Autumn Canopy

More fall! This was one basically just an excuse to make a whole bunch of dots. And we all know how much I love dots! The design was inspired by Snacks on Rotation although mine are much darker since I don’t have a gradient leaf stamp!

Hope you enjoyed! Happy fall weather, and pumpkin spice everything if you are into that!

Misty Forest

This mani came out better than I had hoped, but I made a crucial error…I forgot to check that my nails were even before I started! If you are ever going to paint a scene across your tips, be sure that one of them isn’t crooked (sorry 4th finger, I’m looking at you).

Regardless, this was quite fun! I wanted to do something spooky, and I realized that I had yet to use an EdM stamping plate that I picked up a while ago! Unfortunately, the plate is not etched really deeply, so although the images pick up fine, they are not incredibly dark (to be fair, I used regular polish for this…my black stamping polish finally ran out).

I ended up double stamping some of the trees, the fox, and little bits of grass, which is how I got the grey-and-black difference. I quite like it! I am also glad I went with another EdM polish for the background. 🙂

A few more fall-themed and Halloween-themed manis coming up! Most make a little more sense than this, but misty and creepy forest is totally a Halloween thing! Hope you enjoyed.

Palm Lake Sunset

This mani came out both quite good and quite terribly! I had a particular design in mind which I realized was NOT going to work after I put down the base color…so I switched it up!

The one I ended up going with was inspired by Christabell Nails. That being said, you can very clearly see that she was trying to do a sunset reflection over water, and I think you can only tell with mine cause I’m telling you! Yes. That is supposed to be water below the sun.

I started this with yet another new polish (I really need to impose a no-buy!). Shown here is two thin coats of Playing Koi by Essie. I got this on a whim because I had seen it two or three times and I decided I really did need a very dark orange…and I’m honestly glad! It’s much darker than my current “dark” orange and it is a really cool color. Somewhere between orange and brown, with a lot of red thrown in.

I am not going to list all the colors that I used, because I changed what I was doing with this mani halfway through and re-gradiented over an already half-done gradient (how does this still look ok??). That is also why the finish is so darn uneven…It looked much better in person. Whoops!

I do regret adding the clouds…I just thought the sky looked a little empty. Now it looks a bit diseased? Live and learn.

Cold Winds

I wanted to do some bare trees in the winter…with a sunset-like color changing background. Ta-da! I just need to remind myself never to paint trees again. It takes too darn long!

The base color is a triple-color thermal polish called Winds of Change by Bow Polish. Winds of Change is a complicated polish: it is a light blue-grey when warm, a magenta when medium-cold, and a dark purple when cold. It has a nice smattering of holo shards in it as well. The polish takes 3 coats to be opaque in its lightest color (the warm blue-grey), and dries matte without top coat. All my images are with top coat. I really like all three of the colors it turns to…although it is warm enough in my apartment that I had to keep dunking my fingers in cold water to show the shift!

I ended up taking a LOT of photos. I’ve tried to include ones that show the full range of colors…either with all three on the nail, or at least the darker two (since the blue is visible in almost every photo). Sometimes my warming-up nails after I dunked them in cold water looked really goofy (they warmed in a radial pattern from the middle of my nail…so the trees looked like they were growing into a vortex).

I do wish I had left more of Winds of Change showing…I certainly will next time! I like the trees, but they ended a bit denser than I planned. Also, in retrospect, I should have posted these before the snow passed, since it is now spring time and these are snowy trees!

Hope you enjoyed! Friday’s mani is much simpler, I promise!

Holly and Branches

This is by far not the end of my winter and christmas manis…this is just the last one I got done ahead of time to be able to post 😀

These were also the nails I submitted to the Nail Art Canada holiday nail art challenge, but I lost the link somehow so I didn’t get them posted until one day before the contest closed. As a result, I didn’t win, but I did somehow make top 5 for the people-who-submitted-to-vote (let’s see how that one goes!), but thanks to all of you who voted anyway!

I put these together using stamping decals for the holly and simple stamps with dots added for the branches nails. Overall quite easy!

Hope you enjoyed, and merry almost-Christmas!

Now this art, I am proud of. I have tried to do Christmas tree ornaments before, and they always failed rather badly. These however, totally worked.

The design (especially the branches!) was inspired by @phenomenail. The base was a mess of nude and slightly shimmer colors because I really don’t own a pale-pinkish-yellow base. I should probably get one! I do like how the base nude color ended up looking though!

The branches were a pain to paint, but completely worth it. I actually wore this when looking for a wedding photographer and the woman we ended up with loved it! Is it sad that one of my criteria for choosing people is “do they notice my nails”? I feel like it is, but if they are unobservant I likely don’t want to work with them I suppose.

Merry Christmas! I’ll be enjoying Chinese food, in the Jews-on-christmas tradition :-D.

