Spring Stripes and Buds

Unsurprisingly, I painted these back at the beginning of spring, when it was still exciting to put flowers on my nails. Oh well! They are still cute, and came out oddly colorful 🙂

IMG_6566

These came about because I just wanted something fun a floral! I was going to use striping tape to make the lines, but the base took 4 coats (which reminds me of why I NEVER USE this polish, ugh) so I couldn’t use striping tape because my nails never dried. So, freehanded stripes! Pain in the butt…but not half bad. More of the story is that I have almost mastered straight lines? I think only one of these is my right hand, but I actually managed all these lines on BOTH hands.

IMG_6589

The only reason I find that amusing is that I recently discovered I switch off hands when doing a physical exam in the hospital…which the rest of my team was super impressed by! I’ve always been somewhat ambidextrous, but I think its only gotten stronger since I started painting my nails way back at the beginning of my PhD!

Ok, that went very off topic. Suffice to say, these ended up colorful, cute, and a bit strange! And Cala Lilly is a terrible polish that I should get rid of before I try to use it again and spend 2 hours waiting for my base color to dry.

Valentines Dotticure

I wasn’t sure if I was going to use this as my day-before-Valentine’s Day mani or not…because there are no hearts! But really, I didn’t paint any hearts this year, so have some pink and red and gold dots 😀

img_5257

This mani was inspired by @badgirlnails…which really just seems to be a trend for me right now. I think I accidentally browsed her last approximately three years worth of manis and pinned them all to my to-try folder on pinterest. And they are all somewhat simple (like, 1-1.5 hours of work, rather than 3 hours of work) so when I don’t want to stamp I just keep turing to them! I would say whoops, but I honestly like her nail art a bunch so I don’t feel too bad about continually turned to it for inspiration.

img_5193

Sadly, I haven’t actually edited the mani that includes the swatch of the base color I’ve used here, Cherish by Picture Polish. I’ll see if I can’t get posted next week or something! The nail art that went with it is a bit boring, but it is a pretty polish. So, stay tuned for that!

Regardless, happy almost Valentine’s Day! I hope you eat a lot of chocolates and your lives are filled with flowers. Personally, I love going to the grocery store the day AFTER Valentine’s and grabbing all the half-price chocolate :-D. There is one more pink mani coming on Wednesday (just because), and then on to less girly pastures!

img_5247

I am a little curious myself…this is my first Valentine’s day since I got married. I don’t think my husband and I are doing anything we don’t usually do (small gifts, fancy dinner, and not-flowers), but will it feel different? I highly doubt it :-p. Hope you enjoyed the nail art!

Fade to Pink Floral

There are basically two versions of this mani…which I wore on opposing hands. I’ll be posting one today (clearly) and the other next week. They are, in fact, different manis…it just turns out when you try to gradient with white and red, it looks like a lot like using different shades of pink!

img_5368

This is a triple-pink gradient, with a pink holo stamped on top. I honestly thought that Ciara (the darkest pink in the gradient) would not end up being so dark, so the pattern would show more at the tips. Clearly, I was wrong! It still looks cool. I was aiming for a Valentine’s Day color palette…so yah.

img_5357

The design is from a stamping plate that I was sent to review from the Born Pretty Store…and I have to say I love it. Some of their plates can be hit-or-miss, either in terms of design or etching. This one is perfectly etched, and the designs are all really pretty! everything on this plate is vaguely stylized floral patterns, but they are all large enough that you can fit them in different orientations (see, for example, my pointer vs. middle fingers…same stamp just rotated and it still covers my whole nail). I have to say I’m impressed!

Lace Down

I saw a gradient with light lace stamping on it, and thought “oh, fun!” so here we are!

img_7423

Really, the colors (again) got darker than I expected more quickly than I expected…I apparently am lacking in medium-dark pink cremes. Who knew? I don’t even like pink that much (mostly because everyone else does…yes, I am a hipster nail polish person), but maybe I should invest in a medium dark pink at some point!

img_7418

Unfortunately, the stamping plate I was using has rounded edges…not just corners, the whole side is beveled down! The stamp I used was on this beveled section, and so part of it wouldn’t transfer no matter what I tried (it wouldn’t pick up at all, since the etching was much more shallow over the beveled section), so I had to add white lines by hand to the tips of my nails. Oops! And this is why I buy un-beveled plates. I can’t be too upset, this was free for me to review months ago!

Coral, Pink, and Gold

I had been missing water marbles…so I went ahead and did one! I have been seeing a lot of pink + coral + gold, so I used that color theme.

IMG_3771

Ever since I got Clearwater by Pipe Dream Polish, I have taken great glee out of water marbling over a metallic polish that would NEVER otherwise be usable…like Good as Gold by essie. Metallics do not marble!

IMG_9519

This was fast and dirty…I just did a fun looking pattern in the marbled polish and dipped my whole darn hand in at once. I usually don’t do that, but I didn’t feel like wasting a whole bunch of polish and I was getting impatient with myself. Despite my rush, the whole thing came out looking alright!

Hope you enjoyed! For Friday of this chrome week we AGAIN have a multichrome polish, so enjoy in advance!

Optimistic

So, this polish has an interesting origin story. At my bridal shower (thrown by my sister and my mother) the party favors were nail polish! Totally a good call on their parts. Unfortunately, my sister lost the color battle so they were all shades of pink and red, but luckily won the brand battle so they got essie (and not sinful colors or wet n’ wild)! The polish I am wearing here was the one I snagged from the few leftovers, so I am wearing my own bridal shower polish!

IMG_3332

The polish itself is called Eternal Optimist, and is a slightly greyed medium light pink. 100% work appropriate but a bit more interesting than a candy pink, at least to me! Eternal Optimist covered nicely in two coats, and was beautifully glossy and self-leveling. Basically, it had a typical formula for essie creme polishes.

IMG_8287

I then went and added triangles with white polish, and threw on some bits and pieces of water decals I had sitting around! I always save my leftover water decal pieces, since I always have left over from full-nail designs. This ended up pretty cool, although it was a hassle trying to find the right sized triangle to match the white patch on my nails! I maybe should have measured (at least by eye) before I painted the white polish on.

IMG_8335

The design was finished with striping tape and top coat. The striping tape was really a necessity since the water decals were not perfect fits for the white patches. Whoops!

IMG_3333

Hope you enjoyed! Next week is chrome polish week. Since I have so many posts lined up, I am making themed weeks! Although some of the themes are things like “short nails” and “nerdy”. I haven’t picked out an order to post them it yet!

Dainty and Delicate

A friend of mine recently got engaged, and was telling me all about how she wanted pink elegant but cute nails for when her boyfriend proposed and they took photos of her hands. I didn’t end up doing her nails (she went with a nice hot pink/red and the ring looked awesome in contrast…also her nails just get longer and more shaply than mine. I’m jealous). Nevertheless, her desire for something classy but subdued led me to the internet, where I found a nail design I wanted to try so I could show her.

The original nail design was done in yellow, gold, white, and black. Now, I dislike the color yellow with a passion (it reminds me of things withering and sickness), and my friend likes pink…so I went and found my pretty medium tone pink…and went to town. I’m going to have to try this design again with a different silver in the middle (you can hardly see it here) and I think I have a good idea for what pinks I want to mix.

Enjoy!

I think the last photo is more true to color…and this might be the longest my nails have ever been (all around…my second and third nails love to chip, and I can’t seem to find a way to get them to grow out without breaking and falling apart 😦 ).
