Santa Claus is Coming to Town

This is my entry for this years nail art canada holiday challenge! I have entered for the past 5 or so years, and last year I won the internal competition! Most years I just pick my very favorite holiday mani that I had done up to that point…but this year I painted something specifically for the challenge. I have to say I am quite pleased! The design itself was based off a press-on nail set by Project Nails.

IMG_3697

I started with a blue holographic base (mostly because I wanted to use a one-coat base and the halo hues collection from Color Club are basically magic). I then brush-gradiented using blue and purple scattered holo crellies and splotched on some dark teal jelly. Once that was all top coated and dry, it was design time!

IMG_5306

I basically freehanded some rooftops, then a moon, then snow, and finally windows and sled. The hardest part of the whole thing was certainly the reindeer, I still don’t love them but without using acrylic I think this is the best I can do! The only part of this mani that isn’t free-handed is the stars: those are stamps. The top of the moon was made from playing with variations of white and yellow to make a little gradient.

~ Yellow: OPI – Never a Dulles Moment
~ Light orange: KBShimmer – Orange You Glad I Didn’t Say Banana
~ Stamp: BM – XL213

Please go vote for this entry in the challenge, it would be amazing to win! You can find the link here and sprinkled throughout the rest of this post. I will keep posting the link for the remainder of the contest. Hope you enjoyed, and thank you for voting!!

Purple and Gold Galaxies

This mani tried so hard, but ultimately fell to the age-old adage: do not stamp over glitter with glitter (use a creme or a metallic). I started with a purple/gold multichrome but I was working too fast and my nails bubbled! So obviously I had to make a galaxy…but every time I tried to sponge on a new color I ended up hating it! I ended up just covering all the other sponged work with a dark purple glitter and some gold. Oh well!

IMG_4040

As mentioned above, I also wish I hadn’t stamped with a glitter. Metallics just work much better. I was trying to make everything sparkly but the end result is that it is difficult to see the designs! I’ll need to re-use this stamp again soon, it is super cool.

IMG_4039

~ Purple creme: Zoya – Margo
~ Purple glitter: Zoya – Valerie
~ Chunky gold glitter: OPI – All Sparkly and Gold
~ Gold glitter: Sally Hansen – Go for Gold
~ Stamp: BM – XL213

IMG_4041

Every time I work with Valerie I wish I used it more, but I am always afraid to! Zoya keeps discontinuing their prettiest polish. Zoya: MORE GLITTERS! YOUR GLITTERS ARE GREAT! Anyway…hope you enjoyed! And let the moral be do not stamp with glitter over a glittery base!

Astral Shifts

Ok, so, I love this mani. I love how it looks, I love the colors, and I LOVE the magnet! I got a new magnetic polish from the Born Pretty Store to review…and somehow, unlike every other magnetic polish I own, this one works like a charm. Maybe I am just getting better, but the design on my pointer finger stayed looking perfect for three days. Most magnetic polishes just can’t do that!

IMG_3999

Anyway, this is two coats of Astral Realm over black. The first coat was thin and the second coat was thick; I magnetized both times (and again when I put top coat on, although the magnetic particles didn’t actually move). Astral Realm is a multichrome magnetic. I was doubtful at first, but its actually true! The shift is a bit more subtle than pure multichromes of the same color range, but it is definitely there. This polish shifts from a bright fuchsia to pink (the primary colors) and then to orange and gold. I even saw hints of green at sharp angles!

IMG_1184

I got a whole bunch of compliments on this at work. People were stopping me as I was typing on the computer to ask me how I got my nails to look like this :-D. I also love the stamps! When Whats Up Nails had their stamping sale, this is one of the 6 plates (oops!) that I picked up! I bought it on a whim but it has turned out to possibly be my favorite of the bunch. Stars! Moons! A super fancy sun! Anyway.

IMG_4005

It is rare that I only use three colors in a mani, especially when only two of them are visible! But the magnetic polish was cool enough that I thought adding anything else to this would be a waste.