Chevrons and Trees

Here starts Christmas week! Well, almost week. I have three intentional manis, one somewhat unintentional mani, and yesterday which had nothing to do with Christmas but was still awesome. So, we get some chevrons and Christmas trees today!

The art was inspired by this pin although I have no idea who the artist is! I went looking and couldn’t find a name, so thank you, unidentified artist, for your art :-p. This is why you should always watermark your pictures!

I made the chevrons using tape, although the declinations between the red metallic and the silver were free-handed. Still works! And took a lot less time. The tree was also freehanded, and came out a lot better on my thumb (which I predictably did second).

Happy start of way-too-festive nail art! Hope you enjoyed 🙂

I love this mani. Yes, I am biased…but scenery nails are one of my favorite styles anyway, and I do them so infrequently! Mostly because they take a lot of work (the trees alone here took probably 40 minutes. I bet it would have gone faster if I was using acrylic, but alas, I stick to polish!)

The nail art was inspired by @nailsbycambria, because her’s are AWESOME. My stars are a bit larger (and honesty my nails are longer) but same idea!

I do wish I had a little more light polish at the bottom…it all got covered by the black land silhouette, so you can’t see it! I likely used one too many medium blue polishes (oops)! Live and learn. I still like it.

Hope you enjoyed! Tomorrow we get to see a take I did on the weird new “broken glass” manicure trend.

Falling Leaves

This bit of art was inspired by lissamel9! I loved her fall-themed nail art and just went with it. Her nails are a bit longer than mine, and I get the feeling she used at least a little acrylic. But I prevailed!

I really love painting trees. I’m not the greatest at it, but its a lot of fun! Trees with awesome color-changing leaves are even better 😀

Happy fall! I should have some of my recent favorite coming up later this week, so stay tuned!

Enjoy 😀

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Happy night-before-Halloween! I’ve been planning all week to show this one today, because it is my favorite :-D! Nightmare Before Christmas nail art 🙂

What I love about this movie is that it (much like Love Actually) is technically a christmas movie, not a halloween move (and similarly not a valentine’s day movie). Don’t get me wrong, I love watching the Nightmare Before Christmas during Halloween (it, along with Hocus Pocus and Rocky Horror Picture Show are my staple movies for Halloween weekend), but it is a christmas movie! Regardless, it has a wonderful art style.

This mani was inspired by @mypolishworld. I have seen quite a few Nightmare Before Christmas manis floating around, but hers was the first to catch my eye, so I went with it! I do wish I could get thinner lines out of my black polish, but it is beginning to get stringy so poor Jack’s teeth look a bit..crooked. I also wished I had thought to paint Zero on one of my nails, he is so cute!

~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black

I hope you get lots of candy, fun costumes, and spooky nail art this weekend! Enjoy!

Chevrons and Trees

Random mixture today! Up first we have some pretty teal and silver holo chevrons with dots. These were done for my friend Jaime as she was preparing to leave lab. Before she joined, almost no one noticed my nails! I’m sad she left, but it was fun to paint her nails! It helps that she likes teal 😀

Second today, we have some hold-overs from the winter holidays. My friend Bri asked for wintery trees. The best part of this was that the whole thing was done on a textured background! It made the snow look ever MORE awesome (in my option) and the trees look properly 3-dimensional.

I really like doing snow-covered trees! The trees themselves are two shades of green plus the white. The hardest part of this mani was adding the golden glow to the tree with red ornaments…that went oblast and it was darn difficult to paint around the tree!

There are more wintery manis coming up, there was a whole holiday section I never posted!

Winter Dotty Trees

The last of the OPI polishes I played with was a simple grey creme, Break A Leg-Warmer!, which must have been from some ballet-themed release. Ahh ballet, how I miss thee! I turned the grey into some monochromatic winterish nail art.

Break A Leg-Warmer is a simple grey creme. It went on smooth and was just quite…well, plain. I have an issue with greys. I know they are useful, but I never buy them! Shown in the leaves of the trees are actually ALL of my grey polishes. In one place.

– Dark grey: WOW – #333
– Grey: OPI – Break A Leg-Warmer!
– Light grey: Maybelline – Bare Escape
– White: Wet n’ Wild – French White Creme
– White/teal glitter: WOW – #317

The concept for this came from a bit of winter art by Kerruticles. I actually like her idea of keeping the surrounding nails plain…adding the teal/white glitter made the mani too busy! Oops.

Hope you enjoy!

Christmas Trees

As a Jew, I spent the first 23 years of my life WISHING I could decorate and light up a tree…and the last two years doing it! Ah, the joys of living with a Christian :-p. Anyway. I decided to use one of my textured green polishes to make textured Christmas trees on my nails! I have been wanting to do this since I first swatched Mistletoe by Julie G.

