Failed Quartz

I was trying to make a pseudo-marble manicure (since everyone else seems to e making marble nails) and I wanted something pretty and subtle…so I went with a light grey and pale pink. And then I added another shade of pink. And a blush. And then it was too pink and the grey looked blue so I added white. And then some rose gold glitter…and the whole thing just took a life of its own!

IMG_5779

In the end although I do think these nails look cool, they look nothing like I intended. I will have to re-try the marble theme at some point! And maybe they will actually end up marble-like by the time I am done :-p. Hope you enjoyed!

Orange Ombre Crests

I don’t know that I have ever done an orange ombre. To be fair, I don’t know that I would have had enough polishes to even attempt this until recently…and even so I need a new pastel orange, this one is officially empty! I decided of course that ombre wasn’t enough to quality as nail art, so I added a white stamp (that shows up better over the darker colors) and voila!

IMG_5561

Sadly, the polish on my ring finger (the KBShimmer one) is so neon that it bleaches itself in photos. I tried to bring out the color a bit more, but I don’t know if I succeeded! The ombre was really quite fun. I always want to do gradients instead, but this showcases the colors better and is much much easier! I’ll have to keep that in mind :-p. Hope you enjoyed!

Neutral Bubbles on Teal

I wanted to make a mix of neutral colored bubbles, but I couldn’t decide what color to put them over! For some reason I decided a pale teal would do the trick, and here we are. In retrospect I wish I had gone with black (or one of my neutral creme polishes that I didn’t use for the bubbles) but too late! The end result is honestly rather weird, but this took hours (coloring in all the bubbles) so I am posting it anyway!

Moral of the story: If you are going to spend a very long time doing reverse stamping, make sure you have a PLAN or all your hard work is going to end up looking rather half-assed!

Summer Flower Gradient

I painted these in January. It was cold, there was a sleeting icy mess outside, and I decided it was time for some bright sunny colors. If the outside world would not cooperate, I would just have to make them happen myself! And that is how this manicure was born. Of course, its more fitting to post them in spring so here we are!

IMG_9448

I have been on a kick of adding highlights with my few not-quite-opaque pastel multichromes, and it makes me very happy. This time I added some Rainforest over the center of the flowers just for a bit of variety! You can’t really see it in the sunlight (for example, the second photo) but indoors it was glittery and added just a little kick that I think helped overall. Hope you enjoyed 😀

Pressed Leaves on Papaya

This manicure is a combination of many pretty things, that when put together, makes a surprisingly ugly end result. A nice gradient, some pretty glitter, a fun leaf stamp…and it did not work! Anyway, here are the individual pieces.

IMG_9452

The base color is a new-to-me polish, three thin coats of Papaya Don’t Preach by KBShimmer. I wanted a pastel neon orange, and what I ended up with was a light neon orange…which is very pretty, I will absolutely use, and is not what I was going for! Oops. Darn comparison photos, it looked lighter in swatches (lets be honest, that is true of most neons, cameras just cannot handle them). As neons do, this dried semi-gloss, photos here are with top coat. It has a nice even glide to it and is quite a fun color! It is just too dark for what I had in mind.

IMG_5373

I am also, FINALLY, the proud owner of Fairy Floss by China Glaze. I have wanted this scattered holo top coat for years but never wanted to pay full price for it. Well, I found it on sale for $5 and decided it was coming home with me this time. It makes gradients better, and I needed it! Ahhh, wonderful glitter :-). So, different pieces…odd end result. Hope you can enjoy somewhat!

Simple Mauve Lace

I wanted to see if one of the larger stamps I own could be made to stretch prettily across all my fingers. Success! Of course, nude lace stamping is never complete without some jelly accents, so this ended up a little more purple than I initially intended.

IMG_7622

The purple jelly had somehow migrated to the purples in my polish collection rather than the jellies (a few finishes get side aside from their color pool in my organizational setup, jellies are one of them). Luckily, I tend to remember the name of particular polishes so Katherine was easy to find! Hope you enjoyed, happy (belated) Valentine’s Day, and I hope you are all excited as I am that next week we move back to COLORS!

