Holographic Grey Splashes

Wintry and appropriate! Next week I start posting lace-themed things for Valentine’s day (no hearts this year) so I figured I should sneak in at least one final winter manicure.

IMG_8208

What is cool about this mani is that I actually both polished with a holo AND stamped with a similar scattered holo. Usually I would stamp with a creme polish but I wanted to see what would happen! The end result it kinda trippy, it almost looks like I top coated with some type of linear-ish holographic? Go figure!

Of course my friend had a birthday, and she has (and loves) guinea pigs, so I had to add them on just for her! The background was just subtle enough that it worked. My nails had grown out 4-5 days at that point which is why I have so much free cuticle space (gross) but they were too cute not to post! So enjoy the bonus extra guinea pig photograph 🙂

Wild Ripples

Super straightforward but still pretty! Mostly because putting awesome teal flakies over slightly darker teal-blue polish is a recipe for nail happiness 🙂

IMG_1929

Unfortunately I broke a nail prior to painting these, so my free edge is curved. I briefly thought about cutting my nails shorter but flat…but to cut them flat would have been to make them VERY short and I didn’t relish that thought! So, here we are.

Mystical Blue Sea Monster

This is a rather fun manicure! I was in the mood for mystical creatures and I have done about 7 dragon manis thus far…but never a Nessie! So, enjoy the Loch Ness monster. But cuter. And purple.

IMG_5799

All the designs came from the same plate, which was quite lucky. The version of the fairytale plate that I have is not stamped all that well on one side, but works like a charm on the other! Luckily, the parts of the plate that I needed for this manicure picked up well. I also got to make some fun multi-color blob stamps for the waves 🙂

Ocean Surf

Summer time! Well, sort of. In St Louis it went from 99 degrees and sunny to 75 and raining. I prefer the colder and rainier, but it makes this less fitting! Anyway, I really like the mani 🙂

IMG_2409

The design was inspired by the ever-awesome Copycat Claws (and yes I saw this posted a year ago and have been waiting to do my own version since then)! Unfortunately the shell and starfish charms that I own are SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than I expected, and than were required for this mani. So I improvised.

IMG_8835

I started with a teal creme polish, and topped it with a darker teal jelly. Once that was dry, I stamped using white polish. I then topped the white stamp with two coats of the same teal jelly polish. On the nails with sand and water, I blobbed the teal jelly in a haphazard pattern somewhat overlapping the textured glitter to make it look like sand underwater. I then then added white surf by hand using part of an (unused) kitchen sponge. Since my textured polish is pretty simple, over the textured glitter I dabbed on some gold holo glitters for a more interesting base.

IMG_2411

Unfortunately, the ocean charms I have are rather small! I ended up sponging on some white polish so they would stand out against the gold base, since the charms and the textured polish were almost exactly the same color! Yikes. Even sadder, the pearl charms I have are much larger than, say, the starfish and clamshell charms, so I grabbed some cute pink rhinestones instead and am going to pretend they are sea glass 😀

IMG_8848

Anyway, that’s all for today! I hope you enjoyed 🙂 Stay tuned for some more pretty nail art this week!

Fiery Ripples

This mani is simple, but looked kinda amazing. And I had nothing to do with that fact. It was 110% the polish that I used!

IMG_6785

Anyway, the polish of the day is Fired Up by ILNP. This polish is amazing. What you see here are three thin coats. First off, I had 0 clean up with this. Nothing. The polish was perfect to apply, which is fairly rare. Second, the color is drop dead gorgeous. It is a silver-white scattered holographic base swimming with bright orange shimmer that shifts through gold to green at sharp angles (you can see the green reflection off neighboring nails). I love it.

IMG_6699

Once that I was dry, I stamped with a swishy ripple design from one of the born pretty store plates that is labeled in non-english, so I cannot type it up! but it is full of pseudo water marble patterns. The white polish is, as always, Snow me White by Sinful Colors.

IMG_1790 copy

And that’s it, that’s the mani. I feel like I usually have a bunch more to say, but I am too busy staring at these photos to say much. I love the polish. I want to wear it again right now.

IMG_6789

For those of you who are curious, the only other similar polish I own is Rosewater by ILNP (they came out with a whole line of them) and I think the shimmer in Fired Up is maybe a hair more intense…but mostly Rosewater is a vibrant pink and Fired Up is a bright orange. Same basic concept otherwise!

