Negating the Flowers

I never do negative space. NEVER. But I saw these nails by UrbanNailArt and I knew that I had to recreate them. Unfortunately, I don’t have even close to the same stamps for either the flowers or the gold, so I winged it! I wish the lines of my flowers were a little thicker and those of my vines were a bit thinner, but overall I’m pretty happy! The gold is Born Pretty Store gold powder (serious I am obsessed with stamping with this stuff) over black, but you can’t see the black! I think in the end the flowers looked like poinsettias, and red and gold are seasonally-appropriate; regardless these were fun to do and fun to wear!

Hope you enjoyed! Be prepared to see a LOT more stamps involving this gold powder (which can be found here for $1.47 for a 0.1g pot) including this Friday’s post. I may be a tiny bit obsessed with it 😀

Red Forest Leaves

Halloween is over…so it is back to standard fall manis! This is one of my recent favorites. I honestly don’t even remember if I showed you guys this polish yet (I don’t think I have…) but I used this crazy glittery multichrome over a dark green and voila, magic! I really should post my nail art in order at some point. Basically it is a green/gold mutlichrome on its own, but over a dark polish it turns into red/gold/green and its fall magic in a bottle 😀

~ Dark green: ILNP – Ski Lodge
~ Red/gold/green shimmer: Ethereal – Rainforest
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
~ Stamp: UC – Lovely Leaves 2

I am not usually brave enough to stamp negative space designs, because I don’t have true stamping polish (i just use mostly dried up bottles of black and white standard polish)…but uber chic plates are just so perfectly etched that they work anyway. That’s it for today, hope you enjoyed!!

Exploding Pastels

I have failed, slightly. I managed to make every day of posting line up with the corresponding day of the 31 Day Challenge, except this. The final day, and I have failed! Really, I just did not have time to make a tutorial, so I decided to instead go with the 31st day of the Challenge prompt, honor nails you love.

This nail art was inspired by @urbannailart and other than not having the best hand at curlicues yet, I actually think I did it justice! I need a grainier black holo, apparently. I adore most things that Urban Nail Art puts together, they are both colorful and innovative!

~ Sheer nude: Sephora X – Marvelous
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ White: LA Girl – White On
~ Pastel green: Maybelline – Green with Envy
~ Blue: KBShimmer – I’d Rather be with Blue
~ Pastel purple: Sally Hansen – Lacey Lilac
~ Pastel pink: Wet n’ Wild – Tickled Pink
~ Pastel yellow: Maybelline – Citrus Collide
~ Black holo: A England – Fated Prince

Of course, the sun did not cooperate, so there are not as many photos as I would like, sorry! Overall, I hope you enjoyed my nail art for the 31 Day Challenge as much as I enjoyed creating them! The next few weeks will be not nearly as pretty; all my good art is used up :-p. Phew! Also, apparently yesterday was my 7th blogaversary. 7 years of Flight of Whimsy! I am almost impressed with myself!

From the Bottom

I had such high hopes for this mani, and they just didn’t pan out! Turns out tiny thin lines are HARD. Especially with slightly goopy polish. Oh well!

I was trying to imitate this design by Kira Sweet. I have  to assume she used either acrylic or paint and not polish to get those tiny lines! My freehand just can’t measure up

The base color here is another of my new OPI polishes, Yank my Doodle. I really wanted this one when I saw it in the store because it looked like a fun mix between coral, orange, and brown. Think of the possibilities! The truth is though, I don’t actually much like it on my nails :-/ its a little too dark. That being said, it self-leveled nicely and covered well in three thin coats. Maybe I’d like it better if I liked the nail art more?

The white used here was my standard Snow me White by Sinful Colors…which I can no longer find at my local Rite Aid! So now where do I get my white when this one runs out? *gasp*

Anyway, even if this isn’t the best mani ever, I hope you enjoyed it! I should stay away from super intricate freehand for the near future :-p

Pink Rocks

So, I was trying (yet again) to recreate this mani by Sassy Shelly and yet again I failed. I need the right stamps and I don’t have them! Lets be honest, I am going to try this again with the colors I was originally going to use and a different stamp *sigh*

I won’t bother listing my colors or my stamps because they are unrecognizable after the number of ways I tried to save this mani. Suffice to say I need to stop playing around and just make up my mind and go for it!

Honestly, I didn’t write down the polishes that I used for this. The pink creme is a Clinique mini from a promotional set my mom gave me.

The only thing that saves this mani at all is the pink shimmer I threw over my nude nail. I wish I could remember what I used! Possibly Mist by Chameleon but I really don’t know…that is a VERY old polish!

Win some, lose some. This wasn’t QUITE bad enough to be set aside for Fail Week (there will be one of those coming soon). Enjoy!

Negative Space Flowers

These came out cute! Although, sadly, they were cuter in my head. I just wanted something colorful and spring-y! I do wish that I had a left a bit more space between the flowers on some of my nails, but oh well.

The art is inspired by @lifeisbetterpolished, who has apparently changed her ID to @withlovekarissa and I had to hunt around and make sure I wasn’t tagging someone who stole her photos!

Anyway. Flowers, and negative space. I don’t usually go for negative space designs, but putting this on a white background seemed too…jarring.