IMG_1224

That’s all for today! I hope you enjoyed! In case anyone was curious…my pinky I just magnetized the very edge of my cuticle, for the ring and middle I used one of those strong magnetics to make a line (diagonal vs horizontal), my pointer I used a repeating diagonal line full-nail magnet, and my thumb I pushed around the polish using the rounded head of a strong double-sided magnetic wand. You can pick up Astral Realm at the Born Pretty Store for $5.39, which is a lot for a tiny 6ml bottle, but it does work!

Silver Starred Sky

There is a lot going on with this mani, and it didn’t quite come out how I wanted! I was swatching a beautiful new polish that I didn’t want to completely cover up…and so the galaxy mani that I tried to make ended up looking meh. But…silver holographic stars fix everything, right?

IMG_5893

Anyway, the base here is yet ANOTHER new polish, this time from ILNP, called Downpour. When I first opened the package, I think this was the polish that drew my eye the most! It is such a vibrant deep metallic-finished blue, and has copious holographic shards. I even took a macro photo just to show off how the metallic finish goes over the buried shards. I die. I love this polish. I used three thin coats for depth, but my nail line was covered in two. I should probably mention, this polish was surprisingly easy to remove as well!

IMG_5773

I then added on lots of different shades of blue to make a galaxy design, but decided it looked too varied and more or less covered everything with Yummy, which was a mistake. I wish I had stopped at an earlier part in my design! It looks ok, but certainly not breaking any records.

IMG_8633

When that was done, I placed some silver holographic stars that I was sent to review from the Born Pretty Store. They come in a little pot with three sizes (small, medium, and large…all three are visible on my thumb). They are awesome! I am only sad that I didn’t work with very wet base coat when I initially put the stars down, as they stick up a bit because they are so large (especially the biggest size), but I think that’s my fault! I imagine I will be using these whenever I put together a galaxy mani in the future.

~ Blue creme: Zoya – Ling
~ Light blue creme: Zoya – Yummy
~ Pastel blue creme: Zoya – Blu
~ Holo top coat: ORLY – Sparkling Garbage
~ Silver holo: Color Club – Harp On It

IMG_8636

Prior to this, it had been such a long time since I did a galaxy mani! I have to say, doing it with red this past summer was more fun than with blues…as the sky is blue and so everyone can already imagine what that looks like :-p. Oh well. Downpour is stunning and now I have fancy stars for my sky!

IMG_5785

I hope you enjoyed! And if you are interested in picking up some holographic stars for yourself, head over to the Born Pretty Store where you can find them for $1.49.

Starflakes

Stars and snowflakes! I painted this a while ago and was afraid I wouldn’t get around to posting it while it was still cold out. I should not have worried. It is forecast to snow tomorrow and Wednesday, oy vey!

IMG_5668

The base here is yet another holiday polish that I won from Nail Polish Canada, this is Coalmates by OPI. What you see here are three thin coats of polish, which is a dark grey-blue jelly that looks almost black, but is filled with copious silver and blue flecks. The first coat looked grey with large amounts of glitter, but it covered in three coats and the blue came through. Honestly, this is not my favorite polish and I am glad it is a mini.

IMG_5632

I thought it would work nicely as the base for a night sky, so I grabbed another new stamp that I was sent to review from the Born Pretty Store and went to work!

IMG_8624

All the images here are from the same stamping plate, but the plate itself is a bit of a hodgepodge of design elements! However, it does stamp beautiful (even the tiny intricate lines, I am quite impressed).

IMG_8606

My favorite part of this stamp is the encircled sun/moon on my middle finger. It is both intricate and absolutely beautiful. I don’t know why the stars on the other part of the image are mixed with snowflakes, but I’ll take it! This is overall a very fun plate!

IMG_5652

If you want to pick up plate BP-185 for yourself, head over to the Born Pretty Store where it is on sale for $1.59. Hope you enjoyed!