IMG_1791 copy

Hope you enjoyed! My plan for next week is a bit different…I am going to put together swatch test comparisons for a bunch of similar polishes that I own, in an effort to help others makes buying polish easier, but mostly because I need to destash some of my polish before I move! Oops. So, stay tuned for swatch comparisons!

The Ocean is Kooky Dooks

I knew I wanted to make beautiful tropical sea nails just before I left for my honeymoon to Hawaii. I also sweet talked my husband into watching Moana (for like the 20394830th time) in preparation, and somehow these nails came out looking like Moana ocean! I am pleased.

IMG_6468

I love how these nails looked in person, but between the dark blue and the bright teal, in photos I ended up with lobster fingers! I’ve tried to somewhat color adjust for that, but I don’t know how successful I really way.

IMG_6457

The double stamping (silver and white) looked fun, but there is a part of me that wonders if the mani would have looked better with just a single stamp? I will never know!

IMG_6452

That’s all for today! I thought I would throw in a mani that didn’t have a brand new polish in it for the first time in a while :-p Enjoy!

Ripple Down

Raindrops are totally a pattern, right? So droplets must be! I was going to create a nautilus shell, but I didn’t want to spend hours painting each nail…I settled on this and I rather love it.

IMG_1132

The design was actually inspired by a previous design of my own, Pond Ripples. Since I obviously still have the same colors, and I recently bought a new copy of the stamping plate I used (that now picks up much MUCH better), I was planning to exactly copy the design…but THEN I tested my teal flakies over a bunch of other polishes and picked a different base!

IMG_7442

If nothing else, this mani is insanely glittery. Not in a holographic way, but just…a lot of layers of shimmer. You cannot tell in the photos but when I shift my nails its mesmerizing. I am also glad I bought a new copy of this plate, I really love this stamp!

IMG_1173

I actually added matte top coat to one finger just to see if I liked it better (because I have to do that whenever I add flakies) and although it was pretty, I liked the depth of shimmer better with shiny top coat. Shiny it is! Hope you enjoyed 🙂

Pool Floating

I know it is getting just a bit cold to go swimming, but I painted these back in August so it was appropriate then! Besides, there are totally indoor pools, right?

IMG_6938

The design was inspired by pricelessnails. Unfortunately, I did not quite figure out the spacing for my inner tube (the pink thing) so it is a bit…squished…compared to hers.

IMG_6912

This is another new polish for me! What you see here is two thin coats of Glee Ridden by Emily de Molly. I have so many manis that I want to do that need a neon teal, and this looked perfect! It is, as expected, a very nice opaque neon teal creme. The color is slightly greener than turquoise, but very very bright! I am a fan.

IMG_9855

I think I maybe should have done a bit more of a subtle gradient (that blue is darker than I expected, the polish used to be a semi-jelly and I think its congealed a bit), but this still came out well! I love how the waterspotting worked. I got a new white polish not too long ago so it actually spread on the water!

Beachside

I realize that this is both blue and tan, but give JUST HOW MANY BLUE POLISHES I USED (omg) I am counting it as the day 5, Blue, post for the 31 Day Challenge.

IMG_6810

This design was inspired by majikbeenz who actually has a lovely tutorial! Which of course I only found after I was done since I was simply using a pinterest pin. Whoops!

IMG_9549

I basically started with a light blue base and then painted on each of the other blues. And glitters. And flakies. Oh my! I think what really makes this is the textured sand (I knew I could still find uses for those textured polishes!) and the white surf at the border with the sand.

What do you guys think? A fitting “blue” day? I like it at least :-p

Palm Lake Sunset

This mani came out both quite good and quite terribly! I had a particular design in mind which I realized was NOT going to work after I put down the base color…so I switched it up!

IMG_6416

The one I ended up going with was inspired by Christabell Nails. That being said, you can very clearly see that she was trying to do a sunset reflection over water, and I think you can only tell with mine cause I’m telling you! Yes. That is supposed to be water below the sun.

IMG_8208

I started this with yet another new polish (I really need to impose a no-buy!). Shown here is two thin coats of Playing Koi by Essie. I got this on a whim because I had seen it two or three times and I decided I really did need a very dark orange…and I’m honestly glad! It’s much darker than my current “dark” orange and it is a really cool color. Somewhere between orange and brown, with a lot of red thrown in.

