Love for Purple

In case you can’t tell, the theme this year was “slightly unusual Valentine’s day art”, so I ended up with a lot of “love” and a lot of purple :-p. The fun thing here is the purple-on-purple background stamp (you can see it best on my ring finger) and THEN the purple to white gradient stamping. Basically lots of stamps!

The base color here is Lael by Zoya, a very dark blue-leaning purple cream. As with most Zoya creams, Lael is opaque in two thin coats, and is predictably a dream to work with. I should at some point do a comparison of all my dark purple Zoya cremes (I think I own 3 very similar ones at this point) but this is the darkest in my collection! My other darkest purple Zoya Monica, looks greyed-out in comparison to the intense dark purple of Lael.

~ Light purple: Zoya – Malia
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White

There is one more Valentines manicure in the wings for Monday (which only makes sense since my husband and I are celebrating on Sunday…at the moment I am on a day shift and he is on a nights shift so we hardly see each other!). Hope you enjoyed!

Love Above

This mani is a bit of nail art, some swatching, and a small amount of comparison. When Zoya did their New Years sale, I bought 4 new polishes that I intended to replace some terrible polishes that I own, and to fill a few gaps. This is the first of them!

What you see here are three thin coats of Jordan. I bought this polish to replaced Tickled Pink by Wet n’ Wild which takes 4 coats and is incredibly thick. I wanted to compare the two, so I put Tickled Pink on my ring finger, and Jordan on all the others. I cannot tell the difference! Which is to say that the swatches of Jordan online are accurate. I was hoping Jordan would be a two-coater, but for a pastel 3 isn’t terrible. This is just a nice pastel pink creme. No frills.

~ Pastel pink: Zoya – Jordan
~ Pastel pink: Wet n’ Wild – Tickled pink (ring finger only)
~ Pink: Zoya – Ciara
~ Dark pink: OPI – Vision of Love
~ Dark pink holo: A England – Let Me In
~ Stamp: B Loves Plates (from the tiny heart next to the plate name)

I then added a gradient, and stamped a tiny pink heart near my cuticle. Super easy, but quite pretty! I do wish I had started the gradient a biiit close to my free edge, but it still looks nice! It was a really quite fitting manicure to wear right before Valentine’s day…so I hope you guys all have a great (and chocolate-filled) tomorrow!

Holo and Hearts

How about a not-quite-traditional valentine’s day mani, for all that I think I’ve used this particular stamp at least once a year, and typically ON valentines day!

The base color here is Zoya Payton, a purple scattered holo. The base is a bit more pink-leaning, and hilariously (or not) enough it is an almost perfect dupe for TWO other polishes in my collection. I love jewel tone purples, its a problem! That said, Payton covered very well in two thicker coats and my others take three coats. However, if you happen to on LA Girl Purple Effect…you don’t need Payton. Oops!

I decided that Payton alone was not enough, so I dry marbled on a bit of LA Girl Purple Effect (which is why I know they are basically perfect dupes) and Milani Hi-Res. It was still a bit subtle…so I decided to stamp with a silver holo instead of just a silver like I had planned!

~ Purple holo: Zoya – Payton
~ Light purple holo: Milani – Hi-Res
~ Other purple holo: LA Girl – Purple Effect
~ Silver holo: Color Club – Harp on It
~ Stamp: BC – 04

The end effect was dizzying, and you can barely see the pattern of the stamp over all the purple holo! It was still fun to wear, but I need to remember to use a creme to stamp over glitters, not another glitter! Stay tuned for more quasi-valentine’s day manis this week 🙂

Nerds in Love

The second of my Valentine’s Day manis (there will be 5 in total) features something near and dear to my heart: nerd culture. Mostly because I am a nerd. As is my husband (who is as I type this watching youtube videos of people playing various Zelda games…which he has already beaten. Repeatedly).

I wanted to combine two stamps from two different Bundle Monster plates, the nerd culture words (which feature such phrases as ‘trekkie,’ ‘jedi,’ ‘sherlockian,’ ‘whovian,’ ‘potter head,’ ‘sith,’ and my personal favorite ‘browncoats’). The other plate just has 8-bit hearts, much like you might get as lives in older video games.

The base polish here is another of the new polishes that I won from Nail Polish Canada, Blake from the new Zoya collection. I have to say, I don’t know that I would have picked out this polish for myself (it is a dark blue and I already own 6 or so dark blues) but I love it. It is a very deep midnight blue, almost black, which is opaque in two very thin coats. It also has a fine golden shimmer running through it, which makes it even more awesome.

Oddly, in the 21 polishes that I received from the nail art contest, 4 are dark blue! Additionally, 7 are purple. I always figured winter/holiday collections would go heavy on the red and green, but I only received two reds and no greens. Go figure!