Awkward Swirls

You guys, I think I just completely forgot to write down what I did with this manicure. I have no records of having painted it at all…but there are photos and a title attached! So I am going to have to guess at what I did. I am pretty sure I started with a blue base, painted a shimmery flakie polish over that, and then for some very odd reason stamped in a pale teal? That is the weirdest part, why would I stamp in teal?! Awkward indeed.

Colors (my best guess):

~ Shimmer: KBShimmer – Sandy
~ Teal: I have no idea, I own three similar teals, sorry!

I really hope there aren’t a bunch more manicures floating around that don’t have descriptions somewhere in my completed folder! I will accept one, but not more! Hope the awkward of the teal stamping didn’t turn you off this manicure!

Frozen Leaves

The last of my Hanukkah-not-Christmas nails! Aka lots of blue :-). Really, the theme of this particular manicure was icy leaves and I think I hit it on the nose! Also, it was fun to do some intentional double stamping. Even if I didn’t line things up perfectly.

Happy Friday! You guys, I get my first vacation of this year’s residency starting on Sunday. I am SO EXCITED. Today is also the last day of the Mandalorian and I am excited to see what baby Yoda does…

Exploding Pastels

I have failed, slightly. I managed to make every day of posting line up with the corresponding day of the 31 Day Challenge, except this. The final day, and I have failed! Really, I just did not have time to make a tutorial, so I decided to instead go with the 31st day of the Challenge prompt, honor nails you love.

IMG_3774

This nail art was inspired by @urbannailart and other than not having the best hand at curlicues yet, I actually think I did it justice! I need a grainier black holo, apparently. I adore most things that Urban Nail Art puts together, they are both colorful and innovative!

Of course, the sun did not cooperate, so there are not as many photos as I would like, sorry! Overall, I hope you enjoyed my nail art for the 31 Day Challenge as much as I enjoyed creating them! The next few weeks will be not nearly as pretty; all my good art is used up :-p. Phew! Also, apparently yesterday was my 7th blogaversary. 7 years of Flight of Whimsy! I am almost impressed with myself!

Thick Vampy Curls

This was designed to match an outfit, which was a shimmery purple shirt with thick black velvet swirls over it. The nails matched perfectly! Of course, because the nails were matted, they also fell apart faster than I would have liked :-/

IMG_2674 2

Regardless, they are suitably purple/violet for Day 6 of the Challenge! They also reminded me that I need to wear more matte nails…at some point in the future when I am not wearing gloves all the time or squirting cleaning solution on my hands in the hospital.

Hope you enjoyed! Things get more fun next week…I think the entire week ended up being a collection of some of my favorite recent manicures!

Green Glaciers

This was a multi-step process. I wanted to make glaciers because I was traveling to Iceland. So, I decided to start with a greyed shimmery base…but used Memory Palace which is really a teal. I put away my grey gradient, and grabbed a teal gradient instead to make the glaciers. The end result was rather cool…but very teal-green. I asked my husband what I should add and he goes “northern lights”. Now, the northern lights are usually teal/green, and obviously that wouldn’t work, so I coarse-sponged on a tiny purple/red/yellow gradient. That looked surprisingly cool (thanks husband!) but it needed more oomph…so I added some rainbow flakies using Festival. Voila!

IMG_1602

I did end up using one of the new items from the Born Pretty Store to make the mountains (the darkest green thin line). I wasn’t sure these would stamp because the lines are so darn thin, but it worked just fine! The plate has a whole bunch of awesome mountain/waterfall/water full nail images that I used in a different mani that you’ll see soon.

IMG_1606

So thats today, Green Day in the 31 Day Challenge! And also glaciers to honor my trip to Iceland (which btw is beautiful). Hope you enjoyed!

Abstract Sky

Ok, so this isn’t QUITE a fail, it just isn’t nearly as good as I expected. Of course, I now own the item I wanted to use (gold glitter for stamping) but I didn’t have it when I painted these! Oops.
IMG_1457

The base color here is two coats of Gaia by KBShimmer from Jan 2019 PPP. This is a deep blue jelly that appears cobalt due to all the glitters: iridescent shards that shift teal to purple and coarse silver holo glitters. Both are plentiful. This polish takes just a bit of spreading due to the flakie load, but it dries down nicely on the nail! I love it.

