Skyline Sunset

Remember how I said on Monday that most of my nail art was mimicking someone or another? Well, todays post is a good example of that!

This design was inspired by Cathy at More Nail Polish, which I figured was fitting since she is usually the queen of the 31 Day Challenge (although she is participating late this year since she is on an extended vacation at the moment)! Also, I just love cityscape nail art.

~ Pastel blue: Zoya – Blu
~ Bright pink: Zoya – Kelsey
~ Bright purple: Sinful Colors – Dream On
~ Bright blue: Sinful Colors – Endless Blue
~ Black: Sinful Colors- Black on Black
~ Holo: Orly – Sparkling Garbage

This has also reminded me that I really need to invest in a sparkly holo top coat, sparkling garbage is excellent but it turns everything under it a shade of pale teal! Not ideal when working with pinks. :-p Hope you enjoyed!

Silver Starred Sky

There is a lot going on with this mani, and it didn’t quite come out how I wanted! I was swatching a beautiful new polish that I didn’t want to completely cover up…and so the galaxy mani that I tried to make ended up looking meh. But…silver holographic stars fix everything, right?

Anyway, the base here is yet ANOTHER new polish, this time from ILNP, called Downpour. When I first opened the package, I think this was the polish that drew my eye the most! It is such a vibrant deep metallic-finished blue, and has copious holographic shards. I even took a macro photo just to show off how the metallic finish goes over the buried shards. I die. I love this polish. I used three thin coats for depth, but my nail line was covered in two. I should probably mention, this polish was surprisingly easy to remove as well!

I then added on lots of different shades of blue to make a galaxy design, but decided it looked too varied and more or less covered everything with Yummy, which was a mistake. I wish I had stopped at an earlier part in my design! It looks ok, but certainly not breaking any records.

When that was done, I placed some silver holographic stars that I was sent to review from the Born Pretty Store. They come in a little pot with three sizes (small, medium, and large…all three are visible on my thumb). They are awesome! I am only sad that I didn’t work with very wet base coat when I initially put the stars down, as they stick up a bit because they are so large (especially the biggest size), but I think that’s my fault! I imagine I will be using these whenever I put together a galaxy mani in the future.

~ Dark blue holo: ILNP – Downpour
~ Dark blue metallic: Zoya – Tart
~ Blue creme: Zoya – Ling
~ Light blue creme: Zoya – Yummy
~ Pastel blue creme: Zoya – Blu
~ Holo top coat: ORLY – Sparkling Garbage
~ Silver holo: Color Club – Harp On It

Prior to this, it had been such a long time since I did a galaxy mani! I have to say, doing it with red this past summer was more fun than with blues…as the sky is blue and so everyone can already imagine what that looks like :-p. Oh well. Downpour is stunning and now I have fancy stars for my sky!

I hope you enjoyed! And if you are interested in picking up some holographic stars for yourself, head over to the Born Pretty Store where you can find them for $1.49.

Winged Love

In my head, the name of this mani is all Shakespeare-ified (Wing’ed Love) but I figured adding an apostrophe would confuse everyone…and I left it in normal English. Anyway, today starts my Valentine’s manis and I wanted to do something with birds!

Basically, I found this small stamp I had never used (despite owning the plate for years) and wanted to create a mani around it. That is the two doves image on my middle finger. I ended up using birds from 3 different stamping plates and leaves from a fourth. So. Many. Stamps!

This mani also uses the first of the polishes that I won from the Nail Polish Canada holiday nail art challenge! I ended up with 21 new polish (omg) about 2/3 of which I adore and 1/3 of which I would never have picked. This is one of the ones I would not have gone for. This is Once in a Blue Moon by ORLY, and is actually a nice pale blue-grey color, and is a two-coater which is great. However…it is also a frost. Can the nail polish community at large just agree to stop making frosty polishes? There are brush strokes all over the place and I would much rather see this as a shimmer or metallic, or even a creme. Also, I hate the ORLY brushes, they are far too wide for my poor pinky nail! All-in-all, I don’t know that I am going to try very hard to keep this particular color…it might end up going to my sister.