Starlight

It turns out that thermal polishes are only intended to be good for 6 months…so all of my beautiful thermals are becoming less shift-y! Which clearly means I just need to use them more. It also means I wish my favorite brands would stop releasing thermals because I don’t want to buy things that stop working 😦

IMG_8233

This was my trial with my shiftiest thermal, a clear-to-black with scattered holo shards, that used to have a darn impressive color range. The base here is actually a holographic blue-grey, but once I put the thermal top coat over it most of the color just went grey. This top coat used to be almost entirely see-through, and I am sad about this change! However, the shift is still VERY prominent so I am ok with it.

IMG_4099

I think I want to try stamping with this polish at some point? I don’t know if it is quite opaque enough even in cold/black form but I am curious! Now I just need to plan up things to do with the other…6 or so…thermal polishes that I own. Two others are already shift-less 😦 (but luckily for both I liked the cold color better, which is where they stayed).

IMG_8232

Happy Friday! Next week is one of my last required classes for medical school, and our “rank list” goes in for where we want to go for residency. Mine has been in for about two weeks already, but I will certainly be double-checking! And I will be fleeing to Hawaii on my much-delayed honeymoon for two weeks after that, so I will be pre-posting. 😀

Redshift Galaxy

Galaxy day is one of my favorites, because I love making and wearing galaxies! This one was a bit of an oddball though.

IMG_6784

I went searching online for other examples of galaxy nail art based in red, since I was curious about light vs dark colors, and glitter amount. As it turns out, no one does red galaxy manis! I’ve found pink, purple, lots of blues and blacks, pastels…even an orange. But no red! So I decided to go ahead and fix this.

IMG_6021

To create this, I ended up using 9 shades of red (glittery or otherwise) so I am not going to bother listing them. Suffice to say it was a lot and I have maybe too many red polishes.

IMG_6790

I also rather love that redshift is actually a real term. It occurs when the wavelength of light increases, or gets “redder”. When referring to astrophysics, it describes a object getting further from our viewpoint…the cosmological redshift is a result of the expansion of the universe. If that isn’t cool, then I don’t know what is!

IMG_6017

Of course, blueshift occurs when things get closer together, but a blue-based galaxy mani is just a normal galaxy mani so thats boring :-p. Hope you enjoyed! Both the nail art and the impromptu physics lesson 😀

Half Moon Sky

Day 18 calls for “half moons” only, I really despite most half moon nail art. So, I decided to be sneaky and make half a moon in the sky! In retrospect, galaxy day is tomorrow so you guys get lots of astronomy :-p

IMG_0722

The design was inspired by Chalkboard Nails, although I added some topography to the moon. I kinda wish I hadn’t, but whats done is done! I like how this came out.

IMG_7213

Some day I will get acrylic nail paint and be able to make thin tiny lines (like the star novas). I do love that I do everything with nail polish, but it gets difficult!

IMG_7232

That’s it for today! Simple and straightforward, and totally cheating 😀 Hope you enjoyed!

Clouds and Stars

Another adventure in thermal polish! I was going to do another hills-and-sky thing, but since the thermal I used goes from grey to black (it is supposed to be clear to black; I really should get over my paranoia and add a single coat rather than two over the base color and see if I can get it to show instead of just grey), but the color scheme ended up different so I made a night sky instead!

IMG_6078

The clouds are one thermal polish and the background is a different one. I didn’t think the blue of the clouds stood out enough against the grey, so I added a dark purple boarder. Funnily enough, when the nails are in their coldest state, the purple border on the clouds is actually LIGHTER than the clouds themselves! Triple thermals are awesome.

IMG_6060

I did try to make a moon peeking out behind the clouds, but it mostly just looks like a messed up star. That said, the stars came out quite nicely!

IMG_6950

I don’t have much else to say about this mani. I feel like I had high hopes and was somewhat disappointed. I should have just gone with my second choice and made a rainy day with raindrops and the clouds! Oh well.

