Tribal Memories

Another swatch post today, with some fun (but simple) stamps!

The base here is my first ever Cadillacquer polish, and I have to say I really like the color! This is three coats of Memory Palace it does not have the densest pigment (hence needing 3 coats) but it went on like a dream and dried at a normal speed. However, the bottle brush was a bit too wide and took some maneuvering to not flood my cuticles.

Memory Palace is a pale blue-grey with golden flakes and subtle holo shimmer. I need to do a comparison between this and Timeless Vow from ILNP, since both are blue-grey with holo (although just from the bottles, Memory Palace is  much paler, almost a white-grey-blue than Timesless Vow, and Timeless Vow has more holo).

I’m not going to lie and say I don’t love this polish for its name…although I thought it was inspired by Sherlock and it turns out the actual inspiration was Hannibal, whoops!

~ Blue grey: Cadillacquer – Memory Palace
~ Gold: Essie – Good as Gold
~ White: Wet n’ Wild – French White Creme
~ Stamp: BM – 605

That’s all for today! Hope you enjoyed 🙂

Dark Tribal

I think green-blue-purple might be my favorite gradient to do. It looks both lovely and mysterious! Unfortunately, the makeup sponge I used to apply this particular gradient was past its prime, and it left me with a bunch of small bumps on my nails. Regardless, I think this came out quite well!

I started this mani with two thin coats of Tilda by Zoya, a very pretty medium-light green! This polish self-levels nicely, but dries about half a shade darker than it looks in the bottle. I am quite happy with this polish. I ended up getting two green cremes from Zoya (Tilda and Jace) and found Tilda to be far superior to Jace (I’ll have to do a comparison after I post the mani with Jace). This polish is even, opaque, and a very nice color.

I went ahead and added the gradient to dark purple, and then a fun geometric stamp to round it out! I think if i had used a lighter blue and purple that this would look more Spring-themed, but honestly I painted it in the winter and I personally just like darker colors.

~ Green: Zoya – Tilda
~ Blue: Zoya – Sia
~ Purple: Zoya – Monica
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ Stamp: EdM – 11

I’ve started switching up how I take my photos just a little, and am taking bottle shots with most of my manis at this point (since many of the photos that I like best from other nail artists show them holding a bottle of polish, or some other wrap-around prop). I still don’t think I’m quite the best at positioning! Oh well.

Hope you enjoyed! Happy Friday!

Gates of Ruby

I am trying for a Thanksgiving-themed week…although I am not doing my thanksgiving mani until Wednesday or Thursday night! Which really means you won’t see it until next week at the earliest (sorry). Enjoy these in the meanwhile!

I have bought surprisingly few new nail polishes this year…it is already November and I think I have maybe 20 new ones from the entire year? Which given how often I want to buy one is actually impressive. This is one of my recent purchases, Ruby by KBShimmer from their overwhelmingly sparkling Birthstone collection.

Ruby was opaque in two easy coats, and incredibly glittery. The saturated reddish-pink jelly means that the silver flecks glow more pink than silver, but it is quite pretty! Unfortunately, this is definitely a pink-leaning red polish, rather than a true red. I like it anyway. Suuuuuper sparkly! Honestly, I like the other one I bought better (Sapphire), but this is quite a pretty color and I don’t have any light red glittery monstrosities in my collection yet! I almost want to buy the green (Emerald) as well, but I hardly wear my green glitters as is, and I own like 5 of them. At least I wear my blues and my reds!

For the design, I started with just a geometric black stamp with the intention to matte the final pattern, but the result didn’t tickle me. So I added the gold and I love it! I still matted the finished design, and I am glad I did. I also bough the Oy Matte top coat from KBShimmer because my matte (a Sally Hansen) just wasn’t getting the job done. Oy Matte is wonderful!

~ Red: KBShimmer – Ruby
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ Gold: Essie – Good as Gold

Thats it for today! Another awesome (and new) polish+design coming up on Wednesday. Enjoy!