~ Blue: ORLY – Once in a Blue Moon
~ Green: Zoya – Shawn
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ Pink: Revlon – Bubbly
~ Stamps: BM – XL472, BC – 06, BP – L067, EdM – 07

Now I sort of wish I had tried to double stamp the birds in white, but it looks alright as it is! I am also glad that the border images from BM – XL472 seem to fit my nails :-).

That’s all for today, hope you enjoyed and get ready for more love-themed manis!

I realize that this is both blue and tan, but give JUST HOW MANY BLUE POLISHES I USED (omg) I am counting it as the day 5, Blue, post for the 31 Day Challenge.

This design was inspired by majikbeenz who actually has a lovely tutorial! Which of course I only found after I was done since I was simply using a pinterest pin. Whoops!

I basically started with a light blue base and then painted on each of the other blues. And glitters. And flakies. Oh my! I think what really makes this is the textured sand (I knew I could still find uses for those textured polishes!) and the white surf at the border with the sand.

What do you guys think? A fitting “blue” day? I like it at least :-p

Celestial Spheres

Looking back over nail artists who inspire me, I’ve realized that a number of the women who’s nail art I loved years ago and who eventually persuaded me to try my own hand at nail art have faded out of existence. The two biggest names that make me very sad are WorkPlayPolish and KaylaShevonne, both of whom were extraordinary. Even the ones who are still around post infrequently, like ChalkboardNails. One of the only ladies who predates me and has stuck around posting amazing nail art day after day is Cathy at More Nail Polish. So this mani is inspired by and in homage to her!

I actually went through the past 3 or so years worth of her nail art….at least what is on instagram. I personally hate instagram, I like being able to say things about my nail art and post more than one photo…and IG takes all of that away. However, it is good for quick scrolling!

While looking, I found a number of things I liked…one of which reminded me that I hadn’t worked with blue recently AND that I had this really cool stamp that I had never actually used! So here we are, with some art inspired by MoreNailPolish.

~ Darkest blue: Maybelline – Midnight Swim
~ Dark blue: Zoya – Sia
~ Blue: Zoya – Ling
~ Glitter: ORLY – Sparkling Garbage
~ Gold: Essie – Good as Gold
~ Stamp: BM – 610

Anyway, this concludes the 31 Day Challenge of 2016. I almost made it! *sigh* who knows what I’ll be up to next year, but hopefully I’ll still be posting! It makes me sad that so many women give up on their blogs, and that they do so without warning. I want to know where all the people I used to follow have gone off to! If I ever do have to stop posting (which I’m sure will happen during intern year of residency), I will at least give warning, I promise!

Blue! And teal! I am sooo glad I wrote down all the names of the polishes that I used when I made this, because there is no way I would remember them now.

This was the base of the mani that I used for my pshiiit-inspired design from Nail Art Fashion Week. As I was putting together the teal an blue splotches and glitter and flakies I really liked how it looked…so I took some photos! I usually only do that if I’m afraid that I’ll mess up the final result and an intermediate step looks good…in this case it gets it own post!

So anyway, lots of teal. I used the stamper smush (technical term) method to get the colors on. It worked great this time, but I’ve actually tried it again since and it looked awful. Some colors work and some don’t I guess!

~ Pastel teal: Maybelline – Green with Envy
~ Light teal: Zoya – Wednesday

~ Teal metallic: Petites Color Fever – Figi
~ Teal glitter: Julie G – Mermaid’s Tale
~ Dark teal: A England – Saint George
~ Teal flakie: Zoya – Maisie

Also, adding Sparkling Garbage to the top of ANYTHING makes it magic. My friends and I made some dragon eggs (more about that later) a week ago and we ended up topping a dark green metallic with Sparkling Garbage…it was magic.