IMG_8256

IMG_6423

I am not going to list all the colors that I used, because I changed what I was doing with this mani halfway through and re-gradiented over an already half-done gradient (how does this still look ok??). That is also why the finish is so darn uneven…It looked much better in person. Whoops!

IMG_8228

I do regret adding the clouds…I just thought the sky looked a little empty. Now it looks a bit diseased? Live and learn.

Nemo and Dory

I painted these in May of 2016…so I should probably actually post them. I just wanted to wait until I had enough disney-themed manis to post them all in a week! Whoops.

IMG_8730

This mani was inspired by Finding Nemo. Yes, these are super-stylized, yes I still think it’s cool!

IMG_3478

I got the idea from Klo’s to me, although she used much brighter aqua for her underwater…I wish I had a similar blue but I just don’t! So mine is more of a teal-based blue. Either way, I loved her idea for the surf!

IMG_3479

That’s all for today! Any other Disney or Pixar movies I should work on painting (I mean, and hopefully posting less than a year after they were initially painted)?

Sea or Sky

I kept thinking that this mani looked like swirling sea water (with ice on it) or a fancy stone…and my husband saw celestial bodies and stars. So sea or sky, which do you guys see?

img_5475

Regardless, I have another new polish to share! This one was sent to me to review from the Born Pretty Store. It’s a thermal polish with copious silver glitter in  it, and is quite pretty! Oddly, when I looked at it online, it looked like a bright blue when warm and a deep purple when cold….but in person, its more of a blue-teal when warm and a deep blue-jean shade of blue when cold. Not as exciting as blue and purple, but still pretty! I wonder if they changed the formulation?

img_5414

Regardless, 009 by VCND Bluesky covered very nicely in three thin coats. I used thin coats to get maximal glitter coverage! It dries to a semi-matte, but does dry fairly fast. The best part is the glitter spread…I didn’t have to go digging for the larger hex glitters at all, and despite the glitter load the polish spread smoothly. The warm color is a bright teal-leaning blue, while the dark color is the shade of blue jeans. There isn’t a huge difference between the two colors, honestly…but both are pretty and the glitter is really nice!

~ Blue thermal: VCND  Bluesky – 009
~ Light blue: Zoya – Yummy
~ Dark blue: Zoya – Ibiza

img_5434

I couldn’t decide what to stamp, so I did a quasi water-marble instead. I wanted to do blues with silver (and clear to allow the thermal polish to show through) but the silver I grabbed formed these awesome clumps instead of marbling…so I just went with it! It was much more fun making this messy clumpy marble than it was trying to perfect an elegant and smooth water marble, so win!

img_5460

If you want to pick up this blue glittery thermal for yourself, you can find it at the Born Pretty StoreBorn Pretty Store for $4.99. I think its important to point out that this is a mini bottle (only 7.5ml). You can also use my 10% off code, LY5X31!

Ripples of Blush

I had SUCH A HARD TIME picking out a name for this mani! Ripples? Droplets? Anything with “nude” in it sounded dirty and scandalous, which is sooo not what I was going for here. I was aiming for “subtle and tasteful” so I don’t upset the bigwig I am meeting with tomorrow morning. I hope I accomplished it!

IMG_5140

Once I go back to work in the hospital, I imagine you will be seeing a lot more manis like this one. I got the idea from work/play/polish (for all that her blog hasn’t been updated in months 😦 ), to do some work-appropriate manis once I have to go back into the hospital. We’ll see if they let me wear nail polish at all!

IMG_5126

This is maybe one of the reasons I’ve been stocking up on nude-toned holos and shimmers. If I can only wear a solid color (oh dear) at least it should be shiny! Even stranger…I don’t think I’ve NOT worn nail art of SOME type since I started this blog, 3.5 years ago. If my nails have polish, they also have designs!

Whales

It has been a while since I’ve done a 100% cute mani, so I thought it was time! Thus, I present tiny adorable whales 😀

IMG_2138

This mani was inspired by dry dammit. I even matted it, as I like the result matted! There is one pre-matte photo in the post, just so you guys can see how shiny the blue was before I made it un-shiny.

IMG_3835

Maybe I should at some point try painting my beta fish. Then again, he is a ridiculous concoction of mermaid/peacock colors with a giant spiky tail…so maybe not.

