Candy Swirl

Short post today, because I forgot to write this over the weekend and I need to head into the hospital for work!

img_2795

This was inspired by Pet Nails although I cannot seem to find her blog anywhere! Googling “pet nails nail art” is a sure-file way to get pictures of people’s dog’s painted toenails!

img_4795

My nails are not so varied as hers nor are my lines quite as thin…I almost wish that I had looked at her image while I was painting mine! Mine are fine, but her’s are better and I could have done them exactly. Whoops!

That’s all. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving (if you live in the US)!

Cityscape by Night

This mani took forever and I LOVE it! The only problem were some trapped air bubbles which I’ll talk about in a bit.

img_8777

This was inspired by @ponkle. I actually made the black sheer jelly myself. I bought a wet n’ wild top coat but it dries slower than grass grows, so I decided to add a few drops of the wet n’ wild black creme to it and make a sheer jelly polish for lace and things like this! I like it much better this way, although it still takes forever to dry. At least I can safely add a real fast-drying top coat!

img_8781

That being said, the black sheer jelly I made took three coats to even be a little visible…and I didn’t wait quite long enough between layers! Thus I ended up trapping a bunch of air bubbles. When I matted the final product, they all jumped out! It took 24 hours for them to really appear…so my initial photos look great but my sunlight photos look odd. I decided to just show one below…lets pretend that the bubbles are stars in the sky? That works, right?

So, these aren’t quite Halloween-y, but I figured a cityscape by night was at least seasonal! Next week I should have some real Halloween manis (assuming I have time to edit them between wedding planning!). I was going to do a whole how-to-DIY post on making wedding centerpieces out of fancy fake flowers and putting together a chuppah but I ran out of time for that as well. :-/. Anyway, happy Friday!

Celestial Spheres

Looking back over nail artists who inspire me, I’ve realized that a number of the women who’s nail art I loved years ago and who eventually persuaded me to try my own hand at nail art have faded out of existence. The two biggest names that make me very sad are WorkPlayPolish and KaylaShevonne, both of whom were extraordinary. Even the ones who are still around post infrequently, like ChalkboardNails. One of the only ladies who predates me and has stuck around posting amazing nail art day after day is Cathy at More Nail Polish. So this mani is inspired by and in homage to her!

img_1712

I actually went through the past 3 or so years worth of her nail art….at least what is on instagram. I personally hate instagram, I like being able to say things about my nail art and post more than one photo…and IG takes all of that away. However, it is good for quick scrolling!

img_4414

While looking, I found a number of things I liked…one of which reminded me that I hadn’t worked with blue recently AND that I had this really cool stamp that I had never actually used! So here we are, with some art inspired by MoreNailPolish.

Anyway, this concludes the 31 Day Challenge of 2016. I almost made it! *sigh* who knows what I’ll be up to next year, but hopefully I’ll still be posting! It makes me sad that so many women give up on their blogs, and that they do so without warning. I want to know where all the people I used to follow have gone off to! If I ever do have to stop posting (which I’m sure will happen during intern year of residency), I will at least give warning, I promise!

Picnicking

Summery nails! I actually wore these right around July 4th, just before I returned to the hospital. Poor long nails, I miss you!

IMG_9657

The art was inspired by the awesome and wonderful combo of Chalkboard Nails and More Nail Polish, two of my very favorite nail artists! I took the stamp from More Nail Polish and the accent watermelon from Chalkboard Nails. Unfortunately, I neither have a black sparse glitter top coat nor an ant stamp…so I had to freehand my ants. My boyfriend insists they look like spiders. I hate spiders! These are TOTALLY ants…they only have 6 legs and spiders have 8. Ergo, ants!

IMG_3828

The idea of stamping the picnic blanket was genius on the part of More Nail Polish, since hand-painting that would have been terrible! And this is adorable, I think.

Hope you enjoyed! And I hope it cools down a bit here. It is quite frankly too hot to go outside, much less to picnic!

Zagged

This manicure makes me sad. I have an awesome new super shiny silver holographic polish…and then I added THIS to the top. Fail!!

IMG_3262

Stockpile took two medium coats, I could have added a third for more glitter depth but I don’t think it was necessary. It is a silver holo glitter bomb with lots of silver shards. In direct light it looks like a dense scattered holo, and in indirect light it looks like silver shards on a paler silver background. Either way it is stunning.

