Sunset Skittle

This was just me testing out stamping plate designs for nails to wear to a wedding! You will see what I picked (spoiler: I picked the wrong design) in a while :-p Looking back I honestly enjoy what was on my thumb the most, both because the design is elegant and because I really liked the underlying gradient. I picked something more…floral…and regretted it!

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed! If any of you are looking for some television to watch I strongly recommend the series Firefly! I don’t know why I decided I have the right to give out television recommendations but there you go.

Safari Sunset

Scenery plates make awesome nail art surprisingly easy. All I had to do for this one was gradient, then stamp! The gradient, of course, took longer than anything else, and the result was very fun to wear! Once the gradient was done I actually painted over the whole thing with a yellow jelly polish to brighten the red and oranges, since the base polish was red (rather than white or yellow which are my go-to in a gradient like this).

IMG_5823

The base color is a new-to-me red polish called Sookie by Zoya. This is three thin coats. The polish is very pretty and quite bright (I don’t know that neon red is a thing, but this is close), and covers well. It also, shockingly, removed very easily for a red! Most of my reds turn my cuticles red as the polish comes off, and this one played nicely.

IMG_1109

I am actually really happy with how my yellow stamping polish gradiented, I wasn’t expecting to get much yellow tone over such a bright red!

That’s all for today, hope you enjoyed! My formal neurology residency starts today (as opposed to the medicine intern year I have been doing for the past 12 months) so my time is going to become even MORE limited. I will try to keep posting, but if the blog has some random blank days, I’m sorry! Blame work :-p

Sunset Wheat

I’m back! I never really left…but I did move! The new house is utterly incredible and farrr larger than we need (there are 5 bedrooms, 5!! And 8 fireplaces. Who needs 8 fireplaces?). Anyway, I only finally unpacked the nail polish two days ago, so I have been stuck working with 8 polishes for almost a month! You will see a lot of rainbow cremes coming up. This one is from the vault, I just didn’t get around to editing it before the move! This will be a theme. Regardless, sorry for disappearing on everyone for a month!

IMG_0582

This mani was fun! A gradient, a stamp, and some fireflies! Its a weird sideways take on that famous bit of nail art by Chalkboardnails…although honestly they look very little alike. Of course, I ended up ripping the back of my middle finger open, so you guys also get the beautiful view of a bandaid :-p

Hope you enjoyed! And I will do my darndest to keep this blog updated. I have a whole lot of unshared manicures, but my time is getting tight! Although if anyone knows where to get decent (and cheap) antique furniture in St Louis I would be thrilled!

Top 10 Nail Art of 2018

With the help of my ever-tolerant husband, I have picked out my top 10 posts of this year (well, 11 really). They are, surprisingly, not the most loved on instagram, but IG users have some weird preferences! Without further ado, here we go:

May 21st: Aloha (which uses one of my top 10 polishes of the year, Traverse the Skies by Emily de Molly)
IMG_8800

June 20th: Down the Incline, because multichrome gradients are amazing
IMG_2051

July 30th: Ocean Surf, because this might be the first 3D manicure I made that actually looked awesome. Also, beach!
IMG_2409

August 3rd: Messy Green Blue Gradient…I felt like I needed at least one gradient stamped with some combination of designs from Make Your Mark 02, since I did a whole bunch of them! Among the lot, I think this was my overall favorite.
IMG_2492

September 3rd: Mountain Sunset. This begins the set from the 31 Day Challenge this year, where most of my favorite manis tend to live!
IMG_9113

September 5th: Porcelain Roses, which have the dubious honor of having taken the longest of any nail art done in 2018 (that actually looked good) at ~4 hours. But they are SO DARN PRETTY!
IMG_0378

September 10th: Peek-a-Rainbow, which I think wins the ‘most ridiculously rainbow’ award for the year, and also has the pleasure of being the nails I was actually wearing for my birthday.
IMG_2719