Teal-drops

Like water droplets, but in teal! Today’s prompt was “inspired by a color”. Usually, I would just go ahead and do rainbows for this prompt, but I was feeling lazy. Instead, I grabbed Teal Opaque by Mentality and a stamp that I haven’t gotten to work due to tiny tiny lines, and went to town!

IMG_7190

You guys. THE STAMP WORKED. Turns out stamping polishes really ARE the best for stamping. Who knew? I usually get away with just using a thick older polish, but polish MADE for stamping takes the cake. This awesome droplet stamp by Emily de Molly had been making me want to cry for weeks, because I love it but it kept failing on me! Turns out I just needed stamping polish.

IMG_7154

All the teal in this mani is Turquoise Opaque by Mentality. I was technically sent this polish for review, but then Mentality decided to release its bloggers to the wild (*roar*?), so I feel included to use it but not to show you a swatch on its own. On my ring and thumb I used two thin coats of Turquoise Opaque, which went on surprisingly smoothly for a stamping polish. It is ever-so-slightly brush-stroky. That being said, it stamps like a champ!

IMG_7185

My other nails got one coat of Black on Black by Sinful Colors. The black stamping was done using Black Opaque by Mentality, since my previous use (a dried up Black on Black…I think have 3 bottles in various stages of drying out) didn’t work at all. Black Opaque worked though!

IMG_9979

I finished it off by adding diagonal lines of the stamping color (for fun) and then either black caviar beads or blue striping tape. Sadly, I don’t own teal striping tape, but this was fun anyway! Maybe I should have used silver caviar beads though, you can barely see them!

IMG_9974

Hope you enjoyed! Maybe by the end of this challenge I’ll have used all my EdM images. I doubt it, but there is a possibility! :-p

Pond Ripples

The application that I write my posts on needs to start behaving. I wrote a whole post (again) today and just went and disappeared! Ugh. Today’s prompt was “travel.” I thought about palm trees, but that was too easy. Then my new stamping plates arrived!!! Llarowe was having a sale, and I just had to get some of the Emily de Molly stamping plates, because they are stunning and I’ve never seen anything like them (well, ok, maybe Messy Mansion has some, and MoYou but I don’t own any of them).

IMG_4171

This particular design caught my eye, because it looked like ripples in water, so I decided to turn it into a pond! That technically counts as travel since there are no ponds near me :-p. Anyway, the stamp rather failed…which is to say I used one of my newer black polishes. It turns out (and I only went looking AFTER I finished this mani) that stamps with super-fine lines like this need special stamping polish. I don’t own special stamping polish, but I do own some old mostly empty bottles of black and white that I use to stamp! So I’ll try that next time.

IMG_4148

IMG_4197

I did practice this stamp the day after I did this mani, and it works great on paper…with the aforementioned thick black polish. Oops :-(. I was really disappointed with how this came out, because the stamp was stunning and the base was awesome and it just didn’t come together how I wanted! Oh well.

Watery Fields of Gold

More neon matte Mentality polishes! This bit of art was inspired by myself! More or less. I just like swirls of color with lines between them, although this one was completely random swirls!
IMG_3223
The base color here is a yellowish-green neon matte called Expunge. It is a super bright color, that looks slightly greenish in the bottle, but yellow on the nail. It’s pretty awesome. Shown here is three thickish coats (the color is a bit thin). It dries really fast.

IMG_3212
Everything except the gold is a Mentality polish, mostly because Mentality makes the best mattes and I wanted an all-matte mani! The brightest colors (yellow, green, blue) are from the new neon matte collection, the others are from older collections.
IMG_8676
You can pick up Expunge (or any of the others) at the Mentality Shop for $6.50. Enjoy!

Seaweed

Today’s theme for the OMD2 challenge was “jelly,” so I have decided that it is time for another jelly sandwich pattern! One of the only jellies (or almost jellies) that I have is a green glitter, so I settled on a seaweed pattern.

IMG_0040

This was made by painting white squiggly lines over a green base, and topping each of two layers of squiggles with my green jelly polish. Unfortunately, you can’t quite see the depth.

Tidepool

I love blue. I have not been particularly tempted buy any further blue textured polishes (I already owned one), just because none of them spoke to me. I picked up Sleigh Ride on a whim, and I am really glad I did.