IMG_8085

The stamp is also rather fun, its from Lady Queen Beauty. But nothing was cooperating…the sun was (somehow) too bright and the sunlight photos are completely over saturated…and the shady photos were all out of focus! Fail 😦

I can’t even promise that tomorrow mani looks good…which is to say it looks even worse. But I’ll be back on Friday too with an awesome one!!

Sapphire Crown

This I love. I actually love this so much I’m considering duplicating it for my wedding (but in purple. Maybe use the same grey base? I don’t know). Its just elegant but twirly and so pretty!

IMG_7644

The base is another new-to-me Emily de Molly polish. I am buying them in DROVES. Its ridiculous. This one is Crystal Crown (hence the title of this post), and its a pretty soft grey with golden-green shimmer and a linear holo flare in direct light. The holo is not in-your-face, and neither is the shimmer, but both are visible. It is, if anything, a bit darker than I was expecting (I was going for almost-white) but it is pretty! And maybe work appropriate? I did take 3 coats for good coverage, but dried fast.

IMG_7545

I added top coat and double stamped. The first stamp, which I am including one picture of because it was so pretty even if it was really subtle, was just a bunch of curlicues from Bundle Monster plate 607. I stamped with tone-on-tone grey, using WOW #333. You really can barely see it but it is stunning!

IMG_7622

I added a second curly stamp using Bundle Monster 314 (probably my favorite stamp among everything I own. I’ve used it at least 5 times) and a dark blue polish Midnight Swim by Maybelline. I rotated which part of the (admittedly small) stamp area I picked up, and rotated where it went on the nail.

IMG_7635

I was debating stamping with either a dark pink or black, and I am so glad I picked the blue. It’s such a cool look!

IMG_7663

Hope you enjoyed 😀

Encased in Diamond

My nails are so tiny! And so sad. I went to New York City this past weekend to hang out with some friends, and in the process slightly broke two nails and completely devastated a third. I cut both of my hands down…but you can still see the devastation on my pointer finger here. It ripped halfway down into my nail bed 😦

IMG_2764

Despite this terrible tear (which I am going to attempt to patch up and grow out, if I can), this mani came out quite cute! I had been looking at this diamond pattern on B. Loves Plates plate 03, but it was a tilted diamond…however, since my nails are so short I was able to apply it vertically!

IMG_6137

The stamp has two colors on it, a lighter blue in the middle and a darker blue on either side. I thought it was rather fun!

Turquoised

Blue! And teal! I am sooo glad I wrote down all the names of the polishes that I used when I made this, because there is no way I would remember them now.

IMG_5290

This was the base of the mani that I used for my pshiiit-inspired design from Nail Art Fashion Week. As I was putting together the teal an blue splotches and glitter and flakies I really liked how it looked…so I took some photos! I usually only do that if I’m afraid that I’ll mess up the final result and an intermediate step looks good…in this case it gets it own post!

IMG_5293

So anyway, lots of teal. I used the stamper smush (technical term) method to get the colors on. It worked great this time, but I’ve actually tried it again since and it looked awful. Some colors work and some don’t I guess!

IMG_5287

Also, adding Sparkling Garbage to the top of ANYTHING makes it magic. My friends and I made some dragon eggs (more about that later) a week ago and we ended up topping a dark green metallic with Sparkling Garbage…it was magic.

White Flowers

This was inspired by @nailsbycambria although I went a little nuts with the different flower types! I wanted to test my newest clear stamper. IT IS MAGIC.

IMG_5528

So, I have my B. Loves crystal clear stamper…and it is SUPER squishy, which I am not used to and thus have a hard time picking up images. Cathy over at More Nail Polish did a comparison of the clear stampers she owns a few months back, and recommended the piCture pOlish one. When I saw that they had it in stock at color4nails (along with the purple holo I had been meaning to buy after it appeared on EVERYONE’S ‘favorite of 2015’ list, and an on-sale A England) I just had to get it. Best. Idea. Ever.

IMG_2598

The picture polish clear stamper is harder and more curved, but pick up just a well (if not better) than my old stamper, and picks up the same WAY. It is slightly harder to position properly due to the increased curvature, but sooo much easier for me to work with!

IMG_5523

It comes with a plastic cover (yay) and a back-up stamping head (more yay!) in addition to the clear stamper. Sadly, the head that arrived on my stamper is slightly defective (the inner part of the squishy section looks like it got folded at one point and dried with creases). It does not at all affect the stamping ability, and really doesn’t much impact how much I can see through it, I just need to ignore the wrinkles when I place the stamp. The extra head is completely ok, so I might switch to that at some point.

