Shifting Purple Swirls

I loved wearing this manicure. Purple, swirls, and gradients? Yes please! It helped that making this was straightforward but it was eye-catching and looked quite complicated!

IMG_5001

Really, this is a gradient stamp on an already existing gradient. I started with a purple gradient (lightest at the cuticle, darkest at the free edge) and then stamped a more subtle gradient (darkest at the cuticle, lightest at the free edge) over it. So many gradients! I honestly don’t know why I haven’t tried this idea again the past few months, it looks so cool 🙂

That’s all for today! Some more fun weird stamping combinations coming on Wednesday, and one of my favorite new polishes on Friday! Also, my posts are finally going to get longer now that the “hard” part of my year is over, the next 4 weeks are pretty darn straight-forward. Hope you enjoyed!

Sakura, Shattered

This was just fun to put together! This time I did two coats of Sakura over a white creme just to save some polish on Sakura. It looks just as good! I don’t know why I decided a gradient shattered stamp over it would be a good idea, but I like the end result. Was this still painful to remove? Yes. Was it worth it? Yep!

Pointy Pink Angles

Another pink over teal mani! But this one is ALL SHINY. I kinda wish I had used a creme base honestly, but somehow the silver is metallic, the pink is metallic, and the teal has pink metallic shimmer. This was really quite shiny!

IMG_5092

I’m pretty sure this is double stamped with the same gradient, which is why some of the lines aren’t exactly these same thickness? Or maybe the stamp just looks like that. I am far too lazy to check!

Love for Purple

In case you can’t tell, the theme this year was “slightly unusual Valentine’s day art”, so I ended up with a lot of “love” and a lot of purple :-p. The fun thing here is the purple-on-purple background stamp (you can see it best on my ring finger) and THEN the purple to white gradient stamping. Basically lots of stamps!

IMG_0139 2

The base color here is Lael by Zoya, a very dark blue-leaning purple cream. As with most Zoya creams, Lael is opaque in two thin coats, and is predictably a dream to work with. I should at some point do a comparison of all my dark purple Zoya cremes (I think I own 3 very similar ones at this point) but this is the darkest in my collection! My other darkest purple Zoya Monica, looks greyed-out in comparison to the intense dark purple of Lael.

IMG_0132

There is one more Valentines manicure in the wings for Monday (which only makes sense since my husband and I are celebrating on Sunday…at the moment I am on a day shift and he is on a nights shift so we hardly see each other!). Hope you enjoyed!

Complicated Lace Drape

You guys, I just had a DAY (but Eva, it’s only 3pm! Yes but I woke up at 5:30, so it’s been a whole day and I am over it). Which means that today’s post will be short and sweet because I mostly want to bang my head into a wall. Repeatedly. And this mani? Not helping.

IMG_2125

The base here is three coats of Delaney by Zoya. In the bottle this has a bit of a duochrome/multichrome finish, but that did not translate to the nail (which was pretty much as expected). This is, I think, the last of my haul from winning the Nail Art Canada holiday challenge…and of all the Zoya polishes I received, this is the one I was least excited about. So it went lest. This polish is basically a muted dull metallic purple, and I already have Zoya Gadia, which is amazing. So yah, this is three thin coats, and it looks fine but I have prettier version of this in my stash already.

IMG_8172

For the design, I ended up doing a purple-to-white lace stamping gradient, getting bored, and adding a metric ton of dots! I think I went overboard :-/ I really need to stop trying to do lace gradients over purple, this is probably the third time I have tried something like this, and to date I have liked none of them!

IMG_8181

And that’s all for today! I know it isn’t great, but I’m working off my backlog. This one and the next post are just not my favorites, but then it should get good again (I tend to edit the photos in waves of things-I-love and things-I-dislike, and we are in a dislike wave, Monday’s post was the end of a love wave). Ok. Too much train of thought. Enjoy!

Blue Damask

Well, today is my first call day in the CCU, so I am about to start at 28 hour shift (oh wow this is going to be exhausting).

IMG_2237

Anyway, this mani is basically the same mani as Fashioned Darkly from March of last year, but done in blue and silver rather than red and gold! I loved that mani and I was wearing a dress to a wedding that I thought would go well…in blue. So, ta-da!

IMG_8366

I don’t love it as much as the original, but I did enjoy wearing it! And somehow the black stamp held up even though I didn’t top coat it. Yay!

Swatch Test: Dark Purple Cremes

I need to get rid of some polish. Desperately. I am moving in a few short weeks (eeeeek!) and my polish racks are simply overflowing. I suppose I could buy more racks, but that seems wrong. I think it is time to part with some of my polish!