~ Sheer nude: Formula X – Marvelous
~ Pink: Wet n’ Wild – Tickled Pink
~ Orange: Wet n’ Wild – Sunny Side Up
~ Yellow: WOW – #301
~ Green: Essie – The More The Merrier
~ Blue: Essie – Rock the Boat
~ Purple: Essie – Full Steam Ahead

It is amusing that 90% of the colors I used came from two pastel collections (Wet n’ Wild and Essie)! I should go back to buying collections that come out with rainbow colors with the same finish, it makes for the best nail art! Hope you enjoyed!

Lace Negative Space

This mani is a bit odd…it looked awesome in person, but the photos all came out weird! I’ve posted the ones that look best, but it still doesn’t capture how cool these actually looked.

The art itself was inspired by Baroquen Nails, as all the best negative space manis are 🙂

To make this, I started with two coats of a sheer nude, then two coats of a frankened sheer black jelly (making the right tone of jelly took forever!). Next, I stamped the lacy pattern, and then freehanded the red. Finally, I added the 3D bits!

~ Nude: Sephora X – Marvelous
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ Red: Confetti – Maquerade Ball
~ Stamp: BC – 10

Hope you enjoyed! I doubt you’ll be seeing much negative space in the near future, as of right now my nails are a blotchy odd mix of yellow and bright pink. Silly staining polish!

Black Spikes

My poor mother saw these nails while I was editing them over the holiday break and was very displeased. She said they look dangerous. Goal achieved!

This bit of art was inspired by La Paillette Frondeuse. I loved her nails, so I had to try them myself! I don’t usually have any actually naked nail showing…but since this was only a bit around the nail bed and that somehow isn’t stained right now, I went for it.

These nails ended up looking cool, but very strange. I don’t know that I would wear these to anything other than a party! So, happy start to New Years week!

~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ Silver: Revlon – Metallic
~ Black with glitter: Sinful Colors – Secret Admirer

In other news, one of my nails broke off at the corner, so I am trying to work around it! Unfortunately, you can really still see it here so I might just have to file my poor nails down 😦

Soul on Fire

I kept thinking of the song “Red and Black” from Les Miserables, so I picked a random verse and made it the title! The song is incredible (ok, the whole musical is incredible) but I didn’t think a title of “red the color of desire, black the color of despair” was really what I was going for!

This negative space mani was inspired by Sassy Shelly. I spent a lot of time deliberating over my accent color choice, and I can’t help but think that maybe I should have gone for a neon (rather than a more elegant red). Still looks good, but doesn’t pop as much as Shelly’s!

The only difficult part of this mani was the nude base…it is a very sheer color that I wanted to use to whiten my nail a bit, but it took 4 coats! I think it came out looking rather awesome (and might see some use in more negative space manis in the future) but still, rather a pain.

Hope you enjoyed! And happy Star Wars release day 🙂 (yes of course I have a star wars mani on right now, it just isn’t ready to show yet!)

Green Through Silver

This fun glitzy of nail art was adapted from (aka I modified it quite a bit) lacquer&spice. It was actually a lot of fun! Even if my nails look a bit oddly yellow with two thin coats of Marvelous…anyway.

The base for my two plainer nails here is Veruschka (which is impossible to spell! Oy, Russian…), a BEAUTIFUL deep green matte polish by Zoya. It covers nicely in two thin coats. It dries to the touch very fast (it is a matte) but takes a bit longer to fully dry (and you can’t top coat it without losing the matte finish!). I bought Veruschka to replace my green matte from Mentality that I had to stop using. Veruschka is a brighter green, and honestly a prettier color (it has more depth, if mattes can have depth!). It also becomes possibly my prettiest green polish when top coat is added. Wow.

So, this polish is 100% a win. I like the quasi-sparkly-metallic finish of these older zoya mattes better than the new crushed-pearl finish. The old ones look better with top coat, and even without top coat to me. Hence, I would choose (and did, clearly) Veruschka over Honor (the new green) but each to their own!

~ Green: Zoya – Veruschka
~ Sheer nude: Sephora X – Marvelous
~ Silver: Revlon – Metallic

The studs were a bit of a problem, as I only had very large and very small ones…all of my mostly-flat studs are neon-colored! So, I took some neon orange studs and painted them with Sterling Silver by Sally Hansen. Ta-da, silver studs! Pain in the butt though.

In other news…it is very very hard to find a wedding photographer who is good in low light. I know planetariums are hard to take pictures in, but this is driving me nuts!! Anyway. Enough venting, hope you enjoyed the art!

Racing Stripe Flakie

Today’s them in the OMD2 Challenge was “negative space.” This prompt had me worried, since my nails are kinda…um…stained. And pitted. And really there is a reason I always wear manicures! But I found a solution, one that exposes minimal nail surface and I had been dying to try…racing stripes!

The thought here is that you have two stripes of color up the side, something different in the middle, and a bit of exposed nail between them. I cheated a bit and used a nude shimmer over my naked nail, and then striping tape to delineate the sections. My initial plane was just to use my rainbow flakie, but it wasn’t dense enough after 3 rather substantial brush-overs, so I added my blue/green flakie as well.

Although many of the designs I see popping up over the internet matte this particular design, I actually rather like the shiny version better! I did matte it just in case, but still. That being said…my matte coat is dead. It is a dense thick gloppy mess. I bought a new one (it is on my pinky) but it doesn’t mattifying nearly as much as my dearly beloved and departed Matte-ly In Love polish. Does anyone have any matte top coat suggestions? I need a new one!

  • Red: OPI – Visions of Love
  • Rainbow flakie: piCture pOlish – Festival
  • Blue/green flakie: Zoya – Maisie