Splotches and Chevrons

Today’s prompt for Nail Art Fashion Week 2016 was “style icon.” Now, anyone who knows me knows I have 0 style sense (if it fits and has some type of glitter or pattern on it, I’ll wear it), and that I don’t care to get one. I wear sneakers with skirts and everyone else can just deal with it :-p

So, I had to think of something else for “style icon” and of course, I ended up with nail art style icon! Which means I had to mimic something by pshiiit…she is not my favorite nail art blogger, but its a toss-up between her and Very Emily who’s overall nail art style I like best! Everyone else (myself included) tends to vary widely in what we do for art…but pshiiit (and Emily) have a distinct feel to their nail art that I just love! In pshiiit’s case, it tends towards chevrons and pops of color or glitter.

Anyway, today’s nail art was inspired by pshiiit, so here we go! Lots of teal, some glitter, and some chevrons. And also a funny title because I couldn’t think of anything else.

Hope you enjoyed! Technically NAFW2016 goes through Sunday, but I never post on weekends AND I know nothing about the Fall 2016 collection (nor do I care that much. Fashion is wayyyy beyond me) so this is it!

Hanging Vines of Teal

So, unlike the past four days (which were all painted within a week of each other), these nails were only done three weeks ago! Sometimes I accidentally cut my nails too short when I am trying to trim them. I figure these mostly count as tiny nails!

The idea here was to do a waterfall mani a-la-Nailasaurus only even my short nails are too long to make that look appear good! So I added a second waterfall layer and purposefully made some of my lines squiggly…so now we have vines.

Someday, I do want to try a proper waterfall mani. Sammy makes them look so good! Maybe I should try using my dominant hand to paint them though, I don’t know how good I’ll be at straight thin lines with my left hand.

Phew! So many colors! Hope you enjoyed! Next week we are back to our regularly scheduled medium-length-nails nail art.

New Years Eve! It only made sense to post fireworks for today 😀

Now, I cheated for this. The gold and rose gold are stamps! Well, one stamp that I set up in a gradient. All the bright flecks of color come from the purple base, which is three thin coats of Fowl Play! I don’t use this polish nearly as much as I should. Its quite pretty.

The stamp that I used was from the hehe plate 024 from Lady Queen Beauty that I said I had used nearly every design from in the past month. Ta-da, firework design! It’s so cool.

Hope you enjoyed! And go enjoy the fireworks and bright lights 🙂 Happy New Years!

Dragonfly Wings

It’s wing day! I’ve done butterfly wings at least three times…possibly more. So this time I decided to mix it up a bit and try dragonfly wings a-la-kbkopija. Really, there are three differences…sorta. The wings start at the free-edge not the cuticle (although that was just so its easier to photograph), the wings are green, and the bottom edge also has dots.

I really like how these came out! I knew there was a reason I do wings so frequently :-p I started the whole thing with a three-color green/teal gradient, although you can’t see much of it in the final product. It still adds a bit of variety!

Every time I do wings, I just want to do more. If there is one type of nail art I can do…bug wings! Odd specialty :-p

Orange Angles

It’s wedding season! Which means I need more teal-and-orange nails because the dress I wear to almost every wedding is orange, and the shoes are teal. It is also the start of the 31 day OMD challenge (which I will be somewhat participating in), and Day 1 is teal! Go figure.

It only occurred to me AFTER I did this nail art that I actually already have a teal holo polish. But I forgot about it (silly me!) and so I used a teal polish with holo over it. Which was still fun, but a bit harder to use with striping tape! I don’t know that I’ve ever tried two colors over striping tape and got it to work.

I started on most nails with a base of Caribbean Frost covered with two coats of Sparking Garbage. Then I went to town with studs and freehanded some triangles because I could. My middle finger got two coats of Thandie and striping tape. Magic!

~ Teal: Wet n’ Wild – Caribbean Frost
~ Holo glitter: ORLY – Sparkling Garbage
~ Orange: Zoya – Thandie
~ Light orange: Maybelline – Bleached in Peach

The studs are from a neon set sold by the Born Pretty Store, and this might the the first good use I’ve had for them! I don’t usually do neon studs 🙂 Hope you enjoyed!