IMG_1411

The design was inspired by de_briz. So, I started with Gaia, then layered on some MORE flakies (just for fun) and then stamped some dots in black. Sadly, my plate with swirly dots does not stamp well! This is doubly sad because the swirly dot design is literally mine…I had done it years ago and when the “make your own” stamping plate series became a thing I submitted it, and it got in. So this pattern was designed by me…and this plate hardly stamped. So, I started in black (which is not visible at all) and then tried to go over it in gold…and it was patchy and awful. So I top coated and tried to convince myself it was good enough. However, if I am anything in the nail art world, I am the woman who adds too many dots…so I fixed it by going over every dot by hand. With the same gold. I have to say, it looks much better. I also didn’t bother top coating at the end since the gold polish is a quick dry that actually lives up to its name, and I do love vaguely textured nails!

That’s it for today! I’ll have to try something like this mani without spending an extra hour free handing the dots next time. Live and learn!

Purple and Gold Tilt Marble

I don’t know the actual name for this technique, but I am going to call it tilt marbling. Water marbling uses water, dry marbling happens directly on your nail, and tilt marbling happens on an external surface by adding lots of polish and tilting the surface to get a cool pattern. In this case, I used a base of magnetic purple (inspired by Urban Nail Art, which was genius), then red creme, yellow creme, and gold sparkle polish, and tilted my stamper until my pattern was perfect. I would then try and re-center the blob of polish so one area wasn’t thicker than anything else.

IMG_1865

Because I did this on the stamper, it was very easy to remove. Had I done this on my mat I imagine I would have needed to add top coat to thicken the decal before I could apply it, and I love my decals thin. Luckily, I have three largish stampers and was able to cover all 5 nails by just making the decals cover most of the stamper face and then cutting them in half.

IMG_1844

In retrospect, I do wish I had used less gold glitter. I tried to cut it down by the time I reached my third stamper head, and even so it took over! I do love that I used (and then magnetized) the purple polish, you can see the magnet effect best at the tip of my middle finger, and it looks awesome. Next time I do this, I might use two magnetic polishes. We shall see! Hope you enjoyed!

Trailing Vines to Silver

This was simple, but fun! And for once my propensity to add dots to everything definitely made the mani better :-p

IMG_2349

I just really wanted to use Sapphire in a manicure. It has been a while, and it is a close-to-perfect blue. That said, with the silver and white and pink of this manicure it looks black! Oops. I don’t know why I decided to try and gradient a white cream to a silver holo, but it somewhat worked? I think I might stick with the same type of finish for gradients in the future. But you don’t learn anything without experimentation!

IMG_7633

Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed! This week was fantastically easy for me compared to the previous weeks, and next week will be worse again. So I apologize in advance if I miss a post!

Archways

I decided to use a different gold for stamping this time as I have finally run out of my go-to stamping gold (Good as Gold by Essie) and this one does NOT work as well! The image actually picks up, it just won’t transfer because the polish dries so fast that I can’t stamp quickly enough. I need more Essie! I ended up having to hand-paint some of these gold lines, and since my nails were so itty bitty I wasn’t super invested. In retrospect, I am pretty unhappy about that because the manicure ended up quite pretty!

IMG_3766

I also finally invested in some MoYou stamping plates (I owned none) when they had their cyber Monday sale….and I have to say I don’t love most of them. The designs are great and the etching is good (on all but one plate), but they are so small! I usually wear my nails longish, and the plates I got just won’t cover my whole nail. Maybe I should have gone with the fewer designs per plate setup, but then only the very center of each image would transfer. Its rather annoying!

~ Black with glitter: KBShimmer – Dark & Twisty

IMG_3771

Overall, another manicure with a lot of potential and mediocre execution. I also only have two photos because I did these as I came back from winter break and was too busy unpacking to take many nail photos. Also, apparently St Louis does NOT get sun in the winter (I thought Boston was bad, this is worse!) so there are no sunlight photos for this mani…or for a lot of the upcoming ones as well. Sorry!

