because the few big ones are very widely spaced lines, and I personally prefer tighter ones. Oh well!

IMG_4049

The dots on my ring finger and the small pattern on my pointer were hand-painted‚ĶI actually have the water marble design that BankAnita used for her ring finger, but it is a true gold not a nude gold, and so when I went to grab mine I realized it wouldn’t match! I like the hand-dotted ones just as well though.

IMG_0361

If you want to pick up either of the two stamping plates I used here, head over to the Born Pretty Store and look around! The water marble plate (which for me is the new one) is on sale for $2.99. Have fun shopping ūüėÄ

Hallowed Halls

Something simple but glittery today! Also, I forgot to write this post ahead of time, so it is both going up later than usual and will be briefer than usual! The title is from Dear old Shiz from Wicked, for no reason but that I felt like it.

IMG_3345

This mani is a purple/green/grey mutlichrome base, and then some metallic flakie glitters! Well, and a cool lace stamp. The multichrome is 2 coats of Essie For the Twill of It, covered with one thin coat of LynB Here on Earth. Last time I used Here on Earth you couldn’t even see the base color, so I went lighter this time!

IMG_8337

The stamp is from BC plate 04, from Lady Queen Beauty. It, too, has lots of fun stamps on it! I’ve used it maybe 3 times in the two weeks I’ve owned it? I just picked this an as example for fun. I think this might be the least fun design on the plate if we’re being honest‚Ķlook at the nested triangle ones! And the seashells! And heart swirls! (Yah, ok, I like this plate).

Glitzy Gown

A bunch of my favorite nail art bloggers are doing a fashion week thing (Nail Art Fashion Week), so I figured I’d join in (for a few days at least!). The prompt for day #1 is “favorite fashion designer” which for me is a no-brainer‚Ķas I basically only know one fashion designer, Alexander McQueen!

IMG_2847

I went browsing through some google images of McQueen dresses, and stumbled on this one. It a wedding gown, but what caught my eye was that VEIL. Since I wanted to play with a new polish I got from the color4nails sale, I figured this would work nicely!

What you see here is two coats of Microcosm by Powder Perfect, a brand that I have never tried before! I love love love the polish brush on this (something I usually don’t comment about) although I did have to pull out a stray bristle before I could use it. The polish was pretty patchy with one coat, but with two it was perfect! I thought I would need a third but I was wrong.

IMG_6492

I don’t quite know how to describe Microcosm. Silver-grey holo glitter base with lots and lots of metallic multichrome flakies? Predominately purple/blue, but there are a whole bunch in here. It’s pretty awesome!

IMG_6604

To mimic the look of the McQueen dress, I grabbed a swirly lacy stamp (EdM – 17) and a white metallic polish and stamped away! I don’t think I would have paired a white with this polish without the inspiration prompt, but I like the result!

IMG_2845

Hope you enjoyed!

Wonky Flowers

As I mentioned yesterday, I really really should have waited for my base to dry!! I started with a dark purple creme and then added rainbow flakies. I keep forgetting that unlike my blue/green flakies (Maisie by Zoya) my rainbow flakies are in this really thick base that takes 2-3 coats to get a good glitter load! Thus the trouble began.

IMG_2071

I added top coat after adding my flakies in hopes that it would speed up the drying process. Then I had the awful experience (I think for only the third time in my nail art career) of stamping and having polish squash OUT THE SIDE of my nails! The top layer was dry but the middle layers were NOT. It was awful.

IMG_1634

I was so anguished that I just tried to salvage what I could. That is my only explanation for why my nails are patchy and the stamp didn’t fully transfer. I gave up. I had to wake up at 3am to catch a plane and I finished these at 8pm. It was a mess!