It’s the week of Thanksgiving! What this really means is that I am only working 1.5 days this week…before my parents meet the entire extended family of my fiancé for the first time. Oy! DAMAGE CONTROL. Anyway. I don’t (yet) have special Thanksgiving nails lined up, but I’ll see what I can get done tomorrow! For today I present the wrong type of bird, a peacock rather than a turkey!

This peacock was enabled by my sister, who gave me some water decals a year ago…that I still hadn’t tried! Unfortunately, these are a bit thick (so they don’t lie completely flat on the nail as they should) but they are still stunning. It is a black peacock on a clear background.

I made a teal + glitter base, added the decal, added top coat (to make the decal stay…they liked to slide around) and then went in with a fine detail brush to add some gold to the feathers. Another round of top coat, and voila!

~ Teal: Zoya – Wednesday
~ Glitter: ORLY – Sparkling Garbage
~ Gold: Sally Hansen – Liquid Gold

The decals lasted about 2 days before they started lifting off, a side-effect of the thicker material. But they still looked awesome while they worked!

Last weekend, I attended two weddings. The second one was an Indian wedding, complete with sarees! The bride and groom were kind enough to get me and some of the other “white girls” sarees for the event! Mine was blue, burgundy, and gold. Of course, I had to make matching nails!

The saree was predominately a beautiful blue/teal color, with purple in the borders and a bold golden design. I didn’t copy the design (very intricate!) but I did use the colors in this nail art.

~ Teal: LA Girl – Teal Dimension
~ Purple: ORLY – Fowl Play
~ Gold: Zoya – Ziv

Honestly, my camera had some trouble focusing on my nails they were so glittery! I think it was worth it though 😀 Hope you enjoyed!

Beneath A Purple Sky

*singing* I had a dream I stood beneath an orange sky…Today’s challenge was “galaxy.” I did a galaxy just a few days ago (chronologically…this one was done in June actually) and didn’t want to make another one. So I placed some water decal stars on a purple glittery polish that I don’t use often enough, and voila!

This bit of art combines some fun things…a polish I received from one of the OMD challenge leaders (Jacqui from Craftynail) and a free set of water decals that I got from the Born Pretty Store. [Free? But Eva, don’t you review for them? Why yes reader, I do! But I also order things from them. Last time I placed an order, they sent me FREE decals…these and some odd hello Kitty ones. I can’t even find these for sale…but no complaints! They are adorable.]

The purple color is more accurate in the first two photos. Unfortunately, Fowl Play by ORLY was just not going to come out color-accurate when I started taking pictures in a yellow bathroom! Oof.

That’s all! A fast, quick, sparkly mani. With some epic purple polish.

Half Scale

I really enjoyed my half-gradient/half-dot nails from a few weeks ago, and decided to do a mermaid-themed set when I saw what the Born Pretty Store had sent me for review! The little scales work perfectly 🙂

I started with a holo blue gradient (three colors) which I covered with MORE holo glittery goodness! I then added the scale water decal and top coated. When that was dry, I taped off the side of my nail and added black polish and then dots.

Although I think this mani looks awesome, I had a spot of trouble with the water decal! It is really pretty, but in order to fit my nail the way I wanted, I had to reposition it a few times. It ended up folding in on itself on my pinky, and I couldn’t get it to straighten back out. I do wish the water decal was full-nail rather than only partial, but it is quite fun and definitely beats trying to hand paint little scales!

  • Light blue: Nfu Oh – #65
  • Blue: Darling Diva – Blue Diamond
  • Dark blue: Nabi – Navy Blue
  • Glitter: ORLY – Sparkling Garbage
  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black

If you want some water decals, I recommend this set from the Born Pretty Store. You can find them for $2.29…and I might add, there are some really pretty arabesque decals there too!

