Neutral Marble Flowers

I wanted to water marble, but I also needed something subtle for the hospital! This is what I ended up with. If I am being honest I don’t love it, but it is certainly subtle and work-appropriate, and has watermarbling!

The oddest thing about working from home while being a doctor is how staffing is working at the moment. To try and keep the minimum people getting sick at once we are truly working in shifts: so I am working from home 3/4 days and only going into the hospital on day 4. This is a deeply weird time and I don’t know how I feel about it. St Louis is preparing for the storm of COVID patients, although we aren’t there quite yet. Stay tuned! And hope you maybe somewhat enjoyed these odd nails :-p

Yellorange Rise Marble

Yellow and orange? Check. Topographical map stamp? Check. Water marble? Sure why not! In summary I have no idea where I was going with this nail art but it ended up somewhere at least! The base is a yellow-orange thermal but it was weirdly warm and I could not get the darn thing to stay orange long enough to get a photo! Oh well :-p

Short and sweet, mostly because this is more strange than pretty. Hopefully I will have some better nail art for you later this week! Hope you enjoyed!

Jupiter in Purple

I love this mani. I have been meaning to make a watermable with glitter so that it looks variegated (instead of just swoopy lines, to get some irregularity) and this worked! It kinda looks like the surface of Jupiter to me, if Jupiter was purple and the red spot was also purple (my middle finger tip).

I’m not going to lie, the sparkly stripe down the middle of my ring finger was…augmented…with extra polish. There was already some glitter there, but I wanted MORE. It was so shiny!

In retrospect, I think these also look a bit like geode nails? People were obsessed with those for a while, and the craze somewhat seems to have died down. I never did paint my own geode nails, and I should honestly do that sometime soon! The ones others have done a pretty :-D. Hope you enjoyed these!

Pinky Swirl

I haven’t done water marbling in a while, and I figured it was time! Looking at these photos, I wish I had picked a few different colors, but all said and done this at least isn’t awful (I know, high praise) :-p

I used another new polish for the base, a shimmer silver called Ornament to Be Together by OPI. Honestly, while I enjoy puns in names as much as the next nerd, OPI is making their names a little too punny and a little too long. Oy. Anyway, it took three coats of Ornament to Be Together to get to this level of coverage, and I honestly still have some visible nail line. That said, in addition to the fine silver glitter that makes up this polish there are actual holo shimmers, which is a first that I’ve seen from OPI! It doesn’t hold a candle to most indie polishes, but still. Not bad in terms of glitter payoff (but still too thin for my nail line).

Since the silver wasn’t super opaque, and one of my other OPI polishes appeared to be a jelly, I decided to try and make a jelly-based water marble where the silver shined through at least the red. It worked, but the red was so thin that the other colors pushed it out! So the shimmery red is just a red jelly with the silver shimmer shining through.

~ Coral: L’Oreal – Orange you Jealous?
~ Pink: Zoya – Kelsey
~ Red: OPI – My Wish List is You

My strongest takeaway from this is that I totally need to try a full-jelly water marble over glitter at some point. I know my Zoya jellies will marble, but I tried my others and they don’t speed at all, so I would be suck with pink, red, purple, and blue, which is not the best combo. Anyone know of a yellow jelly that marbles?

Hope you enjoyed, and happy Friday!

Dark Lapis

The way this ended up, it looks like a super dark lapis lazuli stone! If I was really going to lapis I would have needed to use a gold-based glitter rather than a silver one, but I still like it. Unfortunately, the mani did end up quite dark. I suppose I could have placed the marble over white rather than blue, but it needed to match a specific dress!

To create this, I marbled polish on water, waited around 2 hours for it to dry completely, and then removed it. I then cut out decals from the dried polish, which is a first for me! I’ve been wanting to try this method of making water marble designs (lifting the marble once dry) for a while but never had the time to plan and execute it.

~ Blue: Sally Hansen – Blue my Mind
~ Dark blue: Zoya – Ibiza
~ Blue with silver: KBShimmer – Sapphire

Sadly, most of the photos I have of this design are out of focus, so there are only three pictures! Also, in retrospect, I have no idea how Sapphire marbled so well given its glitter content, but go KBShimmer!

Really, I just wanted to play with some fun colors for “watermarble” day! I actually tried 4 combos before settling on this one…the right mix of bright, dark, and glitter.

I’ve been trying to marble with glitter polishes more frequently, since I rather love the effect they leave. This particular set of colors didn’t end up with the glitter mixed into the creme polishes as much as I would have hoped, but I still like it! For some reason, none of the purple or blues I used wanted to play along…and I wasn’t willing to risk my really expensive polishes just to see if they would marble.