IMG_4870

This polish is possibly my favorite textured polish, bar none. It is a beautiful vibrant true blue, with silver and light blue glitter. It is textured but does not catch on anything, and took only one coat to be opaque. I added two coats, and the color deepened a bit. It dried remarkably fast, and I cannot stop staring at my nails. This is the perfect blue.

IMG_4855

I wanted to add snowflakes for my art, but seeing as how it is still 70 degrees out, I figured ’tis not the season yet. Instead, I opted for water! The blue and glitter reminded me of sunlight passing through the surface of water, so I decided to do a shallow ocean design.

IMG_4863

So, here we have bubbles and a wave on my accent nail and thumb. I added some accents in another Julie G textured polish, and you can see that it looks almost grey/silver next to Sleigh Ride! Crazy.

  • Blue: Zoya – Yummy
  • Light blue: Sally Hansen – Breezy Blue

This mani is so much fun! And this polish is incredible. If you want Sleigh Ride and the rest of the collection, head to Jesse’s Girl right now for a pre-sale of the whole set! Julie G textured polishes can be found at Rite Aid for $4.

Water Droplets (OMG Nail Strips Review)

A few weeks ago, I was asked to do a review for OMGNailStrips.com, of a nail strip of my choosing. They have many to choose from, but I settled on one with water droplets!

IMG_2466

I have to say, I am impressed with these! Application took <10 minutes, and they lasted without chipping for 3 days (the 4th day I went to hershey park, so that isn’t fair), and they were super easy to use! I have never used nail polish strips or stickers in the past. I am usually a polish purist…but I decided to try these.

Application was easy. They have a really clear video that I simply followed. I had to trim two of the strips to fit my (apparently very narrow) nails. The smallest strip fit my ring finger, so I trimmed one for my pinky and one for my pointer. I placed and replaced the one on my ring finger 4 times (yes, four) before deciding that I liked the placement. IT WAS STILL STICKY! I was amazed.

IMG_2464

The key seemed to be placing at the cuticle line, and pressing straight up the finger. Only then (and when it is positioned right, which took between 1 and 4 tries per nail) press out towards the lateral sides of your nail. Don’t try to stretch the sticker, just press it down. Even on my super-curvy and funny shaped pointer finger, there were no wrinkles with this polish strip!

IMG_3949

I have gotten more comments on my nails these past few days than I have in a while. Everyone wants to know if they are stickers and where I got them! I am really pleased with how well these worked, and am debating buying a few others (or some of their nail foils…I’ve never tried foils either, but now I trust this company!).

Steps:

  1. Find the polish strip that fits your nail best, or trim one to fit (seriously, do this before you remove the sticker backing. I had to clip one with a nail clipper when I realized it was too big after placing it on my nail, and it looked funny!). Cut that strip from the others.
  2. Peel off the shiny plastic coating on the front of the sticker
  3. Remove the sticker from the white back
  4. Place sticker on clean nail surface (no base coat needed, but make sure your cuticles are out of the way!)
  5. Press down on sticker from the base of your nail to the tip, then out towards the lateral edge of your nails. If you need to reposition the strips, do them before pressing all the way down! (Although, I did press all the way down and remove just to see what would happen. The sticker deformed a tiny bit as it stretched, but was fine!) Once you like the position, press down hard!
  6. File away the excess strip using a nail file horizontal to your nail. I tried to explain it with this photo, but really watch their video. The woman does a grew job explaining! (I have been using a cheap $1 file from Rite Aid for the last 6 months, and even I was able to file away the excess. So it isn’t hard)
  7. Dip a q-tip in polish remover, and gently wipe down the strip. This makes it ‘melt’ a little, and stick better to the nail. Wait for the strip to re-harden (5 minutes?) and add top coat.
  8. Admire your new and quick manicure!

IMG_3935
Included in the package are 14 nail strips (7 for each hand, so the sizes work), and that’s it! The package is not sealed (there is a small breathing hole) and so you know off the bat that you don’t have to worry about the strips drying out. I waited almost two weeks between opening them to admire them, and actually using them. They worked great!

There is a promotion going on right now: get 4 sets for $20 (saves around $5), each set costs $6.89. They also hold a giveaway every month on their Facebook page! Be sure to check them out:
