Rowdy Roses

Technically, I painted these around Valentine’s day. However, roses are good any time, so they are being posted now! In retrospect, I wish I had not made the backgrounds holographic, I think the art would have popped more against a creme background. Live and learn! Besides, I like making my backgrounds more sparkly than would otherwise be indicated :-p

On a separate topic: things are going sideways in the US. At the moment, the city that I live in has a curfew, and honestly all but one of the 4 cities I have lived in at any point in my life are doing the same. The systemic racism and violence is (finally) being called out, which is (sadly) provoking violence. To all my readers in the USA: stay safe, stay strong, and do what you can to support your community. To my international readers: yes, all of this is exactly as terrible as it looks. If you feel so motivated, please encourage your leadership to sanction the USA; sadly I don’t think Trump listens to anything except his pride and his wallet, so if his income can be hurt we might actually see some change.

Scattered Roses on a Field of Gold

I told you there would be more flowers, and here they are! To be fair, I really really like how this mani came out (unlike the other two I posted this week). The theme appears to be color-in-flowers-with-jelly-polish. This manicure also gave me an excuse to play with another new polish :-D. I also almost forgot to post this (oops!) but its technically still Friday!

IMG_5467

I wanted to see if the new pastel-ish multichromes from Emily de Molly we really worth buying…so I bought one that was different than anything else in my collection. Meet Goddess of Rays, an orange-gold-green-emerald pastel almost foil-like multichrome. I have to say, I was impressed! This covered very well in two coats, was only a tiny bit streaky, had a great shift, and was overall a pleasure to wear and a pleasure to look at!

Initially I just added some black stamps, which I deemed too boring. So I decided to fill in the roses with a pink jelly polish, and add some matching dark pink creme dots as the little buds/berries! Ergo this weeks theme. To be fair, this manicure was shifty and awesome and more eye-catching than spring-like. But it fits! Hope you enjoyed 😀

Dividing Roses

Oh how I wish this plate was better etched, the designs are so pretty! This is the companion piece to the pink/periwinkle/purple floral art I posted last week. I liked the stamping plate soo much that I wanted to use it again immediately. Again, it did not work to my satisfaction! Maybe it will work better with more intense dedicated stamping polishes…but I have my doubts.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed the roses! I have decided it is time to post spring-themed manicures (can you tell?) because it is April and I have a bunch of them sitting in my to-be-edited folder.

Fall-themed Roses

I went to a wedding where the bridesmaids were all dressed in different fall colors, and it was stunning! My assigned color was red, but the colors ranged from coral and orange through a deep plum. Of course, I painted my nails to match :-). Oddly enough, the only roses in the actual bouquets (which I helped make) were orange! Go figure.

Red Roses and Black Lace

A member of my husband’s family was very ill, and we were preparing for the likelihood that we would have to attend a funeral within a week. With that in mind, I went for a week-and-a-half with dark, appropriately somber, nails. These nails arose from that period of time, and I am not embarrassed to say that I love them (the person in question passed away later, so these did not end up being funeral nails, merely vampy nails with a funeral in mind).

IMG_7691

Since these were intended for a particular occasion, and to match a particular (black) outfit, I consider them somewhat fashionable, and am posing them for “fashion” day in the 31 Day Challenge!

Dots and Roses on Teal

This caused me soooo many headaches. You can’t tell, but I repainted my pinky 4 times. I started with it teal (because I wasn’t paying attention and I usually start with all my nails the same color). I dinged that, so I painted over it in white. That took 20 minutes to dry so I seriously dinged it and removed the whole mess. Then I just painted it white…and while finishing my other hand accidentally hit the drying white polish against TAPE so it was all over. I finally cleaned it fully (instead of just wiping off the polish), added base coat and painted it white, carefully. And then moved very very slowly for about 20 minutes until it was dry.

IMG_7579

Other than my pinky, this was not a very difficulty manicure! The lines are a stamp, and everything else, while freehanded, was pretty easy. The hardest part was keeping the dots straight on my ring finger and thumb. I do wish I had made the roses larger on my middle finger, but I was having fun with tiny roses! And I am proud of my ring finger. The roses almost look respectable 😀

The design is lifted directly from Paulina’s Passions. It turns out this is from 2014, which tells you a bit about how long it was sitting in my untried ideas! Yikes

I realize that Monday’s post was also a bunch of circles and dots, but this one had MORE dots, so I am posting it for Dot Day! Hope you enjoyed!