IMG_7140

The two sets of colors that I seem to have the most of are nudes and purples. This week, I am starting with the purples. Today, the dark purple cremes. Going into this, I assumed I had two sets of dupes (two medium dark purples and two purple-reds) but as it turns out they are all unique! And now I am yet again conflicted.

IMG_7124

What you see here are two coats of each polish. From thumb to pinky we have:
~ OPI – Malaga Wine
~ Zoya – Veronica
~ Zoya – Margo
~ Forumla X – Ignition
~ Sinful Colors – Fig

IMG_7250

So. Fig has some shimmer to it, but honestly the polish is pretty dried up and gloopy and hard to use…and despite that, it took by far the longest to dry. I think I might be over this polish, which is sad since it was my very first purple! In the bottle, Ignition and Margo look identical, but while Ignition dried true-to-color, Margo dried much darker than the bottle color and so they are quite different! Ignition also leans more blue while Margo leans red. Veronica is the same saturation as Margo, but has a bit more red in it, and Malaga Wine takes that red shade one step further while still being more of a burgundy/purple than a true red. I don’t think I need both Malaga Wine and Veronica, but I can’t make myself part with either! Ugh.

IMG_7240

I decided, of course, to do some nail art over my swatch ombre. I wanted to mostly cover up the differences in color, and as it turns out I failed completely at that! But I love the design I used (and will need to use it again at some point over a consistent colored background). The stamp is from Around the World 2 plate BM – XL158. The gold polish is Go for Gold by Sally Hansen, and the black is, as always, Black on Black by Sinful Colors.

IMG_1880

Not maybe the most exciting post, but it needed to be done! As stated above the rest of this week will be just comparison posts (I figured out quickly that nail art over all different color nails just looks silly, so the nail art corresponding to each post will be shown later). This week is purples (with a little red), next week is blues and teal, and the last week of swatches will be nudes and the rest of the purples. SO MANY PURPLES OMG. Hope this was somewhat informative! If you want a particular polish comparison feel free to ask, if I have it I’ll throw it on!

Subtle Pink Overlay

Of all the designs I did during my residency interviews, this is probably the most subtle. I figured if I was going to wear a pink that was blatantly glittery, then I needed a design which would not stand out!

IMG_3029

I used a pink glittery base that claims to be holographic and almost is, and then stamped over it with a scale pattern using a gradient of light pink to normal pink. I almost wish I had used white and not light pink, this design was almost invisible!

IMG_7944

I think this is also the only time I didn’t just cut both my hands back when one nail broke…which is why I have one hand with nice square nails and one hand that is rounded. I dislike rounded nails!!

IMG_3117

Colors:
~ Pink holo: Milani – Digital
~ Pink: Clinique – Pinkini

IMG_7949

This was work-appropriate mani #2, out of maybe 10? I have two interviews left at this point so probably out of 11 total manis. We shall see. I hope these are giving those of you with jobs that require boring nails some ideas! :-p

Glowing from Within

I seldom say this, but I regret buying this polish! A England went on sale at Color4Nails which meant I just had to buy a bunch of them. I only actually wanted one, but I purchased 3 (because of course). Thus far, I was happy with the two I bought…and this was the third, which I bought almost as an afterthought. I wish I hadn’t!

IMG_7749

It’s not that this isn’t a pretty color, because it is. Its mostly just that I thought this polish would be red with gold flakes, and it is really an orange metallic with gold flakes. I don’t usually wear orange polish, and I already have an orange metallic! Oh well, now I own another I suppose. And it is a pretty polish, it just isn’t something I’m likely to wear often.

IMG_7751

The polish itself is called Gloriana from A England. On the website it is listed as a “chili-pepper red with fine and ultra fine golden sparkle” but I have to disagree. Fundamentally, this is dark orange that leans red, that has a metallic finish and copious golden glass flecks. It covered nicely in two coats, but it is not a red!

IMG_7672

I was having a hard time deciding between stamping with gold or black, but everything I saw with either color online was disappointing (I guess not a lot of people use this for nail art), so I ended up covering it with a red-to-black gradient using Siren by Pure Ice, Visions of Love by OPI, and Black Creme by Wet n’ Wild. The stamp is from Bundle Monster plate XL209.

IMG_6288

In the end the mani is pretty enough,,,I was just expecting a red polish. In retrospect, I should have known from looking at everyone’s swatches! Oh well :-p at least I got a pretty purple and mossy green!

Purple Fade Out

Nail polish websites NEED to stop putting things on sale! A England went on sale for a few days, and Adina makes some of my favorite polishes, so I just and to grab a bunch! I don’t know what I was thinking, I already have >10 untried polishes sitting around. I am a mess!

