Pink Along the Circle

I have no idea. I just started playing with things and ended up here? I wanted grey, red, and pink, and somehow wound up turning to this pattern.

IMG_4783

I started with a light grey base and layered one coat of a glitter polish overtop, to give it some flakies. I then stamped, and dotted the rest of the pattern. The only really fun part of this design is that I mixed red and white and just swirled them together, so the dot color is variegated.

IMG_4793

That’s it for today! A bit of an odd design with a bit of an odd collection of colors, but overall not terrible :-p.

Icy Winds

I wanted something that looked like icy wind blowing, so I ended up with this! Just the stamp over the (admittedly awesome) base wasn’t interesting enough, so me being me, I added some dots. I kinda love it!

img_5022

It also ended up accidentally being incredibly timely, as we are supposed to have a “massive” (about 1ft) snow storm in the next 48 hours and they are making beds at the hospital for the doctors to sleep there if we need to. Luckily, I live walking distance away. I cannot imaging having to sleep in the hospital (if I am not on overnight call)!

Swirling Flakes

Snowflakes! More snowflakes! Snowflakes on a windy background! I decided I wanted more color so on top of Downpour (the dark blue) I dry marbled some Party Favor (teal), then stamped with Yummy (lighter blue) before stamping with silver.

IMG_3436

Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, for some reason most of the photos came out blurry. So today there are only a few photos (although 3 does tend to be normal for me now) and I did my best to pick in-focus ones!

Maybe I should have posted something a bit more Christmas-y today, but all my manis got pushed back a day, so my official christmas mani will go up on Wednesday and holiday nails will continue through Friday. Oops! Enjoy anyway :-p

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

This is my entry for this years nail art canada holiday challenge! I have entered for the past 5 or so years, and last year I won the internal competition! Most years I just pick my very favorite holiday mani that I had done up to that point…but this year I painted something specifically for the challenge. I have to say I am quite pleased! The design itself was based off a press-on nail set by Project Nails.

IMG_3697

I started with a blue holographic base (mostly because I wanted to use a one-coat base and the halo hues collection from Color Club are basically magic). I then brush-gradiented using blue and purple scattered holo crellies and splotched on some dark teal jelly. Once that was all top coated and dry, it was design time!

IMG_5306

I basically freehanded some rooftops, then a moon, then snow, and finally windows and sled. The hardest part of the whole thing was certainly the reindeer, I still don’t love them but without using acrylic I think this is the best I can do! The only part of this mani that isn’t free-handed is the stars: those are stamps. The top of the moon was made from playing with variations of white and yellow to make a little gradient.

Please go vote for this entry in the challenge, it would be amazing to win! You can find the link here and sprinkled throughout the rest of this post. I will keep posting the link for the remainder of the contest. Hope you enjoyed, and thank you for voting!!

Swirling Flakes on Grey

I just keep wearing this polish! Grey Opal might be my favorite buy from Polish Pickup Pack (its from probably a year ago at this point), because it is amazingly shimmery and flakie-y, but it still just subtle enough to totally get away with in the hospital!

IMG_2830

I also finally used up my bottle of the original Excalibur (my go-to silver polish for just about anything), and about a year ago bought a replacement (this is the best stamping silver ever), but now it is “Renaissance” because they replaced Excalibur with some weird gold/silver flake combo which, while pretty, does not at ALL serve the purpose of the original bottle. That said, this formula is still fantastic 😀

Colors:
~ Grey flakie: Polished for Days – Grey Opal

IMG_2838

Super simple, but quite pretty! And work-appropriate as long as no one notices all the colors hidden in the flakies. Win for everyone! Hope you enjoyed and happy Friday 🙂

Swirling Wind

I don’t know what I was aiming for with this mani! I wanted something that looked cold and windy (it snowed for the first time on Friday, and is supposed to snow again today) and it felt appropriate! I started with a grey-white shimmery base and added some stamped swirls, and then colored them in. I don’t know if this was the best idea, or if I should have gone for some creme polishes to color in the wind!

IMG_3926

Regardless, the base color her is a new polish called Sandy by KBShimmer. It is from the August PPP. The swatches I saw made it look beautiful, which it is, but I didn’t look correctly at the layer count. This is three THICK coats, and the second time I wore it, it took 4 coats! No one has time for that. So, while I do like how it looks, I think I am relegating it to a topper. Fail.