~ Blue: Zoya – Blake
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
~ Red: City Color – Masquerade
~ Stamps: BM – 601, 602

Overall, I am pretty darn happy with how this came out! My poor white polish is beginning to truly dry out (and I cannot find it anywhere, my local Rite Aid stopped carrying the full line of Sinful Colors polishes!) so picking up some of the finer lines was…challenging. Regardless, I hope you enjoyed this ode to nerd culture!

Winged Love

In my head, the name of this mani is all Shakespeare-ified (Wing’ed Love) but I figured adding an apostrophe would confuse everyone…and I left it in normal English. Anyway, today starts my Valentine’s manis and I wanted to do something with birds!

Basically, I found this small stamp I had never used (despite owning the plate for years) and wanted to create a mani around it. That is the two doves image on my middle finger. I ended up using birds from 3 different stamping plates and leaves from a fourth. So. Many. Stamps!

This mani also uses the first of the polishes that I won from the Nail Polish Canada holiday nail art challenge! I ended up with 21 new polish (omg) about 2/3 of which I adore and 1/3 of which I would never have picked. This is one of the ones I would not have gone for. This is Once in a Blue Moon by ORLY, and is actually a nice pale blue-grey color, and is a two-coater which is great. However…it is also a frost. Can the nail polish community at large just agree to stop making frosty polishes? There are brush strokes all over the place and I would much rather see this as a shimmer or metallic, or even a creme. Also, I hate the ORLY brushes, they are far too wide for my poor pinky nail! All-in-all, I don’t know that I am going to try very hard to keep this particular color…it might end up going to my sister.

~ Blue: ORLY – Once in a Blue Moon
~ Green: Zoya – Shawn
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ Pink: Revlon – Bubbly
~ Stamps: BM – XL472, BC – 06, BP – L067, EdM – 07

Now I sort of wish I had tried to double stamp the birds in white, but it looks alright as it is! I am also glad that the border images from BM – XL472 seem to fit my nails :-).

That’s all for today, hope you enjoyed and get ready for more love-themed manis!

Lovely Chevrons

YOU GUYS. I had SUCH a hard time completing this manicure but i LOVE it. Go figure!

I started with the base of another new-to-me ILNP, Ski Lodge. Ever since Mentality went belly-up and nails-down (ohhh my poor nails) I have been looking for a scattered dark green holo to replace one I got from them that I loved. I think I have found it!

Ski Lodge is a dark heather green (almost a dark olive rather than a dark emerald) with a ridiculous amount of larger holo shards and glitters and maybe some gold shimmer. I can’t even tell, there is so much glitter and depth to this! I am showing 3 coats, although I really could have stopped at two. It makes me happy.

I then grabbed another new Born Pretty Store stamping plate, BP-X06, and had a really difficult time picking what pattern to use and what color to stamp! I didn’t want to cover the glory that was Ski Lodge, and I always do green+gold so I wanted to change things up. I think I tried 5 different patterns and colors before I realized I could do something more subtle…like a silver-green-blue stamping multichrome over the dark green holo! So I went and grabbed Mutagen by ILNP and added using the chevron stamp.

Mutagen is not super opaque on its own, so the fact that you can clearly see the pattern (which I was really worried wouldn’t happen) is a testament to how well etched this plate is. Go plate! I added the LOVE stamp too, just for fun. I was going to use a light pink, but as it turns out neither of my two light pink polishes stamp well over dark green. Go figure.

If you want to pick up this stamping plate with all its fun geometric patterns, head over to the Born Pretty Store where its $1.99! Hope you enjoyed!

Love Letter

Another nude mani! Unfortunately, I snapped the corner off my pinky the day I painted this, so I needed to put together something where my pinky would not stand out for being oddly shaped (apologizes in advance, the next few manis are probably also gonna have my oddly shaped pinky because I refuse to completely cut off my other nails). With that in mind, I put together a manicure that let me use the love words stamp from Bundle Monster, as well as a nude gold glitter and envelopes!

I have seen tons of envelope manis, and I wanted to try my hand at one. This might have gone a tiny bit better if I painted it with my dominant hand, but overall I like it! The only mistake? I made the envelopes upside-down for imaging! So most of the photos here have been manipulated (aka turned in one direction or another).

Hope you enjoyed! And happy day-before-Valentine’s Day!

I was wearing a red dress to my own engagement party right after Thanksgiving, so I needed to re-paint my nails to match. And to communicate love. Because that seemed like fun! (It did almost make me late to the party, but just almost :-D).

Really, this was just a bunch of stamps. Unfortunately, the one I was most excited about didn’t transfer! The new 2014 set from Bundle Monster has a plate with an EKG reading with a heart at the end of the T wave (yes, medical school means I can read EKGs…no, a normal EKG reading does not include an actual heart in the wave :-p) that I was super excited to use…and no luck! It partially transferred, but in order to make it wearable I stamped over it a second time with a grate pattern.

Not my best work, but I think I salved it ok! Hope you enjoyed!