IMG_6151

When I was looking for which colors I wanted (since I already have 10 or so A England polishes) I ended up buying half the Elizabeth & Mary collection. The two I wanted and this third one, a purple! In retrospect, I should have passed on the orange/red glittery one. That being said, THIS polish is stunning and I am glad it caught my eye!

IMG_7316

This is two thin coats of Crown of Thistles, a pretty red-toned purple holo. The sunlight photos are the most color-accurate, the others make the polish look more blue than it really is. Crown of Thistles is a bright magenta-purple with copious scattered holo shimmer and a pink-purple shimmer that almost makes the polish look like a duochrome. I am impressed! Even better, it is basically a one-coater. If I had just been a little more careful, I would not have needed two coats at all.

IMG_7269

I ended up applying a gradient stamp over the polish, which worked out better than I expected but doesn’t look great in the photos. I mostly needed something to blend in…I am getting tired of having to think in terms of what I can wear in the hospital! Just a few more months I can put whatever I want on my nails again.

IMG_7313

At this point, I also have 9 (!!) Disney-themed manis built up that I’ve been working on over weekends (when I am free to do what I want with my nails). Do you guys want to see them soon, or should I keep going until I can do a whole month of Disney? 😀

Bright Patterns

This was intended to be easter eggs (it went with my explicitely-easter-themed other hand for an easter mani) but i’m posting it separately just because (well, mostly cause they didn’t match that well)!

IMG_5988

More or less, this is what happens when I play with stamps. Ta-da! I don’t even know what I ended up thinking about this, but it was entertaining to put together. I hadn’t done gradient stamping in a while.

IMG_6013

I am also not going to go hunting for the list of stamps that I used, sorry! I don’t know that it matters (but if you REALLY want to know I can find them).

IMG_6750

In other news, I am really glad I bought Regents Place all those months ago…I wasn’t sure I would ever want a periwinkle purple-blue, and I’ve probably used it 5+ times (which is more than I’ve used almost anything that wasn’t black/white/silver/gold). Go figure!

Fashioned Darkly

This is going to be a week of my recent favorite manis (stemming back to around January) to celebrate that I am done with clerkships! For the rest of medical school, I do not have to take any class I don’t want to. I also don’t have to take another multiple choice exam (other than the boards, but oh well) until I graduate. This is amazing. So, pretty nail art!

IMG_4310

Today’s post is probably my favorite overall out of my recent works. The design was inspired by @i_annylook, who I just discovered and has some really awesome nail art! I need to go try all of it 🙂

IMG_4320

I actually really like the concept behind this too…a gradient and then a gradient stamp using one of the same colors from the underlying gradient, but with the stamp interrupted. I don’t have many stamping designs that I think would work well for this, but I’m going to have to go find some!

IMG_5167

Also, matting things just makes them better. I think I’d matte approximately 50% of everything I do…except that the design doesn’t last as long with matte top coat! Especially on surgical things where we are required to wash our hands with really harsh chemicals before doing anything. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed! Stay tuned for more awesome stuff this week 😀

Zig Up Zag Down

I realized that I had three different zig-zag patterns, of all of which were slightly different. I wanted to use them all in one mani! Ergo, pattern mani 🙂

img_4397

Long ago, I decided that grey pairs well with pink, and I have stuck with that decision. This mani looks a bit odd as a result (a slightly darker grey…aka black…would probably have looked better) but so be it! Also, I don’t actually own a true black holo.

img_4401

Regardless, zig zags! So many of them. I think I like the fine ones better than the thick ones, but they all look cool.

Colorless Teal Ideas

I don’t know why, but for some reason Noam Chomsky’s “colorless green ideas sleep furiously” got stuck in my head while I was trying to think of a name for these, so here you go!

IMG_7516

This level of stamping is NOT for the faint of heart. Oy. It didn’t take that long since it was only a single stamp transfer…but to get all the colors exactly where I wanted them (on specific triangles or not) took longer than stamping usually does! And the direction of wiping off the polish became strangely important.

IMG_3111

This was another to match a dress I wore to a wedding months ago, that I just never posted and it fit with Green Day! I wore the dress a lot. Mostly because my normal dress for weddings I wore probably 6 times in the last two years and I was getting tired of teal/coral nails. I think I overdid it!

Zagged

This manicure makes me sad. I have an awesome new super shiny silver holographic polish…and then I added THIS to the top. Fail!!

IMG_3262

Stockpile took two medium coats, I could have added a third for more glitter depth but I don’t think it was necessary. It is a silver holo glitter bomb with lots of silver shards. In direct light it looks like a dense scattered holo, and in indirect light it looks like silver shards on a paler silver background. Either way it is stunning.

