Pink and Red Tread

This features another of the Zoya polishes that I bought to replace an existing polish; in this case my favorite mid-tone pink is simply empty. I tried to use it on my thumb and couldn’t get enough out of the bottle (although I did end up using a tiny sample size pink that is almost identical for comparison) Unlike my pale pink adventure, this pink polish is not nearly as close in color, nor is it as easy to use!

IMG_0322

On my pinky, middle, and pointer fingers I have 3 thick coats of Zoya Kitridge. As it is touted on the website as a “5” and thus totally opaque, this polish is a lot more jelly-like than it should be! It was also supposed to be a bright “barbie” pink, but I honestly think it is too pale for that. It is a pretty enough color, but not what I was looking for! I also have two thin coats of Bubbly by Revlon on my ring finger, and a weird mix on my thumb (one coat of Pink Forever by Sinful Colors before it finally dried up, and one coat of Pinkini by Clinique which is an almost identical color). Regardless, Kitridge is too pale!

IMG_0270

Then I went wonky. I decided to make a pink-to-red gradient, but I used a bright red rather than a dark red, and Kitridge is not opaque enough to gradient over Bubbly! So my poor ring finger just does not match. I ended up doing a kind of fun stamp up the middle of the gradient, but honestly I should have picked different colors!

Colors:
~ Light pink: Zoya – Kitridge
~ Pink: Clinique – Pinkini
~ Bright pink: Revlon – Bubbly
~ Red: Pure Ice – Siren
~ Dark red: Revlon – Valentine
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
~ Stamp: BM – 206

IMG_5642

So, overall, this manicure was a bit of a disaster. I blame Kitridge…I had a whole thing planned with a darker pink but it was not going to work with a medium-light pink! *sigh* I wish there were more comparisons on the internet, but at this point there are probably millions of shades and finishes of nail polish and that would be far too much to ask!

Hearts and Lace

This is so pink. SO PINK. It is too pink! I used a pink with a bit of glitter and added a pink with MORE glitter and then hearts. So, Valentine’s appropriate but it kinda made me cringe to wear it!

IMG_0009

This was two thin coats of Mae by Zoya. It’s not a bad polish, two coats is great coverage…I just don’t love it. The glitter flakes are subtle and the shimmer has very little depth. It was an easy polish to wear, but if I want a shimmery pink I either want a lot of metallic depth or a glitter madhouse. I ended up gradienting on (mostly with dry-brush since trying to use a makeup sponge just transferred the darn glitters) Alegra by Zoya, which is a true deeper pink glitter polish, and one of my first ever Zoyas. I have to say, comparing Mae to Alegra, Mae just doesn’t measure up!

IMG_5525

Of course I saw a heart stamp and figured my nails were already pink, so why not? And then the matching french tip stamps (I do rather love that this plate has both angled tip patterns and straight across tip patterns). SO MANY HEARTS. This is probably the most girly nail art I’ve worn this year.

Love for Purple

In case you can’t tell, the theme this year was “slightly unusual Valentine’s day art”, so I ended up with a lot of “love” and a lot of purple :-p. The fun thing here is the purple-on-purple background stamp (you can see it best on my ring finger) and THEN the purple to white gradient stamping. Basically lots of stamps!

IMG_0139 2

The base color here is Lael by Zoya, a very dark blue-leaning purple cream. As with most Zoya creams, Lael is opaque in two thin coats, and is predictably a dream to work with. I should at some point do a comparison of all my dark purple Zoya cremes (I think I own 3 very similar ones at this point) but this is the darkest in my collection! My other darkest purple Zoya Monica, looks greyed-out in comparison to the intense dark purple of Lael.

There is one more Valentines manicure in the wings for Monday (which only makes sense since my husband and I are celebrating on Sunday…at the moment I am on a day shift and he is on a nights shift so we hardly see each other!). Hope you enjoyed!

Love Above

This mani is a bit of nail art, some swatching, and a small amount of comparison. When Zoya did their New Years sale, I bought 4 new polishes that I intended to replace some terrible polishes that I own, and to fill a few gaps. This is the first of them!