ANYWAY. I wanted a mint-and-green gradient like what Cambria had done, so I put this together! I’m pretty darn happy with how this turned out…I had been wanting to do lots of flowers for a while, but I could never get them to line up how I wanted! Ta-da! Hope you enjoyed! And thanks Cathy for the recommendation 😀

Feathers of Gold

I am posting all my nail art out of order. This was done right after I got the piCture pOlish clear stamper, to test it on glittery polish!

IMG_5571

As it turns out, the piCture pOlish clear stamper even picks up glitter without issue! Yay. I’ve been switching back and forth between my two clear stampers, the super squishy B. Loves Plates one…which is easy to line up but hard to pick up polish with, and this one by piCture pOlish which is easy to grab the polish, but has a defect in the clear head AND is more curvy, so is harder to position appropriately!

IMG_2611

The nail art was loosely inspired by @clairestelle8, I mostly liked her color combo! Although I found this initially on pinterest from one of those awful click bait sites which never ever give link backs to the initial material…and her watermark is so tiny I had a really hard time telling ‘e’ from ‘c’ and ‘o’! It took me a while to find her instagram, but I feel compelled to give credit where credit is due. Darn you awful click bait sites!

That’s it for this week! Happy weekend!

Splotches and Chevrons

Today’s prompt for Nail Art Fashion Week 2016 was “style icon.” Now, anyone who knows me knows I have 0 style sense (if it fits and has some type of glitter or pattern on it, I’ll wear it), and that I don’t care to get one. I wear sneakers with skirts and everyone else can just deal with it :-p

IMG_5365

So, I had to think of something else for “style icon” and of course, I ended up with nail art style icon! Which means I had to mimic something by pshiiit…she is not my favorite nail art blogger, but its a toss-up between her and Very Emily who’s overall nail art style I like best! Everyone else (myself included) tends to vary widely in what we do for art…but pshiiit (and Emily) have a distinct feel to their nail art that I just love! In pshiiit’s case, it tends towards chevrons and pops of color or glitter.

IMG_2576

Anyway, today’s nail art was inspired by pshiiit, so here we go! Lots of teal, some glitter, and some chevrons. And also a funny title because I couldn’t think of anything else.

Hope you enjoyed! Technically NAFW2016 goes through Sunday, but I never post on weekends AND I know nothing about the Fall 2016 collection (nor do I care that much. Fashion is wayyyy beyond me) so this is it!

Whales

It has been a while since I’ve done a 100% cute mani, so I thought it was time! Thus, I present tiny adorable whales 😀

IMG_2138

This mani was inspired by dry dammit. I even matted it, as I like the result matted! There is one pre-matte photo in the post, just so you guys can see how shiny the blue was before I made it un-shiny.

IMG_3835

Maybe I should at some point try painting my beta fish. Then again, he is a ridiculous concoction of mermaid/peacock colors with a giant spiky tail…so maybe not.

Ink Scroll

Turns out a name for the awesome Japanese scroll art is ‘kakejiku’ which is a perfect description for this mani! Although it looks awesome, I can claim very little effort on my part 😀 (and since the description on the Lady Queen Beauty website says these are Chinese-based designs, I opted against giving this post a Japanese title…but it was the first thing I thought of!).

IMG_4584

All the awesome designs on this (the misty mountains and the red flowers) are water decals, from set BLE1813. As water decals go, these are basically perfect. The hard plastic top sheet is easy to remove even from small cut-apart decals, and the decals themselves have pre-defined boarders and a clear background. The decals are thin but not overly breakable, and were easy to re-position as long as they were still wet. 10 out of 10 for ease of use!

IMG_4582

I have missed how easy it is to make beautiful art with decals. I have been so caught up in my new stamper that I’ve been neglecting my nail art supply box!

IMG_2348

The base color here is a simple pale grey, Bare Bones by Maybelline. I thought about adding gold glitter around the mountains, but I decided against it. Sometimes simple is better!

IMG_2352

You can pick up these (and similar) decals from Lady Queen Beauty for $2.15. Don’t forget to use my 15% off code, BPLC15! Enjoy!

Mint and Diamonds

I was sent some really pretty aurora borealis rhinestones to review from Lady Queen Beauty, and had to figure out a mani pretty enough to pair them with! I wandered upon this awesome piece from Sveta Sanders and decided to modify it to be glittery.

IMG_2340

I started with two nude polishes (an opaque but darker nude – Zoya Chantal – and then a coat of a lighter nude – Sephora X Marvelous) because I have decided that naked manis just look awful on me. Once my nude polish was dry, I added a swirly white stamp (BM – 201).

