Dangling Sky

I just saw this one stamp and knew I needed to use it. I do not regret that decision. This whole design was based around being able to use the stamp that you can see on my ring finger and thumb. With that in mind I REALLY should have chose a photo that shows my full thumb! Oops :-/

I was still (as mentioned on Wednesday) in a purple phase at this point. But honestly its such a cool color! And it pairs well with just about everything! Also, stars and moonsā€¦and just general awesomeness in the sky šŸ™‚ Hope you all enjoyed!

Abstract Sky

Ok, so this isnā€™t QUITE a fail, it just isnā€™t nearly as good as I expected. Of course, I now own the item I wanted to use (gold glitter for stamping) but I didnā€™t have it when I painted these! Oops.

The base color here is two coats of Gaia by KBShimmer from Jan 2019 PPP. This is a deep blue jelly that appears cobalt due to all the glitters: iridescent shards that shift teal to purple and coarse silver holo glitters. Both are plentiful. This polish takes just a bit of spreading due to the flakie load, but it dries down nicely on the nail! I love it.

The design was inspired by de_briz. So, I started with Gaia, then layered on some MORE flakies (just for fun) and then stamped some dots in black. Sadly, my plate with swirly dots does not stamp well! This is doubly sad because the swirly dot design is literally mineā€¦I had done it years ago and when the “make your own” stamping plate series became a thing I submitted it, and it got in. So this pattern was designed by meā€¦and this plate hardly stamped. So, I started in black (which is not visible at all) and then tried to go over it in goldā€¦and it was patchy and awful. So I top coated and tried to convince myself it was good enough. However, if I am anything in the nail art world, I am the woman who adds too many dotsā€¦so I fixed it by going over every dot by hand. With the same gold. I have to say, it looks much better. I also didn’t bother top coating at the end since the gold polish is a quick dry that actually lives up to its name, and I do love vaguely textured nails!

Thatā€™s it for today! Iā€™ll have to try something like this mani without spending an extra hour free handing the dots next time. Live and learn!

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

This is my entry for this years nail art canada holiday challenge! I have entered for the past 5 or so years, and last year I won the internal competition! Most years I just pick my very favorite holiday mani that I had done up to that pointā€¦but this year I painted something specifically for the challenge. I have to say I am quite pleased! The design itself was based off a press-on nail set by Project Nails.

I started with a blue holographic base (mostly because I wanted to use a one-coat base and the halo hues collection from Color Club are basically magic). I then brush-gradiented using blue and purple scattered holo crellies and splotched on some dark teal jelly. Once that was all top coated and dry, it was design time!

I basically freehanded some rooftops, then a moon, then snow, and finally windows and sled. The hardest part of the whole thing was certainly the reindeer, I still don’t love them but without using acrylic I think this is the best I can do! The only part of this mani that isn’t free-handed is the stars: those are stamps. The top of the moon was made from playing with variations of white and yellow to make a little gradient.

Please go vote for this entry in the challenge, it would be amazing to win! You can find the link here and sprinkled throughout the rest of this post. I will keep posting the link for the remainder of the contest. Hope you enjoyed, and thank you for voting!!

Astral Shifts

Ok, so, I love this mani. I love how it looks, I love the colors, and I LOVE the magnet! I got a new magnetic polish from the Born Pretty Store to reviewā€¦and somehow, unlike every other magnetic polish I own, this one works like a charm. Maybe I am just getting better, but the design on my pointer finger stayed looking perfect for three days. Most magnetic polishes just can’t do that!

Anyway, this is two coats of Astral Realm over black. The first coat was thin and the second coat was thick; I magnetized both times (and again when I put top coat on, although the magnetic particles didn’t actually move). Astral Realm is a multichrome magnetic. I was doubtful at first, but its actually true! The shift is a bit more subtle than pure multichromes of the same color range, but it is definitely there. This polish shifts from a bright fuchsia to pink (the primary colors) and then to orange and gold. I even saw hints of green at sharp angles!