IMG_8085

The stamp is also rather fun, its from Lady Queen Beauty. But nothing was cooperating…the sun was (somehow) too bright and the sunlight photos are completely over saturated…and the shady photos were all out of focus! Fail 😦

IMG_3263

I can’t even promise that tomorrow mani looks good…which is to say it looks even worse. But I’ll be back on Friday too with an awesome one!!

Mermaid Gradient

This is basically ANOTHER add for Zoya. Intentionally. I just really love Zoya cremes and so I have a whole bunch of them! I saw the stamp on BC plate 04 from Lady Queen Beauty and just felt like making a mermaid-esque design, so here we are!

IMG_7807

I actually started with a base of Yummy (the blue), rather than white! I know that my dark teal doesn’t gradient well, so I wanted to ensure it only needed to add hue, not intensity. It also made my purple look a lot more blue-toned, which I like! Once Yummy was dry I gradiented on the teal and purple, and then added top coat.

IMG_7821

The fun part here was the stamp…I actually ALSO gradiented the stamp! I used the lighter-toned blue, teal, and purple that I had and put them over their appropriate color. Maybe I could have used white but NOT added top coat after the first darker colored gradient and hoped for some bleed-through, but this was a lot of fun! I was lucky that my middle section on all the nails was roughly the same width…or my purple would be misplaced!IMG_7814

So there we go, double gradients with stamps! And mermaid colors. Just because. Happy Friday!

Gossamer Green

Another missing post *sigh* I should start counting and see just how many I’ve lost. This is so very sad. I’m listening to the semi-finale song from Rent just to make myself even sadder (to be fair, the song is actually upbeat but the musical is so sad…). Regardless, another fun holo+stamping combo today!

IMG_6113

I’m fairly certain I have a three-tone green gradient stamped over a gold holo. I wanted to play a bit more with gradient stamping, and it worked pretty well! Even my re-do stamp (the colors were too pale) worked alright, thanks to the magic of clear stampers.

Hope you enjoyed! And even when things delete themselves, sometimes EVERYTHING IS AAAAAWESOME *headdesk*.

Encased in Diamond

My nails are so tiny! And so sad. I went to New York City this past weekend to hang out with some friends, and in the process slightly broke two nails and completely devastated a third. I cut both of my hands down…but you can still see the devastation on my pointer finger here. It ripped halfway down into my nail bed 😦

IMG_2764

Despite this terrible tear (which I am going to attempt to patch up and grow out, if I can), this mani came out quite cute! I had been looking at this diamond pattern on B. Loves Plates plate 03, but it was a tilted diamond…however, since my nails are so short I was able to apply it vertically!

IMG_6137

The stamp has two colors on it, a lighter blue in the middle and a darker blue on either side. I thought it was rather fun!

Jade Fade

New polish! This is the last of the group that I picked up from the Llarowe sale over a month ago. I have been in the market for a pastel green (not a pastel mint), and my eye caught on No Worries by Glitter Gal, so I had to get it! It was 75 cents.

IMG_7988

No Worries is a beautiful shade of jade green. Which is to say, it is a slightly blue toned green (not exactly what I wanted but much closer than what I had) and is a stunning color. I think it turns just a hint more green with top coat, but that could just be me being strange. It covered in three thin coats and dries fast, but doesn’t self-level, so I needed to be a bit careful with application. Regardless, it is beautiful!

IMG_7974

The bottle says the brands is “G gal” but I’m sure the brand is actually Glitter Gal. It’s a rather weird abbreviation and I’m glad I remembered the full brand name when I bought it! The Llarowe website made it look like a very light shade of pastel green (like a pistachio color) and it really isn’t but I think I like it better this way. It also made me feel less bad about ordering the pastel green from Zoya that I showed you on Monday! Oddly enough, No Worries is actually greener than Tiana, which is closer to mint but the same pastel brightness.

IMG_0285

I knew I wanted to stamp over No Worries with a green gradient, but I couldn’t figure out what exactly. I started with a Born Pretty Store plate, but the design wasn’t dense enough for my tastes. Then I tried the ravenclaw hehe plate from Beauty Queen, but the design I liked had the plate number right in the middle of it, so I couldn’t stamp the pattern in the direction I wanted! I finally settled on an Emily de Molly plate, but I thought the lines would be too tiny for my non-stamping polishes…low and behold, they worked! The initial gradient was two shades of green, but it didn’t pop enough so I started over (again…I re-did every nail but my pinky by the time I was done. This is why it really helps to ADD TOP COAT before you stamp. I didn’t have to re-do the jade color, I could just remove the stamp with 100% acetone gently and try again). Finally…a dense stamps with tiny flowers with a teal-green-black gradient!
