Sea or Sky

I kept thinking that this mani looked like swirling sea water (with ice on it) or a fancy stone…and my husband saw celestial bodies and stars. So sea or sky, which do you guys see?

Regardless, I have another new polish to share! This one was sent to me to review from the Born Pretty Store. It’s a thermal polish with copious silver glitter in  it, and is quite pretty! Oddly, when I looked at it online, it looked like a bright blue when warm and a deep purple when cold….but in person, its more of a blue-teal when warm and a deep blue-jean shade of blue when cold. Not as exciting as blue and purple, but still pretty! I wonder if they changed the formulation?

Regardless, 009 by VCND Bluesky covered very nicely in three thin coats. I used thin coats to get maximal glitter coverage! It dries to a semi-matte, but does dry fairly fast. The best part is the glitter spread…I didn’t have to go digging for the larger hex glitters at all, and despite the glitter load the polish spread smoothly. The warm color is a bright teal-leaning blue, while the dark color is the shade of blue jeans. There isn’t a huge difference between the two colors, honestly…but both are pretty and the glitter is really nice!

I couldn’t decide what to stamp, so I did a quasi water-marble instead. I wanted to do blues with silver (and clear to allow the thermal polish to show through) but the silver I grabbed formed these awesome clumps instead of marbling…so I just went with it! It was much more fun making this messy clumpy marble than it was trying to perfect an elegant and smooth water marble, so win!

If you want to pick up this blue glittery thermal for yourself, you can find it at the Born Pretty StoreBorn Pretty Store for $4.99. I think its important to point out that this is a mini bottle (only 7.5ml). You can also use my 10% off code, LY5X31!

Water Wood Grain

For water marble day, I decided to do something a bit different! I wanted to see if I could water marble wood grain. It somewhat worked?

img_4320

I started with a new polish that I picked up earlier this month from the clearance rack at ULTA. I’ve been on the hunt for a slightly nude off-white. This is more nude/peachy than I wanted it, but is not quite a light pink! I also think it is indeed a bit lighter than my lightest nude (Chantal by Zoya) but I’ll need to do a direct comparison since I am currently out of swatching sticks!

img_1178

This polish is called I Nude It by Essense. It is my second essence polish and I had forgotten how much I love them. I used three thin coats but I could have gotten away with two. The polish self-leveled nicely, and the color is a beautiful pale peachy-nude with barely-there golden shimmer (you can see it in the bottle but not really on the nail). I like it!

img_1297

I then went and marbled with three other shades of brown/nude and my clear water marbling polish…which totally overwhelmed the browns. Whoops! So I added a little bit of free-hand brown at the end. I don’t know that I would have said these looked like wood without knowing what I was aiming for, but the definitely count as water marble so it works for the Day 20 of the 31 Day Challenge prompt!

Hope you enjoyed! We are finally just about 2/3 of the way done with this challenge. Lets see if I can make it to the end!

Upon a Purple Sea

Awesomely fun water marble! I knew I wanted to use a bunch of purples and Clearwater by Pipe Dream Polish, but I had a lot of trouble figuring out what to use as the base which would peek through! I had somehow forgotten that I had a light purple scattered holo polish, and it worked beautifully!

IMG_4114

Seriously though, Milani wins the award for “polishes that don’t dry out even if you forget about them for years”. I honestly cannot remember the last time I used this polish (at LEAST a year ago) and it is still as flow-y and wonderful as the day I got it! It also still takes three thickish coats to be opaque :-p

I also managed to dip all 5 fingers in one go! I just kept marbling and swirling. The last (ingenious) step was to circle-swirl the marble, so the nails didn’t look uniform at all. Voila! Super easy.

IMG_4117

Hope you enjoyed! Tomorrows mani is terrible. Potentially terribly awesome (my boyfriend loved it) but it made me cringe to wear it, so here’s your warning!

Curtains of Blue

I have no idea what I was going for here. It was basically “blue water marble gradient!” and “hot pink glitter!” so here we go.

IMG_2125

I wanted to use my hot pink glitter…but I didn’t want to have to layer it and thus spend 45 minutes removing glitter from my nails. So, I laid down a coat of Raspberry Ice (which I had forgotten I owned…a one-coat hot pink metallic? How could I forget about it?) and then one coat of Cranfairy for the base. Glitters galore!

IMG_3795

Once the pinks were dry, I did a shades of blue + clear marble. I should have gone with shades of pink or used a blue base. There is just too much contrast here. Oops!

IMG_2121

I do just need to do a full-blue-gradient water marble (without the clear in between) at some point! It’s been weeks since I’ve done a true water marble without Clearwater!

Dripping Red

I can’t tell if this mani looks horrific or awesome. Something about a red gradient and then black drips…horror movie or edgy?

IMG_1919

I started with a red base (since I wanted even the cuticle edge of my nail to be slightly red), and added a white-red-dark red gradient over it. Once that was dry and top-coated, I did a clearwater + black marble that was super easy…just dragging once through the water! The hardest part was drying to center the drag on my nail.

IMG_2964

I thought it looked a bit too plain, so I added some glitter at the end, which I now regret. Maybe if the glitters were smaller it would look better, but it ended up just looking a bit messy to me! Oops.

Dragonback

Another mani with Clearwater. I *swoon*. Being able to marble over gradients is awesome! Although this is a bit of a franken-mani. It reminds me of the ridges and scales on a dragon, hence the title of the mani.

IMG_1818

I started with a diagonally stripped base of each metallic polish, and then marbled over top. I initially started with ILNP Birefringence (which you couldn’t really see over the colors…it is there on one finger, I didn’t bother removing it). I then tried white AND black. Ta-da! I

IMG_2558

The white creme I used to start with was taking over too much of the water. So I tried two other whites…and they did the same thing. Anyone have a good marbling white? I ended up just going with it anyway, but I wanted thinner lines! To even the white vs. colors out a bit, I went ahead and added dots over the white.

Peeking Rainbows

Today I learned three things: (1) my new top coat dulls holo finish, (2) I really need to only dip one finger at a time in a water marble, and (3) Clearwater by Pipe Dream Polish is amazing.

IMG_1805

I styled this mani after @mrswhite8907, only Pipe Dream Polish stopped carrying the A Night In Vegas Collection (which is SO SAD I REALLY WANTED IT), so I had to make do with polish I already own. It was a pain in the butt. Next time I am not trying orange, I really don’t have any that work!

IMG_2529

That being said…Clearwater is actually magic. I used quite a few polishes here that I have TRIED to use for marbling before, and they have failed to spread. Clearwater, however, magically pushes them apart and makes beautiful concentric circles! Not only that, but it has some magic slow-drying formula that allows it to be manipulated (for you know, dragging purposes) even MINUTES later. And is somehow also anti-bubble when you dip your nails it.

IMG_1807

Ladies, if you like water marbling (or you wish you were better at it… or whatever) I strongly STRONGLY recommend this polish. Its $6. I might buy a backup bottle. It is amazing. And no, I was not sent this for review…I just really like it!

IMG_2535

So, thats all! I have another fun marble with Clearwater coming up probably next week. Because it is made of magic. If you are curious about any of the colors I used today, let me know! I’m not going to list them.