IMG_6992

Hope you enjoyed!

Cityscape by Night

This mani took forever and I LOVE it! The only problem were some trapped air bubbles which I’ll talk about in a bit.

img_8777

This was inspired by @ponkle. I actually made the black sheer jelly myself. I bought a wet n’ wild top coat but it dries slower than grass grows, so I decided to add a few drops of the wet n’ wild black creme to it and make a sheer jelly polish for lace and things like this! I like it much better this way, although it still takes forever to dry. At least I can safely add a real fast-drying top coat!

img_8781

That being said, the black sheer jelly I made took three coats to even be a little visible…and I didn’t wait quite long enough between layers! Thus I ended up trapping a bunch of air bubbles. When I matted the final product, they all jumped out! It took 24 hours for them to really appear…so my initial photos look great but my sunlight photos look odd. I decided to just show one below…lets pretend that the bubbles are stars in the sky? That works, right?

img_8770

So, these aren’t quite Halloween-y, but I figured a cityscape by night was at least seasonal! Next week I should have some real Halloween manis (assuming I have time to edit them between wedding planning!). I was going to do a whole how-to-DIY post on making wedding centerpieces out of fancy fake flowers and putting together a chuppah but I ran out of time for that as well. :-/. Anyway, happy Friday!

Celestial Spheres

Looking back over nail artists who inspire me, I’ve realized that a number of the women who’s nail art I loved years ago and who eventually persuaded me to try my own hand at nail art have faded out of existence. The two biggest names that make me very sad are WorkPlayPolish and KaylaShevonne, both of whom were extraordinary. Even the ones who are still around post infrequently, like ChalkboardNails. One of the only ladies who predates me and has stuck around posting amazing nail art day after day is Cathy at More Nail Polish. So this mani is inspired by and in homage to her!

img_1712

I actually went through the past 3 or so years worth of her nail art….at least what is on instagram. I personally hate instagram, I like being able to say things about my nail art and post more than one photo…and IG takes all of that away. However, it is good for quick scrolling!

img_4414

While looking, I found a number of things I liked…one of which reminded me that I hadn’t worked with blue recently AND that I had this really cool stamp that I had never actually used! So here we are, with some art inspired by MoreNailPolish.

img_4416

Anyway, this concludes the 31 Day Challenge of 2016. I almost made it! *sigh* who knows what I’ll be up to next year, but hopefully I’ll still be posting! It makes me sad that so many women give up on their blogs, and that they do so without warning. I want to know where all the people I used to follow have gone off to! If I ever do have to stop posting (which I’m sure will happen during intern year of residency), I will at least give warning, I promise!

Purple Galaxies

Another attempt at wedding nail art! Since the colors are purple and cream and the ceremony is in a planetarium, I figured a galaxy mani would be a good idea! Actually, a friend suggested it when I mentioned that I was having trouble thinking of good wedding nail art…I just don’t remember which friend! Whoops.

img_1055

When I was putting these together I was underwhelmed. The colors didn’t seem to go well, they were too close together, there wasn’t enough glitter (I usually use at least 50% holos for galaxy manis, but I only really have 3 purple holos and two of them are very scattered!). However, once I finally cleaned all the spare polish off from my cuticles and added my holo glitter top coat (while forgetting that I have one with holo AND white glitter that I should have used instead of hand-dabbing on stars) I actually rather like it!

img_4208

So, this would be a super non-conventional thing to wear to a wedding. Is it nice enough? Fancy enough? This is my ‘cinderella’ hand (that you guys see 50% of the time anyway) so I could definitely make it match on both hands and not have to worry about free-hand issues.

img_4206

Also I used at least 8 purple polishes. I am not going to list them, so lets hope if I do decide to recreate this that I can find them all! Or just empty the purple shelf in my nail art room and go to town.

img_1080

…In retrospect, I have actually found the nail art I want to wear and it is way cooler than this :-p. That being said, these certainly count as galaxies so I am posting them with galaxy day! I will do a comparison week or something with all the other wedding-attempts I have done (there are 10. The 10th was my favorite by a long shot…I am just sad it took me 10!!!) so you can see them all!

