This might be my favorite nail art for the 31 Day Challenge and possibly for this year altogether? I adore Maleficent as a villain, and in college my dorm hall made a meme where each of us was a disney character; they assigned me Maleficient and made a photo of my face on the character’s body (tinged green, of course). So, when Movie day came up, I knew what I needed to grab! Sadly, this one is from the unposted archives and is actually from 2017 (embarrassing, I know!). The sister post (Sleeping Beauty, of course) will go up the day after the Challenge ends 😀

The design for this was inspired by Definitely Meg  (although her blog appears to have closed down since then) own to trying to figure out what shades of green I could combine to make that glowing background she has! It has been a while since I have tried to negative space flames, and I forgot how time consuming it was! Also, do not try to freehand a raven, it is difficult!

~ Green holo topper: ORLY – Sparkling Garbage
~ Pastel green: Zoya – Tiana
~ Purple holo: LA Girl – Purple Effect
~ Purple creme: Formula X – Ignition
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black

That is all for today, but the rest of this week should also be a bunch of impressive manicures (if I do say so myself)! Hope you enjoyed!

In Tron

The title of this amuses me…the design was loosely inspired by art from Tron Legacy (someday I will freehand some Tron lines and light cycles) with a dark background and bright blue with hints of orange. However, an intron is part of a gene that is coded to become a protein in biology, which just makes me smile!

Anyway, this was done for “movie” day of the 31 Day Challenge. I know today is book day, and I really wanted to honor one of my favorite authors, Marion Zimmer Bradley, but I just couldn’t work up the energy to freehand some awesome scenery. Sorry! So movie it is.

I also don’t know why I situated on Tron, it was just the first movie with a really cool aesthetic image that popped in my head.

Hope you enjoyed! And we are almost done with the 31 day challenge. This is very sad for me, because a lot of my favorite nail blogs/IGs only really post nail art daily during September, and otherwise I have to wait weeks to see new art!

***sorry this post is late, my wordpress just broke! I wasn’t able to post this at all on either of my two browsers…apparently only chrome will work. Go figure. Hopefully chrome keeps working so I can keep posting, but it has been a painful day!***

So Jafar? Coolest villain outfit. It’s dark and creepy with lots of gold and red. Also his facial hair is EPIC. That said, it was darn difficult to paint!

Most versions of Jafar that I could find used in nail art were either too simple, too complex (I cannot paint faces) or just boring. So, I mostly made this up!

My pinky is supposed to be Jafar’s body, but since he is super freaky skinny, it mostly just looks like a weird hourglass? My ring finger has his hat, and the beginning of his awesome red feather. The middle finger is supposed to be his snake staff, but my snake-skin stamp was misbehaving. Pointer is the top of Jafar’s outfit and his awesome beard. The thumbs it intended to be a VERY stylized Iago, the obnoxious parrot.

Here, again, I did not write down which polishes I was using as I painted! I can guess at most of them, but I don’t know if it matters. Let me know if there are any ones you are curious about.

Out of all the Disney manis I have geared up and planned, only this one and the 101 Dalmatians one had better heroes/princesses than villains! All the other manis, the villains look a lot better. You can tell where my loyalty lies! Hope you enjoyed!

Cruella deVille

This is actually the first of the “newer” Disney manis that I did! I found the previous two (memo and dalmatians) in my unposted folder and decided to use them as the jumping to point to EVEN MORE DISNEY.

I actually think I ended up doing paired manis for almost everything at this point (heroine + sidekick and then one for the villain). I am not shy to say that most of my villain manis came out better than my heroine manis 😀

Obviously, this is the companion post to Wednesday’s 101 dalmations! This was inspired by Cruella deVille. You don’t get to see my thumb because it was an idea that did NO pan out properly. The rest of the mani was inspired by Hot Pink Zebra Polish!

The question becomes: do I want to post ALL THE DISNEY MANIS in a row? Or do a disney week per month? I don’t know! I guess we shall see next week :-D. Any requests? Specific movies you guys want to see? Painting disney is fun!

101 Dalmatians

Another Disney mani that I’ve been sitting on since 2016…July, actually. How sad is that? These are so cute though!