I ended up using a bunch of polishes for this, and lets be honest, you probably cannot tell which is which in the photos! I named them all regardless :-p

Day 20….we are almost 2/3 through the 31 Day Challenge! And at this point I have completed all by the last day’s nail art. I like to pick from within the challenge for the honors nails you love prompt…I have a few ideas, but I am waiting around to see if someone does something that blows me away (and that I can imitate, cause lets be honest I would love to do ANYTHING Coewless has done for this challenge but I am simply not skilled enough). Hope you enjoyed!

Remember how I mentioned on Monday that I finally had time for bright manis? Well, here is one of them!
Sometime over the last few months I went hunting for the OPI Washington DC collection because there where a whole bunch of polishes that I wanted from it (which is honestly rare). I ended up getting 5 (plus a random red). In retrospect, only two of those 5 were ones I’m actually going to get much use out of! Silly past-Eva.
One of the ones I am really glad I got is this, Never a Dulles Moment. There are a few reasons I like this polish…even though I hate the color yellow. I have fewer yellow polishes in my collection than anything else by a substantial margin…but every now and then one is unique enough that I want it. This polish is a nice darker yellow, almost a mustard color (not quite fugly), and I figured i was time. Anyway, Never a Dulles Moment is a bit finicky…it does not self-level (but it is a yellow, so that’s just what happens with them). That said, it did try very fast. It took three thin coats to be opaque, but dried speedily enough that I didn’t mind.

~ Light orange: OPI – Freedom of Peach
~ Orange: ULTA – Sun of a Gun
~ Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
~ White: Sinful Colors – Snow me White
~ Stamp: BP – L008
There are only a few reasonable way to wear yellow on your nails (rather than as a highlight color) and since I had already done flames recently…I had to make a gradient with orange and then watermarble. The gradient actually features another of the OPI DC polishes, but it will get its own post in the future. Hope you enjoyed!

Swamped Marble

I’ve had this sitting in my folder since January  and since today is Saint Patrick’s Day, the green and gold is totally appropriate! I mostly just like green 🙂

Back when Zoya was having a sale, I bought two very similar green cream polishes. Jace is the second of the two green Zoya cremes…and honestly, I like her less than Tilda, the other. As it turns out, Jace is almost in the middle between Shawn (a darker yellow-toned green) and Tilda (a bright true-green)…which since Tilda dries darker than expected means that the spectrum of shades covered is actually much smaller than I thought. I do not need all three polishes, whoops!

The other sad part is that Jace takes three coats. And not three thin coats, three medium-thick coats. I even tried to use Jace as a jelly, but it is just slightly too opaque for that! The polish does self-level nicely and dries down to a super squishy high shine finish, but I want my two-coat perfect coverage Zoya creme, and this polish isn’t!

I’ve been seeing a lot of creme+glitter water marbles recently, and I love how they look like the clouds swirling around a foreign planet (like, if someone did them in brick red, orange, and white, it would look like Jupiter). So, I tried to make one in green! It actually WORKED (first time I’ve gotten glitter to spread and behave in water!), but I need to figure out the ideal way to swirl the actual design before I try this again (…which is how I got the “Sea or Sky” to work).

My thumb, which I did last, actually came out best. Frequently with water marbles, I am so fed up with trying to get the polish to behave that I give up by the time I get to my thumb, but I was inspired this time. And it looks awesome (if I do say so myself).

You can barely see any of the green glitter, and it was the least spread-able, but I wanted to use it anyway. Low and behold, the ILNP ultra holographic metallic polishes spread really nicely in water and actually behave well! I’ll need to play more with this….stay tuned! Hope you enjoyed!

Robustly Red Marble

Well, I’ve already done my best water marble for this challenge, so now you guys have to endure my somewhat-less-than awesome one! Sorry!

I kept pulling different colors for this, because half of the ones I initially wanted to use didn’t marble nicely 😦 so I ended up with shades of red and a nude, rather than an orange-purple-red-nude-silver combo like I wanted!

I double-dipped my ring finger and had to re-do my pinky. Overall, this was a fail. I tried so hard too! A better marble is coming up on the 30th, I promise.

Ah well, apparently marbling in front of my AC unit is not my best idea yet!

I really had no idea what to call this. I got inspiration from Tiffany White because OH MY GOD WATER MARBLE! In addition to now lusting heavily for the A Night In Vegas collection, apparently there is a clear polish MEANT for water marbling? Which would be GREAT because I’ve been trying to clear marble for a while and I can’t find a single polish that does it. I need it.

ANYWAY. I went nuts. I started with the rainbow water marble base you saw last month…and then tried to emulate Tiffany with chevron decals and black. Only I had to use a matte black because matte + rainbows = awesome. But there was too much black (I guess my decals are smaller than hers?) so I added lots of dots. And then I just gave up because it looks like a unicorn puked on my nails.