IMG_0310

What you see here are three thin coats of Jordan. I bought this polish to replaced Tickled Pink by Wet n’ Wild which takes 4 coats and is incredibly thick. I wanted to compare the two, so I put Tickled Pink on my ring finger, and Jordan on all the others. I cannot tell the difference! Which is to say that the swatches of Jordan online are accurate. I was hoping Jordan would be a two-coater, but for a pastel 3 isn’t terrible. This is just a nice pastel pink creme. No frills.

IMG_0259

Colors:
~ Pastel pink: Zoya – Jordan
~ Pastel pink: Wet n’ Wild – Tickled pink (ring finger only)
~ Pink: Zoya – Ciara
~ Dark pink: OPI – Vision of Love
~ Dark pink holo: A England – Let Me In
~ Stamp: B Loves Plates (from the tiny heart next to the plate name)

IMG_5630

I then added a gradient, and stamped a tiny pink heart near my cuticle. Super easy, but quite pretty! I do wish I had started the gradient a biiit close to my free edge, but it still looks nice! It was a really quite fitting manicure to wear right before Valentine’s day…so I hope you guys all have a great (and chocolate-filled) tomorrow!

Holo and Hearts

How about a not-quite-traditional valentine’s day mani, for all that I think I’ve used this particular stamp at least once a year, and typically ON valentines day!

IMG_0161

The base color here is Zoya Payton, a purple scattered holo. The base is a bit more pink-leaning, and hilariously (or not) enough it is an almost perfect dupe for TWO other polishes in my collection. I love jewel tone purples, its a problem! That said, Payton covered very well in two thicker coats and my others take three coats. However, if you happen to on LA Girl Purple Effect…you don’t need Payton. Oops!

IMG_0123

I decided that Payton alone was not enough, so I dry marbled on a bit of LA Girl Purple Effect (which is why I know they are basically perfect dupes) and Milani Hi-Res. It was still a bit subtle…so I decided to stamp with a silver holo instead of just a silver like I had planned!

Colors:
~ Purple holo: Zoya – Payton
~ Light purple holo: Milani – Hi-Res
~ Other purple holo: LA Girl – Purple Effect
~ Silver holo: Color Club – Harp on It
~ Stamp: BC – 04

IMG_0186

The end effect was dizzying, and you can barely see the pattern of the stamp over all the purple holo! It was still fun to wear, but I need to remember to use a creme to stamp over glitters, not another glitter! Stay tuned for more quasi-valentine’s day manis this week 🙂

Hearts Galore

Happy Valentine’s Day! And happy birthday to my baby sister. She gets extra chocolate :-p

IMG_5482

This is the mani out of the 5 that I chose to post today in particular because it both has the MOST hearts, and is primarily pink so I figured it fit the theme best! But seriously, SOOO many hearts. Wow.

IMG_8584

The base here is yet another new polish from the holiday sets that I won from Nail Polish Canada, and yet another Zoya! This is Kelsey, a bright pink with blue undertones. This polish manages to be a dark-toned neon, which is pretty darn cool. My camera freaked out. The polish also covers well in two thin coats…and I probably could have gotten away with one thick coat instead…Zoya has been killing it with the consistency of the cremes in this collection! I don’t even like pinks and this is an awesome color. And finish. And everything.

IMG_5400

This is also another stamp that I’ve had for a while and just…never used. I chose to stamp with a pale grey rather than a white polish, and I regret that a little…I had to double stamp the flower design because the grey didn’t stand out as much as I wanted! Although I do think coloring in the flowers with a bright pink chunky glitter was awesome 🙂

Colors:
~ Pink: Zoya – Kelsey
~ Grey: Maybelline – Bare Escape
~ Green: Zoya – Tilda

IMG_5492

That’s all for today! I hope you get a lot of chocolate, maybe some flowers, and suitable affection from everyone (partners, pets, kids…all that jazz)!