Stars and Stripes Half Moon

Happy 4th of July! Have some patriotic and sparkly nail art. I also have no excuse for why I am posting this so late…I forgot it was a Monday and thus didn’t post when I woke up!

IMG_9509

This design was inspired by chickettes although she used gel polish, which is totally cheating! Which is also to say that I’m sure mine took longer than hers to dry.

IMG_9498

As it turns out, I have the same stamp she used, but it doesn’t work super well. Since I already knew this (I’ve tried using it before), I turned instead to one of the awesome stamps on B Loves Plate plate 03, Mind Blown. I also grabbed some tiny stars off Bundle Monster plate 307, because despite all my myriad stamping plates I have none with stars on them!

IMG_9508

Despite the wonderful fireworks slated for tonight, I need to get to sleep early…I start on my surgery rotation tomorrow. This also means that, tragically, I just cut my nails to little tiny nubbins…and left the poor things bare. No nail polish in the surgical suite! As a reminder from here on out until September, all the posts will be scheduled rather than posted when I wake up in the morning (because I will likely forget at 4am, which is my very saddening wake-up time for surgery). The posts should continue through my return on a Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule, assuming I’ve timed everything right. Happy July, and I’ll see you guys in a few months!

Bursting Stars

I got 5 hours of sleep last night but I NEEDED to change my nails, so I had to do something fast and easy! Ergo, we have a gold-on-black stamped design.

IMG_2360

I know this is simple, but the stamp is awesome so hopefully that makes up for it a little bit! The black is Sinful Colors Black on Black, and the gold is Essie Good as Gold.

IMG_2361

The stamp is from B Loves Plates 03, Mind-blowing. I know that my clear stamper is also a B Loves product, but the stamps on this plate pick up soo perfectly! Look at how lined up those starbursts are… 🙂

IMG_4698

I did double stamp my pointer (I missed a spot) and you can tell, but its a close thing.

IMG_4718

Hope you enjoyed!

The Droids You’re Looking For

Wheeeee Star Wars!! I went ahead and put together two manis (one for each hand) for the premier of the new Star Wars movies. My boyfriend is more-or-less the ultimate fan, so I felt like I had to!

IMG_1821

Today we have the more complicated (aka awesome) manicure: all the droids! I have done C3P0 and R2D2 before (you can find them here and here with tutorials for each), but I hadn’t done BB-8, and I couldn’t find any good BB-8 manis online so I just went with it! I like it.

IMG_1780

The idea to just use space as the background for the remaining two nails came from Nailasaurus, cause she has a whole bunch of Star Wars manis and I liked the composition of this one! Although C3P0 looks a little sad on such tiny nails :-p

IMG_1472

I am not going to bother listing all the polishes I used here. There were a lot. Galaxy manis alone involve a lot. Striping tape was used to create the lip line for C3P0, and the head-to-body delineation for both BB-8 and R2D2. Other than that, everything was free-handed.

IMG_1791

Hope you enjoyed! And go watch Star Wars :-D. The characters are great, even if the story isn’t new.

Golden Starbursts

This mani was incredibly simple but looked awesome! Its only two colors, one stamp, and a few 3D pieces. Surprisingly, it lasted for 5 days before any of the studs fell off.

IMG_1036

Both the stamp and one of the various studs are new! For the half-stamped nails, I used tape to mark off where the stamp should end, and then added the studs and beads with top coat. The end look was really fun and surprisingly easy (just stamps and then studs!)

IMG_0797

The stamping plate (which I have now used almost every design from…I really like this one!) can be found at Lady Queen Beauty for $2.99. The tiny isosceles triangle studs (pointer finger, thumb) are also from Lady Queen Beauty, and are $4.25 for 20 of them. Although I really like them (I’ve been using them on accent nails, you’ll see some during Christmas week!), I don’t know that $4.25 for just 20 of them is fair. I bet they’ll go on sale soon though!