I got a whole bunch of compliments on this at work. People were stopping me as I was typing on the computer to ask me how I got my nails to look like this :-D. I also love the stamps! When Whats Up Nails had their stamping sale, this is one of the 6 plates (oops!) that I picked up! I bought it on a whim but it has turned out to possibly be my favorite of the bunch. Stars! Moons! A super fancy sun! Anyway.

It is rare that I only use three colors in a mani, especially when only two of them are visible! But the magnetic polish was cool enough that I thought adding anything else to this would be a waste.

~ Gold: Essie – Good as Gold

That’s all for today! I hope you enjoyed! In case anyone was curiousā€¦my pinky I just magnetized the very edge of my cuticle, for the ring and middle I used one of those strong magnetics to make a line (diagonal vs horizontal), my pointer I used a repeating diagonal line full-nail magnet, and my thumb I pushed around the polish using the rounded head of a strong double-sided magnetic wand. You can pick up Astral Realm at the Born Pretty Store for $5.39, which is a lot for a tiny 6ml bottle, but it does work!

Wispy Clouds by Moonlight

I have had this mani sitting in my to-try list for literally years. My sister-in-law visited and I asked her to pick a nail polish base color and she goes “dark royal blue, or purple” so I decided to do both and remembered that I had wanted to try this!

It just so happened that of course I ended up painting a moon! Now I know today’s challenge is a galaxy mani, and I actually HAVE Ā one of those, but I figured I would shake it up a bit and post this instead. You can’t see the galaxies because of the clouds :-D. Also YESTERDAYS challenge was half moon, which again I hate that type of design so I’ve been doing moon-themed manis for a few years and I just needed to get this out!

The design itself was inspired by @sketchpolish, although I ended up leaving my version shiny (both my husband and sister-in-law said they liked it better than matted)!

~ Dark blurple: Zoya – Danielle
~ Dark blue: Zoya Ā – Sia
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed! This was a lot of fun to paint, and I will forever be grateful that I finally have stamps with perfect circles that I can use for things like moons. I hate free-handing circles!

Silver Starred Sky

There is a lot going on with this mani, and it didn’t quite come out how I wanted! I was swatching a beautiful new polish that I didn’t want to completely cover upā€¦and so the galaxy mani that I triedĀ toĀ make ended up looking meh. Butā€¦silver holographic stars fix everything, right?

Anyway, the base here is yet ANOTHER new polish, this time from ILNP, called Downpour. When I first opened the package, IĀ thinkĀ this was the polish that drew my eye the most! It is such a vibrant deep metallic-finished blue, and has copious holographic shards. I even took a macro photo just to show off how the metallic finish goes over the buried shards. I die. I love this polish. I usedĀ three thin coats for depth, but my nail line was covered in two. IĀ shouldĀ probablyĀ mention, this polish was surprisingly easy to remove as well!

I then added on lots of different shades of blue to make a galaxy design, but decided it looked too varied and more or less covered everything with Yummy, which was a mistake. I wish I had stopped at an earlier part in my design! It looks ok, but certainly not breaking any records.

When that was done, I placed some silver holographic stars that I was sent to review from the Born Pretty Store. They come in a little pot with three sizes (small, medium, and largeā€¦all three are visible on my thumb). They are awesome! I am only sad that I didn’t work with very wet base coat when I initially put the stars down, as they stick up a bit because they are so large (especially the biggest size), but I think that’s my fault! I imagine I will be using these whenever I put together a galaxy mani in the future.

Prior to this, it had been such a long time since I did a galaxy mani! I have to say, doing it with red this past summer was more fun than with bluesā€¦as the sky is blue and so everyone can already imagine what that looks like :-p. Oh well. Downpour is stunning and now I have fancy stars for my sky!

I hope you enjoyed! And if you are interested in picking up some holographic stars for yourself, head over to the Born Pretty Store where you can find them for $1.49.