I wanted to do each collar a different color, but when I went back and looked, only the mom and dad dog (Perdita and Pongo) had really distinct collars that were not just the same as all the puppies!

The design itself was inspired by @banicured_. Puppies! And Disney! I’ve wanted a dog for a long time, and this makes it worse…only, I can’t imagine that I wouldn’t end up with dog hair ruining my manis!

I thought about writing “101” on my thumb, but honestly, this was surprisingly quick and easy and I didn’t want to ruin it with trying to make words! Or numbers. Either way.

Did any of you guys have a favorite puppy from 101 Dalmations? Hope you enjoyed!

Have some animated-film nail art! I don’t actually know why I thought I’d be able to do Stitch’s face well…I am really really bad at drawing faces even on PAPER much less on NAILS. Oh well! Even if he looks like a little monster, it is still cute.

This was inspired by tinas_polish, and her Stitch is ADORABLE. Unlike my demon-spawn (which is technically l accurate, but I was trying to go for cute).

I think I have 1-2 more animated film manis ready to post after this Challenge is over! Soooo cloooose…lets see if I can make it through!

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

So, I know this is more of a movie than a song, but it was actually the song I had playing when trying to decide what to do for the “song” prompt for the 31 day challenge!

I went ahead any grabbed the closest thing I have to “For Audrey” from China Glaze, which happens to be I Need A Refresh-Mint by Wet n’ Wild. Every time I use this teal, I am reminded why I never use this teal. The brush is too fat, mine has messed up bristles, and the polish NEVER DRIES. Like, NEVER. I need to get For Audrey.

Regardless of my polish woes, this didn’t come out too badly! The color combo is pretty, and it is certainly song-inspired.

Hope you enjoyed! My surgical shelf exam is tomorrow and I am freaking out, so this post (and tomorrow’s) are very short!

Aka Toy Story nails! I know I can do better than this (my proportions are off) but they make me happy, so be it!

I got my inspiration from Trashedandlacquered, but I can’t find the original design! Oops. These are supposed to be the little green alien squeeze toys, but I made both their antennae and ears too big. Maybe I’ll try this again at some point (although I doubt it…) and do it better? I already went back and edited my nails after adding top coat. I really should have looked at a photo first!

Someday (soon?) I’ll do a Pixar and/or Disney nail art marathon. It’ll be great. Any requests? :-p

The Matrix

This was inspired by the movie The Matrix, because it is frankly shameful that I haven’t done nail art on it yet! All great movies deserve nail art!

Putting this together was rather hard, because I had to go through and carefully acetone-remove some of the 1’s and 0’s, and hand-color in tiny green rectangles! That being said, my boyfriend just HAD to point out that in The Matrix the falling lines of code were a mix of numbers and letters, not just 1’s and 0’s. I work with what I’ve got!

As of yesterday afternoon, I officially have a PhD! I am now Dr. Eva.That is a huuuuge load off my back (I slept really well last night) so yay!

Hope you enjoyed!

Finally, the second Star Wars mani! After the first one took so long (it was totally worth it) I decided to so something a bit simpler on my other hand. Lightsabers!

The design was inspired by Moustachemanis. I thought it was both easy and clever!

I started with a base of whatever color I wanted the lightsaber to be. Once that was dry, I added thick striping tape and painted black holo polish over it, and then removed the tape. The details of the lightsaber handle were added  by hand once the black had dried somewhat.

I also had to figure out how I wanted to do Kylo Ren’s lightsaber. I think (after having seen the movie) that the red laser crossbars on my thumb are certainly too long, but I like it anyway.

Hope you enjoyed! A winter-appropriate mani is on its way for tomorrow. 🙂

“Can you paint with all the colors of the wiiiiiiind”. Today is movie day, and of course I had to do something Disney (well, or Pixar) and since my boyfriend is out missing (aka at work even though I painted this over the weekend) I thought I’d do a homage to his least-favorite disney movie, Pocahontas! In his words: it’s as if someone made a movie about the holocaust where the jews and germans made friends and no one died. So, I get it, but I still think the movie is beautiful.