September 14th: Gnarly Blossoms. Probably the second most time consuming manicure, and possibly my overall personal favorite. Yet again features Traverse the Skies because apparently my intricate floral nails must exist on a blurple shimmery background 😀
IMG_6909

September 28th: Cascading Rainbow Dots, which is possibly my most original nail art of the year? Inspired by an awesome teacup. Almost equally rainbow-y to my rainbow nails two up.
IMG_1373

October 1st: Holland, which was a direct copy from someone else’s design but is such a pretty reverse stamp scenery piece that I had to include it!
IMG_4583

Sadly, I didn’t post any designs that I loved after the 31 Day Challenge, although I have a few saved up that I should get around to putting up shortly (if I can get my act together)!

And finally my honorable mention, because this was super easy (its just advanced stamping) but it came out so beautifully…March 21st: Trailing Flowers
IMG_6032

Did I miss any of your particular favorites? I had an initial list of 16 that I wanted to post so there are 5 manis floating on my blog this year that almost made the cut!

Skyline Sunset

Remember how I said on Monday that most of my nail art was mimicking someone or another? Well, todays post is a good example of that!

IMG_9165

This design was inspired by Cathy at More Nail Polish, which I figured was fitting since she is usually the queen of the 31 Day Challenge (although she is participating late this year since she is on an extended vacation at the moment)! Also, I just love cityscape nail art.

IMG_9191

Colors:
~ Pastel blue: Zoya – Blu
~ Bright pink: Zoya – Kelsey
~ Bright purple: Sinful Colors – Dream On
~ Bright blue: Sinful Colors – Endless Blue
~ Black: Sinful Colors- Black on Black
~ Holo: Orly – Sparkling Garbage

IMG_9197

This has also reminded me that I really need to invest in a sparkly holo top coat, sparkling garbage is excellent but it turns everything under it a shade of pale teal! Not ideal when working with pinks. :-p Hope you enjoyed!

Mountain Sunset

Happy 31 Day Challenge! It isn’t quite the same without Cathy (from More Nail Polish) but she is on vacation so we shall have to try without her guidance! Anyway. I am, as I mentioned last week, obviously not participating daily. However, I have lined up my M-W-F posts for the next month with that day’s theme to the best of my ability! Since today is day 3 and thus the ‘yellow’ them and I HATE the color yellow, I went ahead and combined orange and yellow together. Ta-da!

IMG_9113

When putting this mani together I went ahead and grabbed most of my orange polishes. And some yellows. And then I realized that I think I only own two polish colors with ‘?’ in the name. They are apparently both orange and both involve puns/jokes. Go figure!

IMG_9110

The design itself was inspired by @lieve91, and for once I sort of think I did it justice? Regardless I really like how this came out! It isn’t entirely orange or yellow but it fits the theme ENOUGH.

IMG_9122

Colors:
~Pastel yellow: Maybelline – Citrus Collide
~Orange-yellow: KBShimmer – Orange you Glad I Didnt say Bananna?
~Bright red: OPI – All I Want for Christmas (is OPI)
~Dark purple: Zoya – Monica
~Dark blue: Maybelline – Midnight Swim
~Pastel orange: Maybelline – Bleached in Peach
~Pink-orange: Maybelline – Orange you Jealous?
~Dark pink: OPI – Malaga Wine
~Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~Gold glitter: Sephora – I Found a Pot of Gold!

IMG_9112

Hope you enjoyed! On Wednesday I will post to the day 5 prompt of ‘blue’ and it might be my favorite mani of the year. I’ll let you guys decide! :-p

Palm Lake Sunset

This mani came out both quite good and quite terribly! I had a particular design in mind which I realized was NOT going to work after I put down the base color…so I switched it up!

IMG_6416

The one I ended up going with was inspired by Christabell Nails. That being said, you can very clearly see that she was trying to do a sunset reflection over water, and I think you can only tell with mine cause I’m telling you! Yes. That is supposed to be water below the sun.

