Trailing Flowers

YOU GUYS. This polish is amazing. And I quite like the design I ended up with as well! I am drooling over my own photos. This is rare.

The polish here is called Grey Opal by Polished for Days. It is yet another excellent example of why everyone should join the Polish Pickup Pack! Grey Opal covered perfectly in two thin coats, and control of the polish was excellent. Honestly, I have been painting my nails for years and even so I almost always need to clean around my cuticles with acetone after I am done applying my base color. With this polish, I had no need…it went exactly and ONLY where I wanted it to go! I am impressed.

The polish has a grey jelly base with lots of silver shards, coral shifting flakies, and teal shifting flakies. It is very fun to look at, between the orange and the teal and the glitter! It somehow manages to be both fun and elegant. I loved this polish so much I ended up checking out the Polished for Days store and OMG it is amazing. I want most of it (many of the polishes seem to have as much depth to them as this one, which is just incredible) and I officially have a new indie polish crush for jelly/flakie/shard combos!

Anyway, I ended up making floral stamping decals using a coral polish that more or less matched the pink-orange shade of the flakies, and just going with it. I did paint in some green leaves, but they barely ever made it onto the nail (they were all off the edge, oops)! I want to say this is fitting because yesterday was the first day of spring…but it is 32 degrees out and snowing!

Hope you enjoyed! And seriously, if you are as addicted to polish as I am (which if you are reading this, I assume you are) go check out the Polish Pickup Pack. And thank me later 😀

Georgia O’Keeffe

As the title suggests, today’s theme is paintings by the artist Georgia O’Keeffe! I have to say, her name has a lot more “e” in it than I initially thought.

Usually, for the inspired by art day of the 31 Day Challenge I just pick something that I can pretend was art. Occasionally I actually had found a painting online and used that. However, I think this is the first year that I went in with an artist in mind and tried to (loosely) recreate something well-know!

Since I had my awesome replacement floral stamping plate from the Born Pretty Store, and I had a lot of time on my hands, I decided to go with flowers. The artist that I know best who made flowers was O’Keeffe, so I went looking for paintings of hers that I thought I could make using my stamping plate. Voila!

Each nail is a different painting, some of them more faithful to the source than others. My personal favorite ended up being the blue flowers nail, then the orange poppy (which is actually a rose). You can see where my inspiration came from. I did try and make each nail background match the painting background, generally by sponging on a color over a solid base (darker blue over a pastel blue, white over periwinkle), although you really cannot see much of the base color on most nails.

Hope you enjoyed! This was a lot more fun than I expected to make. As usual, if you want to pick this up from the Born Pretty Store (and it does stamp remarkably well, you can see all the different color polishes I used to make these stamps!), you can find it for $2.59

Blue Portal

I was playing around with stamps that I wanted to turn into decals some weeks ago, and decided I really liked how this design looked! I intended to do full-nail designs on my ring and middle fingers, but I ended up cutting out part of the pattern and doing this instead. I like it!

That being said, this design (and color pallet) is a little more…daring…than I usually go for in the hospital. However, I am on the first elective I’ver actually looked forward to, so I hope the neurologists are cool with it!

My only regret is the base color. It is quite pretty (a green-leaning blue with copious pink flecks) but it took five coats. FIVE. And even then you can almost see a nail line. Ugh!

That’s all for today! Stay tuned for more stamping decals, they are fun 😀

Shifting Stained Glass

I feel like every time I want to use a lot of multichrome polishes I always think the end result will be prettier than it is. Don’t get me wrong, I find this mani quite pretty…just not as pretty as it could be if the colors shifted EVEN MORE.

As it stands, I looks like I used 8-10 colors per nail when I only used 5. But it is hard to tell within one nail where each color is because they shift! But I wanted to play with them anyway so here we are. This happens every time I get a new multichrome :-p

I have a separate post coming up that highlights the base polish here, so I’m not going to focus on it. Basically, I love shifty polishes and I didn’t have a golden copper yet.