Printed and Coral

I am always drawn to the coral polishes whenever I get sent a Mentality collection. This was no different! The art over the polish was inspired by hanick7107.

Meet Extirpate, a beautiful neon matte coral polish. I cannot for the life of me spell this polish correctly (it’s also probably the first Mentality polish where I had to look up the definition of the name! My education fails me). Extirpate took two thickish coats to be opaque, but dried fast.

I just followed hanick7107’s nail art to make this, and it was pretty fun! I don’t usually do things that look like prints, it isn’t my style. But I liked this one! The purple and green are also from the neon matte collection. Even if they are just dots 🙂

~ Coral: Mentality – Extirpate
~ Black: Mentality – Scoundrel
~ White: Salon Perfect – Sugar Cube
~ Purple: Mentality – Nix
~ Green: Mentality – Quash

Hope you enjoyed! You can pick up Extirpate (or any of the other neon mattes) from the Mentality Shop for $6.50. Happy shopping!

Pastel Tribal

This mani is a hodgepodge of things I had been wanting to do for a while. I put off some more intricate nail art to swatch all my Mentality polishes and work with the Born Pretty Store decals I was sent…and Jamberry…I really love reviewing but sometimes I can’t find time to do the crazy manis that involve lots of colors!

This was originally going to just be on a pale or nude background, but I couldn’t decide between orange, pink, or purple…so I just made a gradient! The pink was a bit thinner of a formula than the others, so it didn’t come across quite as well in the gradient.

The design is modeled after Madah Santana. However, I don’t have a thin enough brush to do exactly what she did, so I settled on my own version! I am really glad I picked up a new bottle of black polish, this would have been impossible with my thick chunky older one.

~ White: Salon Perfect – Sugar Cube
~ Orange: Maybelline – Citrus Collide
~ Pink: Wet n’ Wild – Ticked Pink
~ Purple: Sally Hansen – Lacey Lilac
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black

I don’t know if this is quite a tribal mani (it is more swoopy than hard angles) but I couldn’t think of where else it fit! Anyway, I hope you enjoyed! All of next week’s manis are ones that I’ve done on other people over the course of the last 8 months or so…I ran out of my own! Some are awesome, some need work. So stay tuned for some friends and sibling nails!

Tribal Lace

This is not the best example of stamping…but honestly, that is my fault. I wanted to use one of the new very detailed plates from the 2014 bundle monster collection, and so I did! Only, I didn’t clean the plate between each use (I don’t normally) but what that meant is that some of the very fine lines got lost. Moral: the plate works fine, if you clean it!

I set up a pink background and then a pink-to-white gradient stamp. I do with that the gradient blended more smoothly, but I like how this came out overall!

~ Pink glitter: Zoya – Alegra
~ Pink: Sinful Colors – Pink Forever
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
~ Stamp: BM – 603

Simple but pretty! I should be testing out a bunch more stamps (both from Bundle Monster and from the Born Pretty Store) shortly, so stay tuned! 😀

Day 16: Tribal (Muted Tribal)

Out of all the nail art trends I’ve seen this year, the two I dislike the most are tribal and ikat. I don’t know why, I just think they are too busy and don’t ever look clean enough for my tastes. Needless to say, I had no inspiration for this and I don’t particularly like it :-/

I recently won a giveaway by Maiden Aunt, and one of the prizes was this beauty: Black Satin by OPI. This raises my OPI count to two polishes! Whee! This color really is stunning though, its a deep grey metallic polish with hints of shimmer. It is clearly not black. But I really like it!

I stamped over the grey with a brown metallic polish. They were very low contrast so I added dots in blue. Honestly, I think I liked it better before I added the dots! They are so bright that they drown out the brown. Oh well, live and learn!

  • Grey: OPI – Black Satin
  • Brown: Pure Ice – Magic
  • Blue: Zoya – Wednesday
  • Stamp: Bundle Monster – 204

At least this mani is suitably shiny in the sunlight! I though of matting it…but decided the blue would only stand out MORE.

Since my tribal nails are rather disappointing, go check out what the other girls put together for the 31 Day Challenge!