I actually can’t decide if I like these or if I’m going to have a rainbow-induced seizure.

So, enjoy the rainbows! And lines and dots and woah. I think I’m off rainbows for a while!

Retro Slats

This mani was…um…a pain in the butt. It has been a while since I water marbled, and I thought it was time to do so again! Which went great…until I tried to dip my pointer and pinky in at the same time (you know, to save polish) and I double dipped. Both of them. Because I couldn’t clean around them without taking them out of the water.

So, in the wake of my somewhat failed water marble (did I mention that I used a black shimmer that decidedly turned see-through? That is why there is so much golden-pink. That was all supposed to be black shimmer), I decided to say forget it, and stamp over it. Using something interesting enough that you can’t tell I messed up 2/5 nails 😀

Enter the Born Pretty Store stamping plate 21. I have had this plate for MONTHS and never used it (because I’m silly sometimes) but (a) it stamps great and (b) all the designs are full-nail and high-coverage. Yay!

Cosy Watermarble

My boyfriend reminded me that I hadn’t done a water marble in a while. So, I had to do one! I am actually rather pleased with how this came out.

The colors I chose did some…interesting…things in the water. The green almost got swallowed up, so you can barely see it (but it is there) and the red bled all over the nude on two of my nails but not the others! I still like it.

It is insanely difficult (read: impossible) to marble with glitters, but I wanted my mani to have some sparkle, so I added a bit of glitter jazz over one color on each nail. Ta-da!

Mummies aka Flying Spaghetti Monsters

I hate my boyfriend. I showed him these nails saying “look! They’re mummies!” and he replies, at full volume “FLYING SPAGHETTI MONSTERS! You should make a Pastafarian post!” So here, spaghetti monsters that I swear are actually mummies.

To make these, I followed one of the mani youtube tutorials. Last year, I hand-painted mummies and it took FOREVER so this year I went the water marble way! Much much faster, but less mummie-like. I can see why my boyfriend was confused. I also matted them this year, which was an awesome idea. Although, they look too clean to be long dead. Fresh mummies!

Happy Halloween! Enjoy collecting candy! I will be out being all formal and rehearsal-dinnery. I wish I could wear a costume, but I don’t think the bride would approve!

Purple Grey Swirl

I seldom manage to get my boyfriend involved in nail art (he is properly appreciative, but doesn’t generally participate!) but the other day I asked him to pick two to three colors for my nail art, and he responded with “purple and silver!” So I went with it.

This nail art is just a random water marble involving two shades of purple and a grey, with some silvers dots. Not the best water marble I’ve ever done, but it is rather cute! Also, my nails are rather long 🙂

***Other news: I am (yet again) entered in a nail art contest over at Nail Polish Canada. If you haven’t yet, I would be very much obliged if you clicked this link, scrolled to the bottom, and voted for ‘flightofwhimsy’. Thank you! 🙂 ***

Metallic Madness

I really wanted to play with some of my metallic polishes, I had been a while and they were lonely. 3 stood out as fitting nicely in a gradient, so I just went with it!

My accent nail is a marble of the three colors, but they are unfortunately so close to each other you can hardly tell. So I added dots (I like dots).

  • Teal: P2 – Lost in Paradise
  • Blue: Wet n’ Wild – Caribbean Frost
  • Green: Zoya – Holly
  • Silver: A England – Excalibur

The stamp is from Bundle Monster plate 314. Simple, but fun! And I got to use my poor ignored metallics 🙂

Muted Rainbows and Marble

This post started out as a GREAT idea…another rainbow gradient with water marble! The last one didn’t go as well as I had hoped, so I wanted to try again. This one still didn’t work. Maybe I should give up on this theme?

The gradient came out fine, if not quite as saturated as I would like. Most of the polish here is one of the colors from the Nabi Holographic collection, over the silver from the same line. Some Darling Divas and a Gothic Gala thrown in for fun.

I tried to water marble with black, light grey (my white polish is sadly too thick to marble at this point), and clear…and yah. Oops! The grey is too translucent and the clear didn’t spread as well as I would have hoped.

  • Grey: Maybelline – Bare Escape
  • White: Zoya – Purity
  • Clear shimmer: Sally Hansen – Platinum
  • Black: Sinful Colors – Black on Black
  • Silver (base color): Darling Diva – Diamond
  • Red: Nabi – Red
  • Orange: Nabi – Brone
  • Yellow: Nabi – Gold
  • Green: Darling Diva – Green Diamond
  • Blue: Darling Diva – Blue Diamond
  • Purple: Gothic Gala Lacquers – Vallis Sanguine

Maybe, someday, this will work. If I work up the courage to try it a third time. Meh!