Russet Hearts of Lace

This mani ended up being a lot of fun! There are no stereotypical Valentine’s colors, but there are hearts and it is somewhat elegant. Subverting tropes!

IMG_5306

I wanted to see what a lace patterned stamp would look like over a magnetic polish, and I figured my copper/burgundy magnetic was perfect for Valentine’s Day! It also helped that I was sent the ideal stamping plate to review from the Born Pretty Store (I love lace stamps, and this plate is chock full of them), AND  was sent two new magnets to play with!

IMG_8509

For years, I have only had one, somewhat weak, wavy-patterned magnet to work with. Now, I have three! The one I am showing here is a simple diagonal line design, but it is very strong and the lines come through beautifully. I am so happy. This magnet is from the Born Pretty Store as well, and is listed as “N02”, on sale for $1.49. I should probably mention that it comes with a sticker over it with the pattern printed on it…that sticker is what holds the magnet to it’s positioning stick (so don’t remove it like I did or the magnet falls right out). Clearly, the magnet is strong enough to work through the sticker!

IMG_5217

As mentioned above, I also love this stamp. The plate has a whole bunch of lace designs, and this one is entirely hearts! There are three large hearts (which mostly face in different directions from each other) so I used each of them on a nail, ergo all my nails are slightly different! I like it. I am also officially a fan of stamping lace over magnetic designs! The stamp is on sale right now for $2.99 over at the Born Pretty Store.

IMG_8519

That’s all for today! My last heart-themed post will go up on Wednesday, and then we can move onto things like flowers and geometric patterns. :-p I also realized that due to my ridiculous backlog of posts, the actual post where this is a new polish hasn’t gone up yet! Whoops. At some point you’ll see this same base with a wavy design but suffice to say I wanted some multicolored magnet polishes and bought two Masuras….and they are (as expected) amazing. Sorry!

Festooned Hearts

Another new polish and another Valentine’s themed mani! I actually struggled with this one, because it turns out that despite red being a key color for Valentine’s Day art, most of the things I ran into used it as a accent color not the base color! Regardless, I am happy with how this came out (even if the stamp was shallowly etched and so I had to double stamp each nail…yikes)!

IMG_5317

I still have nightmares from the last time I used the gold glitter polish that I gradiented onto my tips, so I am not looking forward to removing this mani! But glitter makes everything better, so I don’t regret using it (….yet).

IMG_8521

The base here is yet another of the new polishes that I received from Nail Polish Canada, this time from Essie. The polish is called Ring in the Bling…which is a bit of an odd name for a non-blingy polish. It covered well in two thin coats (I do love how pigmented most Essie polishes are!) and is a blue-leaning red metallic. It has a little bit of an inner glow finish that somehow leans orange. I don’t know how blue and orange combine to get a red polish, but here we are! I like it, but I have many similar colors and I personally tend to prefer deeper more jewel-toned metallic polishes.

IMG_5255

Random strangers seemed to really like this particular design, I think because the glitter caught their eye! Nothing like blingly gold on red to get people staring at your fingertips :-p

IMG_8527

That’s all for today! Happy Friday! I’ll have two more Valentine’s Day posts next week (Monday and Wednesday) before getting back to normal nail art. I am mostly just doing these posts because I can finally use the heart stamps that I otherwise find tacky the rest of the year! Hope you enjoyed!

Nerds in Love

The second of my Valentine’s Day manis (there will be 5 in total) features something near and dear to my heart: nerd culture. Mostly because I am a nerd. As is my husband (who is as I type this watching youtube videos of people playing various Zelda games…which he has already beaten. Repeatedly).

IMG_8503

I wanted to combine two stamps from two different Bundle Monster plates, the nerd culture words (which feature such phrases as ‘trekkie,’ ‘jedi,’ ‘sherlockian,’ ‘whovian,’ ‘potter head,’ ‘sith,’ and my personal favorite ‘browncoats’). The other plate just has 8-bit hearts, much like you might get as lives in older video games.