Unfortunately, I don’t own a color even close to Pocahontas’ skin tone, so I went darker rather than lighter. Despite that, I think the end product looks ok!

From pinky to thumb, we have the end of her dress, her necklace, her arm tattoo, the top of her dress, and some semblance of hair in the wind. Or maybe the branches of Grandmother Willow, I don’t actually know which! Free-form wavy things.

Toothless – 31DC2014

During the “inspired by a movie day” I discovered the nail art that I just had to try myself: More Nail Polish’s Toothless mani from the movie How To Train Your Dragon. I cheated a little, using a black slightly textured base, but I love how this came out and the inspiration is awesome!

Her inspiration came from this particular picture of toothless. I tried to mimic the same one:

This mani was much easier than I though it would be, thanks mostly to a polish I was recently sent to review! Well, more to nail art with. The lovely Hillary at Mentality sent me the Textured Earth Tones collection, so I have many textured matte polishes to play with! I will open this by saying that over the course of the next two or so weeks you guys will be seeing a LOT of matte manicures! Although Mentality states that these are “textured,” I think they have more of a crushed satin texture than the gritty texture we are used to with Zoya and OPI and the like. I will be doing a comparison post between creme/matte/textured/these guys shortly so you can see what I mean. ANYWAY. The base of Toothless is the slightly textured black matte polish Asphalt.

I will be doing a full review post of all 12 of these polishes once I am doing testing them all. For now, I will just say that Asphalt is definitely a black matte polish with subtle but cool-looking texture. This is two thin coats. One warning with these polishes: you get three passes with the brush (center, right, left) before it starts pulling on the previous polish. So go fast and you will have no problems at all, but don’t try to overwork them!

The rest of the design was painted on with various green polishes, blue, and some gold and white. The scales were done with blobs of top coat over Asphalt.

I love how this mani came out! And I love the inspiration (from both the movie and More Nail Polish). I hope you enjoyed!

I am glad to be done with the 31 Day Challenge….two full challenges within 3 months is probably more than I can handle. I am very much looking forward to NOT posting on weekends, and getting to play with my new pretties! May the dragon be with you!

The Fifth Element – 31DC2014

Today’s challenge was “movie” and so I went ahead and picked The Fifth Element. It is a truly wacky nerd movie, and I’ve seen it at least 5 times. It is not so much that it is my favorite movie…more that there are some iconic images from it that I thought would translate well to nail art!

For those of you who HAVE seen the movie, I would like to hope that most of my nails are recognizable. My pinky, pointer, and thumb are the 4 symbols that create the Divine Light. My middle and ring fingers are outfits that Leeloo wears at various points…the white rubber band suit (totally NOT the official name) and the orange swiss cheese suit (also, not official).

~ Nude: Wet n’ Wild – Private Viewing
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow Me White
~ Orange: Nubar – Hot Orange

This mani was very simple, although it was hard to free-hand the tiny lines and squiggles! Anyway, I hope you enjoyed!

Nerdtastic Tuesday: C3P0

Today is the final installment of Nerdtastic Tuesday! As I mentioned a few weeks ago, my boyfriend and I went as R2D2 and C3P0 for halloween! He likes to pretend he interprets my awkward nerd-speak in to normal person English (which honestly, he kind of does). So he had to be the “human cyborg relations” part of the costume! I made my nails to match.

These nails were surprisingly easy, given that I could find very few templates on the internet! When I try something new I usually search for it first to give me ideas. It looks like people don’t tend to put very accurate C3P0 on their nails!

So, I based it off images from the movie. It isn’t perfect, but I’m happy with how they came out!

Again, I did my thumb slightly differently…I didn’t want a super-fat C3P0 (it seemed wrong somehow) so I did his centerpiece instead!

  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black

  2. Add horizontal line and eye ridges/nose in brown
  3. Add yellow dots for eyes
  4. Add black dot for pupil and small black rectangle for mouth

Nerdtastic Tuesday 7: R2D2

For Halloween, my boyfriend and I dressed as R2D2 and C3P0. Of course, I had to do my nails appropriately! I present to you: R2D2.