IMG_8208

I started this with yet another new polish (I really need to impose a no-buy!). Shown here is two thin coats of Playing Koi by Essie. I got this on a whim because I had seen it two or three times and I decided I really did need a very dark orange…and I’m honestly glad! It’s much darker than my current “dark” orange and it is a really cool color. Somewhere between orange and brown, with a lot of red thrown in.

IMG_8256

IMG_6423

I am not going to list all the colors that I used, because I changed what I was doing with this mani halfway through and re-gradiented over an already half-done gradient (how does this still look ok??). That is also why the finish is so darn uneven…It looked much better in person. Whoops!

IMG_8228

I do regret adding the clouds…I just thought the sky looked a little empty. Now it looks a bit diseased? Live and learn.

Milky Sunrise

I really love this color combo! I’ve done something very similar to these nails before, it can be found here. The difference is that this time, I had different sizes of striping tape and that made everything 300% easier!

IMG_0263

I started by painting my nails white, and adding top coat and letting that dry. Once dry, I used liquid latex to protect around my nails, and made a gradient using a make-up sponge. I then removed the latex, cleaned my cuticles a bit, and added top coat.

IMG_0275

When the gradient was dry, I cut a bunch of striping tape from three different sizes and just applied them at random. Maybe I should have let more white on my nails, but I really like the gradient! The white I used to cover the gradient is a stamping white polish that has a pearly sheen. The other way to do this mani would be apply the striping tape over the white base and then add the gradient, you would end up with more white and less color though!

IMG_7907

Colors
~ White: Salon Perfect – Sugar Cube
~ White shimmer: Mentality – White Opaque
~ Yellow: WOW – #301
~ Orange: Zoya – Thandie
~ Pink: WOW – #371
~ Purple: Sinful Colors – Dream On

You can pretty clearly see the three sizes of tape (and wow was it easier to make this when I didn’t have to try and cut scotch tape to size!). My thumb and middle finger are the clearest I think…the middle line on my thumb and bottom thick line on my middle finger were created using the thickest striping tape, while the two surrounding lines on my thumb and the next line up on my middle finger were made with the medium tape. All other lines on those nails were made using standard thin striping tape.

IMG_7936

Love it! I think I’m going to get a lot of use out of differently sized striping tapes :-D. You can pick some up for yourself at the Born Pretty Store for $0.99. Additional 10% off with the code LY5X31. Enjoy!

Frond and Sunset

I feel the need to post a bit of a warning. Unfortunately, I seem to be having a reaction to the solvent in the most recent batch of Mentality polish. This really just means that I’m going to try to review two polishes per post instead of the usual one, since wearing these polishes for multiple weeks (what usually happens when I swatch 12 polishes) would be unwise. So bear with me! If you have really sensitive nails (which I know I do), then I would advise you to wait for the brains behind Mentality to change their base (which is happening shortly, due to this sensitivity issue). Moving on to the nail art…

IMG_8707

I started with two neon mattes here, an orange called Obliterate, and a purple called Nix. Obliterate and Nix both needed three coats to be opaque, but they applied easily and dried fast. They also look ridiculous next to each other like this!

IMG_3267

IMG_3271

Instead of doing a sponge gradient, I just painted on an orange-pink-purple gradient using Extirpate and Terminate (both of which you guys have already seen). I went in with black glossy polish and just free-handed some fronds!

IMG_3305

Colors
~ Orange: Mentality – Obliterate
~ Coral: Mentality – Extirpate
~ Pink: Mentality – Terminate
~ Purple: Mentality – Nix
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black

IMG_3302

IMG_8696

Lots of dots and lines! You can pick up any of these neons at the Mentality Shop for $6.50. However, if you have sensitive nails please wait for the new suspension base so your nails don’t end up hurting!

Sun Risen

Brightly colored gradients! Just something simple today, a very happy gradient mani. I actually did some nail art over this, although you won’t be seeing it for a few weeks. I decided this was pretty enough to get a post all on its own 🙂

IMG_0810

I always feel like gradients with nothing else over them are cheating because they are so simple! However, cleanup takes forever. I really need to look into acquiring some liquid palisade!