IMG_5176

The base polish here is another of the new polishes that I won from Nail Polish Canada, Blake from the new Zoya collection. I have to say, I don’t know that I would have picked out this polish for myself (it is a dark blue and I already own 6 or so dark blues) but I love it. It is a very deep midnight blue, almost black, which is opaque in two very thin coats. It also has a fine golden shimmer running through it, which makes it even more awesome.

IMG_5107

Oddly, in the 21 polishes that I received from the nail art contest, 4 are dark blue! Additionally, 7 are purple. I always figured winter/holiday collections would go heavy on the red and green, but I only received two reds and no greens. Go figure!

IMG_5195

Colors:
~ Blue: Zoya – Blake
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
~ Red: City Color – Masquerade
~ Stamps: BM – 601, 602

IMG_8485

Overall, I am pretty darn happy with how this came out! My poor white polish is beginning to truly dry out (and I cannot find it anywhere, my local Rite Aid stopped carrying the full line of Sinful Colors polishes!) so picking up some of the finer lines was…challenging. Regardless, I hope you enjoyed this ode to nerd culture!

Winged Love

In my head, the name of this mani is all Shakespeare-ified (Wing’ed Love) but I figured adding an apostrophe would confuse everyone…and I left it in normal English. Anyway, today starts my Valentine’s manis and I wanted to do something with birds!

IMG_8478

Basically, I found this small stamp I had never used (despite owning the plate for years) and wanted to create a mani around it. That is the two doves image on my middle finger. I ended up using birds from 3 different stamping plates and leaves from a fourth. So. Many. Stamps!

IMG_5125

This mani also uses the first of the polishes that I won from the Nail Polish Canada holiday nail art challenge! I ended up with 21 new polish (omg) about 2/3 of which I adore and 1/3 of which I would never have picked. This is one of the ones I would not have gone for. This is Once in a Blue Moon by ORLY, and is actually a nice pale blue-grey color, and is a two-coater which is great. However…it is also a frost. Can the nail polish community at large just agree to stop making frosty polishes? There are brush strokes all over the place and I would much rather see this as a shimmer or metallic, or even a creme. Also, I hate the ORLY brushes, they are far too wide for my poor pinky nail! All-in-all, I don’t know that I am going to try very hard to keep this particular color…it might end up going to my sister.

IMG_5086

Colors:
~ Blue: ORLY – Once in a Blue Moon
~ Green: Zoya – Shawn
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ Pink: Revlon – Bubbly
~ Stamps: BM – XL472, BC – 06, BP – L067, EdM – 07

IMG_5122

Now I sort of wish I had tried to double stamp the birds in white, but it looks alright as it is! I am also glad that the border images from BM – XL472 seem to fit my nails :-).

IMG_8500

That’s all for today, hope you enjoyed and get ready for more love-themed manis!

Stormy Heart

This is it, the final boring mani that I wore to interviews! Although if I am being honest, this one is not all that boring. It is also February  which means I am permitted to start posting hearts (not that I have any other pink manis prepared…I spent the last few weeks wearing subtle pink and so I have been avoiding the color altogether. Can I make a blue Valentine’s mani???). Anyway, have some shimmer and some hearts!

IMG_4980

I knew what I wanted to do with this mani, and trialled three different grey/grey combos before settling on this one. I am a little sad because the hearts take up so much space you can barely see the base! This only matters because the base is Crystal Crown, which I have just now realized was discontinued at some point in the past. This is awful because it is easily my most-used grey, and the bottle is half empty! Ooops. I need to keep a better eye on when indie polishes discontinue my favorites!

IMG_8419

But anyway, this was basically advanced stamping with grey and white over grey. It looks rather nice for all that, and was suitably almost-subtle and heart-shaped!

IMG_8422

Happy Friday! And this ends the run of boring manis. Now all I need to do is actually pick where I want to be next year (and for the next 10 or so years, yikes!) and get started on some actual Valentine’s manis!