Half Moon Sky

Day 18 calls for “half moons” only, I really despite most half moon nail art. So, I decided to be sneaky and make half a moon in the sky! In retrospect,Ā galaxy day is tomorrow so you guys get lots of astronomy :-p

The design wasĀ inspired by Chalkboard Nails, although I added some topography to the moon. I kinda wish I hadn’t, but whats done is done! I like how this came out.

Some day I will get acrylic nail paint and be able to make thin tiny lines (like the star novas). I do love that I do everything with nail polish, but it gets difficult!

~ Blue: Zoya – Ibiza
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
~ Grey: Zoya – Dove

That’s it for today! Simple and straightforward, and totally cheating šŸ˜€ Hope you enjoyed!

Clouds and Stars

Another adventure in thermal polish! I was going to do another hills-and-sky thing, but since the thermal I used goes from grey to black (it is supposed to be clear to black; I really should get over my paranoia and add a single coat rather than two over the base color and see if I can get it to show instead of just grey), but the color scheme ended up different so I made a night sky instead!

The clouds are one thermal polish and the background is a different one. I didn’t think the blue of the clouds stood out enough against the grey, so I added a dark purple boarder. Funnily enough, when the nails are in their coldest state, the purple border on the clouds is actually LIGHTER than the clouds themselves! Triple thermals are awesome.

I did try to make a moon peeking out behind the clouds, but it mostly just looks like a messed up star. That said, the stars came out quite nicely!

I don’t have much else to say about this mani. I feel like I had high hopes and was somewhat disappointed. I should have just gone with my second choice and made a rainy day with raindrops and the clouds! Oh well.

Hope you enjoyed!

Sea or Sky

I kept thinking that this mani looked like swirling sea water (with ice on it) or a fancy stoneā€¦and my husband saw celestial bodies and stars. So sea or sky, which do you guys see?

Regardless, I have another new polish to share! This one was sent to me to review from the Born Pretty Store. It’s a thermal polish with copious silver glitter inĀ  it, and is quite pretty! Oddly, when I looked at it online, it looked like a bright blue when warm and a deep purple when coldā€¦.but in person, its more of a blue-teal when warm and a deep blue-jean shade of blue when cold. Not as exciting as blue and purple, but still pretty! I wonder if they changed the formulation?

Regardless, 009 by VCND Bluesky covered very nicely in three thin coats. I used thin coats to get maximal glitter coverage! It dries to a semi-matte, but does dry fairly fast. The best part is the glitter spreadā€¦I didn’t have to go digging for the larger hex glitters at all, and despite the glitter load the polish spread smoothly. The warm color is a bright teal-leaning blue, while the dark color is the shade of blue jeans. There isn’t a huge difference between the two colors, honestlyā€¦but both are pretty and the glitter is really nice!

~ Dark blue: Zoya – Ibiza

I couldn’t decide what to stamp, so I did a quasi water-marble instead. I wanted to do blues with silver (and clear to allow the thermal polish to show through) but the silver I grabbed formed these awesome clumps instead of marblingā€¦so I just went with it! It was much more fun making this messy clumpy marble than it was trying to perfect an elegant and smooth water marble, so win!

If you want to pick up this blue glittery thermal for yourself, you can find it at the Born Pretty StoreBorn Pretty Store for $4.99. I think its important to point out that this is a mini bottle (only 7.5ml). You can also use my 10% off code, LY5X31!

Cityscape by Night

This mani took forever and I LOVE it! The only problem were some trapped air bubbles which I’ll talk about in a bit.

This was inspired by @ponkle. I actually made the black sheer jelly myself. I bought a wet n’ wild top coat but it dries slower than grass grows, so I decided to add a few drops of the wet n’ wild black creme to it and make a sheer jelly polish for lace and things like this! I like it much better this way, although it still takes forever to dry. At least I can safely add a real fast-drying top coat!

That being said, the black sheer jelly I made took three coats to even be a little visibleā€¦and I didn’t wait quite long enough between layers! Thus I ended up trapping a bunch of air bubbles. When I matted the final product, they all jumped out! It took 24 hours for them to really appearā€¦so my initial photos look great but my sunlight photos look odd. I decided to just show one belowā€¦lets pretend that the bubbles are stars in the sky? That works, right?