IMG_1004

That said, the polish is a pretty pale grey with lots of purple shimmer than shits to blue, and tons of silver holo shards. I am currently into polishes with silver shards, for whoever reason! The base is a crelly for ease of sparkle, but I know (because I own) crellys that are 2-3 coats and not 3-4 coats. This polish is not easy to use.

IMG_1032

Colors:
~ Grey with shimmer: KBShimmer – Sandy
~ Purple shimmer: OPI – Ink
~ Grey holo: Emily de Molly – Shadow on the Moon

IMG_1024

So, windy and long-winded (I think I’m funny). Overall, this mani was more time-consuming than pretty, and most of that is due to the base color. Live and learn! Hope you enjoyed 🙂

Wintry Twirls

The stamp I used here is a bit odd. It is mostly swirls and twirls, but also has stars and for some reason a pine tree? Either way, I seemed like something fun to use in the wintertime…and even more fun to randomly cover with golden shimmery glitter!

IMG_4521

Basically, this is another ‘stamp with white over nude and add GLITTER’ which, in addition to swirly designs, seems to be my MO when I need something somewhat subtle but still fun. I also just quietly enjoy the subtle shimmer in the nude base.

IMG_4546

I feel the need to give a little shout-out to this particular stamping plate, I don’t use it often because I own so many darn stamps…but it is super deeply etched and always transfers beautifully. I should move it to the front of my image plates, not the back!

IMG_4540

That’s it for today! One last final boring mani on Friday, and then we can move on to more colorful things 🙂

Icy Swirls

Continuing with the theme of subtle, snowy, and swirled, we have this post! By this point in the interview season I was giving up on the very bland manis that I sported in the beginning, and was firmly in the realm of mints and golds and a bit more contrast.

IMG_4156

That said, I still deemed this subtle enough to wear! It is another of my favorites, and it helped that during this particular interview it definitely snowed! It is always fun when my nail art predicts the weather :-p

IMG_4210

I do need to get some more snowflake stamps, on the off chance that I have time to do nail art next winter (this whole residency thing is becoming far more real, I need to put together my actual list and cross my fingers!), since most of the plates I have don’t stamp well!

IMG_8247

Happy Friday! One more week of interview-friendly posts before I jump feet first back into colorful posts!

Darkened Desert

This mani isn’t quite winter-themed, but I think the dark colors work regardless. Also, I really couldn’t think of what to call this mani but the colors remind me of the Southwest so desert it is!

IMG_8123

What you see here are two coats of O R’YLEH (which, how do I correctly uncapitolize? O R’yleh? O R’Yleh?) by Great Lakes Lacquer. This polish really could have been opaque in one coat but I didn’t know that, so my application was uneven. That said, the polish is a bit thicker than I expected and you need to work fast or it will dry and drag.

IMG_3595

The polish itself is beautiful, with a dark green base with lots of holo shimmer. It also has a multichrome shimmer to it that shifts from bright fuchsia pink through copper and to gold. It’s a chameleon! Unfortunately, it was also a Polish Pickup Pack October exclusive, so as far as I know there is no way to buy it. But if you like the concept, think about joining the PPP before this month’s offers are gone too!

IMG_3649

I don’t know exactly how I ended up with this color scheme, but it doesn’t look half bad. I wouldn’t typically mix orange, teal, and yellow (ewwww yellow) with something like a deep green. Or a rose gold!

IMG_8120

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed, and happy almost New Years! I don’t plan at this moment to have a special New Years post, but maybe I can find something I haven’t had time to post that I sufficiently glittery. If not, I’ll just kick off my “top 10 of 2017” posts with regards to my favorite polishes and nail art.

Snowflake Multichrome

Snowflake time! I figured it was about right to start posting some real winter nail art. However, I am also sick so these almost didn’t get edited since I slept half the day!

IMG_3780

The design was inspired by Sveta Sanders <<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZamJx99H4wo>>, because I keep stalking her instagram and finding new awesome things that I need to replicate. Now, she used chrome powder and I used multichrome nail polish, but the result was the same. Next time (and there will be a next time, I rather love this), I will use a slightly more consistent design than snowflakes.