Red-y Floral

This is the mani that matches the one from last Friday! As you can see, they look remarkably similar. That is actually unintentional…I used a white-to-red gradient (over a light pink base) for this mani, and was hoping for red tips. I ended up with pink tips because my red creme is pink-based. Whoops!

img_5301

Despite the color similarity, I also really like how this mani came out! I went with a darker stamping color, so the design pops all the way down my nail (not just at the lighter end). I also decided to mix up where the gradient was originating, which ended up looking pretty nifty!

img_5380

You can also tell here just how well this plate is etched. The color that I used to stamp (Visions of Love by OPI) is not a stamping polish. It is pigmented, but has almost a jelly-like quality to it when used as a base polish. Despite that, it stamped darkly and beautifully, with all the thinner lines picking up perfectly. Score one for the Born Pretty Store!

Anyway, happy post-Valentines-Day! Hopefully I can lay off the red and pink manis after this. Enjoy!

Valentines Dotticure

I wasn’t sure if I was going to use this as my day-before-Valentine’s Day mani or not…because there are no hearts! But really, I didn’t paint any hearts this year, so have some pink and red and gold dots 😀

img_5257

This mani was inspired by @badgirlnails…which really just seems to be a trend for me right now. I think I accidentally browsed her last approximately three years worth of manis and pinned them all to my to-try folder on pinterest. And they are all somewhat simple (like, 1-1.5 hours of work, rather than 3 hours of work) so when I don’t want to stamp I just keep turing to them! I would say whoops, but I honestly like her nail art a bunch so I don’t feel too bad about continually turned to it for inspiration.

img_5193

Sadly, I haven’t actually edited the mani that includes the swatch of the base color I’ve used here, Cherish by Picture Polish. I’ll see if I can’t get posted next week or something! The nail art that went with it is a bit boring, but it is a pretty polish. So, stay tuned for that!

img_5253

Regardless, happy almost Valentine’s Day! I hope you eat a lot of chocolates and your lives are filled with flowers. Personally, I love going to the grocery store the day AFTER Valentine’s and grabbing all the half-price chocolate :-D. There is one more pink mani coming on Wednesday (just because), and then on to less girly pastures!

img_5247

I am a little curious myself…this is my first Valentine’s day since I got married. I don’t think my husband and I are doing anything we don’t usually do (small gifts, fancy dinner, and not-flowers), but will it feel different? I highly doubt it :-p. Hope you enjoyed the nail art!

Fade to Pink Floral

There are basically two versions of this mani…which I wore on opposing hands. I’ll be posting one today (clearly) and the other next week. They are, in fact, different manis…it just turns out when you try to gradient with white and red, it looks like a lot like using different shades of pink!

img_5368

This is a triple-pink gradient, with a pink holo stamped on top. I honestly thought that Ciara (the darkest pink in the gradient) would not end up being so dark, so the pattern would show more at the tips. Clearly, I was wrong! It still looks cool. I was aiming for a Valentine’s Day color palette…so yah.

img_5357

The design is from a stamping plate that I was sent to review from the Born Pretty Store…and I have to say I love it. Some of their plates can be hit-or-miss, either in terms of design or etching. This one is perfectly etched, and the designs are all really pretty! everything on this plate is vaguely stylized floral patterns, but they are all large enough that you can fit them in different orientations (see, for example, my pointer vs. middle fingers…same stamp just rotated and it still covers my whole nail). I have to say I’m impressed!

Angled Echos

Every year, around Valentine’s Day, I reach for The Unloved by Emily de Molly. I don’t quite know why, but its become ingrained! I also DO NOT understand the name of this polish, given how striking it is. But I digress.

img_5393

This year, I felt like starting of the pink/red/HEARTS manicures that tend to spew out around Valentines Day with something sharp and geometric. So, ta-da! I double stamped over The Unloved with the same stamp twice…first in black and then in gold. The idea was to make it looks like an echo or shadow of the original design. I like it!

img_5423

I also wanted to use another new stamping plate I was sent from the Born Pretty Store. This plate is the best. I love love LOVE geometric designs, but freehanding them never works out well (too many straight lines) and using striping tape takes literally hours. The best solution seems to be plates, and this one is chalk-full of awesome geometric designs! I ended up using different ones on each nail (well, same pattern on my ring finger and thumb because I made this decision after I already did those two). I love them all.