So, these aren’t quite Halloween-y, but I figured a cityscape by night was at least seasonal! Next week I should have some real Halloween manis (assuming I have time to edit them between wedding planning!). I was going to do a whole how-to-DIY post on making wedding centerpieces out of fancy fake flowers and putting together a chuppah but I ran out of time for that as well. :-/. Anyway, happy Friday!

I’ve been wanting to do lightning nails for years, and kept thinking I had done it beforeā€¦but I haven’t! So, have some lightning :-D. It might not be supernatural but it looks darn magical so I’m just going to go with it.

I will actually sit in the window during a lightning or thunder storm, just to watch the jagged flashes of light. Lightning is awesome. Scary, but awesome. On my nails it is distinctly less scary, but really still awesome!

These particular ones were inspired by Celinas_Ryden, although I added more teal and more purple than she did! These also took longer than I expected, but realistically less time than they could have!

Hope you have a dazzling day! Or something equally pun-y :-p. With this, we have almost reached the end of the 31 Day Challenge. Woah. Also, it is apparently my 4th anniversary of blogging! Which actually kinda insane if I stop to think about it! Happy blogaversary to me I suppose!

I love this mani. Yes, I am biasedā€¦but scenery nails are one of my favorite styles anyway, and I do them so infrequently! Mostly because they take a lot of work (the trees alone here took probably 40 minutes. I bet it would have gone faster if I was using acrylic, but alas, I stick to polish!)

The nail art was inspired by @nailsbycambria, because her’s are AWESOME. My stars are a bit larger (and honesty my nails are longer) but same idea!

I do wish I had a little more light polish at the bottomā€¦it all got covered by the black land silhouette, so you can’t see it! I likely used one too many medium blue polishes (oops)! Live and learn. I still like it.

Hope you enjoyed! Tomorrow we get to see a take I did on the weird new “broken glass” manicure trend.

Distant Clouds

Initially, this was going to have more teal and less blue-and-white, and look more like shells than clouds. But here we are, and I rather like it!

The base is one of my new Zoyas, a pale green called Tiana. My guess is they named it after the outfit of the newish Disney princess, cause it’s the right shade! Anyway, I love it. Pale green with a hint of mint. This is 2-3 coats (only one nail needed 3). It didn’t self-level as well as I would have liked, but it is a pastel so that isn’t surprising.

Once Tiana was dry, I did a mostly-Zoya gradient from white to dark blue, and then stamped over everything with the darkest blue. I was initially going to use white, but I like the way the dark blue looked in my mind, so I ran with it!

Moon, Waxing

I almost posted this for yesterdays Half Moon prompt, but decided not to. Instead, it is going up for Galaxy day! Because plain old galaxy manis are too easy.

I actually started this with a light grey base, then saran-wrapped on white and darker grey before outlining the whole thing in black and covering the rest with a black holographic polish. It worked!

The design was inspired by banicured_ who was in turn apparently inspired by aliciatnails, whose moons are farrrr more impressive than mine!

Sky Dragon

I’m playing fast and loose with the OMD3 prompts! It’s fun. Today’s prompt was “love” so I decided to work with something I love rather than painting hearts. And, I love dragons! (this really shouldn’t surprise anyone). I also have this awesome dragon stamp from the Born Pretty Store to test out, so it was a win-win situation šŸ˜€

The sad part is I had a whole post typed up and it magically deleted itself, so you are left with this somewhat shorter one because I am pressed for time (and sad that my post self-destructed). Anyway, I love dragons, and the Born Pretty Store was kind enough to send me a dragon (and flower) stamp to review!

I started off making stamping decals out of different parts of the dragons body, since it was far too large to fit on one nail. I didn’t plan to end up with the dragons face on my thumb, but it was the only nail big enough for most of it! You can see what the decals looked like before I put them on my nails below.