IMG_8155

I am also glad that my nails are much less stained than they used to (I think I have the interview season to thank for not being able to wear any bright blues or dark greens), so I can actually have some naked nails! This will never happen again, sadly.

IMG_8147

I have at least two other snow-themed manis coming up at some point, I hate painting snowflakes but I love stamping them! I should, at some point, buy a dedicated snowflake plate.

IMG_3805

Hope you enjoyed!

Cold Winds

I wanted to do some bare trees in the winter…with a sunset-like color changing background. Ta-da! I just need to remind myself never to paint trees again. It takes too darn long!

IMG_4846

The base color is a triple-color thermal polish called Winds of Change by Bow Polish. Winds of Change is a complicated polish: it is a light blue-grey when warm, a magenta when medium-cold, and a dark purple when cold. It has a nice smattering of holo shards in it as well. The polish takes 3 coats to be opaque in its lightest color (the warm blue-grey), and dries matte without top coat. All my images are with top coat. I really like all three of the colors it turns to…although it is warm enough in my apartment that I had to keep dunking my fingers in cold water to show the shift!

IMG_4714

I ended up taking a LOT of photos. I’ve tried to include ones that show the full range of colors…either with all three on the nail, or at least the darker two (since the blue is visible in almost every photo). Sometimes my warming-up nails after I dunked them in cold water looked really goofy (they warmed in a radial pattern from the middle of my nail…so the trees looked like they were growing into a vortex).

IMG_4729

I do wish I had left more of Winds of Change showing…I certainly will next time! I like the trees, but they ended a bit denser than I planned. Also, in retrospect, I should have posted these before the snow passed, since it is now spring time and these are snowy trees!

Hidden Snow

This is actually appropriate! I am posting this today (and another super cool mani on Friday) just so that next week I can post my top 10 polishes of 2016 and include these ones. Cause they are awesome.

img_3718

This truly fantastic polish is Thermo Top Coat in black by Bow polish. It is wonderful. I didn’t use it on its own, because the best part of this polish is how it works with designs! The polish is a nude-grey when warm and a black when cold. I don’t know if the nude color is opaque on its own, I layered this over a nude polish. It did grey the base a little, but you can hardly tell!

img_3786

What you see here is two coats of the thermo top coat over a nude base. The black stamped pattern is underneath the thermo polish (so in the warm state, what you see is how much the black lines were color dampened). The thermo polish also has a generous but not overwhelming amount of scattered holo glitter, which really pop in the cold/black state, and are pretty and subtle in the warm/nude state! The polish dries down to a semi-matte (I didn’t take photos since I needed to top coat before stamping the snowflakes, sorry!) and as such dries fast.

img_3720

Two more awesome things about the bow thermal polish:
1) it didn’t smudge the stamp! The black pattern is between two layers of the thermal polish (although being honest, I probably only needed one coat…I had planned for two so I went with it, but I imagine the white base would be less greyed-put if I had just done one coat). Despite not adding ‘real’ top coat over the black patterned stamp before adding the next layer of thermal, there is 0 smudging. Yay!
2) the polish goes on in the ‘dark’ color (aka black) so it is really easy to clean up and not miss something.

Hope you enjoyed! I want to use this polish again soon…lets see if I can get away with it on my current rotation? Maybe? Oh well! Still awesome.

Falling Flakes

Happy after-Christmas and third day of Hanukkah! I need to get a move on making some menorah nails if I want them edited within the next 5 days :-p.

img_2818

These were inspired by @simplenailartdesigns, although its a bit hard to say anything with a blue gradient and snowflakes was inspired by any particular person, its such a common design!

img_2809

Regardless, I like how these came out. I added little silver glitters to the center of the snowflakes a few hours later, so the sunlight photos have glittery bits too 🙂

Christmas and winter manis galore! Starting out this week with something more winter-y than Christmas-y, but we’ll get there!

img_3568

This design was inspired by badgirlnails. I just need to permanently bookmark everything she does. These are adorable!