Bright Teal and Dark Roses

This was fun, and almost-but-not-quite perfect! Regardless of the imprecations (entirely my fault with color selection) I enjoyed wearing this! I also don’t know why I don’t actually have more floral manicures to post. What have I been painting if not flower?!

IMG_2158

The design was inspired by @ponkle. In retrospect I wish I had used a brighter pink for the base of the roses! This ended up looking almost neon-with-goth because of the dark roses. I love it anyway. Of course, I also cheated. The dots are freehand and everything else is stamping 🙂

Short and sweet today, but with pretty pictures of course! Hope you enjoyed!

Porcelain Roses

This mani is a bit of a funny story. I saw a really pretty design on pinterest, and decided to go try it. On the way to finding the original poster, I found a youtube video of the mani! Only…it turns out the picture was deceiving. I had initially loved the white/pale blue contrast of the background when in fact the whole nail was white and it was just how the image was white-balanced.

IMG_0378

Regardless, this design was inspired by followthatway. I decided to go with what I THOUGHT the design was, and use both white and pastel blue as the background (I think you can see why I thought the background was partially blue). I did, however, LOVE how her roses looked, so I tried to copy her instructions precisely to re-create them! I’ve never particularly cared for the way my roses look.

IMG_0376

In the end, I think it was a pretty decent reproduction. I am envious of everyone who uses acrylic, because I just cannot get curves with polish the way they seem to work with acrylic. It also took me halfway through my first hand to figure out the pattern I liked for the flourishes, so the thumb of my left hand is overall my favorite nail in terms of pattern. I rather gave up on my right hand, oops!

Hope you enjoyed! Happy blue day in the 31 day challenge!

Pink and Gold with Flowers

How about something pink and gold? I figure with the flowers it is suitably summer-y too!

IMG_2547

The design was inspired by Nails by Erin but my pink base is an AWFUL polish that takes 3 coats and never dries (I need a better barbie pink) and so I wanted to do more things with those nails. I don’t know if this  counts as over doing it, but I actually liked it!

IMG_9068

Using Erin’s nails as a template got me very excited about gold dots. I love adding dots to things. In this case, added too many gold dots to things…specifically my middle finger. Oops. it would have looked better with more white space 😀

Trellis of Roses

She what I meant by how I have enough flower manis? But they are so pretty!

IMG_5654

Anyway, this mani harkens back to mid-2017 when I briefly had oval nails. That was mostly because the sides of my nails had cracked on 3 fingers, but I kinda hated it! I know a lot of nail artists (and really just people with nails in general) who can pull off and look good with oval nails, but I don’t think I’m one of them!

IMG_5997

The pretty trellis design was inspired by @mvargas_nails. I am glad I went with a pastel blue base, it pops nicely with both the lines and the flowers! I am also quite proud that I freehanded these lines (although tbh you can kinda tell).

That’s it for today! Happy Friday and I hope you enjoyed this week of manis that I’ve been saving in the vault because I really liked them 😀

Iridescent Dots and Roses

Happy Monday! No really, I mean it. Today is a good day because I start on an elective block tomorrow which means I get such things like WEEKENDS and NOT WORKING 30 HOUR CALL SHIFTS. It’s amazing. Anyway, on to nail art! In celebration of my new found freedom, this week I’m going to be posting some recent favorites that I’ve saved up, starting with this sparkly floral piece!

IMG_2130

The base polish here is two thin coats of Holidazed Over You by OPI. This polish is a very very dark blue creme…so dark it is basically black. That said, the polish is almost a one coater! I always need more super opaque blacks (even if this IS blue), and having one in a tiny mini bottle will be useful, even if I’m just going to pretend it’s black. Oh well!

IMG_8153

I then went and covered the polish with holographic iridescent foil from the Born Pretty Store. Most of my foil is single sheets, but this particular pattern is an entire roll! This is great because the design is fairly awesome: an array of dots with a rainbow shifting wave running through! As I tilt my nails the swirl shifts up, down, left, and right. The rainbows are incredible! I got 98% dot transfer which is really impressive. I did add a few of the missing dots using a silver metallic polish, but I think across all 5 nails I only had to add maybe 10 dots total? So win for both the foil and the foil glue!