I made a background of “sky” with a blue creme under Snow Much Fun, avoiding the snowflake glitters. The base looked awesome when I was done, but I didn’t figure on the larger glitters distorting the dragon image when I placed it! or with them somehow darkening the dragon a bit (because the base wasn’t white).

Honestly, I liked the decals better than my nails when I was done! Maybe if my nails were bigger and I could fit more of the dragonā€¦because the dragon was awesome. But my poor nails are tiny šŸ˜¦

Lightening Storm

As soon as I put on this stormy blue, I knew I needed to paint on some rainstorms! It helps that I love cumulonimbus clouds. So here we have the transition from sunny to stormy, on nails!

The base here is (yet another) Textured Earth Tone polish by Mentality called Kaolin. It is a grey-blue with a slight hint of shimmer, and dries down to a nice matte. It is one of the more textured polishes from this collection, but all of the texture is in the form of small granules. Two thin coats shown here.

I added clouds with white and grey, and then some golden lightening and a sun. Whee!

~ Blue: Mentality – Kaolin

You can purchase the misty blue Kaolin here for $6.75! The rest of the collection can be found here. And don’t forget, free US shipping!

Starry Sky

It’s Frosty Outside from the OPI Mariah Carey Holiday collection has been sitting in my untried, just begging to be used. I was thinking of turning it into the giant ball at Times Square, but I did that last year. So, how about using it as stars and the moon? The moon is textured, right?

This manicure was a lot of fun to put together. It’s Frosty Outside went on in two beautiful easy coats. I LOVE the large mirror glitters! This was one on the medium side for textureā€¦I could definitely feel it but it didn’t get caught on anything. Perfect! And its a true silver, not grey.

The accent nails were easyā€¦moon and stars on dark blue (Blue Moon by Wet n’ Wild). The hard part was deciding what to do with the silver nails! I couldn’t just leave them alone!

I ended up with a lacy diagonal french tip. I though it somewhat looked like stars. Also, I just wanted to play with my dotting tool/unbent hair pin (you will be seeing a LOT of dots coming up!). I’m happy with how they came out!

Unfortunately, living near/in a big city, I almost never get to see the stars. I used to stargaze somewhat frequently, and I even own a (now defunct) telescope! Maybe some day I will move someplace with less light pollution. Like the mountains. …or recently, a Bedouin tent in the desert šŸ˜€

Hope you enjoyed!

Day 17: Glitter (Stormclouds)

Today is glitter day, although my mani is only mildly glittery. In my foraray though my sister’s polish collection (to of course try polishes I don’t own) I ran into My Big Break by OPI. I hadn’t yet swatched my newest Zoya, so I decided to pair them! In retrospect, a pale blue would have been better than the purple/red of the OPI, but I’m somewhat happy with out this came out, and it is nice and sparkly!

This is my second experience with a Zoya Pixiedust, and I have to say this one went much better! It turns out letting the polish dry (almost completely) in between thin coats is the key. This is two thin coats of Zoya London, a stormy sky grey with beautiful silver glitter!

My biggest problem with this mani is my base coat. I have been using OPI Nail Envy for a few months, and its helped my nails a huge amount. However, I am now at the end of the bottle and the polish has become thick and stringyā€¦.and BUBBLES. What you see here beneath the purple polish is the bubbling remains of Nail Envy. The purple almost looks textured!

Thus, I think it might be time to bid Nail Envy (at least this bottle) farewell. I should try and get another bottle, unless one of you lovely ladies who reads this blog has a (cheaper) suggestion!

Back to the nail art. Since London (the city) is always overcast, I decided to turn my accent nails into textured clouds! I actually really like the ideaā€¦but it would have made more sense to do it over blue than purple. Hindsight: 20/20.

  • Purple: OPI – My Big Break
  • Grey: Zoya – London

I really love textured polishes! I don’t love the ridiculous removal, but I love the almost-gritty feel. I hope some more pixiedust polishes go on sale soon!

Don’t forget to check out the other girl’s take on a glitter mani!