I love how these came out! Maybe you can’t tell, but there is a rainbow/ombre in the tree ornaments from red to blue (pinky to pointer). My thumb has a wreath with all of the rainbow colors!

The base for this polish is one of the new OPI Mariah Carey holiday collection polishes, called Ski Slope Sweetie. This polish took two coats, dried incredibly fast, and is BEAUTIFUL. I have been in the market for a white shimmer for some time…I think I have found it! Ski Slope Sweetie is a white polish with a beautiful gold shimmer. It is a bit thick, but stays exactly where you put it. I had 0 clean up with this one!

I then added my textured trees, decorations, and my tree toppers! When I heard that I had won the OPI holiday collection (a huge thank you to Carolina from Colores de Carol!!), I couldn’t wait to try this! It is not so much a polish as a bunch of beautiful holographic silver circles suspended in base. Ignore the base. Fish out the circles, apply to nail, BE HAPPY.

  • White shimmer: OPI – Ski Slope Sweetie
  • Green: Julie G – Mistletoe
  • Gold: Maybelline – Bold Gold
  • Brown: Zoya – Louise
  • Holo topper: OPI – I Snow You Love Me
  • Red: OPI – All I Want for Christmas (is OPI)
  • Orange: Zoya – Thandie
  • Yellow: Revlon – Electric
  • Green: Essie – The More The Merrier
  • Blue: Zoya – Rocky
  • Purple: Zoya – Malia

Hope you enjoyed! And enjoyed decorating any trees you may have 🙂

Pine Trees in the Snow

Hi all! For once, I am showing you nails that I am actually wearing. I painted these last night. They are my entry for the first week of the Nail Polish Canada nail art competition!

I started with a base of two coats of OPI Just Spotted the Lizard. It is a beautiful bronze-gold-green-blue duochrome. I am REALLY on a duochrome kick right now! Unfortunately, this polish bubbled a bit for me. But I still like it!

I then went ahead and painted on trees, highlighted them with a lighter green, and added lots of snow.

  • Gold duochrome: OPI – Just Spotted the Lizard
  • Dark green: Sinful Colors – Last Chance
  • Green: Sinful Colors – Exotic Green
  • White: Zoya – Purity

There is something oddly awesome about these nails, probably involving the color shift of the background! It looks like a hazy sunset in the snow, or darkness depending on the light. Love.

If you like them, please go vote for them! You just need to enter your email and select my nails. I really want to win! The contest goes on for 4 weeks (this is the first, with a new prompt every week) so if you would like to enter your nails as well, feel free to join!

Happy polishing! (and yes, the last photo was taken underwater)

Birch Trees

This is another design inspired by the Zoya Victory Spirit Trio. Brown + orange + white (+ black). It was fairly easy, and looks pretty awesome!

Everything is freehanded with a nail art brush. Keep reading for a brief tutorial!

I’m impressed that the orange showed up against the dark brown. I am also impressed (read: proud) that you can’t tell which fingernail has an awful tear that I am just waiting to crack off. At least I got one more mani!

  • Brown: Zoya – Louise
  • White: Zoya – Purity
  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black Sheep
  • Orange: Zoya – Thandie

Hope you enjoyed! I’m loving autumn manicures 🙂

birch trees tutorial

1) After applying your brown polish, add thin white lines with a nail art brush.
2) Add even thinner white lines for branches, coming off the trees at an angle. Keep in mind that birch trees don’t have many branches, so don’t fill your whole nail!
3) Add black detailing to the sides of the trees and along the branches. Use only a tiny amount of black polish on your brush, it is easy to overwhelm, the trees!
4) Add small leaves in orange. I did this with the nail art brush, but you can also use a dotting tool.
Don’t forget to clean and top coat, and voila!

Autumn Trees

Today I present, for your viewing pleasure, another color changing polish. The polish is named ‘Zen Garden’, so I wanted to create something outdoorsy with it! Hence, a tree.

The color change in this polish is not nearly as marked as in the last one I showed you. Zen Garden shifts from a grey-purple to a grey-brown. Both colors are pretty, but I had to pay attention to notice much of a change! However, the formula on this was really nice, two easy even coats.

I was going to paint a different tree on each nail (as I have done before), but I decided to paint one tree stretching across multiple nails, a-la-Kayla Shevonne (Side note: look at her art if you haven’t before, her creations are BEAUTIFUL!) I put little tiny fall leaves on mine as well!

My stroke of genius was the thumb. I can never figure out what to do with my thumb! Then it hit me: tree roots. I’m pretty proud of that.

  • Purple/brown: Ruby Wing – Zen Garden
  • Brown: Maybelline – Downtown Brown
  • Orange: Sinful Colors – Courtney Orange
  • Yellow: Spoiled – Mind Your Own Beeswax
  • Green: Zoya – Holly

Thus begins my (probably sporadic) posting of fall nail designs! Enjoy!