IMG_8278

In my continuing need to test all things related to using foil on my nails, I went hunting for a way to make foil manis last longer. The last time I used foil, I only covered it with aqua base (water-based base coat intended for some persnickety holographic polishes…and the only water-based anything that I own, unfortunately) and in the shower the whole thing started to crack and flake off! Which means it worked great for about 5 hours and then became kinda really ugly. So, this time I covered with Seche Vite after the aqua base…. and it totally worked! The aqua base seems to protect the finish and shimmer of the foil, while Seche Vite does its job and protects the mani from such hazards as water and daily life.

IMG_8247

I kinda wish I had taken a video (not that I actually know how to get them onto the blog, but still) just so you guys could see the shifty wave pattern. It was fun! But then I decided it wasn’t enough.

IMG_8305

I for some reason really wanted to throw on some roses over the dots! I was initially going to use layered stamping, but all the rose plates that I have contain flowers that were larger than I wanted to go with…so freehand roses it was! It’s been a while since I last freehanded flowers (yet somehow the posts I’ve put together for the next few weeks have a lot of flowers? I don’t know, I guess I lump them together thematically. Anyway), and these came out pretty good for all that I am out of practice!

IMG_8300

That’s all for today! You can pick up the roll of shifty holographic dot foil for 99 cents at the Born Pretty Store. I am super a fan! Then all you need is some freehand roses and voila! Super fun mani, if I do say so myself. Hope you enjoyed!

Golden Roses on Red

This is getting posted today because it was the only thing I had time to edit last night (well, let’s be honest…this morning. It is currently 1am). Anyway, it wasn’t sunny outside at any point while I had these on my nails, so there are no outdoor photos! Made it easier to put together the post.

IMG_7633

For this mani, I ended up swirling my dark red swatch test glitters together and making a random red background. With all the various red glitters and gold glitters, the final design is more sparkly than I would usually go for! There are 4 reds and 3 golds involved! Yikes. I need to make up my mind which colors to use and what to do!

~ Gold holo accent: ILNP – Clockwork
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ Stamps: BM – XL158, BP – L002

IMG_7633

That said, I did get to use my layered stamping plate (all the flowers are a gold stamp then a black stamp) and I love it! It isn’t as though it actually takes less time to double stamp than it does to simply color in a single stamp, but it makes me happy anyway. Hope you enjoyed!

Rose Gold Roses

I feel like a LOT of my recent manis have involved flowers, so picking something for the “flowers” prompt in the 31 Day Challenge was both easy and exasperating. That said, this mani is interesting to me, because I like the concept but I hate the polish that I was trying to model! Oops. Polishes that take more than three coats to be opaque are evil.

IMG_9789

The design was inspired by this pin, which has no watermark at all so I have no idea who’s nails those are! But it is pretty so I wanted to try it.

IMG_6877

I got a pink glittery polish as a gift, and I wanted to test it out. On my pointer and pinky is 4 (!!!) somewhat thick coats of Gold ‘n Roses by Sinful Colors. I don’t know if this polish is meant to be a topper or not, but it is NOT opaque enough to be worth wearing on its own. The polish is primarily lots of pink shimmer/tiny glitter with larder silver shards. The color isn’t bad, but it took soo many coats that when I added top coat the whole darn thing shrunk! My free edges have their own personal angles now, distinct from the shape of the polish on the rest of the nail.

IMG_9791

My thumb has two coats of a matched base color with two coats of Gold n’ Roses overtop, and honestly it looks very similar to the fingers with just Gold n’ Roses…so maybe that is how it should be worn? Seems like a lot of work for a mediocre polish! Also, the polish is rose gold and silver, there is no “gold” in it at all despite the name!

IMG_9830

I half wish that I painted over the shimmery pink sometime while I wore this to make it more interesting, or added holo topcoat. Alternatively, I bet this would have been stunning with ILNP Juliette! I don’t need any more rose gold polishes :-p. Hope you enjoyed!

Roses and Dots

I was torn between using these for black/white day (today) or dots day. I settled, clearly, on today! Because mostly these nails are black and white if you ignore the red. And gold. 😀

IMG_9712

They are inspired by Nails by Cassis. That said, she had smaller roses and her nails were much longer, but mine aren’t half bad! I need more rose stamps, clearly.