Its so hard to convince myself not to go buy more shifters! They are so pretty! But they are almost impossible to wear to the hospital (the polish is downright distracting), and since there are now SO MANY COLORS by SO MANY BRANDS I don’t even know which ones look the same or different anymore! No one owns them all (that would be crazy) so I can’t get a side-by-side 😦

~ Green/teal: ILNP – Reminisce
~ Gold/green: Catrice – Genius in the Bottle
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed! Maybe next time I’ll remember to stick to one or two shifty polishes, not a whole boatload 😀

Fall Fail

I was trying to make something like this and I failed. Whoops! I needed it to be impressive enough that I wouldn’t get in trouble wearing it to the hospital and this just doesn’t quite make it.

I should have done entirely golden leaves. I tried to mix in a few shimmery browns and yellow…and instead you can hardly tell the brown from the gold and the yellow is too faint to see! Grr.

So, fall fail. It happens! I have a few more seasonal manis that I want to put together before winter hits, hopefully they come off better! I even made stamping decals for these just so I could get the placement perfect *sigh*.

~ Red: Zoya – India
~ Gold: Essie – Good as Gold
~ Brown holo: Darling Diva – Chocolate Diamond

Live and learn! Sorry :-p. The next few fall/halloween manis are a bit better I promise!

Rose of a Different Color

You guys. I wrote a post for this when I made it. I REMEMBER WRITING IT. And now it is gone! Poof. Disappeared into the sad abyss of my of my senile laptop. It isn’t even that old, and at least it only loses notes (oh god good if I had lost my thesis right before I submitted it I would have DIED).

So, that brings us to this point. I made these stamping decals. I had high hopes to turn them into something I saw on pinterest, but I could actually cover my whole nail (instead of the mani I was trying to emulate, where the blogger only covered the very end). And I had gone through all the effort of painting all the flowers…so I used the whole decal.

These took forever to make. Each flower has 3 holo colors, each nail is different…HEADACHE. But they look incredible so I really can’t feel all that bad! I honestly don’t have THAT many holo colors, but I don’t think I could name all of these even if I tried. Turns out I only have one teal holo though, so fail on my part!

GLITTER. I am tired (and sad that this post disappeared) so in addition to really pretty nail art you guys are stuck with my stream-of-conscience-ness post here. I really want to acquire some jelly polishes so I can make this without having to drag out 25 different holo colors.

Hope you enjoyed! Even if the posting itself is a bit lackluster today :-p Stare at the holo-goodness and be happy!

Budding Blue

I have been wanting to try this design for months, since I saw it on pinterest. My version is not quite as nice as the original, by @justagirlandhernails. That being said, I still like it!

The new polish here is a medium-deep blue creme (yes its a color…its not a medium blue nor it is a dark blue. Shhhhh) called Sia by Zoya. Sia covered almost perfectly in one coat, I added a second just in case. She does however dry a whole shade darker than the bottle color! I was slightly misled…i thought I would be getting a medium blue and Sia is certainly a darker blue. That being said, the color is stunning! I didn’t have any staining when I took Sia off either.

~ Blue: Zoya – Sia
~ Light blue: Zoya – Yummy
~ White: Salon Perfect – Sugar Cube
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ Green: Zoya – Shawn
~ Light green: Glitter Gal – No Worries
~ Stamps: EdM – 03

The crazy part here was how many decals I made. The blue-and-white nails were done by transferring the stamp to the stamper in black, and then covering it with white. When dry, I cut the decal into pieces to put on my nails. The flowers were free-handed onto a stamper and then transferred. Lots of decals!

In other news, does anyone else go through black and white at a truly horrifying pace? I need a new white ALREADY and I think I just started using this one in June! Yikes! This is why I cannot believe some nail bloggers shell out $30 for the “perfect” white…if I go through a bottle ever 4 months, I would rather have a crappy $2 polish than something that costs me an arm and a leg 4 times a year!