IMG_4615

I tried two different stamps using my clear jelly stamper and neither picked up! But the one I am wearing now I have had good luck with in the past…and since centering the stamp wasn’t important I just grabbed my old hard stamper and used it instead. It’s such a different process with a hard stamper, but needless to say I am much better at picking up the image with a hard head.

IMG_2333

I then taped off a section of my nail and added a pale mint polish (Maybelline Green with Envy) around the taped off chevron. After removing the tape, I hand-painted thin lines with silver glitter polish (Revlon Metallic) and then added the studs!

IMG_4611

There are two sizes of studs on my nails, although the container has four sizes (the two sizes not shown are large and very large). I love the shimmery colors in these! I feel like I am looking at nail diamonds 🙂 You can find the studs at Lady Queen Beauty for $2.82. Don’t forget to use my 15% off code, BPLC15!

Peachy Party

This mani is something between awesome and a disaster. I had an idea and it didn’t pan out so I kept tweaking it. And somehow we ended up with pastels and neons in bright colors. And holo glitter. For fun.

IMG_1897

So, there is a LOT going on here. We have a rough pastel gradient, some cut-out polish pieces, and a glitter topper. The gradient, although made of pastels, is even more subtle than I was hoping for, but I refused to move on from my pastel obsession into something easily observable. The cut-out geometric polish patterns are months old…and as such had dried and become brittle by the time of this mani. Oops!

IMG_1890

Going forward, I’m going to try and store any decals/polish intending to be cut up and used on nails within a week of creating the decal. Otherwise the polish is just too darn hard to work with! That’s also why I ended up adding the glitter topper…some of the geometric pieces wouldn’t lie flat and I was getting impatient!

Reveal through Teal

Lines! Lots of lines. I had been doing too much free-handing and water marble (and stamping) so we are back on tape for today! And teal. Because I love teal.

IMG_2676

This simple bit of nail art was somewhat jointly inspired by @noemihk and @nailsofjessiek. Lots of people with the same idea!

IMG_1842

I don’t have a large chunky holo but I DO have a silver textured finish polish, so I improvised! It looks rather cool I think.

IMG_1855

Oddly, I was wearing this on one hand in conjunction with the post thats going up on Friday (this was on my left hand, the Friday post was on my right hand) and the response to both was really varied! I liked this better (you’ll see why, it has COLOR) but most people disagreed with me!

Hanging Vines of Teal

So, unlike the past four days (which were all painted within a week of each other), these nails were only done three weeks ago! Sometimes I accidentally cut my nails too short when I am trying to trim them. I figure these mostly count as tiny nails!

IMG_2494

The idea here was to do a waterfall mani a-la-Nailasaurus only even my short nails are too long to make that look appear good! So I added a second waterfall layer and purposefully made some of my lines squiggly…so now we have vines.

IMG_1797

Someday, I do want to try a proper waterfall mani. Sammy makes them look so good! Maybe I should try using my dominant hand to paint them though, I don’t know how good I’ll be at straight thin lines with my left hand.

Snowmen in Hats

Even though it it STILL not snowing here in Philly (apparently it snowed briefly this weekend, but I missed it!), I have a bunch of winter/snow-themed manis for this week! I can always hope that at some point this winter I will indeed get to build a snowman…

IMG_2013

This particular design was inspired by The Nail Network although I put teal trim on my hats! Partially because more colors always makes nail art better, and partially because I messed up one of the black hat lines and I was too lazy to try and fix it.

Fireworks

New Years Eve! It only made sense to post fireworks for today 😀

IMG_1694

Now, I cheated for this. The gold and rose gold are stamps! Well, one stamp that I set up in a gradient. All the bright flecks of color come from the purple base, which is three thin coats of Fowl Play! I don’t use this polish nearly as much as I should. Its quite pretty.

IMG_1693

The stamp that I used was from the hehe plate 024 from Lady Queen Beauty that I said I had used nearly every design from in the past month. Ta-da, firework design! It’s so cool.

Doily Doodles

Doodles! I really think these look like me having fun and making swirly patterns on my nails. The stamp here is from Bundle Monster’s Shangri-La collection, and I STILL need to do some lead lighting with them!

IMG_0719

The blue base here is actually the tortoiseshell pattern I showed you last week. I just stamped over it with White Opaque by Mentality (I can’t get over the silvery sheen to this polish, even if it is a Mentality). Ta-da!