Purple Bulls Eye

I mean, if you can call something off centered and purposeful off-stamped a bulls eye :-p

IMG_5045

I wish I had captured more of the silver under lighting! I was so proud of myself for yet another successful double stamp. I think I only had to completely restart one of the nails once! Success.

Not super exciting, but I liked it! Hope you enjoyed. I am on vacation next week (!!!!) so I should have some posts set up while I am away, but I won’t be responding to messages!

Gently Swirled

This mani is a mess. I wanted to make something subtle and swirly, and decided to give Sandy a second shot. The first time I used this polish it took 4 coats and was still barely opaque…and since it has a lot of glitter and flakies, it was quite thick. This mani ALSO took 4 coats and honestly I give up. Sandy is moving to my “pretend this is a topper” section in my nail art room.

IMG_4607

It also doesn’t help that on my easier-to-image left hand I decided to plan out where each part of my swirly stamp was going to go…and on my right hand I just winged it. The right hand looked much better in the end! But I took very few photos because the photos of my left always come out better. Silly me.

In the end, this mani was a bit of a bust. It fulfilled its purpose, which was to be subtle, but I didn’t love it. Ah well, on to next week!

Red and Green Strokes

One day closer to gift-day (aka Christmas) and one more red/green manicure!

IMG_3663

I started with red glitter, then double stamped with a white-to-green and green-to-white gradient (I don’t know why) and when that just looked messy I stamped with dark red. Despite the completely unplanned and frequently ugly nature of this manicure as it developed, I actually quite like the end result!

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

This is my entry for this years nail art canada holiday challenge! I have entered for the past 5 or so years, and last year I won the internal competition! Most years I just pick my very favorite holiday mani that I had done up to that point…but this year I painted something specifically for the challenge. I have to say I am quite pleased! The design itself was based off a press-on nail set by Project Nails.

IMG_3697

I started with a blue holographic base (mostly because I wanted to use a one-coat base and the halo hues collection from Color Club are basically magic). I then brush-gradiented using blue and purple scattered holo crellies and splotched on some dark teal jelly. Once that was all top coated and dry, it was design time!

IMG_5306

I basically freehanded some rooftops, then a moon, then snow, and finally windows and sled. The hardest part of the whole thing was certainly the reindeer, I still don’t love them but without using acrylic I think this is the best I can do! The only part of this mani that isn’t free-handed is the stars: those are stamps. The top of the moon was made from playing with variations of white and yellow to make a little gradient.

Please go vote for this entry in the challenge, it would be amazing to win! You can find the link here and sprinkled throughout the rest of this post. I will keep posting the link for the remainder of the contest. Hope you enjoyed, and thank you for voting!!

Swirling Wind

I don’t know what I was aiming for with this mani! I wanted something that looked cold and windy (it snowed for the first time on Friday, and is supposed to snow again today) and it felt appropriate! I started with a grey-white shimmery base and added some stamped swirls, and then colored them in. I don’t know if this was the best idea, or if I should have gone for some creme polishes to color in the wind!

IMG_3926

Regardless, the base color her is a new polish called Sandy by KBShimmer. It is from the August PPP. The swatches I saw made it look beautiful, which it is, but I didn’t look correctly at the layer count. This is three THICK coats, and the second time I wore it, it took 4 coats! No one has time for that. So, while I do like how it looks, I think I am relegating it to a topper. Fail.

IMG_1004

That said, the polish is a pretty pale grey with lots of purple shimmer than shits to blue, and tons of silver holo shards. I am currently into polishes with silver shards, for whoever reason! The base is a crelly for ease of sparkle, but I know (because I own) crellys that are 2-3 coats and not 3-4 coats. This polish is not easy to use.

IMG_1024

So, windy and long-winded (I think I’m funny). Overall, this mani was more time-consuming than pretty, and most of that is due to the base color. Live and learn! Hope you enjoyed 🙂