IMG_1016

Don’t forget to use my 15% off code if you buy anything, BPLC15! And please go vote for me 😀 Hope you enjoyed!

Magen David

Today you guys get my only holiday-appropriate mani! Happy Hanukkah! This was more complicated than it needed to be, since I had to pull out all the diamond glitters from the polish and then place them.

IMG_1193

I started with one coat of Midnight Swim on all my nails, since it is both super-saturated and a rather nice color! All the nails but my accent nails then got two coats of Turbulence, which remains my favorite polish ever. Seriously. If you like glitter polishes, buy this!!!

IMG_1205

While Turbulence was drying, I hand-picked some of the diamond glitters out of the polish and wiped them on a paper towel before sticking them onto my nail in a Star of David pattern (that’s what Magen David means- star/shield of David). That was not exciting enough, so I added some other glitters and then outlined the star in silver!

Nightfall

I love this mani. Yes, I am biased…but scenery nails are one of my favorite styles anyway, and I do them so infrequently! Mostly because they take a lot of work (the trees alone here took probably 40 minutes. I bet it would have gone faster if I was using acrylic, but alas, I stick to polish!)

IMG_0138

The nail art was inspired by @nailsbycambria, because her’s are AWESOME. My stars are a bit larger (and honesty my nails are longer) but same idea!

I do wish I had a little more light polish at the bottom…it all got covered by the black land silhouette, so you can’t see it! I likely used one too many medium blue polishes (oops)! Live and learn. I still like it.

IMG_0793

Hope you enjoyed! Tomorrow we get to see a take I did on the weird new “broken glass” manicure trend.

Moon, Waxing

I almost posted this for yesterdays Half Moon prompt, but decided not to. Instead, it is going up for Galaxy day! Because plain old galaxy manis are too easy.

IMG_6866

I actually started this with a light grey base, then saran-wrapped on white and darker grey before outlining the whole thing in black and covering the rest with a black holographic polish. It worked!

IMG_9882

The design was inspired by banicured_ who was in turn apparently inspired by aliciatnails, whose moons are farrrr more impressive than mine!

Stars Above

Another blue mani! Yes, I have a thing for blue polishes (blue/teals take up about 1/3 of my total collection. It would be frightening if I wasn’t 100% ok with it!). Today’s prompt was “star sign” but I find astrology ridiculous, so I went with literal and made stars!

IMG_4330

The star of this mani (since this was insanely simple) is a new polish I picked up from the sale bin at Sephora, a beautiful deep blue glitter jelly called Outburst. I saw this polish (and the rest of the glitter jelly collection) at Sephora months ago, and I really wanted them…but I was not willing to pay $13 a polish. All of them are currently on sale for $5! So I got the red one and this blue one. So far, I am really rather happy!

IMG_4279

Outburst covered nicely in two coats. I added a third just for a bit more glitter density, but my nail line was no longer visible. The polish is bit thick, but better than quite a few glitter bombs I’ve worked with. It spread nicely, once you pushed the glitter around. It is filled with a mix of holo glitters in different sizes, that look blue and green due to the blue jelly of the polish. It is also absolutely stunning. I used a thicker top coat to smoothen this down, but it wasn’t super bumpy even without the top coat! That being said, removal sucked…but it is a glitter polish.

IMG_9092

IMG_4312

Once Outburst was dry, I grabbed some silver star water decals that I got from the Born Pretty Store a lifetime ago and just put them on my nails. Voila, starry sky mani! I initially wanted to do an underwater thing with this polish, but I’ll save that for next time. And there will be a next time because this polish rocks 😀

IMG_9068

Hope you enjoyed! And if there is a Sephora near you and you were curious about their polish, now is a good time to check out the sale bin 😉