In warning: the next few posts are going be either heart-themed or red/pink themed. They are still pretty (in terms of the art) but it might be overwhelming (especially since I usually post rather varied colors in a given week). Anyway.

img_5428

If you want to pick up this awesome geometric stamping plate (and I do recommend it, the designs are really awesome and well-etched), head over to the Born Pretty Store where you can get it for $2.59. Don’t forget my 10% off code, LY5X31! Enjoy!

Hearts Galore

Happy almost Valentines Day! I actually have some random pink or red manis left over that I just haven’t posted yet. but I’ll hold off using them next week so you can get the influx of hears and mush out of your systems :-p

IMG_1967

This mani was inspired by @KAFig. I loved the gradient/lines/hearts idea!

IMG_3183

My accent nails were made by stamping over a gradient and then coloring around the stamp. Maybe I should have done it as a decal, but I didn’t think about that till after! Oops. They still look pretty good.

Heart of Gold

Shiny! Metallic! Awesome! I got more compliments on this mani than most of my other recent ones. Go figure!

IMG_1972

Yes, the title of the post is from a brothel in Firefly. I love that show…although this mani has nothing to do with it.

IMG_3154

The art was inspired by a pinterest pin with the name “NailsByJennifer” but I can’t find a blog or anything! So, here is the pin but sorry I can’t give the actual link-back! I jazzed it up a little and used a holo gold polish.

IMG_1976

To make the hearts, I actually painted them onto a stamper and then colored them in. I can’t paint free-hand hearts (especially with my non-dominant hand) so this was just easier.

Flowers Rising

The base for this, Falling for Hue by KBShimmer might just be the most Valentines Day polish ever. I love it. (Which is to say I know they sell polish with hearts in it but I hate large glitters that have weird shapes. Other than diamonds…I like diamond glitter).

IMG_2023

The flower art was inspired by @justagirlandhernails. Her polish was different than mine so I switched up the colors. Unfortunately, I don’t like mine as much! Maybe I should have done dark pink/light pink/white instead of pink/light purple/white, but who knows!

IMG_2021

I also need to get a thinner paint brush for detail lines or just get some acrylics. This is annoying to paint!

Love Letter

Another nude mani! Unfortunately, I snapped the corner off my pinky the day I painted this, so I needed to put together something where my pinky would not stand out for being oddly shaped (apologizes in advance, the next few manis are probably also gonna have my oddly shaped pinky because I refuse to completely cut off my other nails). With that in mind, I put together a manicure that let me use the love words stamp from Bundle Monster, as well as a nude gold glitter and envelopes!

IMG_7157

I have seen tons of envelope manis, and I wanted to try my hand at one. This might have gone a tiny bit better if I painted it with my dominant hand, but overall I like it! The only mistake? I made the envelopes upside-down for imaging! So most of the photos here have been manipulated (aka turned in one direction or another).

Lace Stockings

This one isn’t quite Valentines themed, but I figured floral lace is good enough! This mani is actually a disappointment…not because of the design, but because of the base color. Zoya recently had a promotion where they gave away three free mini colors in addition to whatever you bought, and this is one of them. And it is UGLY.

IMG_7673

The mini trio consisted of a deep “dirt” brown/black, a pale gold metallic, and the color shown here, a nude creme. I was most excited for this one, because I am always in the market for new nudes. I was NOT in the market for a greenish-yellow nude that made my nails looked diseased. Seriously, I have seen people with chronic illnesses in the hospitals with nails that looked healthier than this color. I bet it would look good on people with darker skin tones, but it looks awful on me! Anyway, the polish is named Charlotte, and covered nicely in two coats. If only it weren’t a terrible color.

IMG_7192

I decided to try and separate the color away from my skin tone, so I stamped with black and added some red highlights. It actually worked…my nails no longer look sickly! I am particularly happy with the tiny red french tips.