These nails took 1.5 hours. That is the longest I have spent in quite a while…and I think it was worth it! I have a tutorial at the bottom of this post if you want to check it out!

I started with a silver base…A England Excalibur. This was a polish I never wanted, but it came in a set that I got on sale. How is it that the polishes I get as a byproduct of the ones I want are ALWAYS the ones I use most? I think this is overall one of my most used polishes. Crazy.

Anyway. To get the clean blue central line and the white border, I used striping tape. Everything else was free-handed (hence the long time).

I wanted to make my R2D2 nails as accurate as I could, so I kept running from the bathroom to my bedroom to look at images from the movie! My boyfriend was thrilled :-p

  • Silver: A England – Excalibur
  • White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
  • Blue: Sinful Colors – Endless Blue
  • Red: Pure Ice – Siren
  • Dark silver: Nails Inc – Trafalger Square

R2D2 Tutorial

  1. Using two pieces of striping tape, tape off a thin line in the middle of the nail.
  2. Paint the area between the two pieces of tape blue, paint the tip of the nail white.
  3. QUICKLY remove the tape! (Especially if you are using Sinful Colors – Endless Blue. Amazing color, but dries too fast for its own good!)
  4. Paint on a rhomboid (larger end towards the bottom) with blue polish at the top of the silver part of the nail.
  5. Paint 5 rectangles using blue polish, one of them just off-center slightly larger than the others. Make sure to leave a gap next to the larger rectangle.
  6. Using grey metallic polish and a dotting tool, add a large dot in the center of the blue rhomboid and in the empty spot in the line of blue rectangles (see the image in Step 5 and Step 6). Also add two very small dots to the bottom of the blue rhomboid.
  7. Add a large red dot to the center of the large rectangle.
  8. Add three thin parallel blue lines that cover the middle half of the white portion of the nail
  9. Draw one thicker blue line perpendicular to the ones you drew in Step 8. Then outline (in black) two larger rectangles perpendicular to the parallel lines from Step 8 (one on each side) and two smaller ones towards the center. If you are confused, look at the picture. Or look up R2D2 online :-). Top coat and voila!

I am really quite proud of these. Hope you enjoy!

Every year, I pick my favorite movie of the year. This year, hands down, the winner was Disney’s recent movie Frozen. It is amazing. The animation is fantastic, the singing is mind-blowing (more on that later), and the plot is awesome (and feminist!). I have been singing the songs from it for two weeks now. If you like Pixar movies, go see it. Disney took another Pixar idea and made it their own…complete with pre-movie short! My design is modeled on the clothing worn by the two main characters.

My accent nail is Anna’s dress, which she wears for most of the movie. The rest of the nails are Elsa’s dress, from after she accepts her place as the snow queen. Although you can barely tell, underneath all that glitter is a blue-to-teal gradient! I am very proud.

In short, Frozen is the tale of two orphaned princesses, one with power and one without, who try to save their kingdom from ice. They are both helped and hindered by men, a snowman, a reindeer, and trolls. The best part of the movie, by far, is the singing. The lead (Elsa) is played by Idina Menzel, known as the original Elphaba in Wicked and Maureen in RENT. And boy, can she sing.

  • Pale blue glitter: Sinful Colors – Cinderella
  • Gold: Maybelline – Bold Gold
  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
  • Green: Zoya – Holly
  • Pink: Petites Color Fever – Raspberry Ice
  • Purple: Nabi – Purple
  • Light blue: Essie – Full Steam Ahead
  • Blue: Zoya – Rocky
  • Teal: Zoya – Wednesday
  • Large holo glitter: Wet n’ Wild – Kalidascope
  • Teal holo glitter: Orly – Sparkling Garbage

Needless to say, I love this mani! Hope you enjoyed, and I strongly recommend the movie!

—If you have no, pretty please go vote for my nails! Just enter your name, email, and select “flightofwhimsy” from the drop down menu. ❤ thank you!—

I wanted to put Number One Nemesis by OPI to good use. I don’t own any glittery grays, but this polish spoke to me of spooky skies. What better then, than Batman!

Number One Nemesis is a truly beautiful polish. I was expecting a rather dull grey with gold overtones…and I got a microscopic rainbow. From far away this polish is just a glittery gray, but close up it is STUNNING. Hints of green, pink, orange, and gold glitter against a deep silver base. Two coats, easy application. I think this might make my top 10 polishes of the year.

I added the batman symbol to my accent nail and thumb, while adding bat ears (outlined in yellow) to the other nails. I tried to make the black glow-in-the-dark…but black doesn’t like to glow. And my glowing polish is apparently weak. Oops!

  • Grey glitter: OPI – Number One Nemesis
  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
  • Yellow: Revlon – Electric
  • Glow in the dark: Nubar – Glow-it

Quite a few of my male nerd friends stopped to examine my nails while I had these on! Apparently dark colors call to them? Hope you enjoyed!

Day 23: Movie (The Little Mermaid)

For Day 23 of the 31 Day Challenge, I was inspired to do mermaid nails, based (loosely) off The Little Mermaid! I have done mermaid nails in the past, but was not 100% satisfied with them. I like these quite a bit!

Unlike my former attempt, here I kept the entire base coat sparkly and faded to a pale blue rather than to a dark blue creme. The scales are the same (although they are now of mostly uniform size) and I think I was able to color-correct more appropriately!

…And now I have Under the Sea stuck in my head. Ah, there are worse things!

Honestly, these nails are most fitting as I just returned from a weekend at the beach! There is nothing odder than a beach house full of scientists and almost-doctors. Some strange conversations (and far too healthy food!)

  • Teal glitter: Julie G – Mermaid’s Tale
  • Blue glitter: Nabi – Ocean Blue
  • Light blue glitter: Nabi – Petite Teal
  • Gold: Maybelline – Bold Gold
  • Teal: Zoya – Wednesday

So many sparkles! Go check out what the other girls have put together for Movie day!

Minions of Good and Evil

In preparation for my week at the beach with my family, I asked my youngest sister (who also does nail art) what she wanted to see on my nails. Her response? “MINIONS!!!!” I asked her if she would like the yellow or the purple minions (from the newer Despicable Me 2) and she said “both.” So I present, the minions of good AND evil!

As a friend pointed out, we have Dave and Kevin…and some other random ones! They aren’t perfect, but they sure are cute 🙂

I promise, the overalls are indeed dark blue, they are just so dark they appear black! Oops.

  • Yellow: Revlon – Electric
  • Blue: Maybelline – Midnight Swim
  • Black: Julie G – Black Sheep
  • White: Julie G – White Orchid
  • Silver: Nails Inc – Trafalgar Square
  • Purple: Zoya – Malia
  • Grey: Sinful Colors – Muse
  • Dark purple: Sinful Colors – Lets Talk
  • Pink: Sinful Colors – Pink Forever

I think the smiley one on my middle finger is my favorite…but the tongue on my pointer is cute too! Which is your favorite minion?

Enjoy! And happy conquering the world 😀

Remember Remember

Day 30 of the OMD Challenge is “Comic Book.” My favorite comic book (ok, graphic novel) is also one of my favorite movies…V for Vendetta!

As soon as I saw this day in the challenge, I knew what I wanted to do…I just didn’t know if it was up to it! This is the first time I have ever done a face and been happy with it. Look at Guy Fawkes! The mask face was based on a one I found at The Nailasaurus.

The scarlet carson rose on my middle finger was inspired by a 3D rose put together by work/play/polish for Minnie’s Closet. Unfortunately, I didn’t go back to look at hers (I just remembered red textured polish over black) so mine doesn’t look nearly as nice. I’ll have to try this again but do it PROPERLY next time!

The other three nails were just things that reminded me of the comic book that I free-handed…the cross symbol of the government, the red on black “V”, and V’s daggers.

  • Black: Julie G – Black Sheep
  • White: Julie G – White Orchid
  • Red: City Colors – Red
  • Red textured: Julie G – Hot Cinnamon
  • Grey: NYC – Sidewalkers
  • Pink: L’oreal – Orange You Jealous?
  • Silver: Nails Inc – Trafalgar Square

For such a cool looking mani (if I do say so myself), I used remarkably few colors!  Enjoy!