Shades of Green

Last year, I did a color blocking + striping tape mani using wayyy too many colors. It was based off a pinterest pin that I have been staring at for, clearly, over a year. I decided to go back to the original design and do it in green (the original was blue) since my attempt a year ago was just a bit too chaotic. Also, I own a lot of greens now 🙂

Really, this was just a lot of fun. I started with my lightest green base, and just freehanded lines where I thought they belonged. After top coat, I added striping tape…and then another layer of top coat. Of course, the striping tape STILL came off in <48 hours, but that always happens.

  • Light green: Essie – The More The Merrier
  • Green: Sinful Colors – Exotic Green
  • Dark green: Sinful Colors – Last Chance
  • Green metallic (under glitter): Zoya – Holly
  • Green glitter: ORLY – Sparkling Garbage

Fun and whimsical! Just how I like it. I think it’s finally time to move that pin into the “yes I’ve completed this mani” pile!

My Favorites: Best Polish of 2013

So, I have only been blogging for a little over a year. Which is the same amount of time I have been doing my nails. This means that my favorites are not necessarily FROM this year, merely that I DISCOVERED them this year. Which is to say that these are my favorite polishes out of the 200 that I currently own (ok, 197 polishes that I own).

2013 Best

Also keep in mind, my criteria for “favorite” is “I would wear this without nail art because it is so darn PRETTY”. Some of these are almost impossible to art with, but I love them anyway!

Honorable mention: these two polishes are not ones I would wear alone, but they are so useful in nail art and such a shocking color that I almost would….
Sinful Colors – Endless Blue

Petites Color Fever – Figi

And now, my top 10 polishes of the year:
#10: Zoya – Faye
I just cannot get over the beautiful duochrome + glitter! The color is a bit pale for my tastes (everything else on this list is a darker color), but this does make my top 10.

#9: China Glaze – Ruby Pumps
Ruby Pumps is actually the ONLY china glaze I own (go figure). It is also the most beautiful deep glittery red, and as I love reds, this had to make the list. It narrowly beat out my second favorite red…Blaze by Zoya.

#8: ORLY – Sparkling Garbage
Although this polish takes quite a few layers to be opaque on its own, the rainbow payoff is worth it! The deep pond glittery look just blows my mind. It also dries smooth and shiny, putting it ahead of most of my linear holo polishes.

#7: A England – Saint George
I love A England polishes (all 3 that I own). I think the color of Saint George is just a bit more unique than Tristam. I will say that Excalibur is my go-to silver stamping polish, but I don’t think I would wear it alone!

#6: Zoya – Alegra
For someone with almost 200 polishes, I have surprisingly few pinks. However, Alegra was a polish I knew I NEEDED to have. Beautiful, glittery, bright, and just generally wonderful. It is pink without being subtle!

#5: Zoya – Valerie
I love a good purple. I own holographic polishes, glitters, shimmers, metallics, cremes…but for some reason, Valerie, with her pink and copper glitter, just stands out.

#4: Julie G – Mermaid’s Tale
Blues and teals make up the vast majority of my polish collection. I love all of them. That being said, the beautiful duochrome glitter in Mermaid’s Tale really calls to me! I don’t use this polish often enough…maybe because I never want to cover it up with art!

#3: butterLONDON – Scuppered
Now we get to the good stuff. Scuppered makes my top three for a few reasons…the glitter load is incredible, the control of the polish is great, and the depth and variety of color is amazing. I would never think to mix copper, pink, and green. But it works. And I love it.

#2: ILNP – Birefringence
This was a hard call. My top two choices for this year are BOTH indy polishes, possibly because they are intended to make a statement! I put this polish second, if only because I do own other multichromes. None are quite as beautiful and spectacular as Birefringence, and none go on quite as well. Also, this polish is blue/purple/green…my favorite combination.

#1: Emily de Molly – Cosmic Forces
I cannot get over this polish. I stalked restocks at Llarowe for weeks trying to get my hands on Cosmic Forces, and I am so glad I did! I don’t own anything like it, with the large holographic glitters, the deep violet jelly base…it’s incredible. I have NO idea how to use it in nail art, but every time I want to just wear something (which granted, is seldom) this is the polish I gravitate towards!IMG_3770

And that is my top 10. How about you guys, any favorites?