My official Valentine’s Day manicure is suitably nerdy and also wonderful. One of my favorite webcomics is xkcd (in case you couldn’t tell from the banner at the side of my blog), and I have been wanting to do xkcd-themed nails for a while. Although this doesn’t quite count (I will still be doing stick figures at some point), these nails were inspired by my favorite individual comic from the series…Useless.

The point is that a nerd’s normal approach to life (math) is useless in the face of love. You can’t take the cosine of love, or use the identity matrix to figure it out. The derivative of love tells you nothing, and the square root of a heart is still a heart 😀

These were made using decals…which is to say since these are on my dominant hand, I actually painted them onto my stamper, peeled them off, and applied them to my nails. They are not perfect (either the writing or the application) but I think they are still adorable. Also, I matted them. Because…comics. Yah.

  • White: Zoya – Purity
  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
  • Red: OPI – All I Want For Christmas (is OPI)

I also have to say that the fine writing detail in this mani was only possible because my friend was curious if I could get finer lines by using a finer brush. And so he made me one. Its a modified protractor part with a single toothbrush hair stuck on the top (he assured me it was an UNUSED toothbrush). The verdict: oh yes, I can definitely do details with this brush! It’s a little unwieldy to hold, but for decals it is amazing. So thanks, David! I know you read this :-p

Happy Valentine’s Day! Go eat lots of chocolate, get flowers, or something. If you are single, get YOURSELF flowers. It is still awesome 😀

Love Letter

I promised myself that I wouldn’t make another Valentine’s mani…but I lied. I remember the “love” bundle monster stamp and decided this was the one time I was allowed to use it, so I must! Unfortunately, mine is…um…mis-etched. The “e” in love is incomplete and looks like a “c”. Darn. I’m also not quite sure this counts as my Golden Oldies challenge mani, because the only old polish here (which granted is 1.5 years old) is the black. It is also technically the only one used for the valentines part of the mani…so I’m going to pretend it works! 😀

I decided to use only holographic polishes for this (other than the stamping in black) and so reached for the ones I had nearest…the diamond collection by Darling Diva. Since all the ones I had tried so far were one-coaters, I figured this would be a quick manicure! I was right 🙂

The base color is Pink Diamond, a pale pink that leans purple. I have been told that this stains badly…the base is actually a very hot pink with a LOT of holo sparkle tossed in! This was one easy (and quick drying) coat. Unfortunately, some of the rainbow when away when I added top coat, but I do like this polish. It’s subtle, but stunning, and since it leans blue/purple, I don’t end up with lobster hands!

This mani took a few steps. I added brown holo using the saran wrap method, to make it look more like crumpled paper. (You can’t really tell that I did this in most of the photos as the effect is subtle, but I rather like the dimensonality it gives). I then stamped with bundle monster 311. Unfortunately, the base wasn’t quite dry (I had only waited about 10 minutes between applying the pink base and trying to stamp over it) so it squished the polish. Crumped paper effect! Win. I then free-handed roses with dark pink, light pink, and green and black/grey for the leaves.

Honestly, I’m not sure why I just walked you guys through that. This mani (remarkably) took about 45 minutes. Everything just dries really fast! And that was WITH pausing to take photos all the time.

  • Light pink: Darling Diva – Pink Diamond
  • Brown: Darling Diva – Chocolate Diamond
  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
  • Dark pink: Darling Diva – Rose Diamond
  • Green: Darling Diva – Green Diamond
  • Grey: Darling Diva – Black Diamond
  • Stamp: Bundle Monster – 311

Hope you enjoyed! The love themed manis end tomorrow (I promise) and then back to your regularly scheduled Eva’s-fun-with-colors-that-aren’t-red-or-pink 😀

Hearts In The Deep

I have NO idea why, but for some reason I am dedicating this manicure to Lord Of The Rings, “We cannot get out. The end comes. Drums, drums in the deep. They are coming”. This is Hearts In The Deep, aka my first attempt at a pond mani! Nail Art Canada included as their Valentine’s Day challenge a “most hearts” challenge, and this is my entry!

I actually spent an hour trying to test a bunch of different polishes because I don’t own any jellies…and for a successful pond mani you need a jelly polish! Then I remembered, my old mini OPI scented glitters! Lo and behold, I am saved. None of the other polishes I tried were going to work (like…at all. It was painful), and then I remembered my little rainbow set that I had stopped using because they weren’t opaque enough. I got them when I first started doing nail art and didn’t know why they were so sheer. Now I know: I have a whole rainbow of jellies! Yay!

This manicure took a LONG time. I had to wait (well, as best I could) between adding each layer of hearts and adding the next layer of polish. I also messed up my accent nail TWICE and had to re-start it. It has 8 layers of polish, and just did NOT want to dry. D’oh.

I counted as I went (I have a montage of all the hearts at the bottom of this post) and I think I ended up with 64 hearts in the “pond” style, with either one or 4 on my accent nail (depending on how you count it). Go me!

I think I have to try more pond manis in the future. This was fun!