IMG_0812

Colors
~ Yellow: WOW – #301
~ Orange: Zoya – Thandie
~ Pink: Essie – The Girls are Out

IMG_0804

Hope you enjoyed! More Mentality polish tomorrow 😀

Sunset Geometrically – 31DC2014

This manicure was all together too much fun, and was inspired by my little sister! If you remember, two weeks ago I made a special Sunday post for her, to honor nails I did for her return to college. I loved the gradient that I used as the background so much that I copied it on myself! I did NOT go ahead and make college references on my own nails though, I just added some stylized black awesomeness, inspired by @kbkopija.

IMG_1435

Despite having done a gradient for quite a few of the 31 day challenge nails so far (there is another one coming on the 13th too) this was the only official “gradient” day. Oops! Anyway, whee colors!

IMG_1400

IMG_5681

Colors
~ Yellow: Love&Beauty – Yellow
~ Orange: Zoya – Thandie
~ Pink: Essie – The Girls Are Out
~ Purple: Sinful Colors – Dream On
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black

IMG_5696

The design was made with quite a few pieces of striping tape (my other love…stay tuned for days 12 and 16) and some little black rhinestones. What I do not understand is why my stash of black and silver rhinestones is so much depleted compared to my other colors. Ugh! Black, really? Apparently I have emo 3D nail love. Go figure!

IMG_1438

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed these freakishly bright gradients! What I have lined up for tomorrow might be one of my favorites in a long while (hint…its’d dotty day!).

Sunset Chevrons

This week’s Golden Oldies theme is “chevrons.” Now, I really like chevron gradients, but I wanted something different (as always. I can’t ever just do the normal prompt!) so I settled on a fishtail (because that looks like a chevron, right?). Now, a while ago I had pinned an absolutely stunning fishtail mani from Nuthing But A Nail Thing, and had decided that whenever I had time to do a braid with 12 colors, I would do it. So, here we go…

IMG_7173

Although my lines are not quite as even as hers, I am ok with this. As my boyfriend pointed out, I don’t have any dark oranges, so this really just looks like a yellow-orange-red-black rather than a true gradient. Darn. I probably should have done a blue or a purple version of this. Oh well. Still cool.

IMG_3823

As I mentioned, there are 12 polishes here. I am not going to list them, but at least 6 of them are over a year old…the most recent acquisitions are 3 months old. If you want to know a specific color, ask!

IMG_7161

IMG_3829

I decided to spice things up a bit (read: I love sparkly things) so I added yellow, red, and black gems to my accent nail.

IMG_7171

Hope you enjoyed these! Maybe next time I’ll use colors that I can turn into an easier gradient…oops! 😀

All Hallows Eve

I kept seeing photos of the new Incoco nail strips for halloween, and decided to do my favorites by hand! Only, I had to make them MORE colorful. So, I present the wonderfully glittery and creepy All Hallows Eve!

IMG_5099

I started by sponging on a base of orange-red-purple (using all super glittery textured polishes) to recreate the creepy sunset gradient of the incoco nails.

IMG_5083

I then stamped a devil (thumb) and two spooky houses onto my nails from Bundle Monster. Unfortunately, the houses didn’t stamp all that well. I then added bats and crosses by hand.

IMG_3021

I really think this came out cool! The colors make it spooky, and the contrast between the misty houses (I’m going to pretend the fact that they are not terribly distinct was intentional) and the dark ground and bats is suitably halloween-y.

IMG_5101

Colors

  • Orange: Julie G – Tangerine Dream
  • Red: Julie G – Hot Cinnamon
  • Purple: Julie G – Sugar Plum Fairy
  • Black: Julie G – Black Sheep
  • Stamps: Bundle Monster – 305, 224

IMG_5092

Hope you enjoyed! And stay tuned for my very best Halloween mani…tomorrow… *bwhahahaha*