(If you want to see all the polishes in my collection, to give you an idea how hard it was to pick and choose, check out the “Polish List” tab at the top of my page!)

Every year, I pick my favorite movie of the year. This year, hands down, the winner was Disney’s recent movie Frozen. It is amazing. The animation is fantastic, the singing is mind-blowing (more on that later), and the plot is awesome (and feminist!). I have been singing the songs from it for two weeks now. If you like Pixar movies, go see it. Disney took another Pixar idea and made it their own…complete with pre-movie short! My design is modeled on the clothing worn by the two main characters.

My accent nail is Anna’s dress, which she wears for most of the movie. The rest of the nails are Elsa’s dress, from after she accepts her place as the snow queen. Although you can barely tell, underneath all that glitter is a blue-to-teal gradient! I am very proud.

In short, Frozen is the tale of two orphaned princesses, one with power and one without, who try to save their kingdom from ice. They are both helped and hindered by men, a snowman, a reindeer, and trolls. The best part of the movie, by far, is the singing. The lead (Elsa) is played by Idina Menzel, known as the original Elphaba in Wicked and Maureen in RENT. And boy, can she sing.

  • Pale blue glitter: Sinful Colors – Cinderella
  • Gold: Maybelline – Bold Gold
  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
  • Green: Zoya – Holly
  • Pink: Petites Color Fever – Raspberry Ice
  • Purple: Nabi – Purple
  • Light blue: Essie – Full Steam Ahead
  • Blue: Zoya – Rocky
  • Teal: Zoya – Wednesday
  • Large holo glitter: Wet n’ Wild – Kalidascope
  • Teal holo glitter: Orly – Sparkling Garbage

Needless to say, I love this mani! Hope you enjoyed, and I strongly recommend the movie!

—If you have no, pretty please go vote for my nails! Just enter your name, email, and select “flightofwhimsy” from the drop down menu. ❤ thank you!—

Day 4: Green (Arabian Garden)

Don’t ask about the title. I thought that the inspiration for these nails looked like something from Arabian Nights…but mine are green! So garden it is. This mani came about as I rummaged through my sister’s collection of polishes to find ones that I loved and wanted to use. No surprise…I go immediately for greens!

The base for this is two coats of Meet Me Under the Mistletoe (why on earth are polish names so long?!) by Orly…and despite having 3 deep greens with some sort of shimmer polishes, I really want this polish! It is a beautiful darkened green base with small gold and green flakies. I know this has been out for a while, but it reminds me of one of my lemmings…Zoya Ivanka. Regardless, this polish is stunning, and dries fast.

I then added two very expensive polishes on top…Viper and Nouveau Riche by Estee Lauder. Viper is so dark green as to almost be black, and is a really luxuriant color. Nouveau Riche looks like Scuppered (butterLONDON) and Faye (Zoya) had a lovechild. It’s beautiful!

The end product is super shiny and rather elegant (despite the glitter).

What do you think? Elegant or just over-the-top? Certainly green!

Hope you enjoyed, and don’t forget to check out the other nail art in the 31 Day Challenge: Green!

Interlaced Dots

Continuing my quest to use polishes my sister owns and I do not, I turned to her neon Milani lacquers. I also wanted another excuse to use Sparkling Garbage by ORLY because…well, rainbow.

I used a neon teal as my base, and painted on one coat of Sparkling Garbage (well, a gradient on the accent nail but you can hardy tell). I then added bright orange dots of different sizes, and filled in the larger ones with more teal.

Unfortunately, I messed up the thumb. I wanted to see what would happen if I added ANOTHER layer of holo goodness, and everything smeared everywhere. Oops!

  • Blue: Milani – Fresh Teal
  • Orange: Milani – Jiffy Orange
  • Holo: ORLY – Sparkling Garbage

This mani is so darn sparkly in the sunlight! Hope you enjoyed!