IMG_9696

This mani, despite how much I like the end result, was a pain in the butt because the rose stamps wouldn’t pick up! They are from that same darn plate I used for the Day 2 flowers (which I have a replacement of, but which did not arrive soon enough for me to make these). Also the rose I chose did not have leaves…so the leaves and buds are from a totally different plate. It works, but it was painful! I want to try this again (maybe with different colors?) with a plate that STAMPS. Since I have that now. Omg. Also smaller leaves, oops!

What do you think? Are the roses (or leaves) too big?

Roses on Red

Not infrequently, I get my inspiration for my manicure from the name of the polish I decide to wear. This is one of those times!

IMG_8662

I knew I wanted to wear red, so I grabbed an elegant looking shimmery red from my collection, and went with it. The polish just happened to be called Rosebower, so when I was stumped as to what to do with the mani, I just went ahead and added golden roses!

IMG_8659

Of course, random blobs of gold polish do not much resemble roses, so I added black borders, and then some black background pattern (leaves? brambles? who knows!). The end result was a bit elegant and a bit wonky, but I like it!

IMG_6557

I have so many fun glittery polishes that I’ve only worn once or twice…I wish I could make myself stop buying polish and just have fun wearing the ones I already own! Hope you enjoyed.

Vampy Roses

I know flowers (other than maybe poinsettias) are not considered a winter design…but I saw these and they just screamed vampy Christmas flowers to me!

img_3233

The pattern was inspired by nailsandtowelnailsandtowelnailsandtowel, and I just ran with it. Luckily, I had All Sparkly and Gold by OPI just sitting around…I think this might be the first time I’ve used it since I swatched it however many years ago. Sad, but thats what happens when you have too many gold polishes! Also, I had it in my head that it was difficult to remove…and it wasn’t EASY but it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be!

img_4877

I really like how this design came out. Deep red and gold is one of my favorite color combinations 🙂

Dots and Flowered Vines

Flower day in the 31 Day Challenge was easy for me to pick…this has a whole bunch of flowers! It’s also quite old (I painted this back in spring and its almost the end of summer…whoops!). I also think its cute, if a little grandmother-y.

img_3841

The design was inspired by this bit of nail art which is not watermarked so I have no idea who it belongs to! Nor where it came from at all. But it is pretty so I went with it!

img_9668

I don’t know that I would have decided to mix flowers + color change + dots if left to my own devices…this mani is really busy! It works because so many of the colors are in the pale-neutral shades I think.

Blue Mosaic Flowers

Usually, when I paint flowers, I will do a color against a lighter colored background. However, I stumbled across this awesome bit of art at Nail Art N3rd, and had to see if I could recreate it!

IMG_3026

I had to layer on two coats of each of the blues to get them to stand out starkly against the black background, but I think it was worth it! The end result is rather striking, if I do say so myself. I miss blacks and blues :-(. My nails were been pale pink all last week.

IMG_7352

These flowers are like an ad for blue Zoya cremes. Wow. And Zoya just released another blue creme and I want that one too! Its ridiculous. I don’t need this mani blues! But then again, they allow me to create a mani like this…so maybe its worth it!

Hope you enjoyed, and happy Monday…if Monday’s can be happy :-p. I’m going to continue with the Monday-Wenesday-Friday posting this week. This past weekend I was in Rhode Island to attend my boyfriend’s sister’s graduation from her masters program. Fun times!

Rose Trellis

Time for a vaguely spring-themed mani! I know it’s still February  but its been so freakishly warm in Philadelphia that the crocus buds are starting to come out! And I’ve been wearing a sweater rather than a jacket.

IMG_2030

This nail art was inspired by @jeninthemorning, I just decided to run with it! Brown and pink always look great together.

I actually thought I had done this mani before (since I have the exact color and I have had this nail art pinned for months) but it turns out that I didn’t! So here we go.

Flowers Rising

The base for this, Falling for Hue by KBShimmer might just be the most Valentines Day polish ever. I love it. (Which is to say I know they sell polish with hearts in it but I hate large glitters that have weird shapes. Other than diamonds…I like diamond glitter).

IMG_2023

The flower art was inspired by @justagirlandhernails. Her polish was different than mine so I switched up the colors. Unfortunately, I don’t like mine as much! Maybe I should have done dark pink/light pink/white instead of pink/light purple/white, but who knows!

I also need to get a thinner paint brush for detail lines or just get some acrylics. This is annoying to paint!