Winter Leaves

Grey leaves for winter! This was inspired by Christabellnails although her leaves were better! Also, I was bored with the solid grey nails so I added leave veins with textured polish.

img_3072

I need to stop trying to paint full-veined leaves on my fingers. I’ve done it maybe 3 times this year and it never works out right!

img_3075

Also, I can’t wait for snow. Its finally started falling below freezing in Philly, so maybe we won’t get a repeat of the craziness that was last year (when it was 80 degrees outside on Christmas). Then again, its currently freezing rain here, so maybe I take it back…

Grey and Wintry

This is what I was wearing on my other hand, that I talked about on Wednesday (the Teal post). It is seasonally appropriate for sure, but not bright!

IMG_1866

The design was very loosely inspired by Chit Chat Nails. Only, I wanted more stamps. I need better snowflakes, mine barely pick up!

IMG_2615

So this is what I was talking about…this design is wintry but very dark! The other hand was much simpler but also colorful. I also think its pretty easy overall to stamp…and much harder to work precisely with tape! Then again, maybe thats just me.

Winter Snowflake French

Another wintry mani! This was was supposed to be a little more subtle, but I still like it. Glitter and snowflakes, always fun 🙂

IMG_1663

The nail art was inspired by PiggieLuv’s guest post at Pocket Money Polish. My boyfriend took one look at my nails and dubbed them “Elsa”, which was also fun! Hearing what he has to say about all of my manis is fun as well.

IMG_1686

The base color is another Mentality polish (that I haven’t touched yet), a pale blue matte called Pilot. I needed two-three coats of Pilot, there was some patchiness so some nails needed 3 rather than the preferable 2! I like the color, but I mostly just like the matte finish.

IMG_1607

The glitter was fun to get on, and I always forget how dense it is! I do need more snowflake stamps though, I am getting bored of the three I have :-p

Snowmen in Hats

Even though it it STILL not snowing here in Philly (apparently it snowed briefly this weekend, but I missed it!), I have a bunch of winter/snow-themed manis for this week! I can always hope that at some point this winter I will indeed get to build a snowman…

IMG_2013

This particular design was inspired by The Nail Network although I put teal trim on my hats! Partially because more colors always makes nail art better, and partially because I messed up one of the black hat lines and I was too lazy to try and fix it.

IMG_1487

Look at their dotted smiles! This was a lot of fun. Especially making wonky carrot noses 😀

Green Blizzard

Sorry for the late post, I just got back from a weekend in Boston! Unfortunately, two of my fish were dead when I got home (neither was honestly a surprise) so I had to spend even more time cleaning up the fish tank. Anyway, here is a post!

IMG_1483

I was having some camera troubles (apparently I white-balanced sometime in the last week and didn’t notice. So all the colors are off! Oops), so there are only 3 photos today. Which is ok since this mani isn’t incredibly exciting anyway :-p

IMG_1944

This is really just a teal-green pastel base with some green and white glitters over it. The glitter polish is a pain in the butt…it was super super thick and didn’t want to spread at all! Even with glomming it on and pushing the glitters around, it was still difficult to work with! Now I see why last time I used this I pulled out individual glitters and just placed them. Ugh.

Colors
~ Green: Zoya – Tiana

IMG_1946

The decals were actually a gift from Jacqui at Craftynail a while ago…maybe two years ago now? I don’t know. She made her own water decals and sent me some! And since snowflakes are terrible to freehand, I decided to use her decals. Thanks Jacqui! It does rather look like a green-themed snowstorm at least. Hope you enjoyed and happy MLK day to anyone who has it off!

Purple Winter Hat

One of my co-workers has a really pretty purple knit winter hat. A year ago, I remarked to her that I wanted to nail art her hat. She was very excited. I then promptly forgot until THIS winter that I said so! She was wearing it the other day, so here it is. Hi Amy, I finally painted your hat!

IMG_1394

It is a bit funny to me that these nails (and her hat) are purple, seeing as how she always wants to steal my green polish (and only my green polish).

IMG_1462

The hat is a knit with a few shades of purple, and grey buttons. I started with a purple base, and smushed (it’s definitely a technical term!) on other shades of purple using saran wrap. Once that was dry, I added either a stamp of a knit pattern using the darkest purple (which is why it appears so faint) or applied a stamping decal I made of buttons. Both stamps are from the 2014 create-your-own stamping set.
